Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm trying to find a model that would be good for lan gaming and for getting work done.

I have to say, compared to my t430, I don't much like this t440p. I'll have to get a new dock if I keep it, plus they changed the power adaptors?! Fucking why? Plus it smells like a nigger's car, black and milds and that fucking black ice air freshener that they all use because they are black

I like my t500. Core2Duo is still hanging in there, ATI graphics barely enough to get by on these days, maxed out the ram, and its on an SSD with a second SSD stuffed in the ultrabay.

It's better than the integrated but still not THAT better.

IMG_0193.png

>>
>>57393802
To put it in simple terms: 40-80% is where the battery is happy. Get over or under those percentages, or heat the battery up, and you damage the battery, and thus lose maximum charge.

It's better to leave it charged for convenience; letting it drop to 40% and then recharge doesn't really have any measurable positive benefit to the battery's overall lifetime, so it's best to just leave it at 80% (may display as 79%) whenever it's plugged in so you have the maximum away-from-wall charge.
>>
>>57393787
Depends of the quad core and if you have the dGPU or not which shares the heatsink with the processor.

2630qm and 2670qm seems safe, there's a guy showing temps on a t420 and doing the upgrade on youtube.

Next is the 2720qm which i know some anons here are running and looks stable enough, here are some testimonials from another thread >>57380032 >>57380054 >>57380134

Anything past that seems housefire tier and you should've gotten a T520/W520 instead.
>>
>>57393832
>>57393802
Almost forgot to mention: every 2-3 months, do sudo tlp recalibrate again. Don't do it too often (it goes to 100% and then down to 0% to get an accurate reading on how much power there is), but don't forget about it completely. This keeps your battery percentage reader accurate, and prevents over or under charging on day-to-day use.
>>
>>57393837

Thanks I'll check those out. I don't have the dGPU. I've been thinking, what if I bought a dGPU cooler and stuck it in my non dGPU system. would the extra copper draw more heat away? Looking at the design of the dGPU heatsink I think not. But it's worth a thought.

I have antergos on thinkpad and need a few windows programs I haven't been able to run on Linux. Is there a way or guide on how to install windows after antergos?
>>
I have an x201 now and it's great, but I've been feeling like getting a machine that's a bit different. Is there any thinkpad model with:

1. 12+ hour battery life without external batteries
2. Runs super cool (don't care about performance)

My x201 gets around 10 hours from 0-100, but I keep it between 40-80 (so only 4 hours), so I want something with a bit better absolute performance. That, and it tends to run hotter than is completely comfortable just idling.
>>
>>57393867
I don't think it'll help at all because the dGPU heatsink will be connected to nothing and all the heat is still trapped there since the fan size is the same.

Also knowing the thinkpad modding community with all the wikis and whatnot if that were a viable alternative it'd be somewhat known by now.
>>
>>57393885
No problem, anon! Good luck on your Thinkpad adventure.
>>
Apparently Ivy Bridge CPUs can be used in a T420 now thanks to Coreboot

https://www.coreboot.org/Board:lenovo/t420
>>
>>57393951
>https://www.coreboot.org/Board:lenovo/t420

Beat me to it. How do the thermals compare on Ivy Bridge to Sandy Bridge? With the size shrink I'd assume it would run cooler? I was literally 2 minutes from pulling the trigger on a 2nd gen quad core.
>>
>>57393980
According to Intel's website, both i7's have the same TDPs (45w), and so do both of the i5's (35w). So, most likely, exactly the same under load, but during idle and mildly demanding tasks, the Ivy Bridge processors are probably cooler.

>>57393980
>>57394003
Coreboot apparently doesn't have thermal management by default, and the only way to do it is linux software-side, so take that as you will.
>>
>>57393951
That looks it'd be unstable, I'd still wait for some more development before trying the hardware flashing.

As in "works fine except for X, Y and Z", "random unsolved issues because there hasn't been enough testing" or "works fine until you do X" unstable tier.

Just an opinion though, i hope I'm wrong because looks tempting to do in the future.

I got my x220 for $100 on ebay. Came with 9cell battery and I get about four hours battery life, wrong layout keyboard and a regular screen.

Would like something that lasted longer on a battery life, maybe 9 to 12 hours, with a better screen. Don't really want to spend a lot of money.

If I buy a battery $80, a keyboard $50 (may be zero if I sell mine which seems to be a rare one) and a screen ($90) I will have another $200 in it. Should I just buy a x240 and sell this one or should I try to get a hold of the x320 mod kit??

As you can see, both heatpipes doesn't touch each other anymore. In fact they're separated with some rubber.
Also part of the heatsink that touches both GPU and CPU isn't precisely bent on the proper angle, so it doesn't fully touch any of these two. It's pretty much a design flaw, since that's like the 3rd T430/T420 I'm modifying for that purpose.
Also tpfancontrol needs to be used in order to unlock the fastest fan state (7).

Some info if anyone is interested:
GPU 100% load, CPU 0% load = 70C on GPU, 60C on CPU
GPU 0% load, CPU 100% load = 45C on GPU, 95C on CPU
GPU 100% load, CPU 100% load = 80C on GPU, 98C on CPU
after 10 minutes throttling on the CPU kicks in, so it lowers the frequency to 3.2GHz on all cores (from 3.4GHz, DOESN'T GO BELOW THAT)
and 0% CPU load, 0% GPU load = 45C on CPU, 38C on GPU.
Throttling on CPU kicks in at 101C, on GPU 92C.
Plus both CPU and GPU combined under full load uses more than 90W of power, so you need to either connect a battery to the laptop and use 90W PSU (which drains the battery only a little bit, due to hybrid power function) or you need to use 135W PSU, which T430 actually supports.

Also, just to clarify: CPU was always used with HT and Turbo enabled. GPU was overclocked to 900MHz (from 800MHz) and vRAM OCed from 900MHz to 1140MHz.
All these results are very comparable to what T440p achieves by default.

Kek, actually from 3.3GHz to 3.2GHz, and it seems you just need to raise the back of laptop a little bit or use it in colder environment, and it doesn't throttle.
I wanted to sell this laptop due to limited capabilities cauesd by throttling, but now I'm gonna keep it and invest some money in 1080p screen mod. Fuck yeah

The T420 has that feature by default.

>>
>>57401633
That is usually an issue with W7 not having a required driver built-in. You'll have to load whatever driver it wants into your boot image to get it to work. Sometimes taking the usb out and putting it into a different usb port works. For example, windows 7 doesn't have drivers for usb 3.0 so you may be able to boot to the usb stick and load the initial installer menu, but once inside windows 7 loses all visibility of the usb 3.0 ports. Same thing would happen with optical devices that may have come out after your windows 7 image.
>>

Another option is to try to boot from usb 2.0 port if the laptop has one, or disable usb 3.0 in bios if that option is available.

yeah i figured out that was the thing, it won't detect the USB ports at all when you're in the W7 installation. Not detecting the 3.0 ports I get but two of the ports I have are supposed to be 2.0 and it doesn't see them either. I tried the trick of swapping USB ports while in there but it refuses to detect any of them.

So what's next? Is it possible to somehow get the drivers in the installation media? I've heard of that. Or is there a simpler way?

I will try disabling 3.0

Well it has served me pretty well, works flawlessly for my requirements and with the docking station it replaced my desktop entirely.

>I was thinking of doing something like this to a T460 or T450 if its possible. Is it possible?
If i remember correctly, for an eGPU setup you need to have one of these ports available: mini pci-e, ngff, expresscard or thunderbolt.

I'm using an ExpressCard adapter because it was dirt cheap and it's pretty convenient since you only have to plug/unplug it when docking or undocking.

>How is the noise when idle or using GPU work?
The GPU turns its fan off by itself and i turn the T420 fan off until it reaches 60c with TPfancontrol so it's silent, hell the HDD is louder than the entire setup.
With load it's the same as a desktop GPU basically but i use headphones so no big deal.

>How is heat?
No perceivable changes at all and i'm running a quad core processor instead of the stock T420 dual cores as you can see in that screenshot.

>Anything should know when doing this ahead if of time?
From my experience it works flawlessly on W7 but never managed to make it work on Linux, it's pretty straightforward too. You just plug the cables, turn on the computer, install drivers, reboot, done.

Aspie thinkfags love to rip on the E series, I actually have one.

AMD A10 2.5ghz quad, 8650G Radeon APU and 16gb of memeRAM. 1tb 7200rpm. Win7 Enterprise. It will play just about any of the old Source games well over 50fps at max res with all the eyecandy jacked up. It's about on par with a mid-range i5 or a top-shelf i3.

Battery life isn't bad. The "i" in Thinkpad is a red light on the palm rest AND the lid, it's actually kind of cool. With an SSD it would probably be a little faster.

If you play older games like me it will absolutely rape face. I wouldn't play anything past Borderlands 2 on it and expect a miracle.

It only has two real cons. The build quality is, well, don't drop it. I found out the hard way. It's a plastic piece of crap. The second is if you upgrade to the A10, I know it's advertised with a turbo mode of like 3.5ghz or something but you will rarely see it because it hits the 35W TDP ceiling on a simple YouTube 1080 HD video. Most of your games it will throttle down to 2ghz. Even at 2ghz you will still have decent frame rates in Counterstrike: Source.

In all reality no one buys a Thinkpad to play games, but this one will do it and it will do it better than most Intel integrated graphics offerings even into the current i7 line.

If you get an E545 like I have, upgrade the RAM to 16gb. I don't care if /g/ says its a meme, it's pretty awesome to be able to run your entire OS, Photoshop, Lightroom and a video game and 1080P HD video all at once off only the memory and not bog the system down. Memory is dirt fucking cheap right now don't be a poorfag, get the 16g. I think I paid like 150 retail for mine, bought it on the road.

I'm shitposting from my Win 7 Enterprise T60. Here's how you make it work worth a shit with the ATi graphics.

You will almost need a Core 2 Duo T-series. They will run hot it's a Merom core. There is a guide on the forums about how to cool one off using a W500 heatsink and fan, some clever bending, a mild undervolt and Arctic Silver 5. You'll take a small hit on battery life but you'll gain a shit ton of horsepower. Almost double your L2 cache and a jump from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Max memory is 3gb. Get it if you pay anything more than 10 dollars you're a dumb ass.

The ATi x1300 has no Win 7 driver I think I forced a Vista driver or something and made it work. I can't be assed to remember how I did that but I have all the files and shit on my T60 still so if you really want to make an X1300 work on 7 let me know I can dropbox them.

Get an SSD. Really kicked this thing into high gear. Even a cheap 70 dollar 128gb sped this thing up nice.

>i7 X220 can't sustain 3400 MHz without reaching 90 C+ and throttling
What the fuck is the point of turboboost if this piece of shit oveheats and throttles? The fan whines at 4500+ RPM without being able to dissipate the heat. On the far left of the internals, there's a literal empty space 2' wide (I know, took it apart to replace thermal paste) with only two wifi wires going through; this could easily have been used to increase the fan and/or heatpipe size. The goddamn dual heatpipe in this is pathetic, and the fan ever worst since it simply cannot disapate the heat.
>thinkpads are well-designed and have good engineering
What a fucking joke. Is there some mod to add a better fan and fix this bullshit?
>>
>>57407940
turbo boost is ideally for just loading applications quicker, not running stress tests on your computer
And I wouldn't really call it throttling unless it goes below it's stock non turbo clock speed.
>>
>>57407966
>stress tests
Decoding 1080p HEVC is enough to shoot the frequency up, and 20 minutes into it the temps are throttling and frequency clocks down to 800 MHz. This isn't a problem with my thermal paste application nor the stock thermal paste, since testing with both the temps went down nearly immediately to ~60 C when pausing playback. So the issue clearly is the that the tiny pathetic fan, whining at 4500+ RPM, cannot dissipate the heat. It's poor design (like I said, there's empty space in the chassis), and makes the CPU useless in sustained usage. The CPU is capable of more, but the thermal design cannot dissipate the heat of a 35W 3400MHz CPU. I'm more than disappointed, to say the least of the crap machine.

X240 will perform worse than an X230 due to only having one RAM slot. Dual channel makes its biggest impact in iGPU performance.

$150 is a pretty damn great price for all that stuff.

I should of clarified that E series were built shitty. I am still a bit skeptical about performance, I'm not familiar with AMD CPU performances off the top of my head and generally most E series have i3 or Celerons.

The real issue to me is the build quality compared to other thinkpads. The keyboard is atrocious, all the wasted space for looks, & just a bottom plastic frame connecting to metal hinges! Unlike the R series, it still had a subframe from the T Series but for the bottom they used ABS plastic.

The reason is that business & corporations send them off to recycling centers. These machines are written off, to the recycling places, either they sell it for a high price, or they sell it for whatever to get rid of it, they get this shit all the time. Because there is plenty of them, you can find them super cheap. However when it comes to consumer devices, there is a more probable chance it is being sold by the original owner or secondhand. Unless the seller needs the money, there is a high chance they will want to sell it for a lot more.
Specwise might be the same, but most consumers will like the looks of the consumer machine.
Thats why generally most Dell XPS laptop & desktops will look like it depreciate less than a compareable Dell Precision.
>>
>>57412796
thats normal
>>
>>57412915

It does have a crap build.

The AMD A10 is pretty decent for 99% of what most people will use it for and I like mine. It plows through Lightroom and Photoshop without nary a hiccup. And it stays relatively cool for a laptop at full tilt it will touch 65*C. The rest of the time you can't even feel it.

I like mine enough to where I'm buying a dead one and swapping all my good stuff into it. My co-driver smashed it because he wasn't paying attention.

I forgot to mention it has USB 3.0, HDMI out, and that weird USB made for external drives, and it has two of those ports.
>>
>>57412796
That's fine. Could be much better (>>57400134), but that requires much more work.
If it doesn't throttle then it's completely fine. Especially when it's the sandy bridge CPU.
>>
>>57413104
eSATA?
or the USB with a printer/power port?

That is strange.
People who come into my work want a laptop with HDMI out. It's funny how they'll pass up a business laptop or desktop with DisplayPort.

I've got an X131e w/ an i3 that is missing a screen. Just want to get another dead X130 or X140e and swap em. But most dead ones cost a bit more than I want to chew. Last case is swapping an X120e screen after dremelling the hinges.
>>
Tried to flash on my X60 and rebooted after the first flash, but now it does not show anything. Is it bricked or just the screen's not working?

Look up slipstreaming tools. Also use an offline downloader to download updates on another PC while doing your installation.

Recovery media works pretty often too.

You don't need more drivers for the initial install than are required to see the hard disk. Accessory drivers including networking can be added later after downloading them on something else.

My favorite trick to download drivers is using a live Linux USB which supports the hardware (Ubuntu variants work well). Download the drivers using Linux, then boot to Windows to install them.

Keep a few live USB OS handy (FalconFour has a nice WinPE environment and other OS including Linux and DOS tools and hard disk diagnostics) and your life will be easy.
>>
>>57395621
Come on, I should just blindly buy it and hope for the best?
>>
>>57398636
Any you like. If not sure try in virtual machines first or boot live off the same USB you'd use to install anyway.
>>
>>57399253
I suggest getting an external enclosure and a good desktop (not slim) DVD burner for it. I save older DVD burners like Plextors because new ones have shit quality control now that burning isn't important.
>>
>>57401633
You can slave the drive into another machine, install W7, download the drivers for your Thinkpad but don't install them, then install your hard drive into your Thinkpad, boot and finish the installation.

I suggest also downloading all your W7 updates using an offline updater so they'll be on your hard drive. Install the offline updates after the drive is back in your Thinkpad.

Well it has buttons unlike the T440's unibody pad. I thought it was commonly agreed upon by Thinkpad communities that transplanting the T450 pad into the T440 is an essential mod if you're going to buy a T440.

The cycle never ends. I just want to get my hands on one of the genuine high gamut 1080p panels for the T520/W520.

Not only that but the X240 CPU itself is noticeably weaker regardless of RAM since it's a ULV while the X230
>>
>>57416863
That wasn't my question. I asked if the 14 inch has ANY IPS option.

I don't give a fuck how common it is. I give a fuck how possible it is. I'd like a Frankenpad but not the 15 inch, and if there's no IPS screen of decent (read: more than 1024x768) resolution for 14 inch then there's no point
