Fuck, I keep responding to myself.
This isn't the only problem or even most visible problem with modern linux. If you've ever had to configure the kernel, you'll know that a shitton of normally completely unrelated stuff are unmarked, even often unknown, prereqs for other common modules. For instance, OTG support is very often needed for all USB support even though that makes no sense. I'd love to be able to move to something that's not linux, but everywhere I look it's either linux, closed-source+botnet or 20 years deprecated.

You deserve what you get. I suspend and resume my laptop often times and it never hangs.
>>
>>57479374
I mean, it's kinda subjective. I don't care about hibernation, so it isn't a showstopper for me. Nor have I had to compile the kernel for the last 5 years, nowadays distros do a good job at shipping something that works for everyone out of the box.

Besides, there's always the open-source BSDs, which are usually fairly good as long as there are drivers for your hardware. One of my laptops runs FreeBSD and it works pretty well.
>>

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm actually using terminus too and work with Japanese files in the terminal a lot.

I don't know if things show up a bit differently depending no which terminal you use or not (I'm using urxvt) but I've found that oddly enough the best looking option seems to be IPAMonaPGothic
That's right, the proportional one, not IPAMonaGothic, which seems to have ugly character spacing when I try to combine it with terminus for some reason.
>>
>>57480339
Thanks. Just found WenQuanYi Bitmap Song for chinese, will try IPAMonaPGothic.

>>
>>57480361
Yeah honestly Chinese seems to have a nicer selection of bitmap fonts. But you know there are a lot of kanji that show up differently depending on whether your font is Japanese or Chinese right?
They use the same unicode codepoints but are different characters, so you should try to stick with actual Japanese fonts
>>
>>57480339
This looks like bad hinting. Do you use infinality patches? If so, you should enable the unhint-cjk patch.
>>
>>57480382
Well the bottom image should be exactly as the font was made as its just bitmaps. The top image is what happens when it tries to embolden the bitmaps because no actual bold version of the font exists.

I'll try your suggestion though and see how it looks.

>>

>>
>>57480251
wqy bitmap is good for Japanese, but it doesn't display half width characters like ハ, it's also quite large. If you use urxvt set lineSpace higher. But all round I like it, even English written in it looks good.

mplus also has some good fonts.
>>
Hey /fglt/, I just got a Dell Inspiron 13 5368 and I'm trying to install the non-free version of Debian on it. For some reason, when I get to the "detect network hardware" step, it presents an error saying "No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list". Then there's a long list of drivers. If I just try to continue, it won't let me configure the network and it says I need to load a driver.

My laptop has an Intel wireless card, and I've selected every item on the list but it still doesn't work. I've searched for a solution on Google but can't find anything, the Inspiron 13 5000-series isn't even on the Debian or Arch wiki. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am using the non-free installer, and my laptop doesn't have an ethernet port. Is there anything else I can do, or should I just give up and install Ubuntu? I really like using apt.
>>

you can.always find out which wifi chip it is, find out what driver it needs manually and then copy the installer (deb) for it on a live install instead of a netinstall then sudo dpkg -i installer.drb

You do not need to read the language to see what it is using to take the picture. It is a script anyway.

It could be a number of things, could be your compositor settings, or chromium itself, or something else. What DE are you using? Maybe also check the arch wiki and see if it has a listing for your graphics card to see if there is anything special you need to do.

There are exceptions to any distro if your hardware requires any special steps.

I have a simple doubt.
I'll get a old notebook and try to put it to use with some distro. I'm a newbie with Linux, only used Ubuntu Gnome and other Debian variant, and this time I decided to use something different and fast and come across with Solus, but I don't know what to expect from a Arc variant. I can see that it's faster and use less memory, but what about instalation packages? I was considering either Solus or Apricity Gnome, but really, what are the pitfalls I may encounter with Solus when I wanted to install some program? They have limited compatibility/availability?

non-mainstream distros are starved in packages

You can expect "most" existing software to be in the repositories of distributions like Ubuntu (because it's popular) and Arch (because AUR). To a lesser extent Debian and openSUSE. Other distros are either failure from popularity viewpoint and therefore do not have a large community of maintainers willing to keep up with every piece of software of by desing. Fedora doesn't have a lot of packages because some violate their rules regarding inclusion of patented software. Other like rhel/centos have tiny repositories because they are very purpose-specific distros

That would be my guess, but I have no clue, the last time i tried solus it was still in beta.

But yeah, with common package managers like apt and yum/dnf there are shitload of sites dedicated to archieving .deb and .rpm packages for even the most obscure software in case you can't be assed to compile it.
You don't get that with something as recent as solus
>>
>>57484582
That's true, but it's worth noting that sticking to a few of the most popular packages is enough for your average user, considering they usually don't need a lot. Me, I have about 20 top-level packages, and only a single one of those is missing from alpine linux and its tiny repo (and there's a direct replacement available). Not everyone needs 50k+ packages.

There's a difference with the windows keyboard functionally I am used to, where if you press the keys 't, you will print 't. Now, I have to press a space after the ' because it's a dead key.
I still need to be able to type é á etc but do not want to have to do the extra space bar for when I do not need it.
Also, I can not seem to do ç, I get ć instead.

My mouse and my keyboard get laggy after some time of not doing anything with them (not typing or not moving the mouse). The pointer moves very sluggishly and it's hard to click on things, the keyboard just doesn't register all the keys I press and is sluggish too. If I keep moving the pointer every few seconds the problem doesn't appear and it can stay that way for hours, when it starts acting a reboot fixes it, until it happens again. The keyboard acts the same in TTY as well so I guess it must be a kernel problem (since I also am unable to wake up the computer after suspending it to RAM). I'm using kubuntu 16.04 with 4.4.0-47-generic, I installed it a while ago but it only started showing this behavior since the 9th. I tried this command but it didn't work: sudo sh -c 'echo N > /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll'

WTF do I do now? Will I have to reinstall it?

genkernel --lvm --luks --busybox --no-zfs --install initramfs

That worked for me. If you aren't running an lvm you can just drop that part.
Also add this to your /etc/default/grub. You can check the UUID in /dev/disk/by-uuid
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="crypt_root=UUID="

Arch is made for simplicity, not for user-freeedom. The simplicity implies shipping as much hardware support as possible, not caring about freedoms, bloat or whatever.

The fact that the AUR provides linux-libre doesn't mean that it will work on your install, with your hardware and with related programs which expect the default configuration.

GNU'd just like to interGNU for a GNUment. What you’re GNUing to as GNU, is in fact, GNU/GNU, or as GNU's recently taken to GNUing it, GNU plus GNU. GNU is not an GNU GNUstem unto itGNU, but rather another GNUree GNU of a fully GNUing GNU GNUstem made GNUful by the GNU GNUlibs, GNU GNUtilties and vital GNU GNUponents GNUing a full GNU OS as GNUed by GNU. Many GNU GNUers run a GNUified GNUrsion of the GNU GNUstem every GNU, without GNUing it. Through a GNUuliar turn of GNU, the GNUrsion of GNU which is GNUly used today is often called “GNU”, and many of its GNUers are not GNU that it is GNUically the GNU GNUstem, GNUed by the GNU ProjGNU. There really is a GNU, and these GNUple are GNUing it, but it is GNU a GNU of the GNUstem they use. GNU is the GNU: the GNU in the GNUstem that GNUs the GNU’s GNU to the other GNU that you GNU. The GNU is a GNUtial GNU of an GNU GNUstem, but GNUless by itGNU; GNU can only GNUtion in the GNUtext of a GNUplete GNU GNUstem. GNU is GNUmally used in combiGNUtion with the GNU GNU GNUstem: the whole GNUstem is GNUsically GNU with GNU added, or GNU/GNU. All the so-called “GNU” distribGNUtions are really distribGNUtions of GNU/GNU.

It doesn't have the dependency versions it needs. It is asking for older or newer versions than you have available in your repository. What does dpkg say when you try it?
"Nothing worked" doesn't help us know what the issue is so please post meaningful information if you expect help, such as full errors or command outputs.
>>
>>57487758
no. those flags only indicate what support or framework to compile in & use for the programs. if XFCE for example wants a gnome program, it will still use it.

>a community built on lies
It's basically the open source community which killed the freedom thing.
GNU/Linux community splits into two parts: People who enjoy it because the freedom and people who enjoy it as development benefit.
Linus Torvalds doesn't care much about freedom, so it's not a surprise that he doesn't sue himself/the Linux Foundation for shipping ucode.
That said, it seems a bit two-faced, or whatever:
>"„I refuse to even consider tying my hands over some binary-only module. I want people to know that when they use binary-only modules, it's THEIR problem.“"

gnome-base/*

and so on in package.mask. If you need a package later you can just unmask it.

It looks like you will need one of these packages - https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=qtdeclarative5&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all

Not sure why it is having problems, maybe the deb file is made for ubuntu and the programs it needs are named differently in that. Usually it's not that difficult.

it's the idea behind the "tainted kernel" concept so many people cry about. it basically just means that you are free to use whatever non-free parts you want, as long as you don't expect help if something fails.

There are barely any and the list grows shorter every year. We'll be stuck with gentoo, funtoo and guixSD in no time, if that. GuixSD is basically unusable, gentoo is GOAT but has some really, REALLY shit devs, and funtoo has nodevs.

You can use s6+runit or sysvinit+openrc. among other options, to replace systemd, however this might require using a different distro than whatever you're using because a lot of distro build their packages with hard-requirements on systemd. I think trisquel uses sytemd now (if not, soon probably), so it wouldn't be a very good distro to be systemd free. However, it's not a bad distro outside from that, though I'd honestly, unironically suggest gentoo since it's the only distro that had remained stable for 5 years for me and it tends to 'just werk' past install.
>>
>>57488361
i had the same the first time i tried installing gentoo. turned out i forgot to compile a kernel
>>
>>57487288
The problem is that
1- Systemd is so huge it's impossible to audit it completely
2- the head dev (lennart poettering) is known for producing garbage software (see: pulseaudio, which significantly increases sound latency, notably reduces sound accuracy, and until recently didn't even work half the time. Not convinced? Google for various distro's systemd-related bugs in their bugtrackes. You'll be nothing short of amazed I guarantee you, most of the serious bugs are outright ridiculous and some are even CLOSED_WONTFIX).
The without-systemd website has a lot of argument, but I don't think it correctly does justice to the breath of the issue.
