Upon recall on how small the wrists of the Japanese businessmen, i realized that the bracelet will likely not fit my wrist.

So /wt/ what do you think? The options are: mesh, blue/greenish leather, or bright brown/brown leather.

Everyone here seems to have dozens of watches. How do you afford and maintain / service them all.

Accuracy was still COSC, but the rotor had come loose so the watch had to wound manually.

Watches less than around $500. My entire collection cost less than half that speedmaster and all of them cost less than a service for it. Affording things isn't hard when you don't buy outside your means.

Well, i'll change my statement from the last thread, as i thought you were one of the newcomers that own SNK809's+another watch.

Some are fine with just a couple of watches, whether they are low or high end, and some would rather collect watches. In my case, i have a collection that varies through the months, with watches coming and going every couple of months, with some pieces permanently staying.

As we speak i have one watch to ship, two up for grabs, and 3 incoming. And as >>57205456 said, mine are mostly on the lower end and cheap to service (100$ +\-).

And with my work beaters, the Amphibia and Monster, having more or less a 8 to 10 year service interval i'm not too worried.

My household income is $190k, I can afford my 2 watches but I also have a budget.

Which is why I can't afford another watch, it would go beyond my discretionary spending budget.

Would owning a dozen $500 watches be better off in the long run?

I don't know, I am asking. I mean, that's $6k right there.

>Straps/Fitting
Depends on the watch, but usually the straps that come with the watch aren't too great. Swapping is piss easy, and replacement is easy to get.

Read the very neatly written guide.

>Care
Avoid exposing it to shock, magnetism (speakers/phones are a good source), and to water beyond what it's designed to withstand.

>Do the Chinese make anything decent in this price point?
Not really, at least it's better to get a Vostok/Seiko/Citizen/Orient over them.

>Willing to spend up to 100 it would mean I would get something notably better.
Not going to start recommending vintage to a clueless person.

Otherwise, Seiko 5 sports and or Seiko divers, Orient's divers, Vostok SE or the new Komandirskie automatic (K-34&K-35) to name a few.

>>57206005
>Would owning a dozen $500 watches be better off in the long run?
He meant that all of them will be lower than 500$, while most being 100~200$ with one or two being in the 500$ range.
>>
>>57205808
I make a bit past 40k before taxes. Spending a couple days pay on a watch is fine but two weeks or more is out of the question.
>>
Hey guys, i need help or opinions on my issue. My Seiko 4R36 movement loses 26-28 seconds while on my wrist, and when in my watch case dial up, gains 25-28 seconds. At the end of a 24 hour perood, I lose roughly 1-4 seconds a day(only if worn).. This gross difference bothers me, aside from the obvious, getting it regulated, what can I do to fix this? Or what's wrong?
>>
>>57206071

How old is the watch? When was it last serviced?

I ask because that discrepancy is occurring because the balance wheel is gaining a LOT of amplitude on the wrist vs dial up (meaning the balance wheel is rotating much further at each end of its swing, which takes longer, which makes the watch run slower).

To my knowledge no new or regularly serviced mechanical movement should have such a large difference in amplitude on vs off the wrist.

I would take that to a watchmaker to look at. I mean a real watchmaker, not a battery changing monkey in a mall.
>>
>>57205319

I'm mostly I to vintage watches, and I really enjoy finding diamonds in the rough and getting a great deal on them (knowing I'll have to pay for a service Bs a crystal) than buying expensive new watches.

For example, I got this Omega Speedmaster Mark 4.5 with the Lemania 5100 movement back in the bad old days of eBay on a listing that did not mention what movement the watch had for ~$400 USD.

After getting a deal like that, I've been perfectly happy to spend ~$500 every five years for a service.
>>
>>57206354

Jesus Christ the autocorrect turned that into word salad.

I'm mostly INTO vintage watches

For a service PLUS a crystal

RATHER than buying expensive new watches.
>>
>>57206354

What's the best place to find vintages
>>
>>57206288
Im not sure how old it is, I bought it second hand. But it isn't vintage, maybe up to three years max. It hasn't been regulated or srrviced either, unless the other owner tried to adjust the wheel himself.
>>
>>57206924
>I bought it second hand

It needs a service. I hope you got a good deal on it, because it sounds like the previous owner of the watch sold it because he didn't want to pay to have it serviced.
>>
>>57206537

Buying vintage watches is mostly about learning how to research information about vintage watches so that you can learn enough to become a fed dominating buyer unlikely to get scammed by the plethora of frankenwatches, redials, and overpriced abused examples.

Once you learn enough to be able to estimate the value of pieces you see online, then you can start bargain hunting on eBay, or (if you have the skill and risk tolerance), Yahoo! Japan Auctions using a proxy bidding service.

If you are patient and become good at infecting condition from pictures, then you can find some great deals.

Also Maplebro, i've yet to see your collection. So far i've seen 4 pieces (5100 speedy, 2 LM specials, and 52KS), anything else?

Forgot to mention, find the 3 flaws that are hidden via the semi clever photography.
>>
>>57207213

I've never posted a collection pic, I'll take one later since you asked.

I only keep one of the LM Specials running, the other is a parts spare at the moment (I swapped the serviced 5206 from the first one into the gray dialed 5206 I bought after so I have two good dials and cases but only one serviced 5206 movement ATM).

I've got the 52KS, the Lemania 5100 Speedmaster, a Brightz SDGM003 I haven't sold because I hope to one day get a steal on a 4s15 and swap it in, an SKX with a 6r15c and sapphire crystal, and a couple of G-Shock 5610s.

I'm probably going to sell the SKX at some point, haven't decided yet.

Guys, so what do you guys find appealing in divers watches? Outside of the water resistance and the use, aren't these a bit bulky? Is it the craftsmanship and engineering behind it?

im curious about them. I'm shopping for a daily and thought about buying an orient diver, but I dont't go diving so I literally wouldn't be getting use of that watch.

I like the aesthetic a lot, in addition to the convenience of being able to do a lot more with them without worry because of the water resistance and antimagnetic rating.

I have asked before.

Why wouldn't I buy through Chrono24?

My issue is that where i work/serve there is a very high humidity (65~90%), so anything that doesn't have above average water resistance will deteriorate very quickly.

The aesthetics of tool watch and the technology behind them are certainly a factor, but i require a watch that does just that and isn't a bulky resin brick.

Divers answer my need in terms of durability, and look splendid.

I've owned several cheap watches in the past few years and they all broke. Do I really have to get a $100+ watch for it to last a few years?
>>
>>57213136>>57213136
I have a chinkshit quartz watch that I never really wear anymore from back when I was testing the waters with watches that still runs fine. As far as automatics, Vostok's and Seiko 5's can be had for 40-60 burgerbucks and seem to last. Casio also has a number of well-made options at that price point or lower which are built to last (see Osama)
>>
>>57213265
Have you ever had Curren watches? They have some interesting models for good prices but they made for my last disappointment with chinkwatches.

Also I am done with mechanical. It's just a burden and I'd rather have calendar features if I can get them.
>>
>>57213293
I've never bought a curren. I do have a Sinobi though that has a working calendar function. I haven't actually checked if it functions correctly with different months being different lengths though.

Casio has some really cheap digital watches with calendar functions if digital is okay with you.
>>
>>57213136
No, I've had timex expeditions and casio's last for years. Spending more than $100 dollars on a watch in 2016 is silly. A watch should be a a utility. If it costs more than $100 its jewelry. You might as well be buying diamonds

The 5106 just doesn't speak to me the way the 52xx does, and it being a white-ish dial means I almost always end up wearing the KS Special instead of it.

I am thinking of selling it to make room for another 52xx or a 5146 or a 4s15 if I get the right deal.

I'm on somewhat of the same boat, as i'm looking for a different 52XX to replace my LM special as it doesn't quite speak to me anymore. Or perhaps a 5740C-8000 instead.

Please do enjoy paying $3,000 for a watch specced to run between -10s and +15s a day, that also comes in a mono block case so you cannot regulate it yourself or have it regulated professionally without spending a fortune and voiding your warranty.

Sure they do, but that's not even the main point. If the MM300 had a case back you could just regulate it or have it regulated and then re-pressure test it.

Selling a watch with an in adjusted movement in a monoblock case, however, is idiotic.

I have another question...

I'm new to watches and got an SNK809. Two weeks later I drop it (3 feet) and now it gains 2 minutes a day.

What are the most rugged watches under 500 dollars? I mean watches that could be dropped and that could take the occasional whack on the corner of something.

I also have a Vostok Komandirskie, the watch already took a few shocks but it's still running perfectly fine (+1s/day). So price doesn't necessary mean robustness, and anyway I don't have the budget for a Damasko.

The SKX uses the same movement as the Seiko 5. The only differences are on the exterior, higher WR and thicker, better quality hardlex crystal. (Along with other features)

Amphibia's have movements that are more shockproof than the 7S26, and can handwind. They can be regulated to keep time well if not better, and the overall modding aspect is more accessible&cheaper. Both of the Amphibia's pictured were regulated to do a very steady +5 seconds per day.

The only disadvantages are the longer shipping time, out of the box timekeeping is very random (yet easy to regulate), and much less tighter QC.

A Jeweller's reputation is everything.
Even more so when dealing with watches. So to do so would be extremely stupid for the Jeweller.

If the jeweller is Rolex authorised, then he's legit. If you have any doubts, take it to a different jeweller to get it serviced next time, if there's something off, more than what should be in a regular service, they're sure to mention it.

But frankly I just think you're being a little too paranoid.

You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. Btw that collection is stunning, that strela is beautiful. Do you ever wear them or do you just keep them as collection pieces?
Imo the downside of vintage soviet watches is that they don't make good daily beaters, except for amphibias.
>>
>>57220942
They are actually quite easy to get for cheap, at least on eBay from Europe.
But that model in particular doesn't pop out very frequently.
Anyway there is no reason for owning an elektronika unless you really like its Soviet special snowflake design and Cyrillic dial.
It's objectively inferior to any cheap digital Casio watch, which they actually wanted to copy using reverse engineering and it also doesn't have water resistance.
But it's an interesting piece anyway, I liked the Russian melodies you could set as for the alarm.

I think it's 100% real and not some random redial since I've seen it pop out in different watch forums.
I got it for 20€ +7€ fpr the shipping from Hungary since the seller accepted my offer.
It's a nice watch for those poorfags who can't afford a Nomos but like the Bauhaus dial like myself.
Let's see how it performs and if I manage to regulate it to get a decent accuracy because I'm quite autistic about accuracy. If I don't I will just resell it like I've done with all my previous slavshit.
As you can see it uses a Zim movement but this is apparently common since I believe they were made in the same factory. The seller mentioned this movement is an Omega license, maybe some anons can confirm if that is bullshit.

I'm quite surprised that the seller accepted mine since the listing had like 15 followers. It's quite impressive no one offered more money than me or just clicked on the "buy it know" for 29€ + shipping.
Maybe the reason is that the seller is selling a similar watch in an even better shape on an auction that finishes tomorrow. It's currently going for just 9€ I believe but I preferred the more Bauhaus style numerals on mine.
Pic related the watch that I'm talking about, maybe you are interested.

My girlfriend used to ask me for the time a lot, even though she has a smartphone. Picking up on the fact that it was seemingly more convenient for her to ask a watch-wearer for the time rather than just check her phone, I bought her a Seiko 5 for Christmas. For the first few months she was always commenting on how easy it was to check the time versus pulling out the smartphone from a bag or pocket. Having a watch actually contributed to her forgetting/losing her phone a few times, since she wasn't keeping tabs on it as often as she would had it still functioned as an electronic pocket watch.

For me, that was enough proof that watches will always be more convenient and useful than phones. Plus if you are not constantly pulling your phone out to check the time, you reduce your chances of breaking it. If only others would realize this.

If the movement uses regulating pins, there can be a difference in rate between dial up and dial down based on if those pins are parallel or not. If the movement uses a free-sprung balance, then there shouldn't be a difference. However, there generally still ends up being a small difference between the two in most watches.
>>
>>57231604
35mm is small but definitely wearable. Definitely post some pics when it arrives.
The numerals getting smaller towards the bottom are a subtle touch that makes the relatively empty dial a bit more interesting. Also, no eaten 6 from the seconds subdial.

the movement (the parts he could swap without you knowing) are not worth all that much, it's the case and the band and the face and all the shit you can see that make up the bulk of the 16k

swapping out some internal part with another part that would work and not get him found out might make him like 100 bucks

not worth ending your store and livelihood over

The Flieger is currently being restaured and looks like picture related except the original bottom button is gone and the nickel have mostly been rubbed off over time so it looks like a brass watch with nickel highlights.

I am at the office at the moment doing some late evening programming/shitposting so I do not have pictures at the moment. The pictures I have are pretty blurry and it looked very grimy before I sent it to service, when it comes back I will likely post several pictures. I need to buy a nato for it because the pins on the side (whatever you call them) are permanent and can't be moved.

It has not been to service since the 60s-70s or something. My father did use it as his daily watch for a few decades, he likely never knew how rare these things are.

My father also have a 100 year old (maybe older, maybe younger) silver Omega pocket watch with roman numerals that I hope to inherit. The perks of coming from a upper middle class family. I hope take good care of these family heirlooms, they tell cool stories about their lives and what they did.

>>
>>57233364

they want a general idea, "it's 3:30"

sometimes I will say "it's 2mins after 6 or something like that"

depends on how it flows verbally imo and if the person looks to be in a rush and might give a fuck about 2 mins
>>
>>57233391
well, it's not a good deal for a quartz chrono.
the movement costs fuck all, clearly the designer didn't spend more than 30 seconds on drawing it, and the materials are probably alright at best (mineral crystal...)
also what the hell i just realised that's a used watch.

>>57233441

the chronograph doesn't change accuracy. but yes quartz is more accurate.
it's also way cheaper than a good mechanical movement, especially a mechanical chronograph.

>i don't get the mechanical meme, is keeping your watch wound and set and sent off for service every few years less trouble than a 5min battery swap every 6 years or so?

It's just the whole analog thing to it. Quartz are based on vibrations from electrical currents while mechanical has a certain finesse, engineering and workmanship to it beyond what Quartz have.

>>57233452
Yes, just how flac has better sound quality than a vinyl. But for example a vinyl has a whole other dimension to it, the artwork and the whole ritual of putting the needle in place or blowing the dust of a piece of music you have not listened to for a while.

Mechanical watches is an appreciation for the sublime and subtile. An appreciation for ingenuity and workmanship in getting these wheels and cogs to show time accurately. The fine details and hard work that goes into the design and construction of these time pieces. Quartz time pieces are more accurate, but not as demanding when it comes to ingenuity because it can be comparatively simple mechanisms.

It should be some kind of a Poljot model from early nineties since it doesn't have a made in USSR or a made in Russia written down there. Positional variance: generally better, but it all goes out the window if the poise is off or the hairspring isn't perfectly flat and round.
Amplitude: no real difference, honestly.
Isochronism: generally noticeably better, even if the hairspring isn't perfect. The hairspring actually bounces between the regulating pins when everything is properly adjusted, and as amplitude changes it changes the amount of time the hairspring spends against one pin, the other, or in between the two. Free-sprung balances pretty much totally get rid of that.

All in all though, companies are capable of making balances with regulating pins that are extremely accurate without too much trouble these days. The graduation watch I got from my school has a Tudor modified 7751 and it is shockingly accurate. Its only gained 20 seconds in the last month and a half or so. That being said, isochronism is still a problem and it's only that accurate if I wear it every day to keep it wound.
