Never mind. I figured it out. It seems that they installed right after all. All the programs are running, but I need to figure out how to get them running from simple commands on the command line.

Can anyone help me with aliases? Do I just copy the path to the program file and use that to make the command in bash.rc?

thanks I'll look into it

Also I was looking at other desktop enviroments last night. Some people were saying it's fine to check out others. Then some were saying don't do it, because installing some packages in say GNOME and then running them in KDe causes things to break and not work right. is it fine to test out different DEs as long as i don't install any new packages while doing so? if I do decide to swap DEs would it be best to first uninstall all my packages from the old one and reinstall them to be sure?

KDE plasma looks really nice but I don't really know what packages to install from synaptic to get it going.
>>
>>57467646
You can install and use what ever you want from any de/wm,being that you must also satisfy the deps to use that program in another wm/de,which leads to bloat.

start with the base group for kde and work from there.

All right bros... answer me this one. When I use one of the GUI file managers (GNOME, Xfce etc), why the fuck does it choke when I'm copying files to a USB drive?

See the attached pic... I was copying some files and it fucking choked at 99% for like 20 seconds.

I know what you're thinking.. it must be the drive, right?

WRONG!

If I copy it with cp or copy it with my mac laptop, it doesn't happen. It only happens with GUI file managers for Linux.

Why? WTF is going on? I've tried all kinds of things and it always chokes/stutters.

I want to learn Arch Linux.
My question is: are there any pdf guides out there?
I already tried to find one, but I failed.

I know you'll say that I should use the Arch wiki, but I need a single pdf for the learning.

Also I might use an Arch installer, so I don't necessarily need to understand the installing process - I only want to handle an already installed Arch (the basics, at least).

Please help me out with some links, or post the guides themselves, if you can!

You can just use arch-anywhere. It's the same as installing Arch, only you don't have to type in everything, and you can't forget to add yourself to the sudo wheel, or set a hostname.
Also comes with a repo with nice stuff like easy mirror switching while abroad. But those are unsigned packages, so there's that.

>i want to learn arch

There is no "learning Arch". You can learn how to use its package manager. To get the basics down, a normal person needs 30 seconds. Installing Arch might be the only thing one could consider "learning Arch", but you appear to be a retard who wants to skip that step (which makes up a big part why someone would use Arch).
Any software that you use on Arch can be used and "learned" on other distributions.

My mouse and my keyboard get laggy after a minute or so of not doing anything with them (not typing or not moving the mouse). The pointer moves very sluggishly and it's hard to click on things, the keyboard just doesn't register all the keys I press and is sluggish too. If I keep moving the pointer constantly the problem doesn't appear and it can stay that way for hours, when it starts acting a reboot fixes it, until I stop constantly inputting stuff with the keyboard/mouse. This happens in TTY as well so I guess it must be a kernel problem (since I also am unable to wake up the computer after suspending it to RAM). I'm using kubuntu 16.04 with 4.4.0-47-generic, I installed it a while ago but it only started showing this behavior a couple of days ago. WTF do I do now? Will I have to reinstall it?

I put it into textmode after that and it still would not boot. Every resource I've looked that tells me that the issue is with loading drivers but the RAM is also known to be somewhat faulty (just using it until I get new RAM).

this site is unbiased enough to provide you a basic insight on te differences.

Take the "clang is much much faster" with a grain of salt, it's been proven that it entirely depends on the workload, sometimes clang is miles ahead of gcc, the other time gcc stomps clang in performance.

remember that clang is still nowhere near being able to compile a linux kernel due to the extensive use of gcc-specific extensions that are not supported yet.

I'm fairly sure that counts as "non-standard".

Just because NTFS is a standard filesystem of choice of Windows-based operating system doesn't make it "standard" on linux despite the fact that you can actually install GNU/Linux on a NTFS partition

So I just ran
tcpdump -i ens3 -s 65535 out.pcap

And it would be nice if it came with matching cd rom drive (WITH cds). OH! and it CANNOT have any viruses, or be made out of plastic. It has to be made of aluminium, or something like that. Even if it was a typo you're still an idiot because window decorations don't have to take up almost any screen space at all, nor does adding a few extra lines take up any noticeable extra memory.

Why are you taking it so personally anyway? The fact that you got so offended suggests you're trying to defend your "minimalist look" too much, meaning you probably care about how your desktop looks more than I do.

Funtoo and Gentoo are pretty much interchangeable, experience from one will transition to the other.

You'll definitely learn a shitton about Linux by just performing a Gentoo installation. Especially if you try to understand why the guide is telling you to do things instead of just doing them.

As for choosing an actual Linux distro you like, I'll just give you my own personal opinion on this, although others disagree.
I always say to first decide which package manager you want. Then pick a distro you like which uses it. I use Gentoo because I liked portage.

The time it takes to start an instance of bash is so insignificant (tens of milliseconds) that it's incredibly trivial to not use bash -c. Also, sometimes a system upgrade can take so long that I have to re-type my password for the next execution of sudo. With my method I only have to type my password once for sure.

Gentoo is actually your best bet. They don't use systemd by default and because of this everything is programmed around the idea that systemd is probably not being used.
The reason why you can't do this on arch is because the whole distro is set up on the assumption that you are using systemd. This means that programs that can use systemd are compiled under the assumption that they will use systemd.

Install gentoo.

No seriously. Install gentoo. You will still have systemd-udevd in the default because that's how udev works, but just replace it with mdev or eudev to get rid of that name entirely.

What are some good alternatives to:
>Adobe Premier Pro
>Adobe After Effects
>Photoshop / Lightroom
>Visual Studio

I did a fresh install a couple months ago and eudev was default. udev only gets installed now if you specify it as a use flag.

How do I get my printer working under Linux? I have an HP OfficeJet laser printer and it works fine under Win10 and works fine with Mac notebook. But when I use Linux, it shows the box it found it and I can see it from LibreOffice but when I print, there's fucking nothing.

How do I debug it? What's wrong?

I'm using Ubuntu...
