IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

i just ripped apart my latitude c600. i got the screen off but there was only one port that connected with a ribbon. is that all there is supposed to be or did i destroy it?
>>
These threads are useless. Hoarded by normies who ask dumb questions about 420 over and over again and no productive discussion whatsoever. Any decent interesting questions are ignored and nnoe actually knows shit. This message bulletin is even worse than consumer tech review webpage comments. Guh.
Sage in all fields.
>>
>>57783672
This, T420 is one of the worst Thinkpads IMHO. The bulk and shitty screen combined with the lack of 4:3 or 3:2 ratio make it terrible for day to day use.
>>
>>57783705
The only good thing in SandyBridge Thinkpads is longer Esc and Del keys. I don't know why didn't htey come up with this 10 years earlier.
Anything else is worse. Fucking keyboard bezels on x220, palmrest wobbling, shitty 16:9 screens, shitty power and volume buttons, Ethernet port on the right, single audio jack like who the fuck uses separate microphone in 2011, huh? Courage motherfucker.
>>
>>57783757
The shitty screens is what ticks me off the most, my old T60p has a 1600x1200 IPS panel yet the far more "modern" T420 lacks any screen nearly as high resolution as this.
>inb4 *muh 1600x900*
16:9 is terrible and needs to be dropped.
>>
>>57783757
What about the x201, is it better built? Would you prefer one over an x220?
>>
>>57783864
I've got an x201, the screen is better due to the 16:10 ratio which makes it better for web browsing/productivity. I prefer mine due to the lack of a touchpad as I enjoy using the Trackpoint, The biggest con of the x201 is that the 1st gen i series processors run fairly hot and the fan is loud during intensive tasks.
>>
>>57783864
I would prefer X200s.
More freedom.
Less heat.
Lower body is aesthetically pleasing.
Weighs less.

X60 and T60 were the peak of Thinkpad aesthetics industrial design, X300/301 and X200(s) - peak of functional design.
Everything after that is chink garbage.
>>
>>57783620
copy from the old thread

guys, i have a problem with my new x230, whenever i put the laptop to sleep and wake it up the thinklight icon won't go away unless i turn it on-off, i'm under windows 7 and tried everything on the forums, even if the problem looks to appear more often on windows 10, reinstalled the video driver, reinstalled the osd driver, everything, someone can give me an advice?
>>
>>57784041
Reinstall thinkpad pop-ups driver
Reinstall Windows
What else do you want to hear?
>>
>>57784066
i did reinstall the osd drivers and no, i won't reinstall windows, this is a fresh instal and this is clearly a bug, you are telling me nothing

i was asking if there's anyone on this board based on thinkpads that had encountered this problem and solved it
>>
Just to confirm, I flashed my X220T with the custom BIOS. That means I can use any WiFi card, correct? My WiFi card got fucked and I need to replace it.
>>
What are the cheapest compatible 8gb ram sticks for the x220? I'm getting one in the mail and I already have an SSD. Gonna rice this bitch up just gotta order some ram.
>>
>>57783899
But the x201 comes with a touchpad. Did you swap in a x200 palmrest on yours?
>>
>>57783901
So if you had a near-mint condition x201, would you sell it off and get an x200 in its place?
>>
>>57784156
ive been searching myself and it seems everything is almost always equally priced.
>>
>>57783901
>More freedom.
Are you referring to the fact that the x200 can be librebooted (which apparently gets rid of the ME/AMT cancer) while the x201 still cannot?
>>
>>57784181
Looks like it will end up costing me over 120aud before postage
>>
>>57784168
Sure, I can get 2 of them.
>>
>>57784218
What would you think a "freedom" could mean in a discussion on a software-related bbs?
>>
>>57783757
Oh, I forgot. Fucking huge ugly hinges on 12 inch model, for no fucking reason. Also they are made from some cheap metal with chrome coating to look like titanium when they are not. At least the same hinges on x300 were painted glossy black and didn't stick out much.

Dear /g/entelemen,
I had a dead x220 battery (or so I thought). Suddenly today a "battery firmware update" popped out, it flashed the battery, and now I got a spanking working battery! Neat.

Now I got a different problem. On 4337 dock it seems like my display keeps turning on and off for no reason (I suppose something might be overheating, but I won't investigate the issue while at work). Did somebody had a similar problem? The other monitor connected to usb 2.0 has no problems working, so I suppose this must be a dock/gpu thing.

Hey everyone t60 fag here again.

Two questions: Can I run alpine on it and expect the drivers would be present after/while I install it? Or should I look for another distro?

And two, is it possible to upgrade a t60 to 4gigs of ram?

>>

You can install two 2GB sticks, but only up to 3GB will be visible due to chipset design limitations (the upper gigabyte of the address space is reserved for various hardware-related things).

In military and the issued backpack they give us scratched the shit out of my w520
>>
>>57784238
You mean you could buy two x200 from the sale of an A-grade x201?
>>
>>57785483
By "visible" I mean that while the BIOS should show all physical memory that's installed (i.e. 4096MB is such a case), the amount usable by the OS will be lower.
>>
>>57785548
Oh fuck, well that's okay, right? Since 3gb runs fairly well stil..
>>
Ordered an x220t off eBay this Sunday and they made a tracking thing and said it shipped but tracking still hasn't updated for it.

They said yesterday that they had dropped it off that day and the shipping would update that night, but it's still not losing wanting other than the label having been made.

Are they trying to chink me? When should I ask for a refund if it hasn't arrived yet?
>>
Damnit, I have the choice between a x230 and a t430 both with 8gb of ram and a 180gb SSD.

Which one should I pick?
>>
>>57785867
3GB is all that you'll ever have on a T60(p)/X60. There's no way around that. T61(p) officially support 4GB (and unofficially even 8GB with Middleton BIOS) but have ME/AMT on board.

>dude contrarian lmao
Literally every one thinks the t420 is good. Every single reviewer, every critic, every comp sci professor, etc

Most of your concerns are just aesthetics like it being 'bulky' and the screen not being an IPS. If either of these were a concern for it's consumer base don't you think they would have changed it?

It's cheap, it's durable, it's powerful for it's price range and best of all it just werkz which is what you want in a laptop. If you want to watch chinese cartoons in upscaled 1080p for vibrant upskirts then watch it on a tv like a person who has bought equipment for that purpose would.

If you want to game then use your gaming pc or ps4. If you want to mine btc then load up those botnets. If you want to have a hassle free normie experience on a laptop then get a cheap thinkpad and enjoy a worry free experience
>>
>>57786159
>If it's good, then why does it sell well?

Enjoy your Macbook Pro.
>>
>>57786177
That's not my point at all and you know it.
It's not the bieber of laptops that people buy because it looks cool, it's the classic oldie that people will always listen to it because it's just plain good.
>>
>>57786191
Lenevo has literally be fucking with everything that has made a Thinkpad a Thinkpad, and clearly it doesn't matter to their base because they're still selling the laptops and if it hurt them $$$ they would have changed it.

Am I in favor of those changes? Some of them. Others, not so much. I however have never been a fan of older style keyboards on laptops, and I don't need a screen to be HD, but not having the worst fucking viewing angles is useful when you're trying to show someone something.

As for the bulk, it's more or less equivalent to the t430/40/50/60 so that's not an issue for me.

And as for the idea of it being cheap, they weren't cheap when they were originally released, check out the original pricing and you'll find it's comparable to how it is today if not more.

(Also, just 4 ur information, if you want to trash weebs, upscaling to 1080p is not even remotely something difficult even for a trash old computer to do. It's that placebo 10-bit bullshit and the interpolation meme that do)
>>
>>57786236
Nothing you're just said in that post has led me to believe you disagree with me.

My point was that at this current point in time a t420 is not a bad choice at all for a budget laptop that performs excellently when it comes to normie needs.

That's it.

(Also i'm a weeb as well but the point I was making was that you're meant to use different equipment for your speific needs which is why the t420 being bulky and not having a 1080p screen is a non issue)
>>
>>57786269
Oh. Sorry anon, if you meant at this point in time then I more or less agree with you. I think the t430/x230 might be a better choice for most people but eh.
>>
>>57785101

Your meme thinkpads don't even have proper spill protection. Look a t RZ8 and compare this. You spill a coffe on a thinkpad, it drains to bottom. Ooops, what's there? Yes, intake vents. It sucks coffe back in, fin.
RZ8 has drain holes on the sides and won't spill his spaghetti.

I've read the libreboot wiki.

There is this thing:

https://libreboot.org/docs/install/x200_external.html#gpio33

That, makes me think you can install libreboot, but ME will remain activated. I don't know how will it manage without the signed firmware.
>>
>>57791245
>>57791451

I actually read that again, and what i summarize is that you cannot write the bios rom, and therefore you can't install libreboot on a x200s or x200t

They describe a software fashing through os in this paragraph. Of course it doesn't work.
You solder up to bios chip pins directly with wires and flash it over SPI. That's it. Or you can change the flat chip with SOIC for easy clamping.

So I got my hands on a T430 with the standard i5-3320m and I've noticed Speccy is showing the processor temperature on idle at 60-70C. It goes up to about 92C after 2.5 loops of the x264 v2 benchmark. That seems pretty hot to me. Can anyone advise?

All """hacking""" in X200 case is: unscrew palmrest and keyboard, remove them, put a lip on the chip, press "hack the biozzz" button
Gee, how hard!
>>
>>57795078
>put a lip on the chip, press "hack the biozzz" button

Sure, it's just that simple, everyone has all the stuff in the picture sitting right in their closet and just waiting to be used.

Besides, I presume that this procedure, even if whoever performs it knows what he's doing, bears a significantly higher risk of failure than a regular firmware flash.
>>
>>57795078
This explains nothing at all. You need to have some specific hardware, cables etc. and you need to prepare it in a specific way, and then you need to follow certain steps very carefully. Nothing of which was even barely mentioned in your post.
>>
>>57795208
It was not mentioned, because I assume you have read the libreboot guide page. It is not really difficult and if you fuck up, you can always reflash original bios image.

Isn't that just bloat that is best avoided? Also does it give a choice of what to install and what not (you might want to skip the me botnet driver)?

Anyway are the drivers on Lenovo's website the actual latest, or just those that they have tested? How about updating video/audio/network etc. drivers, do you instal newer versions (downloaded from the manufacturer of the device in question) than provided on the Lenovo site? Or will the bloat suggested by >>57796091 always install latest?

No, it's a really useful tool. Doesn't install anything if you don't want it. You get a full list of available drivers and software for your machine and you pick and choose which you want it to install, then let it do its thing and you'll have a fully-functional system much faster than doing it manually.

The drivers Lenovo ships are usually up to date I think, but in the case of Nvidia drivers for dGPU models, you'll be much better off with the new feature drivers from Nvidia than the enterprise drivers that Lenovo ships.

This is the fucking thing of it. Such a prize - secret entry into every modern computer - is so precious that a state or even highly motivated private actor's incentives for breaking this tech are infinite.

In the context of this thread the main problem is that Thinkpads in particular have been subject to this since almost a decade now (since the T61(p)/X61 models that came in 2007) and only very few models could have ME disabled until now (the x200 and since recently supposedly also some Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge models).

>Manufacturer cunts keep cutting costs and laugh at idiots who not only become fond of garbage, but with time start attacking the objectively better options that used to be available.

That's just it,the whole industry race to the bottom has finally hit rock bottom, with a wealth of 'meh' tier laptops, probably many thousands on current offer, but very few that stand out of the crowd. None have decent keyboards - NONE - except asinine gaymen rigs that are clearly not optimized for portable use, but are this century's luggables.

I've often thought that there's a market for a nice computer with a kick-ass screen, a proper keyboard, and spill protection, with battery life optimized over speed. Throw on some real serial ports, etc, and you'd have a winner.

If you made it an ARM machine it could run for days on a typical modern laptop battery but my dream is a computer that runs on AAs like the old Gateway Handbook. Build in Ni-MH charging and you'd never have to worry about finding and buying unobtanium laptop batteries again.

Well theoretically only TLAs and (perhaps) Intel can do it, but more practically, anybody who were to obtain the proper keys could do it too.

As I said above any state-level actor and probably other groups or individuals would also lust over a magic backdoor that lets you see, copy, or plant anything you like on any modern PC.

But you have to assume that your computer is subject to be compromised by unknown parties who have the means (be it possession of the necessary cryptographic keys, specific non-public knowledge, or something else) to make use of the backdoor mechanisms embedded in the hardware in question.

price is objective. the guide is only good for a quick summary of the models.

look up some videos on different models and then decide from there what you want.

if you go to ebay just watch out. alot of sellers display the nicest computer they had but then will ship you one that looks like a lion chewed on it.

"New message from: itevolutionllc-8 (37Yellow Star)
We have been selling a lot of these computers and we are just getting into the ones with scratches on them but most of them are kind of nice but they might have some signs of wear. The one on the picture was one of the best ones for display. "

he took the listing down a hour later.

ebay should automatically upload their tracking information, right when they print the label...
Unless they went with another carrier, and didn't update tracking online, then it might be somewhere.
I'd message them where it is at and then wait 5 days. If they don't have tracking uploaded, essentially you will get refunded fairly quickly.

>Make it as cheaply possible Acer
>We got brand recognition, shitty specs and shit tier cooling HP
>Entry model business class ThinkPad

I'd think the Acer would def benefit you the most after you will figure out how the hell to fix the damn thing after a year.

FYI, we buy off lease computers for a reason, because most of the companies selling them want to make a buck and the companies who threw them away, already got their deductible.
Have fun when the warranty expires on the HP and Acer.

Should I get a x220, x220t, x230, or x230t? The tablet function would be awesome for drawing and shit, but at the same time I have a nice external drawing tablet that I'm sure feels better to draw on anyway. I'm also skeptical of the single hinge on the tablet models.
But at the same time, I've read that all the tablet models have an IPS display, which would make searching for one easier.

Then when it comes to the 220 vs 230, the 220 keyboard looks better, but realistically I'll be able to adjust either way. If the 230 is a decent bit less hot than the 220 though, then the trade-off might be worth it.

Help me out /g/, gonna be my first thinkpad and I wanna make sure I get the right one.

Currently got a 128Gb SSD in x230 running windows but would like to duel boot linux. Would it be better to buy a new SSD and replace the old on the sata 3 slot and partition for both OS or use the mSATA slot for a second drive at lower bandwidth? What you guys think?
>>
>>57808067

install gentoo
>>
>>57789560
What the fuck are you trying to say?
>>
>>57811540
mSATA slot is slower and the drives are more expensive and having less drives would give better battery life (maybe) so the single SSD seems like a better option. Separate drives would be more convenient though, but partitioning isn't hard.
>>
>>57811540
>would like to duel boot linux
That sounds dangerous, some distro might get hurt

Anyway I'd go with msata ssd as main drive mostly because less weight and option for a HDD/second SSD, plus in daily usage you won't notice any differences between sata2 and sata3.
>>
>>57794015

I would get a quad core for albeton live. T460p maybe if you want to buy new.

Also the 2720qm lets you run the RAM at 1600mhz instead of 1333mhz (with modded bios of course) for somewhat enhanced ram and iGPU performance.
>>
>>57807134
Check AliExpress for decently priced 9cells that have the Lenovo logo, if you pay less than $40 for a 9 cell it's guaranteed to be a fake.

>>57808698
No, only have the msata port unused.

>>57809438
The innolux 1600x900 is as shit in the color and viewing angles department as the stock 1366x768 panel but it has better brightness.

>>57812423
It also has 6mb of cache.
>>
>>57811540
I'd go for an additional drive and disconnect the Windows drive, then select boot device by pressing F12 on startup. No bootloader fuckery, separate installs, life is good.
>>

I manually installed the newest driver and it seems to have fixed the issue.

I've owned the Dell E6430, Elitebook 8470p, and T430.

I'd rank them:
1. T430
2. E6430
3. 8470p

The T430 and E6430 have the best keyboards, followed by the 8470p.

Trackpad is about the same for all of them, but the E6430 and 8470p have a slightly better one than the T430. T430 has the best nipple by far, the nipple on the E6430 and 8470p is complete garbage.

Screen is the same for all three, they're just sufficient, they won't give you eye cancer like some people claim, but they also can't be used for any color sensitive work.

T430 is easily the most portable due to its lighter weight when compared to the others.

Battery life depends on battery size and condition, but from my experience the T430 and E6430 get similar battery life with a fairly used 9 cell battery.

Do note that a 8470p with the AMD Radeon 7570M will have absolutely shit battery life, as HP made it so you are forced to always be running on the 7570M, instead of having it switch between the HD 4000 and 7570m like with the NVS chips on the E6430 and T430.

All of them have great build quality, but I'd give the edge to the T430, because of its lighter weight as stated before.

T430 has the best thermals followed by the 8470P and then the E6430. T430 stays nice and cool even under load, 8470P can get a bit warm under load, and the E6430 gets almost unbearably hot under load, think mine might need new thermal paste so my experience might not be 100% accurate.

Performance depends on the specs of the laptop itself, duh.

That's my short summary of the main three ivy bridge business laptops. Figured I'd post this since I didn't really see posts comparing them. Hopefully this helps someone with deciding which they want.
>>
>>57800915
