Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Why does the bios firmware on the T420 past 1.37 remove the capability of higher frequency RAM?
>>
>>57418151
For X230 and any T series yes.

For X240 and up, no.

Otherwise, it's the layout changes that bug most people, however the keyboard itself is still the best laptop keyboard out there, owing to great tactile feel and that the keys curve inward unlike any other chiclet. I find it feels way nicer to type on than T60-T420 series.

Still think the keyboards pre-T60 were the best, though

I'm fine with it since it's such a small screen.
1600x900 would be ideal, but 1366x768 is good enough for my use on that machine
Plus it's not like most other laptops that size are any better.
The retina macbook pro 13" is any better, it runs at 1280x800 effectively which is the exact same as the x201/x200 (and lower res t400/t410)

Just bought a t420 off eBay. This will be my first non Mac device I have other than my phone and my first computer I have for myself. How does the T450 compare to the T420? I was originally going to get a T420 but I saw a T450 for around $300. Would the extra 120 bucks be worth it?
>>
Bought an x220 off Ebay and after just a few days, the backlight fuse went out (I think). Do I have a case to bring uo with the seller and/or Ebay or is it out of their hands? Also, is there a fix?
>>
>>57421531
holy shit yes
yeah the trackpad is annoying, and the keyboard layout is stupid.
But $300 for a t450 is bretty damn good (assuming that it's in good condition, and isn't a base model)
>>
>>57421531
T450 just as far as pure performance will usually be leaps and bounds ahead of the T420. Although sad part is, a lot of the newer thinkpads will be garbage tier 1366x768 even when the T410/T420 Had 1440x900 and 1600x900.

Overall the T420 will be way cheaper to maintenance as well as find spare parts for so it's up to you. For $300 though, not a bad deal at all by any means.

Completely unrelated. Who here has a T420? Has anyone done a 1080p IPS swap? My 1600x900 panel is decent, but I'd like a better screen overall. My Chromebook has a beautfiul 13.3" 1080p screen and sitting them side by side, the CB is WAY nicer to look at. Thinking of doing a swap. I don't know yet though.
>>
>>57421693
the t420 was the first to have the shitty 1366x768 screen
the t440 and above where the first ones to actually offer a good screen (1080p ips, and I think a 1440p ips)
>>
>>57421693
>T450 just as far as pure performance will usually be leaps and bounds ahead of the T420
What about a T420 with a quad core processor?
>>
>>57421773
quad core meaning an 8 thread i7? Like the i7-2630qm? I have a standard i7-2620m (2c4t) and it is clocked faster. If you're doing a lot of VM work or encoding then get the T420 with quad core. Keep in mind the T420 wasn't really meant to handle the heat load of an 8 thread i7.

If you're not doing work that would truly benefit from more threads, get the T450.
>>
>>57421850
>T420 wasn't really meant to handle the heat load of an 8 thread i7
But looks like it manages fine, there's plenty of proof in the past thread.

Though i agree that only the multicore performance would be massively improved.
>>
>>57421941
by handle the load I meant when the 8 thread CPU is locked at 100%. Encoding, compiling, etc. Thing gets toasty. Not over heating mind you, but easily gets up to 87C+.

Idk I just feel the only thinkpads you should stuff an 8 thread CPU into is the T5xx and W5xx series. Although I like my T420, kind of wishing I had just spent the $500 on a W530. Still might. But at that price range, why not get a Dell Precison? I got to play with one of those firsthand not too long ago. Those things are VERY well made.

Something has been bugging me for a while, I had to open and replace my T520 screen about a year ago. I use it as my main machine so the screen is really in the same position all the time but I noticed ever since disassembled and reassembled it the lid/hinges feels much stiffer than I remembered, to the point I feel if I opened and closed it regularly it'd have broken by now.

Question, are hinges supposed to have variable stiffness/tension and if so how? according to how much you tighten the screws? I don't really mind them being stiff, just want it to last.
>>
I just ordered a t520. What's the first thing I should do?

Okay, I'm confused. The company I bought this X230 from said it was the i5-3120m on the specsheet but according to Dxdiag I have the i5 3320m. But the Lenovo driver updater thingy tells me I have a X230i. Did the guy who had the computer before me upgrade the CPU, or what?

Anybody use either these box type Ultradock or the traditional flat base type with a new Thinkpad?

I have a X240 and find it fast enough for me to possibly use it also as a replacement for a C2D iMac desktop that cant upgrade past Mavericks.

Be careful tho because the regular thinkpad mini docking station has some audio unshielded issues that can cause noisy audio jacks. Do research first. Other than that it works nice. I have tested both the normal mini 3 docking and the advanced mini dock 3 and desu not worth the price, but i got them both free from work so idk. I'd try finding a used / cheap one somewhere for less and getting either the traditional dock or the tower / cube dock whichever is cheapest will do the trick regardless. Make sure you double check compability on both types and audio shielding on the dock if u get the mini

You can't activate it because your product key (OEM license) is locked to your laptop's hardware signature, which your VM doesn't have.
Doesn't matter how many ISOs you get from shady places, that key is never going to activate on anything but your laptop's bare metal.

You can either pirate Windows or buy a new license if you want a Windows VM.

I run Daz Loader to activate in a VM.

This is the smart way:
Install Windows and skip activation. Take a clean Snapshot. Then activate with the loader. If you get a loader bundled with adware, you can either continue to run it, or revert to the clean Snapshot to try a different download. Your Snapshot of unactivated Windows will remain virginal! I fucking love Snapshots and Virtualbox in general.

Spend a while getting familiar with warez. VMs are magnificent for trying different OS and apps because you can boot from any Snapshot to experiment. Installing to VMs is fast, easy, and you can do other tasks uninterrupted.

But under the "Users" menu in Gnome, it doesn't give me an option to use the scanner, suggesting that it doesn't recognize it. I've heard it may be necessary to enable it in the bios, but while looking through the bios I wasn't quite able to figure out what to do? Anyone have experience with this situation?

>>
>>57438068
youtube it
iirc the board is upside down so you'll need a complete diss assembly
>>
>>57424404
My friend has one, it's shit. Not a thinkpad. If you want a gayman machine wait for thinkpad with Thunderbolt or get p50

>T440: $360, $420

Wait, what? I just picked up an i7 4600u model for $160 from a guy on craigslist that I'm typing on right now. Did I hit a jackpot?
>>
I got me a nice T430, i5 3320m 8GB, no Nvidia,
What kind of thinkfan config should I run?
Currently using this:

(0, 0, 60)
(1, 57, 65)
(2, 63, 75)
(3, 72, 80)
(4, 78, 90)
(5, 87, 95)
(7, 92, 32767)

but I think it might be a little high. Thoughts?

running Arch GNU/Linux on an X220T. What should I be doing to get more battery life? I have heard of tlp and powermizer, but have not read much about how to use them, and I'm not sure if they should be used together or not.
>>
>>57438560
tlp works really good. You can set the battery thresholds easily
>>
do thinkpads have a setting in BIOS to run lower resolutions in 1:1 mode?
I have a old dell laptop that does this and it's so nice for older games that have fixed resolutions
>>
Are there any Thinkpads made of aluminum?
>>
>>57433190
you can get wired old layout or wireless new layout AFAIK
>>
>>57438582
just to clarify I want to last longer on battery, not just extend the overall lifetime of the battery itself

I've got a 9cell I believe which I guess means it's probably not an official battery and it only lasts like 2 or 3 hours

any guides for configuring tlp?
>>
>>57438630
I think some of the HP Elitebooks have at least partially metal cases. None of the ThinkPads do that I know of.

i've heard the slice can get damaged easily btw. I don't think they sell them new anymore either.

I posted in this general awhile ago saying my status lights wheren't working and an anon said it was my inverter. Anyway I ordered an inverter I just want to know if I will need to take the screen out to replace it and if it will require any soldering? Just seems weird to me that leds would die and the screen works fine.

Coming from a Chromebook pixel, this display makes me sad

Where are the best places to get an x220?
>>
>>57417959
that would require all of the 6 trisquel users, and one of them is stallman himself so there is little point
>>
>>57434413
meh, just bought it because it was the last one. I might consider upgrading the screen to a 1600x900 one at somepoint.

which version are you using on the t410 ?

I want to try and downgrade

X220 owner here.

Somehow, I can't charge my laptop.
Assuming my charger's fucked, how much should I expect to pay for a new one?
>>
I've been offered a X220 or X230T for around £130 from my company as they clear some stock out?

Better to get the older laptop or the newer tablet version?
>>

Why do people hate the new thinkpads so much?
The only thing i can find wrong with them is they are expensive and the keyboard layout is worse.
>>
>>57440415
the new thinkpads look like a grey plastic macbook

and they lost a lot of functionalities
>>
>>57440436
>muh looks

and all the functionality is almost all exclusively related to the new keyboard format
>>
>>57436240

Solely depends on your needs.
I stuffed an expresscard to RS232 converter because I need access to legacy hardware.

>>
>>57423110
both are nice, x201 if you get the bigger res panel if not, x220 with the ips panel. Avoid anything with TN at all costs.
>>
Can someone explain core boot? I get that it means I can change the processor but still really confused by it.
>>
>>57439933
whats the screen resolution on that?
>>
>>57440610

>>
>>57423745
don't be a cheap bastard, batteries are easy to come by and you could get one for it without problems. Do not get cheap chinese ones, those are a ixed bag to say the least and you could get a decent battery or one that will explode in a week.
>>
>>57418165
You can still reflash the bios with a hardware flasher, if you fucked it up in software
>>
>Buy Thinkpad X230
>Install Arch with Plasma on it

hmmm all the T520's on ebay don't seem to be 1900x800

anyone have good source where to find step up form a T420 but same style with higher resolution than 1600x900

Yes, you fell for the Arch meme.

T420s with 8gig. Could've used more, but lenovo recommends max 8GB. Anybody tried 12/16GB?

Any similar rams will work, or do u have to be careful for models/series?

What's the general consensus on newer thinkpads? Got the yoga 12 thinkpad because I needed a small laptop with screen I could write on, and so far really enjoy it but battery life is weak and I find the digitizer to be very wonky to get working right. Anything I can do about it?
>>
>>57440736
1440x900.
>>
>>57441241
I have stock 4gb stick and I added a 8gb g.skill 8GB so different ram and zero issues.

You should be fine
>>
>>57418224
I recently got one with the 6820HQ and the 1440p display (definitely get that unless you prefer the 1080p IPS panel). I don't run Linux on it, but everything has been perfect with it so far. Good build, nice screen, powerful and good battery life. Also like the other guy said, get the 72whr battery, it also doubles as a nice little stand which tilts it up for better cooling and typing
>>
>>57441273

yeah, except the trackpad buttons
>>

>>
>>57441335
Is it still worth if I can get one under 450 for specs alone?
>>
>>57441380
because >>57418192

It's also more customizable.
>>
>>57440691

It allows the BIOS to do more than what lenovo intended for it to do.

For example the pci whitelist is gone, meaning you can stick a different wi-fi card in it.

It also allows for faster ram to be installed and used, boosting performance.
>>
>>57441104

I too have made this mistake.

Now I dual boot w7 for car diagnostics and fedora for general use.

Coreboot on phone

that's an old one, a lot of what he complained about like the trackpad was fixed for the broadwell and skylake thinkpads

Would a used t510 8gb ram be a good alternative to a mac for creative apps like cs6 and affinity designer? Would I be able to use those apps through virtualbox reliably or would I have to dual boot into Windows?
>>
I have exactly this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNA6WUBOTpk on my T420. Am I alone?
>>
>>57442450
Mine has it too.
>>
>>57442401
There's always some penalty running in a VM but you can run Windows as a host and Linux as guest OS. I don't quite get why people dual boot on modern hardware, apps which specifically require direct hardware access excepted.

Run an SSD of course. Spinners are slow junk good only for storage, but you can leave a spinner in a caddy or dock if needed.
>>
>>57442450
My t430s is the same. Do you need new hinges to fix this or is it just loose screws?

My T420 battery has lost 10% capacity in 10 cycles, I think its fucked...

Any recommendations on a cheap good battery?
>>
>>57442919
>cheap
>good
Those two don't go together but a nice all-rounder would be something like >>57427971
>>
>>57442919
Anker batteries work well for me, but best way if you really need to run off batteries is have more than one charged battery with you so you. Some Thinkpad docks can charge an extra battery along with running the notebook.
>>
>>57443020
>>57443050
What if I need just 1 hour of work, can I go with cheapest chink battery or it's just dangerous?

Anker is worth almost 100$ with shipping, dont wanna to spend that money to 170$ laptop.
>>
>>57443140
I run the chink battery. Worst case it dies and buy another different battery.

I see inexpensive laptops as an advantage since I have less invested total and hence don't mind buying a decent battery now and then. Cost per year of use is still very little.
