MAM has open interviews twice a week iirc, it isn't that great unless you want to build a library or have particular interests in mind. A lot of it isn't presented very well, like poor quality book conversions between multiple formats. There's a lot of dead torrents, and sometimes when there's one or two seeders they cap their upload speed so it may take a lot longer. It is good for introductory or slight interest into a lot of topics, or if you just want things to read.
As for building reputation... it's a little tricky, there isn't really reputation, but you may want to start by getting onto MAM, sit there for a month and get vip which is easy enough, then look at the unofficial invite forum for IPT, which can satisfy some needs, and there's an official invite forum for the geeks, which'll take you to other middle-tier trackers. From there you can eventually work your way around and up to bib or other sites. If you ever need a good ratio proof, join cgpeers which has open invites 48 hours every 1st and 15th, everything is freeleech and it's hilariously easy to just seed some new torrents for a couple weeks and you'll have a tb of upload.
WCD was literally the starting point for the vast majority of people, the lesser traveled route was usually GGN or other sites that have since shut down or stopped inviting. There really isn't an easy entry into trackers anymore, unless you get to know someone.
