Okay newfags 99% of your mechanical keyboards are a meme. Cherry switches (all colors) are for cheap faggots who wouldn't know a good switch if it came up and slapped the tranny they call a gf. Buckling Springs and Topre are the only good switches. Why aren't you using a glorious Model M /g/ ? Pic related a glorious Model M keyboard
>>
>>57417206
They are incredible switches, IBM sure thought so too when they used them on some of their 3270 boards.

Fixed your typo for you.

Also capacitive buckling springs > hammer over membrane buckling springs
>>
>>57417458
Agreed, I tried some blue alps and they felt pretty damn awesome.

Also agree, capacitive springs do feel better however getting Model F's with decent layouts isn't really possible without modifications of some sort. My F107 is the closest thing to a normal 103 key layout however it's missing some function keys due to the F keys being on the side. My model F 84 key at is the next closest thing to standard however that too had to be modified to get rid of the stupidly large enter key and 1u backspace. They would be perfect if the layouts weren't so shit. Also, non removable cables suck.

My first MKB arrived yestarday. Still waiting on dampeners and keycaps. Typeing is infinitely satisfying. It's got blue zorros. I don't care much for the backlight, though.

there really is no such thing as babbys first mechanical keyboard.

That being said you could go to a box store or buy a switch tester and see what kind of switches you like.

$150 and under is usually what mid range mechanical keyboards sell for, so anything from Ducky or Leopold will be fine.

If you have the desk space and want something unique then maybe consider buckling springs from Unicomp
>>

Soarer's converter has firmware for Wyse boards like that, assuming it's a 440017.

If you're looking at anything over $120, you should probably go for a unicomp spacesaver, which will be about $85 if you live in the USA.

Basically, start by remembering that you can get a brand new board for $85, that has only marginally lower build quality than the original model Ms. Then ask yourself how much more you're willing to pay to have a heavier base (and no menu keys/USB support).

I fell for the matias meme. Turns out the tactility is actually far greater than cherry switches. I'm bottoming out much more than on cherry clears though. There's not much travel past the bump. If only there was nearly as much keycap variety as with MX switches.
>>
>>57433413
no it isn't they are fundamentally and mechanically similar. The major difference is that in topre a capacitive sensing mechanism on the PCB senses the keypress mid-actuation. While in traditional membranes a conductive layer connects a pair of circuit traces together

If you were to try would you be able to bottom out less? Do you overall like them more than MX Clears?
>>57433413
>>57433642
I would say that the activation mechanisms are fundamentally different as Topre doesn't require one to bottom out, however, the feeling the operator experiences are similar. I don't notice the little spring but I do like the cushiony feeling of the rubber dome bottoming out, which I can't avoid.
>>
>>57433666
>If you were to try would you be able to bottom out less?
Maybe, but it seems like that'd take much more effort than on clears. There's about 1mm of travel after the bump. Maybe the matias clicks have more travel after the bump since the slider isn't damped? I've only had it for a few hours now, so I'm not sure if I'll end up preferring them over clears. The extra tactility sure is nice though.

>>57433666
Ya and the type of non contact switch seems interesting to me. Membrane/dome keyboards never did it for me but I made do with it. Mainly having to smash them down without any tactile feedback was annoying and why I use cherry switches.

And a big use for me is gaming. I can see the claims of APM increasing in games being true. At least for spamable type stuff. The speed increase not so sure about. I can see them being fast but not that much faster.

Anyway I'll decide tonight if I put in a pre order.

not him, but personally I like the softness and texture of PBT key caps compared to ABS. There is also the plus side that PBT is a stronger plastic and is more resistant to wear and shine compared to ABS.
>>
>>57434080
They get polished by the oils on your fingertips. So even if they aren't supposed to be shiny (and those obviously aren't) they'll quickly end up that way. It's not harmful, but it can be unsightly and unpleasant to touch.

PBT is immune to this effect, but caps made with it are more expensive because the tooling is harder to make.

the fact these people are creating things "worth" hundreds of dollars out of a few cents of plastic only adds to the ridiculousness of it.
>>
>>57434302
Vortex makes some nice PBT caps that come stock on the Poker series. Lately WASD has been putting those on their boards (because everyone complained at the awful quality of their in-house ABS caps). Both brands make boards with clear switches.

I've had a Unicomp Model M for a few years now, great keyboard overall. The plastic casing is a lot more flimsy feeling than the IBM ones, but the typing feels great. I'd recommend getting the "Ultra Classic" over the Classic; you'll miss out on that classic look, but the plastic will be a lot more firm and less cheap feeling. Great typing experience no matter what. USB version is 2KRO btw, shouldn't matter for most people though.
>>
>>57434599
I honestly don't know if I should because they have some shortcut labels on them.

i don't think the novatouch ever came in fullsize, but i'm probably wrong

looks like a wasd v2 to me

ah fug, guess I'll endure it and get swole fingers. It doesn't seem like a big deal so far for me. Plus I saved quite some money.
>>
>>57433370

The spring is the electrostatic capacitive component. It's not holding the key up and it's not supposed to contribute to the keyfeel. Hell it can't even hold up a 1g ABS keycap by itself.

As the spring's coils compress and come closer together from the dome collapsing on it, the spring's capacitance changes and this change is what is sensed by the PCB.

There's no actuation/contact mechanism at all, which is why it's proper to call it a capacitive switch rather than mechanical, and why they're more reliable than common rubber dome over membrane.
>>
>>57435474
blacks are linear where as browns are tactile. Its a matter of preference, but I'm sure for a cheap keyboard there really isn't much for options
>>
>>57433771
I wouldn't choose Topre for gaming. I love it for typing and can use it for gaming but it's pretty hard to spam with it.
>>57434574
How does it compare to other switches?
>>57435714
And knowing there will not be chatter is really nice, but I care most about how it feels and it feels great.
>>
>>57435742
Yeah, for a Majestouch full size it was a pretty good deal as it's like new.
I'll get used to it I guess.

As a silver lining these are less noisy. I can see myself using them comfortably in the long term.
>>
>>57435474
They probably did you a favor, honestly. The tactility on cherry browns is so weak that it's not useful as feedback and just makes the switch feel gritty.

On the note of KRO, would the USB version be able to handle more keys if I used a PS/2 adapter, or should I just get the PS/2 version?
>>
>>57436175

Model Ms are always 2KRO because of the way they're designed. Doesn't matter what interface you use.
>>
>>57436237
Shucks. That might be the deal-breaker for me. As much as I like typing on buckling springs, even simple action games are difficult with only 2KRO. I guess it's blues+rings for me then.
>>
>>57436237
Wait what really

People actually by keyboards that lock them out of a lot of useful 3-key shortcuts by design?
>>
>>57436268

I'm still waiting for Ellipse to stop being a gigantic faggot and start making some capacitive buckling spring boards with modern layouts and non-nostalgiashit cases.

>>57436286

2KRO means the board is guaranteed to properly register at least two keys being pressed anywhere on the board. ie: you could have row/column collisions, but you can always at least single out one key by row and one by column.

You can still register more than two keys in a lot of cases, it just depends on the matrix layout and which keys are being pressed. It's not like you can't ctrl-alt-delete on a 2KRO board for example.
>>
>>
>>57436013
An order of a GON assembly 2 years ago.
>>
>>57436268
Model Fs are NKRO but they're all pre-ANSI layout.

All capacitive and hall effect boards have NKRO by necessity of the switch design.
>>
>>57436343
Can you ctrl+shift+esc at least? Probably the single most useful keyboard shortcut in Windows
>>
>>57436376
So that's the key combo I've been looking for.
>>
Is the ducky pocket still a thing?
>>
>>57436376

Yes, all common key combos work. Matrix layouts always give modifier keys high priority because they're specifically meant to be pressed with other keys.

All common shitty rubberdome keyboards are 2KRO too and if a key combo wouldn't work on one of those it never would have been added to the OS in the first place since virtually no users would be able to us it.

Dunno where to begin. If it's a short don't I have to replace the board? All the guides I'm reading involve washing the kb after the spill, but the key's already gone.

Generally just cleaning the board fixes most water damage. But ya it can be a bit of a pain in the ass. I don't know how tough the Fillcos are to take apart.

As for recommendation on new keyboard I don't know.
