Well, you are the one saying people are wrong while presenting only subjective opinions on what you just said to be "slight differences"
Besides, the person asking already said he can't get a V6 because it costs much more than the 7506.

AD700x, or AD900x?

Specifically using this for LAN parties, so it's strictly meant for gaming.
Price doesn't matter, but I don't want anything that requires an amp. (Less cables / stuff to carry, the better.)

US.
AD700x is $103, AD900x is $135, and $32 isn't that much of a difference for me.
Willing to spend around $200-250, but the more expensive the headphones, the more likely I'd need an amp.

To clarify, I already have a good set of headphones for at-home usage, and looking for a more portable setup for said LAN parties.
>>
>>57529420
Also for gaming, I'd like to specify that I prefer open back cans, and for it to have a large soundstage - hence why I'm currently looking at those two headphones in particular.
>>
>>57529240
I wouldn't get open headphones for gaming, but I guess it makes sense if you're at a LAN party.

Sennheiser HD558 and HD598 (they sound bad on high impedance sources).
AKG K240 is also good and can be found for almost half the price of HD558. Don't let the price fool you, it's not important for headphones.
AKG Q701/K702/K701/K612/K7XX, pick the cheapest one: they don't absolutely need an amp.

They do. But if you are that cheap just go with a $10~ PCM2704 Burr-Brown DAC white color sound card. Higher volume than onboard.

Anyone try these out? They're the Status Audio CB-1s. I'm looking for some headphones with a fairly neutral sound signature but that can handle sub bass well and I think I'm going to go for this. Anyone have experience with them?
>>
>>57529619
No they don't. You can drive them at a satisfying volume even out off a standard sound card.
>>
>>57529644
Liar. It is just under ten bucks. Obvious difference and sounds louder with K702. If you're content with AKG with your volume loudness then fine. You win arguement.
>>
>>57529469
$80, Sony MDR7506 if you want closed back.

For open backed there's the AKG K240. Few selections on this one.
$61 for standard version.
$50 for white version off Massdrop if you don't mind waiting a few weeks for shipping.
$87 for MK II isn't worth it. Has same drivers and everything as old models, just colored different.

>>57529600
I have a few friends with the K240. I find its treble shrill and fatiguing to listen to.
Sound stage is alright, but nothing special compared to HD558's or especially K7xx's I've listened to.
However, K612 and above definitely need amplification. Even if the K240 doesn't, it still benefits greatly from it.
But comparing the HD558 / HD598 vs AD700x / AD900x, the Audio Technicas still win out on soundstage.

>>57529644
A cheap USB sound card might help, but at a LAN party I'd still need the volume cranked louder than normal.

If you find canalphones comfortable (for most I'd say they are not), Ety Kids. It's a deep insertion in-ear which has a sound signature leaning towards highs and arguably the most neutral in your price range. Ety MK5 would be a direct upgrade to the Kids and it's 10 dollars over your budget. Similar design but smoother response and higher sensitivity. Just know that these both require deep insertion to the ear canal and this might be the opposite of comfortable for some.

For something within your budget with a relatively balanced sound and standard in-ear form factor, Soundmagic E10 is a decent pick.

>>57529644
That depends on the "standard sound card", what kind of content is being played and how loud one considers to be satisfying. Those headphones are on the less sensitive end of models in production and the kind of headphones many would consider a discrete amplifier a necessity for.

Inherently bandwidth-heavy lossless codec(s) doesn't magically replace the need for lossy ones, especially not when there is no benefit in perceived sound quality if lossy encode is high enough quality. Nobody is going to waste internet bandwidth streaming lossless formats when the same practical quality for the end user can be done in a fraction of the data rate.

Useless spec which only serves to confuse people. What you can gather from that is: "this headphone amplifier has higher than average output voltage". It should be fine at driving something like the AKG K7-series phones which are relatively insensitive(despite their low impedance), DT 880/990 high impedance models, HD 6xx-series Sennheisers and the like.

I'm looking for a $75-$200 pair of headphones. I don't have an amp, but I do have a dedicated sound card.

I want it to be mainly for listening to music, and occasionally for watching movies/playing games. A neutral sound is a plus, but comfort is very important. I prefer closed back, but I'm flexible. I've never used open back headphones before.

Passive speakers/amp/Dac/Headphone amp guy here.
You're right it's coax spdif in, that won't work. RCA splitters on the DAC to the headphone amp could work?
I think I'm going to skip on the DAC and headphone amp combo for now and just go for the speaker amp and connect that to my pc via input RCA to 3.5mm cable.
this one (2 x 160W stereo):
https://www.amazon.com/SMSL-SA-98E-TDA7498E-amplifier-digital/dp/B00JESRNKO

specs of speakers:
I think it's 75 RMS (jbl 230)
Sensitivity (2,83 V/1 m): 88 dB
Maximum Recommended Amplifier Power 20 – 150W
Nominal Impedance 8 Ohms

And other option for now:
peak 300W
continual 75W
92 dB
Impedance 8 Ohm

However there's also this device, SMSL Q5 Pro. It has a DAC built in and a remote control.
https://www.amazon.com/SMSL-Q5-Pro-black-Component/dp/B017W12UCU
specs:
mpedance adaptation: 4-8 ohm
Maximum output power: 50W / 4 Ohm 35W / 8 ohm
Dynamic Range: 102d BSNR: 81dB

Would these power the speakers loudly or is it too weak?

Bass is better with HM5 pads, but you also have to worry about the highs. Putting felt over the driver would help.

As long as you're not expecting amazing clarity, and know the bass is ultra present, they're not bad once modded.

Righto. 400i's are fairly efficient. They don't need a whole lot of juice. You easily power them off something like a Micca Origen+, an E10k, or any of the cheaper SMSL DAC/Amps

The Schiit stack [What people call magni+modi combo] is a bit overkill, but if you don't want to ever have to upgrade for ages, while having a ton of features, it's the way to go I guess.

The poor finish is quite the downside.
Hifiman used the beta demo as a way to gauge product interest, and upped the prices accordingly. I would call it overpriced in that light.
I didn't find anything compelling about the sound, I would have taken the Ether over them easily.

I do like them a lot, it's the one i listen to when i'm in the mood for something bassy, i'm not sure if they are worth 100 bucks since i live in Brazil, but i's put it somewhere near HD558 and MDR V6 in terms of quality, if that helps a bit in the general price range (keep in mind that this is just my opinion), they are very sturdy too and the detachable cable can be replaced by any regular cable (V-moda for example) which should help with the durability, they are semi-open, so they isolate more than the HD558/AD900X/K701 and less than the DT770 or the MDR V6, with that said, i do occasionally listen to them in the bus, they don't isolate as much as i would consider perfect for this kind of thing, but it's good enough in general.
The pads are very comfortable, but i do find the headband a bit annoying some times, although adjusting it well enough usually helps with discomfort, but it does hurt a little after 3 hours or so.
Sorry, never tested the SHP9500 so i can't really compare them.

Honestly yeah. I prefer HE-400s with lambskin HM5 pads personally, but that brings out the low end quite a bit resulting in a less clear sound.

Coming from 598's the natural upgrade is HD 600/650's, but I'd say the hifimans are better.

Solid state is the only way.
Don't fall for the tube meme.
>>
>>57536401
You are already using a device as a headphone amplifier and if you are playing digital files, you have DAC, too. Your question is stupid and depends on the quality of the gear you have now.

Amplifier/DAC checklist:
-Is it too quiet?
-Is the output impedance too high (fixable by equalization)?
-Is there noise/EMI or hiss to it?
-Does it sound distorted as you start to crank up the volume?
If the answer is no, don't get one.

Chances are no, nothing that you couldn't alter with EQ.
>>
>>57536570
>Don't fall for the tube meme.

Could you expand a bit on that, please?

The only time I heard tube amps was guitar amplifiers and the tube amp does have more tone and "warmth" than solid state.

For example, the guitar on ZZ Top's 'Tush' is amplified by a tube amplifier. And I haven't heard a solid state guitar amplifier reproduce the sound yet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jB_QM73Slk
>>
>>57536901
The "tube sound" can be emulated eliminating the hassle of warm up and all that.
Solid state lasts longer or rather, tubes burn out.
>>
>>57536973
The replacement tube for the Vali2 is $20 and they last for 5000 hours.

5000 hours is 2 hours of listening, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If I get 2 tubes that's 4 hours of listening a day.

Isn't that enough? I don't think I listen to music more than 4 hours a day.
>>
>>57537051
Guitar amps and headphone amps don't do the same thing. Guitar amps are aimed at coloring the signal so it's pleasing as compared to headphone amps, which ideally boost a signal without coloring it.
>>
>>57536401
kind of, they suck at some frequencies on weaker amps
and sound terrible on amps with more than 10ohm output impedance

most onboard dacs are very driver dependent, sound can change with each driver update, and you'd never know which one was better if device is not popular
there is benefit to proper usb dac, it loses this correlation and always sounds consistently
>>
>>57536901
you realize that you listen to that sound on a solid state amp of your pc?

Headphone stand for STAX Lambdas?

I'm debating getting the official one because of the Lambdas weird shape and I'm worried that that the usual Omega one would have a potential of straining the leather or the band.

Comments?

>>
>>57537420
Literally anything will work just as good for a fraction of the price. It's just a stand.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/meme/32696767811.html
>>
>>57537461
Yeah but some stands cause strain to the leather earcups due to pressure put on them from being too big.
>>
>>57536901
Tubes used for headphone or loudspeaker amplification do not sound warm/cold/whatever on their own. A properly designed tube amplifier does not alter the sound in any way because they would operate in a range of signals and current which is suitable for them. Guitar amplifiers are different in this because they add distortion, often on purpose when the amplifier is driven to clipping, and thus alter the sound. This is part of music production, a way to alter one instruments' sound to sound more pleasing. You do not want to clip any amplifier used to reproduce audio and the result of clipping is not necessarily warmth, tubes or solid state. And you probably realize if you want to hear that guitar amplifier warm/soft clipping as it was when recorded, you need audio gear that doesn't add anything to the signal on its own. This can be a solid state or a tube amplifier

Hello /hpg/! I've narrowed down my headphone hunt to the following: K240, HD 558, ATH M40x, and the Status Audio CB-1 Closed Back.

Are all of these alright without an amp? All I have is a dedicated sound card (STX II that I got secondhand). I'm hoping someone who has tried a few of these out before can give me some advice, so many headphone reviews out there sound like complete bullshit.

My price range is pretty flexible, so if there's something great that I'm missing around this pricerange or if I truly need an amp I'm willing to buy one.

I'm wanting them primarily to listen to music and have it sound great. I'm really not experienced enough to say I have a preferred sound signature, but I know my current headset produces a very muddled sound. I've only owned shitty headsets, but I'm very open to hear about the pros and cons of different sound signatures.

Accurate, but not quite the whole story. He's right in that a well designed tube amp shouldn't have a different frequency response than a well designed SS amp.

If you take a close look at the specs of similar quality solid state and tube amplifiers, you'll notice tube designs generally have higher distortion than solid state. The reason for this is that tubes, by nature of their design, introduce distortion in the form of low-order harmonics.

Low order harmonic distortions are considered by many to be pleasurable, as opposed to the harsh and unpleasant higher order distortions found in shitty / cheap equipment of all kinds.

It's also where the reputation for tubes having a "warm" sound come from. Those distortions can "soften" or take the edge off of many sounds. That's what people are going for when they buy tubes.

So buy a tube amp if you want tube character, with the full understanding that it will have higher (but "pleasant") distortion compared to solid state. That said, for 95%+ of people, solid state is the way to go.

- MrSpeakers leather headband
- Antlion ModMic 4.0 (w/o mute switch)

I've got a full set of modding materials in a box under my desk right now, cotton, multiple types of adhesive backed foam and felt, newplast, etc. I haven't done any extensive modding yet because I was waiting for the online modding community to get some measurements up on a few basic mods for the MK3's before I made any decisions on what I wanted to do with them.

I'll probably mass load the cups some, install sound absorbent foam on all surfaces, a few little things like that to reduce resonance / reflections, but honestly even stock I prefer them to the AKG K702 I had previously.

>>57543076

I don't have them, but they are supposed to be worse in general than the Mark 3.
>>
>>57543172
Righto. Just been interested since I rarely see them even mentioned here on /hpg/
>>
>>57543213

I think they are great headphones for the price, and I recommend them frequently to people who have or are willing to buy an amplifier (they're a little power hungry / respond well to amps that are suited to higher impedence headphones).

Granted much of this is purely subjective, but I can say I prefer them to both the AKG K701/K702 frequently mentioned here as well as a pair of K240 my roommate has. I've never had any of the issues that some people mention with them like discomfort or cable problems.

I'm going to do all the standard mods just to deal with the weaknesses of the housing (only ever going to be so well built at $150), but I plan on eventually buying a high grade planar like the LCD-2 for music listening, while these will stay on as my "daily drivers" for gaming and general use.

If it's not too much to ask,
would it be better to get a headset with multiple drivers in each headphone like a tiamat 7.1 for gaming or am I better off just getting a good headset and using razer surround for the virtual surround?
>>
>>57545536
2 good drivers > dozens of shitty little drivers.
If the source / sound engine of your game is shitty, chances are virtual surround sound isn't magically going to make it any better.

Depending on what you're looking for out of gaming headphones, you could get something open backed with a wide soundstage and detailed mids if you're looking for "surround sound."
Or you might just want closed back with bass that blows out everything else like most gamer headsets.

Also, dedicated microphone + headphones >>>>> headset.
>>

>>57545536

Buy a good set of headphones, two drivers is all you need for good positional audio if you're using the right cans and the sound will beat any shitty 7.1 set you can find for the same price by far.

Virtual surround will work well if your headphones are up to the task.

Get a mic that attaches to the headphones like an Antlion ModMic, there are a couple of cheaper ones too. You'll have a complete headset that sounds better than any gaming headset you can buy.

I've got Fostex T50RP MK3 + Antlion ModMic 4.0. Absolutely love it.

There is a difference, it's just so well past the point of diminishing returns that you start spending exponentially more for exponentially less improvement.
>>
>>57545847
>Schiit Magni 2+ Schiit Modi 2.
Correct me if I´m wrong but is 100usd for each piece, right?
Dac 100 + Amp 100 or I´m just retarded
>>
>>57545942
What setup is the best before diminishing returns kick in? HE400i + schiit stack?
>>
>>57545892

Not necessarily, even though many will tell you it is.

The truth is there are certainly diminishing returns as you go up the chain, better transducers will allow you to take advantage of better amplifiers. It also depends on your listening habits, source audio, your ears, etc etc etc.

An ODAC/O2 or Magni/Modi might be the last DAC / AMP you'll ever need, and anything better wouldn't produce meaningful improvements.

On the other hand you might really, really enjoy what some higher end DACs and amps have to offer. General rule of thumb, the transducers have the largest impact on sound and sound quality, the amp second, the DAC last. Of course, all this depends on your source audio, but that should be obvious.

Get the odac/o2 or magni/modi, use it for a while, and if you're interested in possibly upgrading see if you can try out someone elses gear before pulling the trigger.
>>
>>57545956
Diminishing of best value vs quality is probably around $150 for good headphones, which /g/ considers entry level.
A really solid setup that doesn't just wreck the wallet is around $400-600 for a full setup (cans + amp + DAC).
HE400i + Schiit stack running $600 is definitely in that upper bound, but it's an incredible setup that still doesn't cost several grand.
>>
quick question form someone who has the superlux hd6668b: Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 250 ohms or Audio Technica ath-m50x?
>>
>>57545955

That's correct. $200 for the pair, which is a little less than an O2+ODAC from JDS or Mayflower.

>>57545956

Diminishing returns start from the first dollar, man. That said, most people could probably be happy with a pair of HD6x0 / HE400 / similar and a Schiit stack.

I would say the diminishing returns become really, really pronounced above about $1000 for headphones, and $1000 for amp / dac pair. That is, of course, my opinion. I wouldn't say I have the most discerning ears in the world, so who knows.
>>
>>57546066
If I'm sitting with a HD600 and Schiit Stack and want to upgrade to something to where it'll be an appreciable difference, what should I be looking at? Same sound signature
>>
>>57546090
O2+ODAC
>>
>>57542712
AKG K612. A lot of songs don't get loud enough on max and some sound feint even when they are loud, but I guess it's not worth £200. Do you know if an E10K would drive them better? I got the impression it's basically the same.
>>
>>57546104

O2+ODAC is on par with a Schiit stack, it has literally nothing to offer over it.

>>57546090

I would say a Jotunheim + LCD-2 would be a safe bet.

Jotunheim is getting rave reviews from everyone that touches it as a clean neutral amp that outclasses other amps far more expensive than it. You can get it with a DAC built in that's on par with the Modi and fully balanced, making a great single unit. I listened to one at a meet and have to agree.

Honestly your HD600, if you really like the sound signature, are hard to improve on without getting into some flagship models. LCD-2 I've read are fairly similar with maybe slightly softer highs. HD800 would also be worth looking at. Really depends on what your listening habits are and what you want to get out of your cans.

For reference, this is my setup. >>57542881

I jumped the gun a little bit on buying a higher end amp, but I needed something to drive my power hungry Fostex and since I'm already planning on buying a pair of LCD-2 I figured I would go straight to my "end game" and skip right over the O2+ODAC / Magni+Modi.

No regrets, I love it.
>>
>>57546275
That was actually the setup I was looking at exactly. The other option I was considering was Stax, any thoughts? My only worry with the LCD2 was the weight.
>>
what's the minimum entry level for headphones that work well with virtual surround? Be it price or otherwise
>>
>>57546242

Oh shit, you should have said so to begin with. If that's the problem you're having you would absolutely benefit from moving up to a Schiit stack or O2+ODAC.

SMSL M3 puts out 85mW into a 64 ohm load with 0.1% distortion.
Magni 2 puts out a full 1000mW into a 50 ohm load with <0.003% distortion.
O2 also puts out more, cleaner power than the M3.

Either one will solve your problem without a doubt.
>>
>>57546307

I don't have any personal experience with any Stax products, nor have I done much reading on electrostats in general. Some people are absolutely bonkers for them, but you need a special amplifier for them that only works for electrostats.

The LCD-2 are definitely a little on the large / heavy side. The weight didn't bother me when I tried them out, but I only had them on for maybe 5-10 minutes so I can't say if long sessions would be a problem.

If you're worried about surround sound, then what you want in headphones is something with a good soundstage.
Likely meaning open backed.
Cheapest okay-ish ones I can think of are Samson SR850 at $42, or AKG K240 at $60.

I'm looking into doing a full audio re-haul. When I'm sitting at my desk I generally listen to my headphones but occasionally I have guests over and want to play music. >>57547453
Which is why I like replacing the cable instead of buying new ones. I just bout a 15 dollar pair last week and it got caught onto my door knob and they're gone. I don't usually do that but it happens.

Instead of paying another 15 for a whole new pair I just get a ew cable or whatever for 10 dollars and have a good quality pair as opposed to some bs pair that I just take because train rides are boring.
>>

I'm realllly enjoying my Lyr 2, and I'm still considering ordering a Jotunheim to side by side demo for the 15 day return period.

I was really impressed with the Jot when I heard it, but I only got to listen to it for like 5-10 minutes in a public setting so who knows.

That said, everything I've read about the Lyr 2 is that it's better in every way than the 1. It would be really hard to part with it.

If it's your first decent amp/dac the go for solidstate.

You see, tubes are physical beings, meaning that every one of them has different sound presentation depending on all kind of things from headphones to its current temperature. You get tubes when you have bunch of good solidstates and 5-6 pairs of headphones and you want to hear something new from each one of these headphones. Also, you will on average pay more for a decent tube if you want to really hear something different.

Oh, thank you for the information. Do you know about SMSL M6 in comparison? Asking as it is almost £100 less.

He's wearing them on the wrong side.

I have to make a gift for a friend. As far as I know my friend had only shitty headphones in the past, so it really won't make a difference what sound signature the headphones have, but I think the more neutral the better.

The needs are:

>€150 budget
>no need for amplification
>open circumaural
>highest comfort possible
>best build quality possible

I was thinking about the DT 990 Pro, but they have a 250 Ohm impedence, so it may be too high to be driven by a computer or even a smartphone: is there any alternative?
>>
>>57555265
DT990 is not that neutral, it has a distinct V-shape. Someone who has never owned a nice pair of headphones would probably be impressed. DT880 is more neutral and also more expensive. The 32 Ohm version might fit the budget in some counties. The most neutral headphone for the price would be HD 558. It fits all the criteria here but has worse build than DT-series.

Sennheiser HD 558/598 are ez as fuck to drive, and comfy. Build quality is about average. Better than older Senns but still not quite on par with Beyers

AKG K612 might also be an option. A bit easier to drive than those Beyers.

Neither of those have death tier highs like 990's do
880's are more neutral than 990's too, but they're only semi-open
>>
>>57555704
K612 is about the hardest moving coil transducer headphone load to drive still in production. It's insensitive and quite power hungry.

DT880 is basically open. The semi-open category is rather pointless and does not offer any meaningful isolation.
>>
>>57555704
To be fair the DT880 i only semi-open in the sense that it's less open than the DT880, but it's still pretty open overall.
>>
>>57555746
*Than the DT990.

Shit, you're right. Dunno what I was going on about. Sorry.

Haven't had first hand experience with 880's. How significant is the difference in open-ness compared to 990's?

Insignificant. They both feel like open headphones with barely no isolation. I would post headroom isolation plots to prove but that site is still under "maintenance".

Thank you very much.

DT 880 is too out of budget, even the 32 Ohm version. So I gave a look to the Sennheisers and I found the HD598, the HD558, but also the HD559. They're all almost the same price. I don't really like their plastiky look, but if there's nothing else that fits the bill I'll have to choose one of these. What's the difference between these three models?

I wanted to animepost but apparently some anon made a new thread already while providing no link. New thread here:

Sound wise the HD 598 and HD 558 are near identical to the point you don't really have to think about it. Different measurements tell a slightly different story about the sound. On some sites the HD 598 shows a clear 4 KHz bump whereas on others the bump is gone and even replaced with a tiny notch in response before that. They use the same driver and have a very similar design all around with tiny differences in the baffle and what's directly behind the driver.

HD 598 has that Volvo interior look and a pleather headband which might be nicer when compared to the HD 558's velour one. Your call really.

HD 559 is a brand new model and while I doubt it sounds much different, it hasn't been measured yet. HD 5xx-series has been very similar sound wise and I wouldn't expect a huge difference in sound for better or worse. The closed back models might prove interesting.
