nostream.co database compromised - 2016-11-26

Recently we learned about a (partial) database leak from the newly created and aspiring What.CD replacement site and tracker nostream.co. In addition, everyone was promoted to sysop. To what extent and degree data has in fact been compromised, we do not know, but most prudent course of action is to assume a full db leak.

We also got our hands on a list of emails that were published; affected users have already been informed via a notification, but obviously we do not know who else joined nostream with a different email address. Given the large number of security related incidents and the ostrich-like behaviour from some staffers, I do not have the confidence that the situation will improve any time soon. Therefore we do not recommend you register on and/or use this site (anymore). We understand people are looking to fill the big gap that the departure of WhatCD left, but we advise caution in jumping in on a random new site.

In general, this is once again a good time to point out the value of keeping your account secure, by not reusing passwords and by enabling 2-step verification (with a 5BP/h bonus!). This will limit the impact that such incidents have, to the affected site.

Right now PTH does indeed seem like they are on track to attaining the best momentum and the best quality torrents. However, their current development stage is disallowing for more users, but that's ok as most of the good uploaders in the private tracker network are endorsing them.

Xanax has a shot at becoming the next What if their staff tighten up now that regs are closed, and if they prune curry accounts and ban countries like What did. However, they did start half baked (name change, how could they not think that naming the site xanax would be a problem?), and at this point only time will tell.

As for the hearing difference, I have argued over and over again that you cannot hear the difference. The human ear can only really hear up to 20khz on average, and lossy formats trimp data above that range and below 20hz, effectively making it prime for the ear.

Anybody who listens to flac and thinks they hear a difference (no matter the equipment) is lying or simply ignorant.

I usually don't download torrents, but I found a release that was only available through torrents, it was a 4k of a movie of which I already have a 1080p remux.

The torrent is over 60GB, claims to be >50Mbps 10bit HEVC 2160p. I just downloaded the screenshots (not the actual video file), and frankly they are terrible. They are 3840*2160 but the quality is worse than the original bluray.

Are screenshots in torrent files usually representative of what I'm about to expect if I download the whole thing?

Until AACS2.0 is cracked everything you find that is """4k""" is usually just taken with a capture card. The file size is gigantic because it's a raw stream but the quality is subpar in comparison to the original master.

I don't even know if capture cards can capture 10bit or if that's just a plain lie.

Add to that that many movies received a 2k digital intermediate which means the 4k release won't be significantly better anyway, even though the movie might've been shot on film.
