IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I need a new battery for my trusty t420. Anyone have any advice? Where should I look, what type of battery should I get?

I noticed the 9 cells stick out of the back a bit, is that uncomfortable at all?

I use a 9 cell and have never had any problems. I've been thinking about getting an ultrabay battery as well because I currently have a hard drive in my ultra bay that I don't really need.

buyers guide seems to only be for used thinkpads which i'm not interested in.

looking to buy a gift for my sister who keeps buying these shitty $200 laptops and breaking them. figured a thinkpad would be durable enough to last her, but not sure which models would be considered the most durable. yoga 11e seems good, but the tablet aspects makes me think it'll be less rugged than i'm looking for.

60GB SSD for the OS in the mSATA slot.
320GB HDD (7400 rpm)
1TB HDD (5400 rpm) in the optical drive slot

It was an excellent ebay bargain with the 320GB HDD and I needed an inexpensive solution for faster boot times.

It will be given to someone else (minus the 1TB drive, which I use for back ups) after I play around with it a little. The Kingston was also a relatively good deal making a great bargain overall imo.

Hey /tpg/ I'm about to place an order for a P70 with E3-1505M v5 (Xeon 2.7GHz Quad core) and Quadro M4000M. I got the bare minimum on RAM/SSD since I figure I can install those myself for cheap. I plan to use this mainly for heavy video editing and After Effects.

Question: 1) any known issues with the P70? Is it solid and reliable? I'll be using this to earn my living so it needs to hold up. 2) Is this setup capable of handling heavy editing/VFX work well?

Plenty of 3rd party batteries are fine. I bought a few different ones to accompany my stock one for my x61 I took to japan for a few weeks... ended up just using all 4 batteries i had.

I have one x61 (using to post this) and two r61's (like them more than t61 because thicker & cooler temperature wise)

first like another anon said, upgrade the wireless card. if you get a triple antenna card, just hook up the first two antennas.

get a top end CPU for it because unless you're going Core 2 Extreme you are not paying more than 10, 12 bucks for a top end cpu. i have t9500 or t9300 in all mine. you will need a decent amount of thermal paste because you need to cover 2 chips.

Lastly if you haven't done it install middleton bios because not only do you need it for the wireless whitelist but it unlocks sata ii speeds which helps tons when you have a ssd.

If youre rich as fuck you can go to 51nb and get a x62 kit.

This, this! Get whitelist-less BIOS, then put a new battery and a Centrino 6205 or 6300 in it! I have the X61T with the 1400x1050 X60T's screen, almost same model as yours, and using half-height WLAN cards does wonders for heat and power consumption. All of the cards used in these models suck ass, just like this anon says. Expect 4-5 hours of battery on a genuine 8-cell if you're not stressing out the CPU constantly. I can get a lot of drawing/painting done on a single charge, and I know no tablet convertible better than the X60/X61 tablets to date.

>>57319770
X62 currently has no digitizer support. I had the same idea. Cannot get a top-end CPU because X-series have their processors soldered, not socketed. A higher-frequency one would overwhelm the tiny heatpipe quickly, anyhow.

>>
>>57324331
Tbh it's usually more cost effective to just buy a more expensive thinkpad with better innards than buy a shitty one and "mod" it, depending on how new/old the thinkpad is, you can change the monitor(resolution, matrix), you can change keyboard(backlit or not, the layout), you can change shitty clickpad for a trackpad for **40 series, you can change CPU on older models, don't think you can on newer ones, you can add extra ram, you can add SSD
Basically everything same you could do with other laptops just that the parts are more easily available to find online and you're more abled to change the parts without having to get fucked in the ass by manufacturers who make it near impossible to change the parts without breaking off chunks of plastic

I've got a X220t with the touchpad disabled in BIOS. I just never use the touchpad at all. Are there any useful things I could do with it instead of it just being there, unused?
>>
>>57324441
>sub 1000$ budget
You could get a newest T560 or something like that for that money(used also though)
People usually buy thinkpads because they're dirt cheap compared to other laptops with specs like these, since most thinkpads are offloaded from companies after they upgrade their hardware
T420 ant X220 are like 200$ max, maybe a little different depending on your location and the specifications on them, but they're still aged machines, never really looked into, but I think they should be like 5 years or more old, so if you have a higher budget, might as well buy a newer one(50 or 60 series(40 is shit) for example T550, T460, X250 etc, depending on what you need(screen size etc))
The main selling points are that when you buy used you get very good price for the specs, you get good specs, good build quality, good serviceability, trackpoint, good keyboard, basically everything is fucking good or great
>>
>>57324516
so basically you get a thinkpad because it's the best bang for buck, and when it comes time to "get a new laptop" you can just add something and it's basically good as new? I mean just in general computers don't really age that much, if not used for gaming
For laptops you can just slap an SSD instead of HDD and it's basically like a new computer, the problem with consumer laptops is that they always have some kind of shitty flaws and design failures as in they will shit the bed a year after their warranty ends, be it from overheating or the hinges on screen breaking off

Hey /tpg/
Pretty excited. I picked up an R61 for dirt cheap, $22. It boots to bios great so I've ordered a battery and HD tray to begin with.

First thing I'm going to do is install the Middleton bios. I know that'll boost me to 3gb Sata and allow other processors and up to 8gb ram.

Second I plan to boost the ram to around 4gb. 8gb is just ridiculously expensive for DDR2 and 4gb should be fine for most tasks.

Next will be a CPU swap from the T7300 in it to a T8300, this should be a SUBSTANTIAL boost in processing power. The T8300 is super cheap and does very well in single and dual core tasks. It only starts to really lag behind modern competition in tests using more than 2 cores.
A dual core is really all you need unless you're doing some serious work.

A usb 3.0 express card will fit my usb needs and I may get a PCI-e to Microsd adapter for the empty slot inside the computer to use as secondary drive.

Finally, I would consider an SSD with Windows 10, Lubuntu, and possibly an OSX version as well. I should be in for under $100 (not including the SSD) for a very solid little laptop.
The screen is the 1600x900, so not top tier but not shit (looking at you 720). The buttons are super clean and there's almost no signs of wear. And it does not have the shitty dedicated graphics.

First question,
How does OSX run on these thinkpads?
Second,
How are the batteries for the extreme Bay or whatever, worth the cost? The Mah on them don't seem to be too high...
Third,
Any other things I should be aware of with these laptops?
>>
Do I really need a SSD?

Hello, I bought a HDD caddy to replace my optical bay with, and I put an SSD in it. When booting up my computer, after I input my password it's just a blue screen with the mouse pointer, no icons or taskbar or anything. Could anyone help identify the problem?

Also, I want to migrate my HDD's contents to the SSD, effectively replacing my HDD. The point is to boot from SSD and have it be my main drive so everything is faster, is that doable without any CD's or anything like it?

I can't replace my HDD with SSD in the HDD's original slot, as the 7mm SSD is too small to fit properly. I've ordered a 7mm to 9.5mm adapter for that and I'm still waiting on it. I'll switch them once it arrives, but I'm impatient so I want to migrate everything now so I can use it for school asap.

Thank you.

/tpg/ is there any way to immidiatelly from photos know if x200s is 1280x800 or 1440x900?
>>
>>57339206
You can crop the screen out of the photo and count the pixels
>>
>>57339206
yes. low res ones have a line on the lid
>>
>>57339242
Than you very much!
>>
>>57331211
What about Dell Latitude 3000 series?
>>
>>57339242
If I may, actually one more thing: even though some models of x200s were shipped with 32-bit systems, on all you can install 64-bit systems, and have more than 3GB of memory, right?
>>
>>57339206
Higher res has no webcam and lid is thinner
But 900p is TN
>>
>>57339339
You can have 8 gigs of memory total 4+4 special 2Rx8 DIMMs.
>>
Would a T520 be a good buy right now, or just the T420s?
>>
>>57339427
The T520 would be a lot heavier device than the t420s. IMO you should go for the t420s as long as you don't need the 'better' hardware inside of a t520.

>>57339427
elitebook 8470p
>>
>>57339541
I don't really need the better hardware in the T520, I was just leaning towards it because it seemed easier to add an FHD screen since you don't need to buy a modkit from some guy on a forum. If I'm wrong about the T420 in terms of upgrading the screen I'd be glad to know though.
>>
>>57339631
The t420 screen is also quite easy to upgrade - but afaik you'll need a kit.
There are also kits for the t420s but i don't really know someone who had upgraded the screen on his machine so I can't say how much of an act it is

What are /tpg/'s thoughts on getting an 11.6 Yoga (No. 711730346893) for light audio recording (audacity) and using it as a sketchpad?

I'm not (too) prejudiced towards tablets but
getting a Thinkpad seems to have greater benefits with the sole caveat in comparison to any similarly priced tablet being increased weight and bulk which doesn't offend me at all, still I'd like hear your opinions on whether or not I should consider a different model since I'm pretty set towards Thinkpads in general..
>>
>>57339746
garbage
>>
>>57339708
T420s kits work flawlessly, but T420 kits are hit and Miss. Depends on power supply, CPU and CPU load. Both are hard to get by. You have to get them through the forums tho.
>>
Drawfag here. Is the X1 yoga any good?
>>
>>57339952
No. Get Microsoft Surface.
>>
>>57339746
I have a yoga 13, it's garbo hinges break, keyboard sucks, gimmicky as fuck trackpad also sucks
>>
>>57340387
>>57339767
I think I shall look for an X230T unless anyone can recommend anything worthwhile at a smaller size, thanks for the replies so far.

Well, tells us your use case dummy ...

X250, T460, T550, or T560? using it for web dev with a possible side for live streaming stuff ranging from programming to fighting games (anywhere from old to new)
>>
>>57340788
How much will you travel with it?
>>
>>57341233
everyday, but I don't care if it's heavy.
>>
Can I live with the touchpad on the T440, or is a mouse a must, typical of most windows laptops?
>>
>>57341279
You will care about it. Even my (work) 15" MacBook Pro got annoying to carry every day. I'd get an X series, or maybe even a ThinkPad Yoga.
>>
>>57341529
You have the clit. It's better than the touchpad.
>>
>>57341539
model of x series?
>>
>>57341539
As someone who carried a 17" unibody pro and a fuckton of books near daily for 2 years, i can say that its a matter of opinion. All you need is a half decent bag.
>>
Looking to buy a T460. Is the i7 version really worth getting over the i5? The price gap is ridiculous where I'm from.
>>
>>57341604
I'd personally get x230t, but if you need power, x260. Do not touch x240!
>>
>>57341723
what's wrong with x240?
>>
Do 420's come with Bluetooth? Seems like a good buy just for watching vietnamese cartoons but don't want to use shitty laptop speakers and have an ok Bluetooth speaker.

Ive always read the X220 is better, why so?
>>
>>57341881

7 ro keyboard m8. get it anyways.
>>
>>57341881
Thats a fucking steal

Get it anon

Thats cheaper than an X220 would likely be
>>
>>57341881

>>
I just bought an x220 w/ ssd for $102.50 on eBay. Was that a good price?
>>
>>57342081
Very

Unless you got cucked with the non-IPS screen version
>>
>>57342081
not too bad if it came with extended battery, IPS, 8gb ram and charger.
>>
>>57342108
I don't see any mention of ips in the product description, so I'm assuming it's not. But then again neither is my desktop monitor or current laptop, so it doesn't really bother me. I don't know why I'd even need ips for a screen right in front of my face.

Anyway, it's definitely a huge improvement over my 9 lb celeron satellite w/ 40 min of battery life. I'm basically just getting this to view documents in class and type in the library.

Im confused lads

does the following mod

require that gay ass hardware mod flasher thing that you use to short out pins or something if i want to apply the patch to get the Fn keys to work?
>>
>>57342445
No

Thats only for BIOS hacking, EC flashing is all software

The touchpad on the --40s makes the clit shitty, though. Gotta replace it with the --50 touchpad to have a usable machine.
