Speaking of oneness with cup rubber, the topre 87U with PBT spacebars is on massdrop right now for $200. I'm tempted to get the uniform 55g version if only to use it to eventually harvest the switches and put it into this thing.

Unless there's a chink torpe clone that's 55g or something.

Looks like the perfect keyboard, except Topre.

Might just end up making a dactyl soon. Have no fucking clue how to program it though.
>>
>>57845279
Well it has the same number of keys as the ergodox, so you could just slap a teensy in the case and program it the same way you would an ergodox.
>>
>>57845510

Dactyl is missing a collum I think.

Plus the latest version uses two micro pris instead of a teensy.

Could you go into just a little detail as to why?

I know two friends with K70's. One is a moderately serious gamer, and the other one is very, very high level, competes in leagues, has sponsors, etc. They both love it.

Brown switches are really popular right now.

Meme'ing aside.. what gives?
>>

Memes.

It's cool to hate on browns.
Enthusiasts don't like Corsair boards because non-standard bottom row so replacing keycaps is a more expensive and difficult process that is unsuited to new people.

Browns become quite unpleasant to type on due to lack of response.
Clears are light years better if you're looking for that kind of switch.

>objective opinion

Browns are a good medium for typing and gaming. Period.

Blue's are the best for typing, but are loud.

Red's are objectively best for gaming, but don't have tactile feedback, which can cause mistypes.

Clears are awesome for typing, but require a little more force than most switches.

Just go with what you like to desu.

Why is ASD row padded 0.25 compared to QWE row when every other row is 0.5?
>>
>>57846553
Because staggering is a relic from the days when typewriters needed to provide clearance for the arms to pop up and hit the paper.
>>
>>57846553
There are keyboards with uniform staggering, like I believe the Filco Minila has 1.25u tab, 1.5u caps lock and 1.75u left shift so each row has a .25u offset from the one above it
>>
>>57846959
I was wrong, it's 1.5u tab, 1.75u caps lock and 2u left shift. All the alpha rows have .25u difference but the numeric row is still .5u off from qwer

I guess I'm not used to the travel distance. Rubber domes were maybe stiffer, but required much less t bottom out/actuate. Will o-rings help (already ordered some to try out)?
>>
>>57848427
>My reds are already kinda stiff

You're pressing them too far. They actuate long before they bottom out and the spring force goes up as it compresses.

Compare with a rubber dome, which has a stiffer force before it collapses, but then falls right to the bottom with next to zero resistance.

Tactile switches will allow you to know when you've reached the actuation point and can let go of the key.

Not really, though I haven't experimented a whole lot yet.

It works fine for everything but the stem. In my three attempts so far, I haven't managed to make a stem that fit properly and was also tight.
>>
is there a reason some of these keyboards or so loud when typing? What causes that?

You literally cannot press a key fast enough for 1000hz polling to matter.
>>
>>57850158
A friend of mine is also having issues. The tolerance is still a huge problem. I see some people do it on youtube, though.

>>
>>57850181
I think it's be easier to print a mold, possibly using a keycap for the part of the mold that includes the stem. You cast shit like that and still make nice molds quite easily.

Not sure what you mean with seperating the engine from the needle
>>
>>57850206
>Not sure what you mean with seperating the engine from the needle

On cheaper printers the part through which the plastic is fed is mounted right on the beak that "prints". This adds weight and noise due to the engine and the fan. You can just adapt it to receive the plastic feed through a hose, the engine would be mounted someplace else.
>>
>>57850228
Ah, I see what you mean.

My printer dies indeed have a fan mounted there, but the feeding mechanism is separated from the extruder.
>>
>>57850244
>>57850206
I'd be willing to try using a mold, but from my little research I've read that you may need a vacuum chamber... It's getting too expensive for me.
>>
>>57850283
A vacuum chamber? From what I could tell looking at guides on geekwhack, you can buy all the stuff you need for making molds for less than 30 bucks.
>>
>>57850325

KBP has an all black keyboard if that's the style you want
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1781

Now the ducky keyboard has a steel plate to hold the switches together, nkro, and some programmable macros and layers. If you don't really care about all that then get the Kaihua, or if you want those features then get a g15 and pre-order the keyboard you want because they sell out pretty fast. I got my Ducky when there were just two left, and that was the week after they arrived.

By default the fox is the fn key, which is kind of stupid. But the configuration tool is excellent and really simple to work with. I remapped star to be fn, then I bound a reflash command to the fn - 1 layer.

Honestly the web configuration tool is the best I've used for any keyboard. It's easier than on-board programming, but it flashes straight to the chip, so no software is needed on your machine to run your key bindings.

I wouldn't really ever suggest browns unless you were in an area where you really needed to drop the noise level a bit, and even then browns aren't exactly quiet.

I have the same keyboard in browns and blues and typing on blues is an infinitly better experience. The sound makes it a lot easier to not bottom out keys, and the click is far more obvious on blues. On browns the tactile bump is basically unnoticeable on blues you can very much feel it.

Also the entire browns for gaming meme is reddit shit - I've not had a single issue in my 2-3 years of using blue switches in gaming, even games where I needed to double tap.

I wouldn't call it "super hard", but it depends.
If you or someone else has access to proper woodworking tools(check out some local makerspaces for that) then it becomes a whole lot easier.
If you have to do everything by hand it'll be harder(not "super hard" but a challenge for sure) and take a lot(a lot) longer. Your call obviously but imo it's very much worth the experience.

If you ever end up getting a topre board, I strongly recommend the hhkb.

I have not used realforce boards myself, but if you search around online you will find that one of the main points of contention between the two boards, besides layout, is the mounting of the switches. The hhkb has case mounted switches, which significantly alter the sound created while typing, and to some the feel of the keyboard as well.

Again, while I have not used a realforce, one of the pleasures of the hhkb is the sound generated from typing. It sounds trivial, but I really think it is part of the board's appeal.

I also am a huge fan of the layout. To me, it is a perfect middlepoint between the functionality of a tkl and the benefits of other, more strange layouts such as the planck and other sub 60%'s.
>>
>>57852575

To be fair, the one thing it does function-wise that my numpad doesn't is have the macros held on-board. Currently I use a couple programs to have the numpad do what's needed in Photoshop, but having to install and configure those on multiple computers is a pain.
>>
>>57852772
>if you can think of a way to build it in 20 seconds

Wood is maleable (to a certain point) and easily attainable. Even if you don't know how to work it, google it.
>>
>>57852470
Now I understand why people call applel computers fashion accessories. You can bang that thing around and it'll be just fine because of muh aluminum case, but it'll break from normal use because it doesn't even have a mounting plate.
>>
>>57852827

Truth be told, browns are pretty unpopular around here, and the reasons for that are good ones. For many they provide a dull and unremarkable typing experience, and to many users they offer much less when compared to other switches.

That being said, cherry browns are also some of the more popular switches. They are not challenging, they provide a tactility which many new mechanical keyboard users find lacking in their former rubber domes, and they are quiet enough to be used in communal or office settings.

All in all, you did fine. However, depending on your engagement with keyboards in general, you may get bored with them and want to try something new.

I didn't know this thread existed until today.

Im currently half working on a project to build a fully custom keyboard (almost) from the ground up (almost because Im not like, pressing microchips myself or anything crazy).

Im currently working on learning V-USB and programming an ATTiny85 to be recognized as a USB HID Keyboard. And the PCB design.

I'm going to use shift registers and hardware de-bouncing because I want to. Unless theres some huge drawback other than component cost (which I wont consider an issue because I'm not going to scale-up production).

Do you guys know of any pitfalls I may not be seeing in general or have ideas for features that could be included with this level of customization?

One thing I was thinking of doing is per-key addressable dimmable LEDs which might enable a cool 'water-drop' ripple effect.

We all know Massdrop is a great source for unbiased information. Take this reasoning behind a lack of a stabilizer on the one big key in the OP keypad:

Hey mate, you're correct :) The 2U isn't stabilised, and funnily enough - I actually prefer it that way. With the configuration/layout of the keys, it makes it easier to actuate when struck on either side which works well from an ergonomics standpoint! Also, when the 2U key is removed, the RESET button is revealed beside it - which you can hit to reprogram the device.

Thanks,

RAMA

it would have looked better if they used custom cherry MX switches like on those old OEM keyboards that had navy and orange cherry's

That whole product is a mess

So basically he just didn't want to drill a hole on the bottom and place the reset switch on the other side of the PCB?

To be fair I've never felt the need to install stabs on the 2u keys of my ergodox.

those sliders are endgame worthy
but PBT Topre keycaps are pretty much good enough for me until there is a HHKB with those sliders
I would like to see a RF RGB in a case like pic related
>>
>>57860302
I like the RF RGB case as it is. It really is the end game keyboard in my book.

I only got two complaints.
The software wont detect the keyboard unless it's connected in a USB 3.0 not 2.0 slot for some reason.

The keyboard resets itself on startup. It's easy to set the actuation distance you want but you got to do it every time. Unless I'm dumb and am missing some kind of preset I can set up.
>>
>>57860442
>The keyboard resets itself on startup
I hope that its not a glitch, you most likely have to flash it in order to keep it permanent rather then storing it in the ram
>>
>>57860480
By reset I mean the profile that you selected resets. Like for example if I have the profile selected with just the backlight on, once I restart it will reset to stock and I have to select that profile again.
>>
>>57860442
The Korean Custom esque look is kind of neat but the text on the case itself is tacky.
It would look even worse if the keycaps were replaced as the fonts might clash.

Are there Gateron keyboards or can I only buy the switches and put them on whatever keyboard I got? Bored of my Cherry blues on a $60 rosewill keyboard (which is pretty good if anyone is looking at one.)

>Budget
$60~
>Location (continent at least)
USA
>Preferred switch type
Curious about trying linear since winter break is up and I'll have more time to game. Looking at Gateron clears and browns but I'm open to suggestions like khail switches.

I would like to sell my current keyboard after I get a new one but I'm worried that linear would be unrealistic to use for heavier typing, even though I mostly work on my T430 now.
>Layout
ANSI

Full sized. I don't care if there are macro keys on it or not.
>Backlight

That $60 rose will keyboard in Cherry MX blues

Also, if one uses a PS/2 connection that would be great since I made sure my current build supported it, but USB is fine too.
>>
>>57860734
I don't think there are any full size keyboards with gateron clears. Right now there is that Bluetooth varmilo tkl that has clears on massdrop, but its double your budget and ends in 4 hours

I tried Topre. They are nice and smooth. As nice as they are though, they feel like they are missing something.

I need my clickiness. Just feels right. I grew up on buckling springs. Green comes close enough for me.

Can't wait to get my XDA Milestone for this board.

My god damn K95 RGB has really bad key repeating issues, happens often and to quite a few keys, but not all of them. It started happening slowly over time after i turned the keyboard over to look at the bottom. Otherwise ive done nothing else.

Any ideas? Can't afford express RMA/a new keyboard and I haven't got a spare keyboard.

there's a bit of flex when you apply pressure to it in the middle, but you shouldn't be doing that when you're typing anyway

>>
>>57863311
No, it's shit.
Doesn't take knowing Russian to notice how O (J) and A (F) are aligned differently because of tactile bumps.
Or how Ц and Щ are higher than other letters. Not to mention the abomination that is Д. Those should be the same height except for descenders going below the baseline (like latin lowercase q and p).
Ъ and Й have no business having their diacritics like that.
У and Ч have very weird proportions, this is not how those letters supposed to look. No one curves К or Я like that.

This is just a terrible typeface and extremely lame execution. how the hell did it become this common?

Well, for on thing it has to be a bit bigger overall. Secondly there'll have to be a strap so you can strap it to your hand.

The idea is definitely stupis when compared to other methods of input we have nowadays, but that's not what having fun is about
