1060 or 480? Drivers closed the gap in dx12 and increased the 480s benefit in dx12/vulkan. Overall they're similar. The 1060 is 20€ more expensive in my country. I mod games so I think I could profit from more VRAM but I'm not sure I'm still on a 1gb card..

Yeah but I'm not sure the anon has read updated reviews. The only game where's a difference above 5fps in favor of the 1060 is GTA v. And I don't play that. In newer API the 1060 gets more then 10 fps disadvantages.

Why? What are the pros and cons of this card and how does it compare to other versions?

DX11

On release (July 2016), the GTX1060 was around 12% and 8% better than RX480 in 1080P and 1440P. Now (Dec 2016), the GTX1060 is 2% and 0% better than RX480 in 1080P and 1440P.

DX12

On release (July 2016), the GTX1060 was around 3% and 4% worse than RX480 in 1080P and 1440P. Now (Dec 2016), the GTX1060 is 6% and 6% worse than RX480 in 1080P and 1440P.

you read the article, yet you're still asking the question?

the clear answer is the 480

i prefer dual fans for good cooling. the 1050 ti apparently doesn't get hot at all anyway hence why the single fan is ok.

http://www.ebuyer.com/755011-powercolor-radeon-rx-470-red-devil-4gb-gddr5-dual-link-dvi-d-hdmi-3x-axrx-470-4gbd5-3dh-o

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/zotac-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-mini-4gb-gddr5-graphics-card-768-core-1303mhz-gpu-1417mhz-boost

all 3 of these seem to be the best bang for buck models with good cooling and performance out of the box.

>gtx240
>and some 1080p/60Hz gaming when i have time
Thanks but i doubt the GTX240 will be usefull for anything gaymen whatsoever.
Still kinda in between getting the 6700K and no GPU for now or 6600K / 6500 and something like a RX470/480 or 1060 6G.
>>
>>57867730
If those are your options, I'd say get the 6600k and a 480/1060
The 470 is good, especially for the price but it's a definitive step below the 480/1060
The 480 and 1060 are way too similar to recommend one without some kind of bias. If DX12 optimization becomes better on AMD than Nvidia (seems like it will, but I can't imagine why, maybe moar cores is finally relevant now) then the 480 would be better because DX12 is without a doubt better than DX11
>>
>>57867730
Or a 6700k and a 470 if you feel like you'd eventually get an i7 anyways, you'd be pretty much set until you feel like going up in resolution/Hz
The big point is don't buy a CPU that you're gonna replace anytime soon, high-end Intel CPUs just don't go bad

But I mean I went with gigabyte because it was the cheapest, if I was going for a 1070 with high end heatsink I might've looked into other brands more
But at 2GHz and 2Fans, it's never gone above 60°
>>
>>57867785
480 is the better choice.
Look at pic related in >>57865751 & >>57865783
>>
>>57867987
Yeah but there's also a lot of gpu politics going on, when the difference comes down to less than 5%, and when the 5% advantage bounces back and forth from brand to brand, the deciding factor might come down to what's on sale, or what brand-shilled game you're mostly playing
They're both great, I agree that the card with better DX12 optimization is the way to go, but really neither is a bad choice (except the 3GB 1060)
>>
>>57868035
They benched like 20 games for the average fps.
>>
>>57868035
And also the clocks and coolers of these cards could make the difference between what's "better", and that really just makes it a choice between what's on sale
>>
>>57868060
I know, and it's painstakingly equal, other than AMD games doing better on AMD cards and nvidia games doing better on nvidia cards, they're really fucking equal
The 1060/480 has been argued over since they came out, both have pathetic advantages over each other and insignificant disadvantages, it's the most competitive gpu rivalry out right now
>>
>>57867785
>>57867813
Thanks guys. The i7 would be for work/college. Since my old i7 PC gave up i'm stuck with my i5-4200U chinknovo, which absolutely sucks.
The new PC should be enough until after college & master degree (probably 3-4 years) when i get a job. My "problem" is that my inner jew tells me to buy a <900€ PC.
Do you guys think a 6500 will be enough to run a VM and/or Jetbrains IDEs for light/medium work for 4 years? If so, i'll probably stick with a 6500 + RX480 4G for the next 4 years.
That combo usually goes for 400-420€ here in Germany.
>>
>>57868060
And any random sale makes the entire statistic completely inaccurate and useless, nobody needs to spend $270 on a 480

I can't say for sure, the 250D is pretty big as far as ITX cases go honestly, and the gpu panel looks like it has fine airflow, a multi-fan card would definitely be better for your gpu but might dump a little heat into the case. You're getting a watercooler though, right? As long as you're not using hot-ass M2 SSDs and have good fans you should be fine with a normal multi-fan card
>>
>>57868202

It is prebuilt shit. All around it's 792 dollars or so. Beggars can't be choosers tho', it's the only shop where I can buy something, so I wanted to check if it was worth it.
>>
>>57868280
>>57867706
I'd say if you have a cool-running CPU like a newer skylake or a locked CPU you're fine with the normal multi-fan GPU, but if you're getting worried about CPU/motherboard temps at all then you should get a blower. But I assume if your watercooler is good and you're not using an X99 motherboard or something with M2s on the back it won't matter
>>
>>57868397
$800 can get you a LOT more than that prebuilt
>>
>>57867706
Just for reference, I have a 6600K overclocked at 4.2GHz with a basic $20 hyper 212 cooler, rarely see it above 50°
My 1070 overclocked to 2GHz on the other hand, even with two fans, regularly gets up near 60°
Neither is very hot, but the GPU is definitely hotter than my CPU, even with a weak CPU cooler, so I'd rather have better GPU cooling

Z-SSD WHEN?
>>
>>57868557
>but it would only be for general OS use and occasional media production.
No difference in day-to-day use. The only real benefit is in large sequential writes, but even that's marginal because there is a throughput bottleneck on the SATA controller on the chipset.
You'll need a hardware RAID to bypass that limitation and those cost in the $500 range.
>>
>>57868557
Depending on the memory controller chip in the SSD, they usually scale really well and you can often reap all the benefits of raid with SSDs, unlike HDDs
Whether or not it's worth it is up to you, in my opinion good SSDs are already fucking fast
>>
>>57868605
2-drive raid can easily be handled by Z170/H170 even at max SATA throughput, and the benefits scale in a lot more ways than just sequential (although I think it's random read/write that doesn't get as much of a boost, still benefits though)
Just hope a drive doesn't fail

I've got an h100i v2 in there currently, had to drill holes in case over the weekend to fit the radiator.

Replaced the msi 1070 with a Strix 1070 for the extra vertical clearance.

Hoping the cables won't get in the way of the intake air that needs to travel to those fans for exhaust. Also had to remove the Strix shroud to fit that in. The guy at the store told me it would fit.
>>
>>57868718
Two striped 850 EVOs will only reach about 800MB/s peak writes and 1000MB/s peak reads. The controller inside the SSD is part of the issue, but the SATA controller inside Intel's chipsets still aren't suited for RAIDing SSDs.

>>
>>57868861
You can get past the 1000MB/s limit for both reads and writes on a proper hardware RAID card.
>>
>>57868871
You can do that with H170 and good enough SSDs, the chipset is not the problem when it comes to two SATA drives, even saturated SATA

Either way, it's literally dragging a slider around and playing games until it stops being buggy so I don't see why you wouldn't

Hello, I am a rookie to building a new desktop and I was suggested to come here for more advice/suggestions on this build from another thread I made earlier. Questions i have. I don't believe I need a water cooling system. Do I have proper fans though and is the case appropriate or more for a water cooling system? I don't believe I will be OC'ing, although I would like to play some of the latest games with atleast mid range resolution, am I doing alright? Please let me know what you think of this build so far, I would like to avoid making rookie mistakes. My Budget is 1500 , including the monitor and all. thnx.

You think a 212 EVO cooler would do the trick?
>>
>>57872191
nope, actually you're very fine for gaming. if you plan to do lots of photo video editing or rendering, you might want to go for the i7 6700K for the hyperthreading. but if you plan it for gaming only, the cpu is just fine.

The motherboard is ok too, you can OC, if you do not plan to add a 2nd graphics card later. otherwise you'd like to go with a Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI or any other that allows nvidia SLI.

RAM is also fine, just be sure to install it in the dual channel setup.

I am just planing that build right now:
MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Intel Core i7 6700K BOX
Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
HyperX Fury (2x, 8GB, DDR4-2133, DIMM 288)
Corsair VS650 (650W)
Corsair Carbide 200R

Only thing I have not ordered yet is the graphics card, I don't know which gtx 1070 to buy :/

as far as I could find out, the
o) the clock speed: some cards are factory OC
o) the fans: some cards have two or three fans blowing hot air into the pc case, others have one fan, blowing the air out of the computer via slot bracket
the 1 fan cards doing so are recommended for OEM PC (if you you buy a prebuilt non-gamer pc) and plan to exchange a graphics card. for any other pc that has a reasonable air flow in the case 2/3 fans versions are fine
o) there is a so-called reference board, that is kind of the circuit board that the graphics chip manufacturer has in mind, and the then other producers have their own idea how it looks like.

i guess most important is, the chip is the same in any case, I guess their pretty the same.

>>57873178
Something like the 1080 is actually very good for OpenGL graphical design, and insanely good price/performance compared to other cards. Hell, even a Titan XP is just as good for cad (minus the tons of ECC VRAM) as the highest-end Quadro right now
>>
>>57873387
A Titan woudl draw the line between cad and consumer purposes. Dual gpu setups aren't worth. Lookup what kind of Quadro you'd get for the money. Do you need that much VRAM? Do you need more data bandwidth? Maybe a much lower specced Quadro with optimised drivers for your purposes is the better bang for your bucks.
>>
>>57873663

>>
>>57873751

>>
>>57873726
That might be true I didn't look up 1080 reviews for these purposes. You're totally right about the second part. With Titans Nvidia tries to get both things into one card. The 6k Quadro just has the massive amount of VRAM going for it. It gets the same render times as a Titan for small projects.

Thinking of getting a 1050 TI because my chink power supply only has molex cables (no 6/8 pins) and apparently using a molex-to-6pin is dangerous or unstable.

Would this be enough to run rising storm 2 really well when it comes out? Or should I just risk it with the molex to 6pin and get something better?

I don't feel like spending 800+ on the 4K meme, and I already had the 1080p Monitor on the far right so I just got two more for less than 250 total. I am fine with 1080p at 60, I really don't care for much higher until the price drops.

I got the EVO for sub 600 on Cyber monday. The 2TB version has the same GB/Dollar ratio as the 1TB version so I decided to have a little future proofing.

I have saved up for the upgrades I got for quite a while. I have not the money to get anything else atm.

24 pin (bottom right)
4+4/8 pin for CPU (top right)
SATA power cables
PCI-E power cables (at least an 8/6+2 pin and a 6 pin)

ATX standard isn't just about motherboard size but also about making sure power supplies that fit into these cases also actually work with the boards in them.

When the GPU is not in my pc, pc runs perfectly well, the second I plug it in and do a clean install of drivers, it starts crashing randomly.
Is it because my PSU is the bare minimum, or because my GPU is defective?

My motherboard is losing power as of late. It's odd because the system will crash, i'll get a black screen, but everything seems to be on (except for the motherboard). It appears that the issue is the PSU connection, two of the 8 prongs look like they burned out or something (it's just the connections not the plastic covers). If I 'wiggle' the connection around the motherboard seems to get power again and my PC will run for a random amount of time before crashing again.

You think this is just a connection issue (therefore fixed by just getting a new PSU) or do you think my motherboard is frying out?

I would say we'll know something mid-December during AMD's conference about their CPU/GPU release dates and use that to judge how long and whether to wait or not.

If it's going to be like late February or March then I'd not wait and target a buy around the weeks of Christmas/New Years since that's when sales will probably be best. If, as has been rumored they are going to launch during CES which is Jan. 3-8 then you may hold off to see pricing reacts.

>>
With zen around the corner would it be dumb to upgrade my cpu cooler now? I want something that can get my 4690k to at least 4.5ghz but if zen is good i might upgrade and thus i'm worried about compatibility.
>>
>>57880313
Literally no point in upgrading your CPU atm. Just slap a 1070/1080 into your rig and you're golden - Or if you're an autistic /g/ neckbeard wait for 490. 480RX would be barely an improvement over heavily oced 970.
>>
>>57880461
You have a 4690k. A fucking 4690k. Unless you actually need god knows how many cores for let's video rendering there is no need to upgrade. If you do - Remember that jumping to ZEN will cost you more than just the cpu itself, it's also a new mobo and probably ddr4 (could be wrong on that one, maybe they go for DDR3/4 support like Skylake did).
>>
>>57880244
That's a great find and would destroy the 7470. I found an old GTX 460 SE which would beat it, but it uses PCI-E power cables.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GeForce-GTX-460-SE-/332048673001?hash=item4d4fa4a8e9:g:U9UAAOSw5cNYPnn5

Same story for an HD7770 which requires a single 6-pin PCI-E connector:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-Radeon-HD-7770-1GB-128Bit-GDDR5-PCI-Express-Video-Card-GV-R777OC-1GD-/162310988562?hash=item25ca7d2312:g:AXkAAOSw4GVYRwnK

That 4850 might be your best bet if you don't have a PSU capable of powering a discrete GPU. The 4850 is DX10 only while the 7470 is DX11 compliant (newer but weaker class gpu), but it's dubious whether it has enough horsepower to make a difference in semi-modern DX11 titles. Food for thought.
>>
>>57880520
Hmm... ok thank you.
But i figured there is one problem... these ebay sellers are not shipping to my country, so i guess I will go with that 4850... but is it really that good in comparison to my current one?
My current one has like 550 MHz GPU Clock, and 4850 has 625 MHz... it doesnt look like so big step, but I dont understand all the details, so I may be wrong.
>>
>>57880484
So you're saying an overclocked 970 is the same as a 1060?
>>
>>57880606
Unless you're comparing the exact same chip, the clockrate is the LAST thing you should be looking at. Obviously it matters, but if GPU A is clocked at 500MHz and GPU B is clocked at 1000MHz, that does not mean A will perform worse than B if the two have different number of cores and different architecture.

I say that AMD shills on /g/ are vast in numbers and all their sources are always some biased Pajeets talking in broken English about benchmarks to irrelevant or just straight out bad games like Hitman or AoTS just because their favor AMD while using a $900 cpu to hide driver overhead. And yes a 1500Mhz core oced 970 GTX has the performance of a stock 980/480RX/1060 gtx. Thing is many people in here bought blower-style cheapest reference 480RX which can't oc for shit so comparing a stock 480RX to a non-reference 970 GTX is more than fair.
>>
So I've fell for the AMD meme for years now, first time upgrading to intel, I currently have an FX 8350, was considering an I7 but I mostly use my PC for gaming and drawing, I don't render on 3d and shit like that and I was wondering if that's overkill.

>My current one has like 550 MHz GPU Clock, and 4850 has 625 MHz... it doesnt look like so big step, but I dont understand all the details, so I may be wrong.
Oh dear sweet child you are comparing 2 cards that aren't even in the same class. The 4850 was AMD's 2nd best card in 2008 and the 9500 GT was Nvidia's budget-tier.
http://www.legitreviews.com/nvidia-geforce-9500-gt-video-card-preview_760

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=24&cmp%5B%5D=1431

The 630 is a much much newer, more efficient GPU but it's such a cut-down card from Nvidia's product stack that the older HD4850 overpowers it by bruteforce.
The 4850 will always be at least double if not triple the performance of the 9500 GT

Beginner here.
I've been upgrading my PC lately (which was pre-built, back in 2012), and just installed a new hard drive but noticed it got a bit warm after a few hours of having my computer on. I can see that there's a fan compartment behind it, but it looks a bit weird; there are already screws installed and they're protected by these metal things. Do they hold the front of the case to the body or something?

How important is it to have a fan cooling an HDD anyway? Should I even be worrying about this?
