Does it get updates so I don't have to use a smartphone with dirty COW and stagefright?

If yes, take my money.
>>
I would consider an archphone
>>

this. serious question right here
>>

This.

If it had the update cadence of desktop linux, and decent enough hardware that, when docked, would operate as a nice workstation, then I would consider it.

can I run software direct off the processor, can i have access to the linux binaries?

>lubuntu + LXDE for desktop mode
>full usb 3.1 type-c support for charging, driving a display, and highspeed data

this would be ideal. it would be a mobile workstation that can be used in "mobile mode" when not attached to a monitor.

but is a normal desktop experienced when docked.

it would be even better if i could just dualboot my android phone. boot android when mobile, and then boot ubuntu when workstation scenario calls for it.

No version of Linux on phones will ever get updates in a reasonable timeframe because of hardware vendors.

They're all on age-old 2.x kernels with shittons of backports because the proprietary drivers needed for mobile chipsets don't receive upstream updates

If you want a secure phone, you have to give up the ability to make calls. (Thus defeating the purpose)

It is literally just an ARM build of Ubuntu with their convergence UI on top. So yes, you can run any program, just like on a desktop, through the terminal emulator or other means.

Heck, if you are willing to ditch any touch friendliness you can even run desktop apps natively (pic related)

I just ordered one blind because >dat aesthetic

Haven't regretted it one bit. It's basically just like a normal linux distro but for the phone. If you're used to desktop linux I can highly, highly recommend it.

All the usual stuff (systmctl, dmesg, ifconfig, ssh etc.) just wurkz, and the system is based on rpm packages (you can use zypper with it). Very much unlike android which is sort of maybe kinda technically based on linux but with shittons of java bloat strapped on top and none of the usual linux userspace, which basically makes it a completely separate OS.

Also, despite the hardware being extremely modest, it runs orders of magnitude better and more smoothly than my peers' bloated lagfests.
>>
>>57352455
How compatible is it with Android software?
>>
>>57351811
IT'S SHIIIIIIIT
>>
>>57352494
It runs pretty much everything I've tried, although note that running the android emulation layer eats like half your device's memory. (The hardware isn't designed for enterprise bloat-tier apps)
>>
>>57352403
what is 8 track ?
>>
>>57351786
Look at that UI. Everything is so tiny! Even with a stylus that looks absolutely unusable! You can't even see the text!
>>
>>57352455
Almost zero native apps. They're probably on the verge of going bankrupt because of how few users they have.
>>
>>57352583
Kids these days...
Remember sony walkman cassettes? 8-track is a similar format that predates them.
>>
>>57351206
Why is thete a half a meter long bezel at the bottom of that phone?
>>
>>57352403
And they would absolutely support it.
>>
>>57352583
Maybe something capable of playing 8 tracks of music? Possibly
>>
>>57351206
No, absolutely not. It sounds like a nightmare to be honest. Linux has virtually zero professional user-facing support. If your phone gets a weird bug enjoy crawling half-abandoned web-forums full of people who barely even speak the same language you just to find a "nvm it fixed itself :)" post from 3 years ago.

Also,
>bootloader fucks up and dies
>have to reset grub
>on your fucking phone
Seriously, I cannot imagine buying one. You could not even pay me to own one.
>>
>>57351327
>lose your phone
>lose you your life + your work
kek great plan what could ever go wrong
>>
>>57351206
I'd ditch android for a "root-out-of-the-box" OS that could be flashed to my phone. We should #TurnLaptopsIntoCellphones, unify the architecture and modules to make installing your own OS possible.
>>
>>57352656
Couldn't it be the responsibility of the company who manufactures the phone? Seems to me it would be that way. BQ is manufacturing the Ubuntu phone, Canonical is responsible for the user experience. Might be like windaz support.
>>
>>57352669
Have you ever heard about bitbucket/dropbox/external HDD for larger files?
>>
>>57352669
>not automatically backing shit up to cloud/externalHDD

I guess if you lose your laptop, it's the same, isn't it?
>>
>>57351239
Last time i checked they all get updates also i think they make opensource drivers for them. And almost every distro has patched dirtycow.
>>
>>57352656
>Linux has virtually zero professional user-facing support.
Linux has had proffesional support since before Windows was a thing, kiddo
>>
is this running on x86?
>>
>>57352617
>Almost zero native apps.
It has native apps for everything I need from my phone. (messages, music, contacts, browser, terminal, browser, IRC, mail, calendar, RSS, weather, photos, maps etc.)

>They're probably on the verge of going bankrupt because of how few users they have.
[citation needed]

Small companies can survive just fine, you only go bankrupt if you take on more loans than you can afford to pay back. Also, it's not like SailfishOS is some entirely new thing - it's just based on the existing community-driven Linux mobile efforts that existed before it.

If Jolla goes, the community will survive like it always has. Suit yourself, but I'm not touching mainstream blobshit with a 10ft pole.
