IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Looks good, it is an S so upgrades are going to be a pain, as are thermals.
A 120gb ssd might be limiting unless you either dont mind using alot of external storage or just dont use that much space
>>
What are recommended upgrades for a x201?

Does it make sense to install the Intel Management Engine firmware update? From its version history (pic related) it seems like it's mostly more features added to the AMT backdoor, for instance
>Added VeriSign RSA_SHA256 and Cybertrust Root Certificate hashes
Do these hashes enable more entities to make use of the backdoor?

Had anyone encountered problems after an upgrade of the regular BIOS of the x201? One person mentioned that after the upgrade the system started displaying an error on each boot requiring a key press to continue booting.

>>57738983
Is the heat really a problem on these ones? Like to the point where you wouldn't want it on your lap for long?
>>
>>57739067
It will get hot as fuck like any laptop but because ita more compact the vents and heatsink are slightly smaller, so temps are going to be high and you might slowroast your balls
This also limits what you can upgrade to. Any higher tdp processor is going to be dramatically hotter
>>

Never had any problems with heat on mine, first thing I did was repaste though.

Good to know. How is the battery life?
>>
>>57739243
Crappy, had a battery with still 2/3 of original charge and I got 1.5 - 2 hours with half screen brightness. Recently upgraded to t430s which is much better. You could of course add an ultrabay battery but I didn't bother.

I have a T420, but I want Libreboot. Can I just swap mobos with a T400? Or is that asking for trouble, and I should just get a whole new machine?

I'm running the latest Xubuntu on my x220 and I am having issues with waking up from suspend when I close my laptop lid. I will close it, then the moon icon will light up a few seconds later. I open it, enter my password, then it freezes up immediately. I have to force shutdown, I cannot do anything at all when it freezes.

Anyone else experience this with Ubuntu 16 on an x220? I can't find a solution anywhere and I'm starting to think its a thinkpad issue rather than a linux issue.

I see one on polish auction site, and well it is quite rekt, but really the only thing that has to be replaced is the case, will post photos of in the next posts.

>>
>>57742350
I have also been asking about firmware updates, but no replies so far. It seems more and more difficult to find any non-trivial info in these threads, it all seems like mostly just sperging out over whether someone overpaid/underpaid a t420 or x220 by some $5 .

>>
>>57743998
Faith in what?

Anything past T60(p)/X60 is inherently botnetted by ME/AMT (with only select models suitable for uncucking either by flashing coreboot/libreboot, or by wild sheenanigans such as http://hardenedlinux.org/firmware/2016/11/17/neutralize_ME_firmware_on_sandybridge_and_ivybridge.html).

Anything past X220/T420/T520 has a bullshit chiclet "keyboard" with a fucked-up layout and a hugeass touchpad, then also missing physical trackpoint keys. Then came the Superfish debacle which took any possibly remaining faith in Chinknovo coming to their senses away.

Not to mention, these threads have become a bullshit discussion where noting really insightful or relevant is discussed anymore beyond what you can google yourself in a minute or two.

The Thinkpad is no more. Even Scott Mueller who has always been endorsing Thinkpads doesn't recommend them anymore. Stock up on whatever you consider the last good or bearable model, because nothing better is expected to ever surface again under this brand.

On a T420, I can install a mSATA hard drive *in addition to* the WiFi card, right?

So there's a t420 for $130 and a x220 for $100 on my local craigslist right now. Both i5, 300GB HDD, the first with 6GB RAM and the second with 8, and the x220 is stated to be in 'good' condition with some white spots on the screen while the T420 is 'excellent'.

What do you guys think? When I call them, what should I be asking?

I like the idea of a smaller, portable laptop, so I'm leaning to the x220 though I'm wondering if it'd be hard to replace the screen. What advantages/disadvantages are there between it and the T420 besides size and weight? Can they both be upgraded similarly? I heard the x220 can only have one hard drive compared to two on the T420.
>>
>>57746856
I have P50 and I don't like it very much. It's mainly because it's just disappointing compared to older Thinkpads. Maybe it's fine for you.
>>
>>57747343
It's not hard to replace the screen. You can get the lenovo IPS for like $60 and all it takes is popping off the screen bezel and unscrewing it
>>
Quick question guys:
T420 vs T520
Both with same specs
Which is better? Is screensize the only difference? I've read that T420 has nvidia optimus gpu so it can support additional screens and T520 supports quad core cpu.
So T520 doesnt support multidisplay and T420 cant have quad core cpu or what?

>>57747392

Thank you. I hear the mSATA is a no-go if there's a wireless card in place. Is that true?
>>
>>57747420
No. You're thinking of WWAN, as the WWAN cards use the mSATA slot. Nobody uses those, though, so if it came with it, just remove it.
>>
>>57747343
X220 can have twod drives and T420 can have three drives
X220 has soldered non-upgradeable cpu while the T420 cpu is easily removable and upgradeable
X220 has 1366x768 with option to have an IPS screen and T420 has a shit TN screen but 1366x768 or 1600x900
X220 with i7s have usb 3.0, T420 doesn't. (Can use an ExpressCard adapter for usb 3.0 ports though)

>>57747396
Differences are screen size, maximum resolution and better cooling.
Both can have Intel iGPU + Nvidia dGPU or only Intel iGPU.
Both support quad core CPUs but the T520 has better cooling for them.

I got an used T420 for free, but there's something wrong with the fan.
When getting above 50°C (I think it's stage 2 on fan control), it will sometimes just go to a higher RPM, but sometimes start screaming like someone put his dick in it, and the whole laptop starts literally vibrating.

I looked into the fan after removing the keyboard, but nothing seems to be in its way.

Now, I installed thinkfan, and my question is, up to which temp can I safely run a T420 with the fan turned off ?

whatever is the tjunction limit, the laptop will shut down by then so it's still safe.

I disable the fan up to 65c, then fan lv1 up to 75c and then let the bios take care of it after 85c. Rarely hit 85c though even with the quad core cpu.

I'm actually typing this from my t42

There is a version that was offered with the ATI 9600 with 64mb VRAM it is a night and day difference over the 7500 most of them come with.

The 7500 will do Counterstrike 1.6 well, I can turn up all the eye candy (lel) and get 70fps usually. I actually game with it online all it does is CS and old WinXP games. Unreal 99 too.

R30 won't play much of anything from the XP era. You might still get HL and CS 1.6 low res.

T42 isn't bad get the 765 2.2ghz for it and the extended battery. It will do most apps fine, max the RAM too. It's my beater while I'm on the road if anything happens to it whatever.

Odd, worked for me when I bought it right after I woke up this morning. Actually expected it to be fixed but it wasn't. Since the laptop can have two drives, they put up different selections for hard drives and you could just select "none" in the first one, be discounted the price of that drive, and it'd just give you the ssd as a 2nd drive for free since they have to ship with a drive.

Now that you made me think about it, I should've gone with 4 gb and saved more money by adding more ram myself. Oh well.

Either way, I'm hoping Lenovo honors the order but I think they're gonna cancel them considering how many people exploited employee pricing + the ssd thing.

Probably going to end up flipping it and make two or three hundred bucks if the order goes through though, dunno yet.

>>57759040
yeah, no way I'm keeping Home. I just wasn't gonna drop 30 (or 50? can't remember) bucks for pajeet@lenovo to put pro on the laptop when I can do it myself for free.
Might actually have some fun instead and put a really cancerous meme distro instead just to see how many people i could trigger on here. Only until I find an actual purpose for the laptop though.

WHERE DO I GO INTO BIOS ON A T430S TO BOOT FROM USB???
>>
I need to replace my 5 year old laptop.

My budget is around ÂŁ800 total, these are two that I've been looking at:
MSI GL62 6QC
Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK
Both low end gaming laptops, so I'm a bit suspicious of their build quality and life expectancy.

However, after having a browse here, if thinkpads are durable, upgradable and cheap, I'm thinking they might be a better option.

My requirements are as follows:

>Durable
I'll be moving from country to country for the next 5 years or so, and I need something that will last that long (which is one of the reasons my budget is what it is). Or if it won't last that long something that has worldwide hardware support.

>2 screens
I'm a freelance translator, not especially hard work on the processor but working with 2 screens makes my life a lot easier, so a laptop that can support 2 screens at decent resolution would be ideal

>Games
I do play games, and I would like something that can play modern games, but I don't need it to run them at max settings.

>Weight and size
Not really issues, I tend to use my laptop at home, the only reason I don't have desktop is because I move around from time to time.

Is there a second hand thinkpad that would suit me, or should I go for a new laptop?

Based in the UK at the moment.

No, I'm using my 1080p monitor but yeah it works in a dual monitor setup as you can see in that image.

ExpressCard of course, as you can see I'm using the pcie mSATA slot as main SSD and no way I'm taking off the backplate every time i want to use the eGPU.

Eh, I recently went to fast ring insider previews so I could get the new windows subsystem changes, and desu the os is in a pretty good place right now.

Replaced the bundled ubuntu WSL with a RHEL wsl and now that they allow you to run windows executables in the linux subsystem it's pretty dope. Can literally run linux gui applications seamlessly side by side with the rest of my shit.

As long as you disable all the spyware/autoupdating shit it's not a bad os, and m$ has surprisingly been moving towards open sourcing a lot of their shit and taking input from the community (for WSL at least), so the future ain't looking too terrible. All it's missing for me to ditch VMs right now is working ipv4 networking + routing within WSL. They actually fixed a bunch of network stuff for WSL already in the last fast ring update so they're getting there.

However, fuck that Xbox "app" garbage. Cancerous shit desu, and annoying to disable.

i somehow disable all of it and erased a lot of it too. then i needed something( maybe .net or some other shit) so i re-enabled it, got what i need but then activated a fucking virus.

What's the difference between battery cycles and wear? I've seen batteries with substantial wear but 0 cycles.

How to recharge the battery to get most total life out of it? If you charge only to 80% and recharge at 30%, you're only using half of the total charge volume - will the lessened wear on the cells by avoiding full charge/discharge make up for the effectively reduced capacity and the more frequent charges?
>>
>>57760372
>What's the difference between battery cycles and wear? I've seen batteries with substantial wear but 0 cycles.
Lithium Ion is a mechanically unstable chemistry. The anode takes damage just sitting charged.
>>
>>57760372
charge cycles cause wear
but so does the battery just sitting there (especially if it's either fully charged or discharged)
>>
>>57760372
Yes, but it's better to take it only to 50% or so and just drain it down to 10%. Leaving it at 40-50% is a good idea if the machine spends most of its life on a charger, 80% is still quite high voltage.

With care you'll reduce the wear by 2 or 3 times, but depending on your use case it's not practical having access to only half the battery at a time.

So the cells being charged/discharged around half of the total capacity causes only very little wear? Would you recommend to set the charging limit to 55%-60% and the threshold below which to start recharging to 35%-40% to significantly extend battery life while still having some reasonable discharge margin available for working on battery if needed? Is it really better in the long run to recharge much more often while staying close to half charge than to use more of the charge range but recharge less?

I hope you meant it only figuratively, as a kernel has literally nothing on a system which works well beneath it and is completely out of its reach. The Linux kernel should be happy if it's not completely subverted by systemd in the coming years (and unfortunately that's what the latter's continued growth and overreaching expansion seems to be leading to).

Are carrier operators ok with tethering these days? Because I remember they used to outright ban it in the past and would threaten with cancelling your subscription or even penalties if such "abuse" on your part was discovered.

(Come to think of it, pretty much the same how ISPs used to approach users using NAT to allow multiple computers to share one connection, fuckers have only given in once wifi became popular and formally not allowing customers to use it became improfitable.)

The fuck kind of nazi carrier are you using? That's never really happened here in the US, at least not in the past 7 years. Tethering is typically standard in your plan depending on your carrier. If it isn't, there are ways around it. But no, there is no such a thing as a tethering ban on most carriers. At most, there is just a paywall.
>>
>>57761105
Yes, in general partial discharges despite doing more 'cycles' will result in less total wear on the battery.
I use a 50% charging limit because it spends 16 hours a day docked and topped up, just go as low as is practical/comfortable for your use and don't worry about it too much.

I'm from Europe and some years ago the carriers in my country sure had been disallowing tethering in their policies. Not the anon you're doing business with, but why would you want to sell off a perfectly good 1TB drive? Drives always come in handy, you can use it either for data backups or just as a reserve drive just in case. New drives are way more expensive than they should be by now (thanks to the 2011 Thailand floods among other things) and buying used ones is a big risk simply because hardy anyone sells off good ones.

Well, it does cost more, but lets say that it came with the i5-3427u (which is the best i5 of the two offered with the U edition) -- it performs slightly worse than the 3320m processor that you thought you were getting. So no, while being a more expensive laptop, you got a worse performing machine that MAY have better battery life. It's up to you whether or not you think this is worth it. The 2520m of the T420 is still faster than both CPUs.

>>
>>57763116
No shit, any reasonable person knows that. But carriers can detect if you have been tethering (via root or another method of getting around their OEM software detection) and if they are asshole enough, will start charging you for it. The situation is not whether or not your phone can do it, which as you said, any smartphone can function that way, but it's whether or not tethering is ALLOWED that the anon was asking about. My carrier specifically blocks it on any non-rooted/custom ROM phone unless you use something like Foxfi (or a newer method), it says on the screen to call them and add it to your plan. But they haven't ever followed through with charges after I've been tethering after I rooted. But I've known friends on Sprint who have been contacted via mail and been warned for doing the same thing.

I guess 'cause they're more recent processors. That's usually how it works.

i suggest a new carrier. mine blocks it only when roaming on other data networks. maybe you don't have many options, idk.

I don't, because all the carriers here (Oklahoma) have ass signal except US Cellular. I like them, pretty reliable and the speeds are good, upgrade options are pretty good as well. I'm rooted so it doesn't matter to me if they block it on non-root users.
