I've owned an Elitebook, a T420, an X220, a T450s and I can confirm the best laptops for most use cases are Macbooks.

Depending on what you need they can be pretty good. Old ones are perfect if you need a cheap laptop that will last a while. Newer ones can be a good idea if durability is more important than a good screen. If you want linux on your laptop they are also a good idea. I have a 11e yoga, core m variant. Great thing, slim for a thinkpad, durable, decent keyboard, display folds back for tablet like use, has a wacom digitizer and runs linux.

The IBM Thinkpads were very good but are now obsolescent.

The specs are inferior to most other quality laptops and the production values have declined markedly.

There's nothing special about them. Other than their keyboards. Durability meme was in the 90s when IBM still made them, but even then the later IBM models were just regular. Everything was made better a while back, I have an old Median Microstar laptop which is solid as fuck still.

Modern day ThinkPads aren't any more durable than any other laptop. They're not made with low tolerances, the rollcage shit is inferior to a full metal exoskeleton (MacBooks used to have magnesium rollcages before they went to unibody). They're kinda upgradable, which is alright. Upgradable laptops are a thing of the past though. You don't need to upgrade your RAM several times, maximum 3 times in the lifetime of the machine, it makes no sense to make design compromises for such a small case when you can just not be cheap and buy what you think you'll need for the future.

ThinkPads have been employed in large numbers by businesses and so when they're recycled they can be picked up for cheap, that's the real reason why this board likes them, they're abundant in supply and replacements and cheap.

They just have really good keyboards, they're built well, and they usually have solid Linux support. That's it. For a lot of people, including me, that was enough.

An alternative is the Latitude E4300 that can be bought for <$100 and is a decent machine, backlit keyboard/trackpoint, it's 13.3" unlike the Thinkpads. Not very powerful but fine for shitposting

I've used a W541 and it was fucking horrendous and was RMAd and replaced with a P70 which is an overpriced pile of shit.
