I need a new monitor and have been looking at 4K monitors because I'm a programmer. My thinking was to get a 4K monitor because that would allow me to display more text on my screen.

I'm not made of money so I've been looking at cheaper 4K options and it seems there's some pretty good deals for 27" 4K monitors.

However, a buddy of mine told me that there's no way that I'll be able to use 27" monitor at its native resolution because the text will be too small.

Hmm.. is he right? So 4K is a just another meme?

Is 163 ppi unreadable? never seen one in person so can't comment. my current monitor is 1080p @ 24 and while I can see pixels if I come close, it's perfectly readable at its native rez.

There are 2 "kinds" of 4K (i.e. 3840x2160/2160p/UHD) monitors. There are 4K high-DPI screens, these offer much improved image quality and are basically smaller screens. 4K @ 27" would be a high-DPI screen. I have one of these, running everything at 100% scale isn't unreadable but it's definitely below the comfort zone. I find 125% scaling to be acceptable and at this point you've still got more work area than a 27" 1440p monitor.

The 2nd kind are 4K monitors with typical DPI, i.e. close to 96. These are large (think >40") and you'd run them at 100% scaling and text would be the same size as on a normal monitor. Image quality isn't improved, but there's shitloads of space. This is what you want if you want lots of text on screen.

This is what this thread looks like at 4K with no scaling. It's perfectly readable to me on my 27" screen but a bit bigger would be more comfortable. I'm a programmer too, in practice I've set the font a bit bigger in my tools/IDEs.

I have a 27" 4K monitor and I find it perfectly usable without scaling. I don't have particularly amazing eyesight either (I wear glasses). The one area where you will need scaling is web browsing, as many sites look absolutely ridiculous without it, but that's something that can be handled at a browser level. Other programs are absolutely fine IMO.

Incidentally, I wasn't expecting much from the 4K meme when I bought it (coming from 1080p), but man, that pixel density at 27" really does look incredible. Going back to 1080p is utterly impossible once you've seen it in person.

That's what you get when marketing thinks it's a cool idea to use cinema nomenclature standards for consumer use.
The whole K thing came about from the film scanning process where the CCD scanners operated in increments of 1024 pixels. For instance 2K was 2048 pixels wide by however tall the image format is, for instance 1080 or 858, since various films are matted differently. It only makes sense for scan width to remain constant in this case.
However, film formats are often overscanned for consumer use, so 2048x1152 is eventually cropped down to 1920x1080, and that's how we settled on that standard. Why it wasn't called "2K" back then is anybody's guess, maybe they wanted it to make more sense as a pair with 720p that was already around at the time.
There are actual 4096x2160 true 4K monitors out there, but since they're intended for film editors, they're also very expensive.

No you mongoloid, it's still a flat LCD panel, it's just curved so that all the pixels are more-or-less facing your eyes. This is pretty good for color accuracy as well as augmenting the illusion of depth in certain video games.

When you draw a straight line on the screen, if you are looking from above or below the centerline of the monitor, it will appear curved because, obviously, the screen is curved. If you look at it dead-on, the line will be straight, but you will notice the upper and lower edges of the screen are slightly distorted.

I should also note that there's a optical sweet spot in these curved displays where you can't really perceive distortions, but on the 24" model it's maybe 6 inches away from the panel, lol

but yeah, one curved display in the middle for vidya, two flat panels on the sides for accuracy. Works great.

The point of 4K/ High PPI isn't more desktop space, it is to make the pixels so small that things like text become very sharp.

You can scale it by 200% and that will essentially give you the same desktop space as 1080p monitor while still keeping everything on screen very sharp and clear.

Or just scale it 125/150% since the pixels are so small to begin with any kind of scaling artifacts will be very difficult to notice if at all.

Please look at my pic on that display. Make sure it's being displayed at native resolution. Measure 2 feet from the panel to your eyes.

If there is a clearly defined gap between the adjacent lines and you can read my tiny message, then you can see every pixel and HiDPI would be a significant advantage.

If you cannot, you may have some form of hyperopia and should consider booking an eye test. I can see every pixel of this when I'm 2ft from a higher-density screen than yours.

macOS is different. Every Mac application works well with scaling because Apple made sure that all the toolkits work well with it.

OK anon, I can see the gap between the lines from 2ft away. I csn see vertical and horizontal gaps between the lines.

BUT, would the difference be that great if you also count subpixel rendering? I run Linux and all my text is aliased due to subpixel rendering and I don't see any jaggies.

What your buddy has failed to consider is the following:

1. It depends strongly on your viewing distance
2. It depends strongly on your eyesight
3. It depends strongly on your font size
4. Even if it were true, it would still improve the quality of the text by allowing you to use higher-resolution glyphs.

Reality isn't as simple as your buddy's self-centric viewpoint is making it seem. He seems like an extremely sort-sighted and narrow-minded person. I would unfriend him at once.

One mental model you could use is that, as long as you can make text small enough to hit your minimum comfortable reading size, your working area depends only on the monitor's surface area and not the actual resolution. But of course, in practice you can use smaller glyph sizes more comfortably on a higher-DPI monitor, simply because text retains far more legibility.

If you've ever been hit by pixel-induxed font size limitations on 1080p, which I certainly have, then you would benefit from a higher DPI than whatever you were using. I remember wondering why terminus at 12 pixels couldn't represent bold glyphs, when I realized that the pixels simply weren't available to do so, even though it would look fine on paper / on an infinite DPI monitor.

So higher DPI has an advantage up to a certain point, where the extra DPI buys you no additional font size reduction. At that point, your surface area becomes the only contributing factor to your working area - so buying a larger monitor would be better, independent of whether it's 4K or 5K or 8K or whatever.

Of course, in practice you also have to consider viewing distance, which contributes towards apparently visual size just as strongly as DPI/resolution and display diagonal do. (They're all linear contributors). So moving from 24" to 27" is the same as moving your head back by a few inches.

In practice, people use their monitors at wildly different viewing distances, with certainly far more variation than the measly 10% difference between 24" and 27". So once you factor in the different viewing distances, and differing eyesights, it becomes almost impossible to make blanket statements about this without actually testing it for your situation and your needs.

By the way, this is also a great method of simulating what a 4K or whatever monitor will approximately look for you.

Measure your current viewing distance to your display, then double it. You now know what a display of twice the DPI would look like (assuming your viewing distance remains the same).

You can do the same to simulate pretty much any DPI you want, to within reason (you have to remain within the operating parameters of your eyes' focusing)

Because for some reason they decided to start pushing the DCI cinema standard names on the consumer end.

1080p was FHD on the consumer end, while its DCI cinema standard was 2K which was 2048x1080

4K is a DCI standard of 4096x2160, the consumer version is UHD but the fucking manufacturers felt 4K sounded cooler and pushed that instead.

You'll note that "4K" blurays properly use the term UHD as they are not DCI 4K.

DCI 4K is a standard, defined in the DCI DCSS document. UHD-1 is a standard, defined in the ITU-R BT.2020 document.

I own a 27" 4k Dell panel. It's nigh perfect in terms of pixel density (anti aliasing is almost pointless in games this way) and so far the best way to view 4k media. While viewing text at native resolution with no scaling is possible, it's bordering on uncomfortable. Just a few more inches should do the trick, though. Do not listen to the retards who claim 4k doesn't pay off below a certain screen size. They're the same buffoons who own +60" TVs with obsolete grainy 1080p fecal resolution.

It's hard to explain. They had the flat and curved screens right next to each other, and after looking at them both for extended periods of time, I just preferred the curve more.
It felt nicer on my peripheral vision.

I suggest you experience it for yourself though, I doubt the curve is for everyone. And size plays a big part of it.

When I looked at the flat screen, it didn't feel as good on my eyes as the curved screen.
LGs 55 inch OLED TVs come in curved and flat, at the same price. They are exactly the same apart from the curve.

Camera sensors are typically all over the place. A quick google search:

Panasonic VariCam is 4096×2160
RED RAVEN is 4608×2160 (the others they sell today are even higher res, typically ~6K)
Blackmagic 4K is 3840×2160
Sony AX1 is 3840×2160
Canon EOS C500 3840×2160

If anything, both 3840×2160 (UHD-1) and 4096×2160 (DCI 4K) are the most common by far.

I have an Asus PB279Q 27 inch monitor, it's IPS and I love it. I have not have any issues with text being too small as the Windows scaling has worked perfectly for me (I have it set at 150%). I sit about an arms length from monitor and I can say that what people say online and what you see in person is completely different. I have not had an issue with text sizes for the 6 months that I have owned this monitor.

Yes, 4096*2160 is 256:135, just one of the many ratios.
You might've heard about 16:9 and 16:10, there's also 4:3 and 5:4 and 21:9
But let's go deeper into 16:9 and 16:10.
You see if you have a ratio of 16:9 with a pixel width of 4096, you get 2304.
And if you have a ratio of 16:10, you get 2560.

If anything, it's the other way around. 1440p would look like shit because it doesn't fit neatly, while 1080p works out to be exactly 1:4 ratio, so it looks pretty much like it would on a 1080p monitor.

1440p is only the vertical resolution. The horizontal resolution could be anything.

1440p as a marketing term usually comes in a set aspect ratio, but you could have it in any aspect ratio just like there are some 4:3 720p TVs out there.

I've got that same LG ultrawide, and it's wonderful.

Most games either have native support, or you can use Flawless Widescreen for little tweaks that fix FOV and HUD on games that don't really support it.

You can also use an addon for Netflix that enables 21:9 ratio on letterbox'd movies, but the quality suffers.

It really shines when you get a blueray rip of a movie; very immersive and comfy viewing experience.

HOWEVER

I also have a 27" monitor on the side, and even with the ultrawide, you're still going to want a secondary monitor if you're used to it.

I have an LG 27UD68. Running ubuntu unity with no scaling. Primarily web development in webstorm. Personally have no issues seeing the text from arms length away. I only zoom in on chrome.

4k was the best decision I've made for productivity.

20" is around 110ppi, it's fine for 1080p, though most monitors come in at 22" which is almost exactly 100ppi

42" 4k is slightly over 100ppi, which means you can see all the pixels from a normal viewing angle
