i just hate when people ask for software recommendations in the form of "i'm switching away from _____, what other thing should i use?"

like if we don't know why you're looking to switch away, how can we possibly give you suggestions on what to try next? software isn't a fashion accessory. are you looking for something faster? are you looking for something with better hardware compatibility? do you want a different default DE?

I started in ubuntu like 2007 and like debian now but after I hiatus it seems systemd is up everything's ass

You like Debian and want something without systemd? Sounds like Devuan is something for you.

Even Ubuntu is too confusing with it's multi versions and hideous unity, plus shit like "apt-get remove (insert program)" and then it wants to uninstall your entire core system too.

ElementaryOS should be shilled to these people so they never actually touch Synaptic package manager or aptitude https://elementary.io and it's based on LTS, so will be around for a while.

Failing that Korora which is Fedora retard proofed https://kororaproject.org/ and will just work as well

If its your first time, you use Ubuntu or Ubuntu: Mate. After you get used to it and how Linux works, move on to something else.

Proprietary software is associated with malicious treatment of the user: surveillance code, digital handcuffs (DRM or Digital Restrictions Management) to restrict users, and back doors that can do nasty things under remote control. Programs that do any of these things are malware and should be treated as such. Widely used examples include Windows, the iThings, and the Amazon “Kindle” product for virtual book burning, which do all three; Macintosh and the Playstation III which impose DRM; most portable phones, which do spying and have back doors; Adobe Flash Player, which does spying and enforces DRM; and plenty of apps for iThings and Android, which are guilty of one or more of these nasty practices.

Free software gives users a chance to protect themselves from malicious software behaviors. Even better, usually the community protects everyone, and most users don't have to move a muscle. Here's how.

Once in a while, users who know programming find that a free program has malicious code. Generally the next thing they do is release a corrected version of the program; with the four freedoms that define free software (see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html), they are free to do this. This is called a “fork” of the program. Soon the community switches to the corrected fork, and the malicious version is rejected. The prospect of ignominious rejection is not very tempting; thus, most of the time, even those who are not stopped by their consciences and social pressure refrain from putting malfeatures in free software.

But not always. Ubuntu, a widely used and influential GNU/Linux distribution, has installed surveillance code. When the user searches her own local files for a string using the Ubuntu desktop, Ubuntu sends that string to one of Canonical's servers. (Canonical is the company that develops Ubuntu.)

Isn't that just Unity, though? The other flavors of Ubuntu are fine, aren't they?

I used to like Ubuntu for the hassle-free factor, but then I realised that Debian is pretty similar and works just as well out of the box. Also you can use Debian testing to get a rolling distro, so you're not setting yourself up for future hassle when you decide you want to upgrade to the latest release.

I use Manjaro and I've found it to be great but I have a hard time trying to get past the no rpm or deb support. This makes the process of installing printer drivers impossible.

Is there a way to add support for deb or rpm in Manjaro?

rpmunpack or rpmextract.

I'm all for Debian myself, not sure what version though, probably Stable.

Why? It's generally accepted that beginners should avoid anything not based on Debian, so that pretty much narrows you down to Mint, Debian, or Ubuntu.

Ubuntu - Canonical cannot be trusted, aside from that fact that they're pulling an Apple (trying to merge the phone, computer, and everything else into one OS), which always is a sign of bad things, they can't be trusted on privacy, which has already been discussed in this thread.
Mint - Ignoring their recent security issues, "FrankenDebian" is a problem of quite some relevance, a silly amount of issues have been caused by the fact that the developers of Mint have been careless about the fact that they're piling Mint on top of Ubuntu which is already working off Debian. Speaking of those developers, I can easily accuse them of being unprofessional, they even dodge the law when it comes to copyright shit.

So, by process of elimination, you've got Debian, with Stable being the obvious beginners choice.

Thoughts, /g/?

It's a matter of principle, the very fact that they even did it means that they can't be trusted.
>>
>>57866570
>Debian, with Stable being the obvious beginners choice.
Not necessarily a good choice. Stable has really ancient packages and kernels. We're talking 2014 old. If you have newer hardware (Skylake for example) it will be an utter pain in the fucking ass to get anything working.

Go with testing if you absolutely need Debian. It is soon frozen anyway (which means no more new package versions).

Testing has a few problems, in some cases it can be less secure than unstable.
>>

By all means, enjoy your dirty cow exploit. Because stable's kernel (3.1x) is highly vulnerable.

Seriously though, not sure if your trolling, but dirty cow was patched shortly after being discovered. Also I'm fairly certian it was in the newer kernels as well until it was patched.

What DE supports HiDPI best? My laptop has a 13" screen with a resolution of 3200x1800. It's borderline unusable without scaling.
Research seems to say KDE is the least bad, but do any of you have some experience?
