Heads up

- Leap 42.2 (current stable) has a dependency circle with non-free media codecs. However I replaced the older gstreamer framework, it goes a long way and firefox works.

- Also the kernel 4.4 (Leap 42.2) has a security vulnerability which was patched last week. Update your system if you are on kernel v4.4

Also

I need help filing this bug https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=137529 on KDE. However I can't find the proper category (or in this case, package name) in their list. I believe the application menu is called kickoff which is not in their list of software provided in https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi

Any suggestions?

Hey guys when I installed Ubuntu in 2013 on my samsung notebook (RV411) the trackpad worked just fine even the scrolling gesture. I installed Debian today and it doesn't.
Can I just get a generic trackpad driver? I don't care about gestures.

Do this:
xmodmap -pp > ~/xmodmap
Execute in a terminal:
xinput --list-props <id> > ~/xinput
Please note that <id> is the number of your Touchpad found executing in a terminal:
xinput --list
An example, partial output of this notes the id is 12:
↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
After reading this for help on how to enter VT and log evtest events, switch to a VT using Crtl+Alt+F2 and enter the following in a terminal:
sudo evtest /dev/input/eventX > ~/evtest
Add identifier, Scroll, tap, drag, press buttons, and create various other possible events on the Touchpad. Then, press CTRL+C to exit.
Press Crtl+Alt+F7 to switch back to X.
After reading this on reporting xev logs, execute the following in a terminal, and perform the relevant actions:
xev > ~/xev.log

I was watching a podcast featuring one of the KDE devs. They are saying that they are going to depend more on freedesktop and systemd for a more powerful DE experience, now that they have KDE Neon to focus on.

They did claim that KDE is going to be compatible with non systemd OS/distros as well but it'll miss some features (such as systemd-logind utilization) on those system.

See
http://blog.davidedmundson.co.uk/blog/systemd-and-plasma
https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-distro-packagers/2015-July/000082.html

I'm a bit blown away by
printf "cp -v %s %02d.png\n", $0, a++

There are 4 syntaxes for printf and this one seems to take

printf (FORMAT, ARGUMENTS...)

but the format includes a command. In fact it IS a command :

mv -v %THIS_STRING %FORMAT

followed by argument $0, which is the whole expression, followed by yet another argument which is an incerement.

How do i disable permanently screen turning off after 10 min on i3wm?
>>
>>57890712
setterm writes to standard output a character string that will invoke the specified terminal capabilities. Where possible terminfo database (terminfo is a data base describing terminals, used by screen-oriented programs and libraries such as ncurses) is consulted to find the string to use.

By default, the Linux kernel will use screen-save option to disable it you need to type command (it turns off monitor VESA powersaving features):

$ setterm -powersave off -blank 0

If it dumps back you with an error that read as follows:

>cannot (un)set powersave mode
You need to shutdown X window system and rerun the above command. Better, add following two commands to your ~/.xinitrc file:

setterm -blank 0 -powersave off -powerdown 0
xset s off

A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness—not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean “security breaker.”

Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are “crackers.”

>>
>>57891129
how gahnoo r u?
>>
>>57891628
No, people actually just feel that they can do more with them, more flexible and more adaptable than using a GUI. In many cases it's also faster, but not always, and gives more options and control.

Take making webm's for example. Pretty much every GUI falls short compared to using ffmpeg itself, and on top of that we have tools like youtube-dl
You can just chain them together. Once you've figured out how to do it that's it, you can run that shit all day converting youtube videos into webm files.

Alternatively, how would that work with a GUI? Are you going to reprogram the software to allow you to click 1 button to do it all? No, you'd just be stuck doing all the steps manually every time.

Oh, I don't know what that is but I just looked it up.
From what I can tell though I think for programs like that it might just be more about personal preference. CLI just feels cleaner and is more keyboard focused than mouse focused.
But GUI's are probably just as good. You just fine more CLI tools on Linux because we tend to have more people who have that preference, as well as the fact that it's much easier to program than a GUI.

Interesting. Will try. The card in the W520 is the Nvidia Quadro 2000M
>>

Are you using an nvidia card? If so, try this:

nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"

This minimizes the screentearing for me. Keep in mind that doesn't save on boot so put it in your startup applications in Mint.

I have 12 or so hdd's, both 2.5 and 3.5 format ranging from 500g to 2 tb, all of them are internal drives so I just use them with a usb 3 dock. my main computer has 7tb of space, but with a shitload of folders and stuff scattered around.

I want to use all these random small drives as an extra cold backup, is there a way to copy everything across them all and just have a prompt popup to insert a new drive when one gets full? sort of like how you used to do it with floppy disks? I don't want to have to go into my main storage and manually divide things up to fit on each hdd.

what do you guys do with you old <1tb drives anyway?

if you want Ubuntu then get any other spin of it like kubuntu, xubuntu, ubuntu gnome etc.

id say Ubuntu MATE or Xubuntu are the most userfriendly, while both mantaining the classic GNOME look of older Ubuntu that i grew to love, MATE specially

>Can you tell me why I should stay away from mint.
He's meming, Mint is fine if you install all security updates (it will prompt you for what you want your update policy to be when you first boot it up)
>>
>>57892234

Mint is a franken-distro of Debian and Ubuntu. Debian and Ubuntu name things differently, and Mint just kind of throws these conflictingly-named packages all together. This works okay on an fresh install, because their team has taken time to fix all the problems, but it tends to get screwy after some updates.
Also they don't seem to have a proper security team at all, and security updates from Mint are spotty as a result.
>>
>>57892234
Stock Ubuntu (with Unity) = Windows Vista
Ubuntu MATE/GNOME = Win7
Xubuntu = Win7 debloated
lubuntu = Win7 with the classic theme and the requirements of XP
thats the bets analogy i can think of

Trying to pick my first Linux distro. For a while, I figured GNOME 3 was my favorite DE, but I've recently realized that Cinnamon is pretty comfy too. If I decide on Cinnamon, is Mint the only option that's newbie-friendly? There's plenty of options for GNOME, I realize (currently looking at Ubuntu GNOME because NVIDIA can't be assed to provide support for Fedora 25), but for Cinnamon, do I just have to bite the bullet and take Mint?
>>
>>57892234
it's a horribly hacked together distro which blocks packages from updating since it might break something.
there's literally no reason to use it over ubuntu.
default ubuntu comes with a DE which is an absolute piece of shit

>>
>>57892298

This is some old bullshit right here. Mint is just as command-line friendly as any other distro.

I recommend against it because the install I put on my Dad's computer got screwy after about a year and a half's worth of updates, and I'm far from the only one who's had problems with Mint's poor packaging practices.

Nah, you just have to copy USE flags from whatever desktop profile you would use otherwise and paste them to your make.conf
And check once in a while if any new USE flags have been added to the profile.

What do you even mean by "security driven"?
It can mean a lot of things from hardened compiling to using a MAC like grsecurity or selinux.
Arch provides kernels already patched with gresucirty iirc so using it there would be pretty easy, but you won't have hardened compiling.
If you just need a distro for anonymous browsing use tails. But there's no reason to use it as your primary distro.

So I've been using arch heavily on my laptop for about 1-2 years now and I've recently outgrown games so I'm thinking of making the switch (to ubunutu) but before I do I have a few questions, how compatible is my hardward and is fan speed controlled by the OS (win7, ubuntu) or is it controlled by the hardware itself? I'm quite worried about my GPU overheating and dying since at idle only one fan spins then when it starts heating up two other fans kick in, I'm worried on linux the other two fans might not kick in

(dual booting isn't an option because when I installed win7 I installed it on an ssd without unplugging mechanical drives so...plus I kinda don't wanna)

Fan speed of what? It is definitely controlled by the hardware in the sense that the logic is on the hardware itself.
You could definitely configure GPU fan speed in your gpu configuration utility.
The CPU and any other chassis fans are usually controlled through bios

ok guys, I've been using Arch for a long time now but I want to move on to a solely source-based distro. rolling release is very important to me so I've considered gentoo, thought I'm not sure whether it's just a meme. also, would you guys recommend slackware?

all I want is that the package manager automatically fetches, compiles and installs the repo's source, whenever there is a newer version available and this recursively for all dependencies. optimally, I want to be able to choose the branch, e.g. I'm interested in clang 4.0 which has not yet been released, as the SVN already has a lot of c++17 features implemented. are both of these comfortably possible under gentoo?

also errors I run into when compiling would be harder to fix than errors I run into whilst installing a .deb

First of all, only the most obscure software can' be found in the repository.
Secondly, other people sometimes create private repositories (PPAs) from which you can install it.
Thirdly, you can learn to create your own packages, it's not hard and better than doing this >>57896906.

guys i think i have become enlightened

Your pathetic humble-brag. By making it sound so trivial (which it is), you also tried to make yourself sound so smart. Only insecure and pretentious people do that.
>>
>>57897006
yes its a very low level thing it doesn't care about your os.

>>
>>57897017
So does linux provide additional protection, since it prevent writing over MBR unless you have root privilege?
Assuming no privilege escalation vulnerabilities are used?
>>
>>57897038
i think you're thinking of the boot loader here.
they aren't the same thing.
the boot loader is usually located on your /boot partition and you can't write to it without root privileges. the mbr is very small and it just holds information about your partition table and "starts" the boot loader.
>>
>>57897012

I'm researching malware that overwrite your MBR, like MEMEZ.
Doesn't this overwrite the MBR? and replace it?
>>

right so instead of helping me actually understand why what I said is wrong you're just shitposting
>>
>>57897113
you could ask a question directly if you wanted to know something and i could reply if i knew the correct answer to it
what's your question bruh?
>>
>>57897112
i don't think it actually does that. it probably overwrites the windows boot loader which certainly isn't the same as the mbr.
the mbr is literally 512 bytes at the beginning of your disk which holds all the information about the types of partitions you have on it. it doesn't have anything to do with your os.
>>
>>57897127
ok let me rephrase, as a noobie who has never compiled anything should I pick ubuntu over fedora just so I can get precompiled binaries or is compiling so easy I should just go for personal preference?
>>
>>57897152
So it overwrites the bootloader?
Make sense, since the nyacat can't be put in 512 byte.
So if I ran this under WINE should it be able to overwrite the bootloader?

they are the same in this regard. both are binary distros which means they aren't a good choice if you want to compile everything.
compiling is pretty easy, especially if you use a source based distro like gentoo for example, which does it by default when you do the equivalent of apt-get install
>>
>>57897203
i would assume so.
the boot loader on windows isn't located on /boot so no.
>>
>>57897209
stopped reading right at your second line.
post disregarded.
>>
>>57897259
Ok, So the bootloader is safe in linux.
Then let's assume somehow malware that runs under WINE manged to screw the MBR.
How do you fix it?
Does booting a live session the dd any mbr.bin to the drive should fix it?
Or each MBR is unique?
>>
>>57897286
it probably is protected so that it can't be written to from a running os.
you could check just by trying to delete it with parted.
>Does booting a live session the dd any mbr.bin to the drive should fix it?
that should do it.
there are also windows tools which repair the mbr i think.
>>
does mbr load linux or grub?

Yes, even trying to overwrite it wit dd require root privileges.

>windows tools which repair the mbr
I'm wondering if there are any tools that does this on linux.
But since the MBR is not realted to the OS then even Hiren's can fix it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd73hV0audU
Or even use this
https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/

Then what if the bootloader is screwed?

don't know about mbr but you can directly load the kernel with efi stub.
it usually loads a boot loader though (grub, lilo, etc.)

syslinux does the job i think.
