IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T61 motherboard ups the RAM limit from 3GB to 8 and lets you install Penryn Core 2 Duos, which are way better than Yonah or Merom. You also get SATA II support, but only if you flash Middleton's BIOS. I'd say it's well worth it. Just make sure you get an Intel iGPU board and not the Nvidia dGPU. Get an Advanced Dock if you'd like to have grafics.

Don't charge it to 100%.
Don't leave it charged at above 90% for prolong times.
Don't charge it while doing intensive tasks that generate heat.
Try to keep it nice and cool.

The main factors for shortened life is keeping it at 100% charge all the time and heat. The IBM/Lenovo software allows you to cap the charge rate at 90% so it won't charge any further.

That's it, I'm through with GNU/Linux.

I have tried Debian, Manjaro, Arch, Lubuntu and Xubuntu on my T420.

Something was always off with every one of these. Couldn't install thinkfan, or tlp, or the middle ultranav button didn't work like I wanted it to, couldn't configure charging thresholds, couldn't install a proper Latex distribution with working tlmgr, or the microphone mute button didn't work. And I spent days of my life following wiki tutorials and stackexchange posts.

I'm all for free software but IT JUST DOESN'T WERK in reality if you want to do serious work on your computer. And they say Thinkpads have good unix support. If you have the time and you enjoy reading 2010 hopeless stackexchange questions, by all means go ahead and rice out an i3gaps desktop and watch animé while you hang out on IRC.

I'm back to Windows 7 now. System Update utility installed all the drivers, everything works, MikTex with auto installation is a breeze, thinkfan is working properly, Battery Manager is working as expected.

Thanks for reading my blog post.

A legit Lenovo battery seems to cost anything between 70 and 100 dollars. I would not risk it with chink batteries, unless you want a house fire.
Also, when you buy your battery make sure its got the lenovo seal and that it is not broken. Also, check the production date, you want a fresh battery.

Sound advice, the only thing is that the Advanced GPU is a bit limited because of what graphics cards it can use without modding it.

>>57343208
Having a T601 frankie (whatever its called) was great, but this was around 2012/13 when I got mine. If you want that 4:3 form factor with an IPS screen it is really sweet to have. But, other than typing experience and having a 'solid built' device, since the introduction of IPS displays by Lenovo and other manufacturers, its sorta hard to recommend one now, at least not for a daily driver recommendation. It would be neat to have for a secondary or third machine, as the typing experience is pretty good, but even so some would prefer the slightly thinner T43 despite its setbacks, or the A3x which I do like because of its obscurity.

>>57351611
Its tough to say because after ivy bridge, Lenovo decided to slim down most of their machines.

A sixth gen i7 may sound better on paper, but the price for performance ratio would not outweigh a W530 or even a W540. There's a few people who recommend the T420 over the X220 because of the heatsink it is limited to, after owning a X1C3 & T430, I felt the performance difference like night at day.

>>57350928
Just watch a walkthough or download the HMM
T430's are pretty damn easy, as long as you keep track of which screws you pulled out you wont have any issues.

Also if you are upgrading from 720p to 900p I think you'll need the 900p LCD ribbon cable, as it is slightly different and may brick your shit.

I'm pretty sure CPUs are soldered on. It's pretty hard to diagnose artifacting like that with software like that.

>>57370873
It was plug and play for me, the BIOS detected the new cpu instantly.

Upgraded to a 2670qm.

>>57348582
I'd find a way to get at least 2GB in the thing. RAM is cheap and there's plenty on Ebay.

I've got a W540 and it's working really amazing but my only complain is it's lack of a HDMI port.

>OpenBSD is the only OS fit to run on a ThinkPad

The burden of proof of an assertion is on the person making it. What precise noticeable functional improvement does OpenBSD offer for ThinkPads and in which specific use case?
>>
>>57371955

Just buy a display port to HDMI dongle. They're like 4 dollars on fleabay and only an inch long.
>>
>>57371683
wut, next you're going to tell me it only runs 1333mhz ram.

Anyway to improve firmware boot times on my X240? It's the longest post in my systemd-analyze... Same boot times no matter if it's set to UEFI only or UEFI/Legacy.

The conexant audio chip in my T520 makes a cracking noise before and after I play a sound, probably because of power saving shit of the audio chip. Is there a fix for this?

I'm plugging display port monitor in my T420, and monitor doesn't even see that it is connected. Does DP works with you?

linux wont work as you want, the screen is terrible to look at it, etc

Oh well
I won't upgrade it soon anyway
>>
>>57372267
What OS? I just tried mine with Antergos and it didn't work I know it works with Windows 10
>>
>>57372267
Do you have the nvidia GPU? Are you on linux?
>>
>>57372112

Hmm. That's odd. I thought it was something I did wrong, but mine melted too. It never worked, and after about 5 minutes of it being plugged in, I started to smell the electrical burning smell.

It was the little black dongle that's about an inch long. I guess it's probably better to fork over a few extra dollars for a good brand.

Can get a deal on a T420s (i7-2640m, with nVidia however). Pros/cons compared to the regular T420?
I already know the limited battery capacity and the nVidia faggotry.

Don't listen to that anon. I've been running Qubes as my main for about a year now. Idk how I'll ever go back. It's astonishing that it hasn't really caught on.

(note: will be running ubuntu or some kind of arch distro)

From what I understand Qubes is a hypervisor running directly on the hardware? I don't understand how that works as far as peripherals and all that if it's not a linux layer at the bottom. Is the most trusted VM/template the one that interfaces with the ports/audio/networking etc?
>>
>>57372894

Dom0 interfaces with the peripherals. It's not networked at all, so you are correct.

Is it possible that I have 2.5mm audio jack on my T420? The 3.5mm 4 poles doesnt fit...

nice how much you pay? also specs?

Is it necessary to get the genuine 9 cell batteries to increase battery life or will generic work fine?
>>
>>57373657

Depends on your budget. Generics typically have 75% of the capacity of the genuine batteries, but their cost is between 30% and 50% of a genuine battery.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
