not sure whether it's a mobo or gpu (probably mobo) issue but whenever i run a game my screen goes black and my video input is lost

still can hear sound but everything else is unresponsive

i may have updated my bios using msi live update (which is so fucking dumb now that i've realised it)

how do i solve this?
>>
>>57449413
You need to do some troubleshooting. Try a different GPU/PSU/Monitor/OS. If the problem persists it's the mobo and you should replace it.
>>
If I were to take my laptop with me about 1/50 of the times I get out of the house and consistently did image/video editing + develop, would it better to have a Thinkpad (which would need a GPU and maybe SSD and docking station) or would I be better off with a desktop PC? Both is not an option.

I was talking with one of my friend about recovering an old bloated with shit laptop of one of our normie friends, so I just said format it and reinstall the OS but he said that formatting wasn't enough because the viruses may revive themselves somehow (???) since the data is still recoverable after a simple formatting. Is that right?
>>
Is it normal to get mouse and keyboard lag after some time has passed after booting? I'm using noobuntu btw.
>>
>>57449536
Technically the data is still on the drive after a quick format but you would have to intentionally recover the files, the malware isn't going to resurrect itself (unless you're lucky enough to be targeted by a 3 letter agency firmware virus in which case you're fucked either way)

My computer recently started going into a boot loop. It would reboot every time I got to a UEFI dual boot screen. Reseated all the parts, reset the Cmos and replaced the PSU until I can RMA my old one and it was working for a little bit until it started doing it again. Any ideas?

looks like file-roller doesn't have an option to list archive contents
perhaps an alternative is to extract it to a temporary hidden folder, then move it based on how many things are in it

like say;
tempfolder=$(mktemp -d .extractXXXXXX)
<extract to "$tempfolder" here>
if [ $(du "$tempfolder" | wc -l) == 1 ]; then
# there's only one thing in the extract folder
shopt -s dotglob # without this, it won't move a single hidden file/folder
mv "$tempfolder/*" $destination # change destination to suit
rmdir "$tempfolder" # remember to clean up when you're done
else
# there's multiple things in the extract folder
mv "$tempfolder" "$newfolder" # instead of making a new folder and moving the things over, just rename the temp folder for the same result
fi

untested, but should give you a headstart

For tar files:
tar -tf filename.tar | wc -l

For formats that aren't handled by tar, figure it out, then test for file type and use the correct command based on that. Do you know what a man page is?

Also keep in mind this is potentially dangerous, especially with tar files. Be sure you know what you're extracting.

If you want to compile something, google "gcc getting started".

If you want to learn how compilers actually work, hope you have some free time. Start with a textbook on the theory of compiler design, then look at the docs bundled with the gcc source: https://gcc.gnu.org/git/?p=gcc.git;a=tree;f=gcc/doc

Reposting from last thread:

I have a problem with my router. I have a Netgear WNR-2000 running DD-WRT.

After a while of using the internet, a wirelessly connected device is suddenly unable to resolve any hostnames - lan and wan are both affected.
The affected device says it is connected, but is unable to resolve any hostnames, cannot ping anything locally or on the internet. If the affected device disconnects and reconnects, all is well for a while.
This happens on many different hardware/OS combinations - Windows 8/10, Android, BlackBerry OS, Xbox One, and Linux Mint 17 - all are fully up-to-date.

The router is using WPA2-AES, MAC filtering, and QoS controls. Are there too many services running for the router to handle? I live in a rural area - only 2 other networks are in range and then just barely, so I doubt its interference. Wired devices are unaffected and work flawlessly.

If you don't know of a way to fix it or my router is toast, can you recommend a new router? This is what I require:
802.11n minimum, ac is nice but not necessary.
>=4 100Mbps lan ports, gigabit is nice, but not necessary
Able to resolve local machine names - ie 'ssh foo@mediaserver' rather than 'ssh [email protected]'
QoS controls - I should be able to prioritize traffic based on protocol.
Able to disable WPS
>>
>>57449869
fyi those are from different people
>>57449831
would require writing one for several different tools to handle the various formats, and ultimately isn't as efficient, as you'd be reading the file once to list files, then again to extract
>>
>>57449854
You can have multiple des installed and choose which one you want at login.
Install it and try it. If you don't like it remove it
>>

yeah I know. I was slowly processing everything but wanted to answer fast...
I did bug when thinking "why would he give me an answer that is format specific after an answer that works for all formats?"
especially when the issue was precisely the different formats; if everything was zip it would have been straightforward.

thanks for bestowing your knowledge. This is a clever solution.

Taking an introductory course in IT and we just started with Boolean algebra and logic gates. I understand how they work but I'm not quite sure how to write it out.
For example, I have a question that goes like this:Evaluate the boolean expressions: a) 10<10 V 10>10
Now this should come out as false, right? What I don't know is how I'm supposed to write this down.

Ok, still messing about with boolean algebra and there is a bonus task:

(distance > 0 & time > 0) V (distance > 0 & time < 100)

Apparently I can use this formula for solving this:
a & (b V c) = (a & b) V (a & c)
a V (b & c) = (a V b) & (a V c)

I bought electronic access to a textbook this semester, but It only allows you to read it from a web browser. Yesterday I wrote a python script to download all 458 pages as .jpgs at 5000x5882 (bigger is better, right?) to combine into a PDF. Now that I have them however, acrobat won't run OCR because the pages "contain renderable text". Any operations on the file take a while anyways because together the images are ~1.2 gb. Tech support wants me to print it to file as another PDF before using OCR, which works, but destroys the resolution. How can I format these images into a legible PDF with searchable text and reasonable filesize? What settings should I be aiming for?

I posting this in /spg/ but I am desperate so I am asking here too.

QUESTION:

Phone: Galaxy S5

So it seems like my gyroscope stopped working. I cant tilt my phone sideways and have windows change orientation, nor do any games with Gyro controls work.

I have tried the following things:

>Removing the Battery (Both while on and off)
>Factory Reset
>Dialing *#0*# (Which does not bring up the system menu like it used to)

Anyone have any more ideas? I am kinda pissed because I wanted to keep the phone for a year or two yet but this sucks

Is that a bad sign for me or him?
My initial thoughts are that someone/something just collected a list of contacts from his account and used a random name on the list for a fake address to make him think I sent him something and make him click on it.

But I'm also concerned that someone/something malicious has access to information on me, because why would my name of all names be the one chosen from that contact list?

What do you think is going on here /g/?

Difference in design principle.

When you use a laptop, you want portablity. So decent laptop sound cards come with builtin amp. Meanwhile if you're using desktop, then it might or might not have amp built in. Desktop is stationary machine so its meant to utilize the best aftermarket stuff, that includes AVR.

Either that or you're using the wrong port. Use the proper headphone port from the mobo, otherwise, it wont be receive the proper power rating.

Or a combination of both.

AMD usually runs hot so dont worry about it, specially with the stock cooler the average temperatures should be +-70°C under load, even with new paste.

I'm a fucking idiot and pretty stumped so I'd appreciate some input.

My XFX 390X has been running at extremely fucking hot idle temps recently - upwards of 60-65 degrees celsius- and I'm looking to remedy that, optimally through an aftermarket cooler. I have confirmed that it is not a sensor error, the card is just running extremely hot and throttles during any session upwards of an hour. The Arctic Accelero Hybrid 3 seems to be exactly what I'm looking for to fix it, but my local store only has the 290X version in their inventory. Because of very convoluted reasons ordering online is not an option.

So here I am, thinking that the 390X is basically just a rebranded 290X, no? So my question following that line of thought is; will the Hybrid 3 also fit my card or are there actual architectural differences between the 390X board and the 290X board that will prevent using the cooler on the former?

Thanks in advance boys

What is the best program for mounting .ISO's in windows 7?
Daemon-tools light is apparently infested with ads now.

It's fucking not. You brain has more neural activities when you sleep than when you are awake. It literally means you work harder while sleeping.

Only your consciousness isn't operative.

So thinking of getting my first tattoo (a funny one) on the inside of my forearm it will read
"
vzcylvat ebg pnag or oehgrsbeprq
zgyzhs rhmg z hvxfiv xrksvi
"
it translates into
"
implying rot cant be bruteforced
atbash isnt a secure cipher
"
obviously each is done in the correct encryption algorithm

is this a good tattoo idea?
>>
>>57454515
Nope, it's completely retarded and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Think about getting this for my Engineering courses, and programs (such as AutoCAD, ANSYS & Solidworks) and to program.

Any thoughts on that? Just wanted to get second opinions on it. It's on sale for 749.99$

Also whats a recommend language to learn for Mechanical Engineers?

I tried to build my first computer and I got everything up and running, the fans on the CPU and Video Card are a go, LEDs on the motherboard are on, and I can feel my hard drive whirring. BUT I can't get anything to show up on my display. I already asked /wsr/ and I'm a little ashamed that I fucked up, you guys make this seem so easy.

I need a way to set up a kareoke system for a mother who is tech illiterate (but can use an android device).

I have an av reciever that doesn't have bluetooth and doesn't have microphone jacks. What do i need to have both the track's sound and the microphone's sound to come through the reciever? I need something i can set up and forget and something for people with minimal knowledge of these things.

It will make doujin/manga/anime translations much better via machine translation.

Google is already working on it, it maybe put into implementation withing coming months/years. Their paper suggests its already better than their current web translate, so its only a matter of time.
