I have a Huawei HG532s modem that distributes wifi across my dorm.

My roomate's a jackass and can't be bothered to respect my usage, torrenting all day everyday, watching movies and downloading games.

How can I limit the wifi output of my modem?
>>
Every few hours I leave my computer on (I'm using Windows 10 64-bit), it begins to fill the physical memory to maximum capacity, and then it usually crashes. I mainly have media or a game playing along with a few Chrome tabs open. Sadly, it's becoming more common of a problem than when I first experienced it. The last stop code I got today was DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I'm using Sysinternal's Process Explorer to watch the memory fill up, but I can't determine what process is causing the problem. It seems to happen at random, and I don't know the first thing about debugging such a problem. My best assumptions so far are that it could be something with the page file, or my RAM is going bad, but I've done the Windows Memory Diagnostic and it says no errors everytime.

Is there anything I can try, or at least a program that I should be using to diagnose/fix this problem?
>>
I've got a problem that may be easy to solve. I need a Windows program that can:

1) Open a Google search query
2) Grab the first link
3) Take the numbers at the end of the link and open another link

This is to automatically grab CSV files from a discography webserver that doesn't have freeDB support. Example:

The album's title is 'Nostalgia', so I search site:vocadb.net nostalgia. First result is http://vocadb.net/Al/9372. The link I need is http://vocadb.net/Album/DownloadTags/9372

The goal is to do this from directly inside foobar2k with a hotkey. I've got a component that can run external programs, so all I need is a program that can do that.

Hey guys, yesterday my laptop crashed and wouldnt boot into windows afterwards, giving me the error "Unmountable Boot Drive"
I got a bootable usb with windows 10 on it but the setup process freezes on "Setup is starting". The repair computer option also does nothing
I can still boot into my xubuntu partition just fine
So I guess my question is what do I do now? Is there any way I can run chkdsk feom ubuntu or from bios or something?

How do I find out whether the correct driver is running on debian?
When I freshly installed Debian, only ethernet would work, but wifi didn't.
So I install a non-free Atheros driver and it worked.
I then did an apt upgrade and aptitude did some weird shit on the side when I was installing some other unrelated shit and after a reboot neither ethernet nor wifi worked.
I found out, that:
1. Normal DHCP wasn't working
2. When I assign eth0 an address manually and set a default gateway, the ethernet connection works
3. Looking into the kernel log it tells me that it has some struggle loading the atheros driver. It tries a few times and fails but then it tries again and there is no further line explaining if it worked or not.
How do I now find out where I fucked up and what packages I need to get again? How do I check, whether the atheros driver is running currently?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as /g/ - Technology, is in fact, /g/ - Anime/Technology, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, /g/- Anime plus Technology. /g/ is not a board about technology unto itself, but rather another board of the anime themed website 4chan. Many /g/ users visit a website about anime every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the board of /g/ which is widely used today is often called "Technology", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically another board about anime, developed for a website about anime.

>>

Do you think I could possibly test it by booting a Linux distro from a thumb drive instead? I only ask because trying to set up a fresh Windows partition seems to take forever for me, and I'm trying not to spend my whole day on repairing this if I don't have to.

Also: I don't need an answer if no one has one, but is there any reason why the Windows Memory Diagnostic could be lying to me about my RAM?

I had Office 2010, then installed Visio 2013, which fucked up things, so I completely uninstalled both and then tried to install the latest which is free for students (if where you're studying has the subscription), but I couldn't, lots of errors and every time I fixed one another popped up.

Same shit with SQL Server and Visual Studio. Visual studio still works but SQL Server is fucked now, and I need it to test something with Analysis Services.

Is there any way to completely clean Office/SQL versions from Win7? Is reinstalling the OS the only option?

I'm asking here in case someone had the same problem, I'm sure it's common since MS has godawful compatibility even with their own software versions.
I haven't reinstalled Windows in almost 4 years, and doing it for this stupid reason would be a pain in the ass.

A bit more /3/ but also thought /g/ might help.

I'm trying to render shit for my portfolio (nothing amazing, just shit out of college like pic related) and realizing my computer is kinda shit.
It's an AMD A8-5500 APU processor. The whole thing was a pre-made ASUS Desktop PC CM1745 Series.
I upgraded my GPU to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 a year or so ago.

So, my question is,
What would be the best balance for price vs. power for a CPU for doing rendering work?

I'm a poor fuck and this shit was meant to help me get a job.

How do I see the fingerprint of the host I've connected to through ssh?

More specifically, I'm using ConnectBot, and it remembers the fingerprint and just connects. Now, I'm connecting from another machine, and it asks if the fingerprint is okay. I'm on Windows 7, if I click on a gif it opens in Chrome instead of Windows Photo Viewer or whatever that default thing is. If I'm looking at another picture in that and I go to the next one with the arrow button, I can see gifs but not any animation. I assume I can get it to open them in there by doing the change default applications thing in control manager, but any tips for viewing animated ones? Is it easiest to just keep viewing them in chrome instead of installing another program for it? I like being able to use the same program for all my pictures, and that the windows one is really small and fast.

>ssh-keygen -lf <keyfile> tells you the fingerprint of an encryption key. So where are the keyfiles of the server?
> Usually they are in the directory /etc/ssh/ or a similarly named directory, where you can find several keys:
lava:~$ ls /etc/ssh/*key*
/etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key.pub
/etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key.pub /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
/etc/ssh/ssh_host_key /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub

>This server has three keys, each of which comes as a pair of a private key (no extension) and a public key (extension .pub). Only root can read the private keys (after all, they are private), but everybody can read the public keys.
>In the message above, ssh shows you the RSA key ("RSA key fingerprint is ..."), so you will check the fingerprint of the server's public RSA key:

>lava:~$ ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub

There are Windows updates that fix these problems. Download them separately from the MS site first. For Windows 7 it is Windows6.1-KB3050265-x64 and Windows6.1-KB3102810-x64. I don't know whether they are universal or just for 7 but yeah if you google something along these lines you should find what you seek.

So i just had a particularly nasty and unexpected BSOD ostensibly caused by my wlan card which is made by atheros (athrx.sys caused it) and now i want to try updating the driver so it doesn't happen again, however the manufacturer domain seems to be defunct and this thing here is one of the only sites left offering said drivers;

>>
>>57651923
No. It takes 16ms to display a frame at 60fps. Your latency to the server is probably at least 30ms.

People wanking over monitor response times are morons. Unless youre a pro competing over lan, it is completely irrelevant, and you have problems if you feel you are among that echelon sitting at home.

get a used Xeon E5 off ebay instead unless all you do is play gaymes

that way you won't even lose cores. only problem is finding inexpensive LGA2011 motherboards.

Is this definitely my graphics card's fault? If it is, how come I can still somewhat use it? Can any other components cause this? Right now on Windows the device manager shows that yellow box with an exclamation mark in the device manager for the graphics card.

I don't mind buying a new card, but it would suck if I bought a new one just to find out it's some other component's fault.

www.mingw.org
and
curl win32 - Generic from https://curl.haxx.se/download.html
ddl https://bintray.com/artifact/download/vszakats/generic/curl-7.51.0-win32-mingw.7z
*copy&paste the content of the curl folder into mingw to 'install' libcurl.

After you have managed to install mingw, you can create a .bat file near your code.c to compile like this :
c:\mingw\bin\gcc code.c -o gl.exe -lcurl
@pause

dont forget to put libcurl.dll near the .exe after compilation it can be found in the bin folder of curl.

My computer used to run fine but now it runs like absolute ass. My friend's laptop can boot/launch things faster than mine by at least 2x. I'm pretty sure I really need to reinstall windows (8.1) because I consistently get errors and occasional bluescreens, but I'm just too lazy. Also, my computer's about 3 years old so I'm looking to upgrade it as well.

To sum all of that up, I have a few questions:

Easiest way to back up data? I just drag and drop it onto my external hdd. Is there some magical program? I'd assume not but it's good to ask, I suppose.

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 10 if I'm already on 8.1? I like the look of 10 better but am afraid of spying and "muh privacy" and "dat botnet."

What would be the best course of action for upgrading my computer as it currently is?

Current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tLYqBP

Definitely thinking of upgrading my GPU to some newer NVIDIA card.

I mainly just use my computer for gaming and having lots of tabs (60+) open in Chrome.

So today I installed ubuntu and...it crashed. Several times. This confirms that my problem is a hardware issue and not a software issue.

I managed to take pictures of the error reports, so here is one of them. If you would like to see more I will post more.

If anything I just hope that these error reports will point to the exact component which is causing the problem.

Since you mentioned the "back" button, I assume you mean a collection of images you can scroll through?

Would anyone care to recommend a basic, sturdy, general use laptop or brand? Most guides I found, including in the sticky, focus on gaming. I have a PC for that, I just need something that will hold up well with heavy use - I use my laptop extensively every day for work. It's an oldish Vaio that has held up remarkably well and I'm looking for something similar, but it seems like everything out there is a damn netbook now.

Bitdefender was worth the $60 for the ability to install on three separate systems and the ability to track it, if it ever got stolen.

You could also remotely format it (did it by accident and lost SO much home made pr0n) and there was no way I could recover it, even with FBI-tier CP searching software.

>>
>>57657927
Why can't you put your cable modem in the room with the wall jack, then connect the cable modem to a wireless router?

It is technically possible to add a wireless link between your cable modem in the wall, but you're probably not going to find any off-the-shelf product that does it. There's no reason for anyone to make something like that because wireless routers exist.

>>
>>57658033
well it's just that my old phone broke not that long ago so i now have a really old froyo one, and i'm going to a concert soon, and i really wanna save this experience somehow so i'm gonna just carry my phone in my shirt and do recording of it from the phone. so i wanted to know if i would have gotten much higher quality with the other phone. the example above is exaggerated though, it's more like a $70 vs $200 phone or so (at their default price, today they are $0).

considering the piece of shit of phone that it is, the quality of the mic is pretty damn impressive when recording voice though, both in range and sound to my non-technical ears.
>>
>>57658073
>What's the best way to configure the wifi for the customers?
Do you want it to be open, or do you want to give a passcode on receipts (so only customers get it)?
>>
>>57658112
I suppose open since we don't issue receipts until they leave.
>>
>>57658103
if you have the model name/number of the old phone, it will peobably have specs including the quality of the microphone. That may give you an idea of whether it is higher quality or not than a $50 one, as you can quantitatively compare them.
>>
>>57657268
It's just a terminological distinction, usually they're the same piece of equipment. A router is a piece of hardware that routes packets. A gateway is something that connects one network to another. The gateway function on a network is usually performed by a router, though it can also be done by a bridge or a managed switch (which is arguably a rotuer).

You are not responsible for what users do on your public wifi network, just like your ISP isn't responsible for what you do. But for a number of reasons you should not just leave the connection open. Set a password, post it at the counter or give it to customers on request, and change it periodically. A splash page isn't a bad idea, or you can just post your wifi policy conspicuously.

Not really. There's plenty of info on google. Assuming you're just offering a hot spot in a small cafe and not trying to start your own regional ISP, you really don't have to do anything complicated. A consumer grade router will be fine, and you don't need to do anything special configuration-wise.

>>57658636
1. An unsecured wireless network is vulnerable to eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks. Having a password doesn't completely eliminate the risk, but means attackers at least have to come in and get the password. Google can't intercept your traffic while they're driving by. That's also why you change the password periodically.

2. Leaving the network open leaves you susceptible to IoT devices and other garbage that might connect automatically and might be full of malware. Again, using a password doesn't eliminate this risk, but it means there will have to be some human intervention for the devices to connect, and it will have to be repeated each time you change the password.

3. If you have a splash page or post the password along with your terms of use, you have an additional layer of protection if someone does something illegal on your network. That's not the case if they can plausibly claim to have connected to an open network without any knowledge of who was operating it.

Find a mouse that is most comfortable to you and stick with it.
