Only definite way would be to take it to a good watchmaker and ask how much a service would be. I'd say don't be surprised if a full service ends up being $100-$200 or maybe more, depending on the movement.
>>
>>57322756
What? The watch costs $20 on eBay, used. How is this possible?
(Yes, it's mechanical)
>>
>>57322789
Spoilers: doing a full service is a good amount of work. Taking it apart, cleaning it, relubricating, etc. Might not be that much, but you'd have to take it to a watchmaker to know.

That said it's probably not worth servicing a $20 watch.

Why exactly do you guys hate co axial movements so much? So what if your service is slightly more expensive than normal, if you're only bringing your watch in every 8 years or so? I'm not meming, serious question.

Also still waiting on answers for this pls
>>57319083
>>
>>57323296
>Why exactly do you guys hate co axial movements so much?
From an engineering standpoint, they're are exceptional. Really, they are, no one dares doubt that fact or dispute it.The catch is, for the average consumer, or even watch enthusiast that doesn't take it 1000% seriously, then there's little difference between your bog standard Lever Escapement Chronometer movement, and your Co-axial Chronometer, they're both going to keep near perfect time.
>>
>>57323353
But a co axial will go for (at the very least) 5 years without a service, meanwhile a Rolex or JLC movement will start losing time around 4 years, and will have serious wear around 8.
Are they so disliked because only Omega can service them? Do they usually charge up the ass?
>>
>>57323296
The problem is that it has to be serviced every 2-3 years, rather than every 5-10.
>>
>>57323434
>But a co axial will go for (at the very least) 5 years without a service
And will cost significantly more to then service, mostly by the fact that less watchmakers will handle co-ax movements.
It's not that only Omega can service them, but Omega are very picky about watchmakers that are certified to service them.
>>
>>57323296

The really short version:

1) They are extremely difficult to service correctly because they were supposed to need lube but actually do and the slightest error in line amount or type and the movement will eat itself.

2) they offer no substantive improvement in accuracy vs a standard ETA 2892-A2

3) they are MUCH more sensitive to tolerances than a traditional escapement and are quite likely to eat themselves if anything goes wrong.

4) Omega implemented co-axial purely for marketing rather than horological reasons.
>>
>>57323538
>4) Omega implemented co-axial purely for marketing rather than horological reasons
Might be worth expanding a bit on that, considering the conversion of movements vs the design of new movements based around the co-axial system.
>>
>>57323569

When I get home I'll re-look up all the info on that. It's been a while so I don't remember the details off hand.
>>
>>57323538
But compare a seamaster 300 to a sub
The latter is cheaper to service, but is 3x as expensive.
>>
>>57323962

Sorry, but modern Omegas are totally unworthy of comparison to Rolex.
>>
>>57324133
And whys that?
>>
>>57324182

Because Rolex designs and manufacturers their watches to a MUCH higher quality standard than Omega does.

If you examine examples from.both companies up close side-by-side it becomes glaring my obvious just how much better Rolex quality is.

And I say that as someone who doesn't like modern Maxi-case Rolexes at all by the way.

>>57323569

Just to start here are a couple of good resources on the subject:

https://omegaforums.net/threads/to-co-axial-or-not-to-co-axial-or-is-it-a-case-of-back-to-the-future.27893/

http://watchmakingblog.com/2010/05/03/omega-co-axial-training/
>>
>>57324312
I don't disagree with you. I dislike Rolex but they're experts at what they do, with maybe only JLC, ALS and Patek being directly comperable.
A seamaster 300 is 80% the watch a sub is though, for like 30% of the price. I would say thats a damn good tradeoff.
>>
>>57324334

If the Seamaster is anything like the AT then it sure as hell isn't 80% of Roles quality.

I've handled an AT up close and the quality level is honestly a fucking joke for the price. The bracelets are especially bad.

I would love to take a SNK803 and throw a hadley roma leather strap onto it, but I don't want to have to deal with getting it serviced in a few years. I know it seems ridiculous for someone to feel this way, but I like to do things myself - cut my own hair, put my own PC together, change watch battery, etc

are there any similar watches with a beige face that don't look like dogshit?
alternatively, would taking a mass-produced mechanical watch like this to a watchmaker or jeweler even cost much to get the movement regulated? or would it outweigh the initial cost from purchasing it ( watch costs $50, but service costs $80 or something like that?)

Most Seiko 5 are never serviced because servicing them is more expensive than buying a new one.

If you never plan on servicing a mechanical watch you probably won't have a functional watch to pass down to your son in 70 years, but it should be ticking in like 20 years as it slowly grinds to dust on the inside. Similar to the fact that most modern cars can easily go 60-100+ thousand miles having never received an oil change. It's just once you've done that there's significant damage. But if you could buy cars for 50 dollars I'm sure everyone would be doing it.

Regulating it is something you can very easily do yourself if you want to experiment, and can help improve its timekeeping. Especially over the years because watches tend to run fast as the oil dissipates over the years and you're not servicing it.

A manager at my office managed to destroy the engine in her Mazda3 after 6 years of no oil changes and about 80,000 km (50k miles). You wish. It was the blue dialed co-axial and the case, dial, and especially bracelet quality were obviously inferior to a Seiko Brightz, much less a modern Rolex.

Modern Omega's are pleb-catchers where the money is spent on advertising and product placements rather than on the quality of the watches themselves.

He's right though.

It's just that most modern watch buyers don't have the slightest clue about, or give the slightest fuck about anything behind the dial.

They treat the watch being mechanical and having a "respectable" movement as pass/fail gates enabling them to buy the thing they think is pretty, not as something to actually be interested in.

Does seiko or any other manufacturer still make any simple quartz watches, without the seconds hand, and with no numerals or arabic, just time markers?
even better if no date too, but its okay if it does

please respond - I genuinely cannot find a watch like this besides the Orient Palmer, which I asked about in the last thread. I know that stuhrling makes one like this too but the "Swiss Quartz" stamped on the face makes me cringe considering its on a $50 dollar watch

Is the G Shock 5600 worth $50? It has the features I want in a form factor very close to the terrorist watch.

Well /wt/ here is my "Collection". Pretty modest and nothing to write home about. For those who can't tell it is a Vostok amphibia with a komandirskie watch face, some russian manual winding shit, and an Orient esteem. I want an everyday watch that has arabic numbers or something along those lines, not the dashes like the esteem. I will be wearing it to work etc etc. I already own two mechanicals and I want accuracy so I was thinking of going quartz, possibly the Citizen BM8180. Keeping it under $200, is there something I am obviously missing out on considering? I like the eco-drive because changing batteries is an annoyance when it does happen. Give me one reason why I shouldn't buy a Nomos with the swing system
>>
I've noticed that it's pretty common for US and Italian luxury goods companies to import cheap Chinese or Mexican labor to manufacture goods in their home country, so they can legitimately have the "Made in USA" or "Made in Italy" stampped on their products.

Do you guys think the Swiss do the same thing for their watches? What portion of super expensive "Swiss Made" timepieces do you guys think are made by dirt cheap Chinese labor?

Werke_Swing[1].jpg
71KB, 1024x693px
>>57347419
As far as I understand it, the "swing system" isn't actually anything new, the escapement is still the exact same as every other Swiss Lever, its just that they're producing all of the parts in house. Things like hairsprings are extremely hard to produce and are usually bought from one of the big suppliers in Switzerland, even if it's going to be paired up with a balance wheel made in house. For Nomos to be able to do that is really pretty impressive, but it isn't actually a benefit to you as a consumer. Unless you just want a watch that's REALLY made in house, then its cool.

North Seattle College, Watch Technology Institute. Sister school to Lititz. North Seattle has a much more relaxed feel compared to Lititz. If you really want to get down to it, I'd say you'll probably learn more/end up better trained at Lititz, but I don't know if I could have handled being stuck in fucking Lititz, Pennsylvania with that level of pressure for two years. North Seattle was honestly a really fun experience. Difficult, but very enjoyable.

>>57347903
When they say mechanical aptitude, they want you to have a good mental understanding of physical interactions. Stuff like "if this gear turns this direction, which direction will this gear five gears away be turning?" but of course much more complicated than that.
>>
>>57347785
I wound it 50 rotations as soon as I took it out of the box, thinking the ratcheting sound would stop when fully wound (it was probably already fully wound from being tossed about on its way here from Russia). Then I read that you are not supposed to wind it more than 25-30 times.
>>
>>57347903
in the essay just state for 5 pages that you really, REALLY want to be a watchmaker.

they just want to make sure you'll stick with the school, and the profession even when shit hits the fan.

really going out of your way isn't necessary. the teachers won't give a shit what you already know.
>>

>I don't know if I could have handled being stuck in fucking Lititz, Pennsylvania with that level of pressure for two years.
I'd heard that you couldn't miss class for any reason, but that sounds a bit far-fetched. Even top-tier universities permit missing class if you're seriously sick.

Nah, you're good. Automatics can't be overwound, or else the automatic system itself would be breaking mainsprings all the time. The mainspring doesn't lock against the wall of the barrel, it basically just slips along it, while still being pressed against it extremely tightly. This way, the watch can get up to a nice full wind, and then the mainspring will slip with any additional winding and stop at a new spot.
>>
>>57348020
>I'd heard that you couldn't miss class for any reason

not true. you just miss a day of work. the class is very independent. you can pretty much do whatever you want, as long as you meet the few deadlines assigned. we all learned at very different paces.

>Are the teachers there as big hardasses

YES. Don't know what you're doing? ask. Don't know the Rolex way to wipe your ass? ask.

Follow procedures. I cannot emphasis this enough. Don't do anything with 100% confidence.

what do you recommend for natos?
>>
>>57332985
yes I upgraded to a 5600 from a $15 digital casio and it was worth it desu

only problem with it is the adjust button is hard to press without a pen or something. luckily I dont have to adjust mine very often
>>
Whats your best chinkshit watch win? I was looking for something cheap that doesn't look too cheap
>>
>>57351858
The only one who wins when you buy chinkshit are the chinks.
>>
>>57351113
>>57351649
I wrote it more as guidelines, and it was pretty much an early draft written in about 2 hours and two beer bottles.

Better than nothing rally.

Feel free to expand on it with some ideas. I should have a slightly more updated and better written on my laptop at home and i should have some time to to work on it later on.
>>
>>57351858
For watches, don't go chink.

Buy a Seiko 5 SNK, these are cheap and quality automatics for 50 bucks.

The only good and durable chink watches are the Seagull. The 1963 reissues are absolutely gorgeous, although there are more around 300 bux.
>>
>>57347506

I'm just happy to see Nomos actually spend some money on engineering a new movement to make it extra thin and still have a micro-adjuster, rather than just spending the money on marketing or movement decoration.

It's pretty depressing how little improvement there has been in volume.produced movements (from an engineering perspective) since the Omega 65x/75x, ETA 2892-A2, Rolex 303x, and Seiko 52xx movements in the 1970s.
>>

For natos:

Timefactors
ToxicNATOs
Maratac
Cheap NATO Straps (only the premium ones)
>>
>>57352964

Omega 56x/75x, I meant.

There is no 'click' in this bezel. When you turn it there is different degree of friction depending of how you shape spring that is holding bezel. Took me 5 or 6 tries to get it right. It was too loose all the time. Scratched and bent bezel in process, fortunately it's not visible.

I'll answer these two together. Watchmaking, at least the simpler aspects, can definitely be taken up as a hobby. The biggest problem you'll run in to as a hobbyist is the money needed to get started. You can get a cleaning machine of questionable quality for pretty cheap on eBay, but a good quality one starts in the thousands. However, assuming you have the money, a school like the Northwest School of Horology is a great way to learn. It's not a super intensive way to learn, and you're probably not going to learn the really advanced stuff, but for a hobbyist it'd be more than enough. Learning just through trial and error and YouTube videos is also totally possible, but you have to be careful you're not teaching yourself bad techniques.

Not that anyone actually reads these threads anymore, but are there any watch winders out there that aren't unreliable shit?

My King Seiko Special is -1.2s total since October 18, and I would like to track the accuracy over an extended period, but would also like to not have to wear it every single day.

Just bought orient disk and love it. Already had bambino, so I'm turning into quite a fan of their watches. Can you guys recommend gold mechanical in similar price range of 200-300 euros? Seiko is ok as well.

They always end up either digging really deep into your wrist at just a normal strap adjustment or fucking floating high above because of strap tension.

The Seiko SARB lineup is nothing special, but its great for the price.

Its like a casual dress watch, but a good one. Its a quality one. However, its nothing that will stand out.

tldr; great daily watch, can't go wrong.

If you want something extra special, you will have to go to the Grand Seikos. Make sure you have at least 4 grand though, don't settle for the damn cheap GSs.

Anyone have a Rolex Explorer II (the old model 16570)?

I was wanting to get a non-shitter wrist watch to celebrate Trump's victory after I win a shitload of money betting on him, but I wasn't sure if a Rolex is worth the cost.

Really any luxury sports watches roughly between $2000-$5000 would be nice if you have recommendations.

Quartz watches are either digital or analog. Mechanical watches can be digital (rare) or analog.
>>
>>57363040
Digital in the context of watches means it displays time in digits. You can have a mechanical digital watch, but every quartz watch relies on digital electronics to count the oscillations.
