Alright /g/, I want to get a little portable computer with long battery life that I can take around with me to shoot the shit with instead of lugging around my larger 15.6" powerhouse.
I've settled on the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series. I'm torn bewteen 2 models, though. The N3170 or the M3-7Y30. The hard part is that the N3170 model can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM, and the M3 is stuck at 4GB. For either, I'd replace the hard drive with an ssd.
So, chime in. Which is better?

isn't the m3 going to be a wee bit faster? Similar clockspeeds and same amount of threads but m3 is newer. Or at the very least negligible and use less power? I can't imagine what you'd be doing with either processor that 4gb of ram would be the bottleneck.

It's newer and it'll use a wee bit less power, that's for sure. But it's also a dual core and not a quad core.

dual core with hyper threading and it also has a better gpu

Hmm higher cache too...
The N3710 is also $350 compared to $450 for the M3.

yup.
The 4 GB limit is the only downside but with applications that will utilize more than 4gb of ram, either processor is going to be a bottleneck.
The pentium might be able to maintain boost for longer though. May. It all depends on cooling. If they are the exact same model PC though, I'd go with the m3. You should get better battery since most of the time the cpu will be idling anyway.

Yeah they're the exact same thing other than the RAM is upgradable on the Pentium version.
