The Silverstone Frotress case is the best case ever made. I've been reusing the same one I had for almost 8 years now, its unbeatable, and each revision has only improved on it.

Going to keep using it until I can't use it anymore, which by the looks of it isn't going to be any time soon.

Opinions on this case? Making either an mITX or mATX PC for my brother. He will be going to college in a year so I want something with portability. When I went to college I brought my massive full tower case with me and it was a headache. On a bit of a budget so no water cooling, which means it needs to have good air cooling capability.

I liked mine a lot, but it took up too much space. I did a new build and put it in an Enthoo mITX. Went from 2 380x's to a single 1070 and a 2600k to a 6700k.
>>
>>57798350

I built my friend a system using this case a couple weeks back. It is a little larger than you think.

I was actually able to fit a Hyper212+ in it with about 1 to 3 mm of clearance. However, I modified it in a really pathetic and shitty way to create my distance between the GPU and the HSF. I angled the fins down slightly on the GPU side of the case which solved the problem.

System has the following:

i3-2120
1050 ti
Hyper212+
8gb ddr3
256gb SSD
200mm front fan
2x120mm top
1x120mm rear

Does most 1080p shit at high. Not bad for $250

>power button halfway down the case

If you have to press that more than once a month at maximum, you are not allowed to post on /g/.

>ports cause anything plugged it to stick out of the front

Better than having the ports on the top for all the dust to accumulate in them. And if the ports are on front, you can put the case in an enclosed cabinet, only the front and back needs access.

Besides if you are serious about connectivity then you use a jack extender for audio and an usb hub, both connected to the better quality motherboard ports.

If you want to criticize the P183 at least bring up some more realistic problems, like the lack of support for 14cm fans, or the fact that it barely has enough space for radiators. The top of the case should've had two proper 12cm fan slots, at minimum.

and even with those problems, it beats the tar out of every other case on the market, as long as watercooling is not an absolute must for you.

You can either conveniently place a dual 120 radiator of literally every preferable thickness if you remove the top drive tray... or you can just put an NH-D15 inside conveniently, and fresh air comes in from the front, directly on the CPU heatsink, directly out the back of the case, done. There's no circulation, there's a straight wind channel. Beats every fucking conventional layout.

So cooling-wise, this case is top notch (as well).

>If you have a problem cooling your stuff, your cooling is shit,

I don't have a problem exactly. I have a custom heatsink on the gpu with a 12cm noctua fan. It's on manual control and is dead silent, but it needs to be turned on when the card is under heavy load to keep the temps under 70C.

That's why I'm asking if there's a way to make the fans turn on depending on GPU temps.
>>
>>57797310

it's gaudy. I gave mine away because it was so fucking ugly and big. It was remarkably badly made considering its price, it's the same shit chinese tin metal with very rough edges and bad fit. The plastics too were W O E F U L. A true nod back to the 90s when these shitty cheap cases started flooding the market.

I ended up getting a Fractal R4 instead because I knew it's high quality, my old Define XL was build like a tank. It literally weighed a ton and though its sound isolation was not that great it felt premium.

The burnt out controller there is because Fractal Design uses cheap piece of shit components, it's just a bunch of resistors hooked up to a switch. It overheats or shorts ridiculously easy and once it does it melts itself

The controller I'm using is a Zalman MFC1 I'm using has six heatsinked 7805 voltage controllers (one for each channel). It is extremely unlikely to burn out. Besides I had it for 2 years without problems, the Fractal one melted in 3 uses.

For reference, the board has 6 PCIe connections. So, if they're all vertical, that's 6+8. That's where I got the 14 from. Otherwise, I need 2 columns of PCIe slots.

Fractal Design Define R5 confirmed for god tier, love this case. There's a windowed panel version if you're a fucken ricer.
>>
My Define R5 is a bit bulky, so I'm thinking of switching to a mATX case. The new Define Mini C looks pretty nice and small, but it doesn't have a 5.25" bay.

What do you guys think of cases without optical drive bays?
>>
>>57813572
I have an Arc Midi R2 with a DVD drive that i occassionally use in the top bay and my mechanical HDD in the bottom bay, which allowed me to remove all of the drive cages to get space for my GPU and better airflow (2 SSDs mounted behind motherboard).

I'd buy a case with drive bays again, I know too many older people who still use optical media.
>>
>>57813572
Why not just get an external optical drive that you plug in via USB? Do you use optical media enough to justify having an optical drive in it all times?

very good case minus the window which scratches easily and is a dust magnet

The removable dust filters are nice and there is plenty of space for drives and components

Hotswap bay is also very nice

I do regret not getting CaseLabs. They're stupidly expensive however but ATX is not going anywhere so I would have gotten over it.

I'll put a full loop in my 650D once I upgrade my components

>Do you use optical media enough to justify having an optical drive in it all times?
The last time I used it was like a year ago, so I am actually considering getting an external optical drive. Having an external drive connected to your case doesn't seem so minimal though, even if it's only a couple of times a year. Not to mention I have to buy another optical drive.
>>
>>57813861
Just stick it in a drawer until you need it then.
>>
Fractal doesn't make cases with external drive bays, do they?

I guess so. It's kinda like a numpad where you don't normally use it, but you're never sure when you'll need it.

Literally grasping at straws, its just a bad wiring and a silly mistake an anon can make on his first build, just take it like a man. Its ok.
>You realise on that board that sata_0 is clearly blocked by the graphics card?
Im sure as hell that isn't the very next port apart from 0,1 and neither the closest port to the hole from wich the cable is coming. Like a said, look like a rookie mistake

Looking at the mobo layout it seems like it's in 3_5 which is odd. But 3_5 also looks like the only one where an L-shape (if it's all you have handy) will fit without interfering with headers or the previously mentioned graphics card.

It might trigger your cable management autism but whatever. It obviously works.
