Bonus points work better on places like HDB where retention is the more difficult goal rather than volume. Music files are pretty small and easy to seed.

I think the problem can get compounded by when people have a ton of buffer and don't spend it. Creating new ways to cause people to put their buffer back into the economy is a good thing. At a certain point you run out of things to download or request.

WCD's freeleech picks helped a lot. It was a shame to see people with terabytes of buffer still snatching all of them though rather than just one FLAC or v0 of what they were interested in listening to/trying out.

This was never a problem. There are almost no users who make the most of their ratio. Most people on What.CD actually had plenty of buffer but did not use it. What is a problem though, is that people refused to seed because they had so much buffer. What.CD had a lot of torrents and retention was not outright bad, but it could have been a lot better. There were way too many torrents with 1-5 seeders.

No, make it actually hard to fucking get ratio. What killed retention on What.CD was all the neutral leceh and free leech. People just waited until download didn't count because they knew it would happen eventually. People literally made collages/bookmarks of hundreds of torrents in advance, so they could grab that shit and get out of there before the site/tracker/both would crash.

Feel free to steal this idea:

Each month 10% of a user's upload amount (not from that month, but the amount attributed to their account) should be taxed. This tax is then spread across requests.
This 10% is taken whether above 1.0 ratio or below. This way lack of activity will overtime lead loss of leeching privileges.

Ways that this can be altered:
1. differing taxes based on userclass
2. tax reduction from donation level
3. bonus points from seeding torrents that counteract tax (not requiring actual upload, and leaving capital in system for transactions)
4. perhaps ability to attribute the tax to certain categories of requests if of a certain userclass
