Get IEMs. They are just as good and better than ANC headphones in terms of noise isolation and sound quality.
Namely, an Etymotic in your budget.

>>57201829
Shure easily. I don't get the interest in the Fostex headphones at all.
>>
>>57202369
Do you think the shure's 'lack' anything? I get the impression that they may lack in the bass. Is it suitable for some gaming every now and then aswell? And finally, would it be better to go for an open headphone instead of closed (and if so, which one).
>>
>>57202420
I don't think the Shure's particularly lack in anything sound wise. Their bass is fine, as long as you get a seal and unlike the Fostex headphones, their response is quite even and neutral. The more neutral response makes bass stand out less. Build quality of the Shures might be a weak area. Their nearest competitor is the MDR-7056 and Sennheiser HD 280 Pro.
>>
>>57202420
>>57202472
And to add, games are just fine. They don't impose any specific requirements for headphones any more than other listening does.

Open back can be preferred if you don't need isolation. It's subjective and use case dependent. If your computer or room/house is noisy, I'd get closed back. If not, I personally like the open back design more but that's just me.
>>
>>57202494
Thanks, you've been most helpful! I'll probably pick up the Shure's and test them for a few days. Which open back headphone around the same price range (or a bit above, that's fine) would you prefer?
>>
>>57202515
HD 558 as it's fairly neutral, easy to drive and almost universally comfortable unless your ears are very large.

Slight V-shape with good low end kick but no boomyness

Uses the Shure MMCX cable connector type so unless the actual IEM itself dies [which is rare] you can just replace the cable for like 10 bucks.

JVC HA-RX700

Basically i fucking love the JVC HA-RX700, its comfy as fuck and honestly i don't have much experience with sound
and it was the best i had yet so it sounds good to me. I had them for about 6 years and they are still strong but
the little plastic part that connects the cups to the headband broke which was my fault and the wire now hangs and i am afraid that they might
go out suddenly so i need a backup, i would probably buy another pair of those but i am just wondering if anyone thinks that
with about 100 dollars i can get something better and as comfy as those, the most important point is comfyness though, i have to be able to wear them from
the time i wake up to when i go to bed and so far the ha-rx700 was amazing at that.

Dumb question, but I need to know.

Where is the bass stronger, SteelSeries Flux (which I have rn) or Sennheiser HD598?

I heard the bass is weak on the Senns, so I am wondering if it's even weaker than on my current ones.

Also if I were to listen at volume 10-15 on the Sennheisers, would the leak be actually that noticeable? Louder volumes tend to hurt my ears.

No opinions please, just a concrete, precise answer.

Random shit

I need three things
Something to use while I work out
Something with good audio/headset for ps4/skyping/discord
Something with good audio for listening to music/watching movies

The only thing I’ve found so far that seems to be the best combination of all three (although I might need to get something else for the gym, dont want to fuck these up) is the HyperX Cloud II. People claim online that it can do 7.1 (evidently it’s not really 7.1 but whatever), even on the ps4. I want to make the investment in good headphones for these three things, so will I be really disappointed in the Cloud IIs for audio? Will it get the job done?

Not really. Clouds are really good sounding. The 7.1 surround on the cloud II's sucks though.

Just get the originals, some 8 dollar velour pads from the old takstar hi2050s or some hm5 velours and you've got a more comfortable cheaper cloud 2. If you want virtual 7.1 you can use any Usb dongle that does Dolby virtual. They're not headphone specific

The original clouds can be had for under 70 USD on gearbest or Amazon I think
>>
>>57211748
Yes you were meme'd. Bad comfort, sloppy bass and shithouse highs. M40x and hm5 pads would be miles better.

Depends on how you play back and what you play back. Using a separate resampler with your media player(like SoX with foobar2000) or another audio API entirely(like ASIO, WASAPI) bypasses those issues. It also depends on whether this shit is patched from Win 10 by now.

Nevertheless that may not even be audible but it's still an issue which I'd rather try fixing.

>>57217710
Distortion? Equalizer is used to get rid of frequency response issues and it works exceptionally well with headphones which are mostly minimum phase devices. Hardware EQ will add some non-linear distortion so for that reason as well as for more powerful results it's best to use a high quality software parametric equalizer to do the job. You can keep thinking in "upgrades" as long as you want but without the use of EQ, you'll never be able to get an ideal response - whatever that might be in your case. It can't fix everything but when properly used it makes most fr problems trivial.
>>
>>57217792
You can use it. It's not for me. I keep analogue singles analogue.
>>
>>57217837
>I keep analogue singles analogue.
That is unrelated to equalization.

My original advice still stands. Find out what you like and dislike about the K702 and move on from there. Check measurements, audition headphones which seem interesting and decide.

You've got a couple nice options in this price range.

- Brainwavz HM5/NVX XPT-100 [Essentually identical. Get whatever is cheaper]
Most comfortable stock headphones in your budget. Sound very good too. Neutral and great soundstage.
I'd say those are by far your best bet.

A couple MDRs could work.
- MDR-V6 arent completely neutral but honestly I still think they sound very good.
- MDR-7506 are more neutral. Sound good. Reference grade studio monitoring headphones.
Though MDRs dont have the best comfort they sound nice.

Takstar Pro 80 [now sold as ISK HP2011 on aliexpress for ~50 usd]
Theyre pretty cheap now but sound on par with ~100 dollar equivalents. Slap any nice HM5 pads on them and youve got a really nice solid set of cans. Neutralish with good bass extension.

Quite a few Shure headphones would fit too.

ATH-M40x with HM5 pads could also do well. Theyre not neutral but the bass isnt overly present and doesnt down much out. You can still be an 'audiophile' and enjoy some nice bass. Built well

You don't need one, especially for the M6.

Portable amps are weird because, a lot of the time, they have way more power for what they are made to power with a form factor not really fit for desktop use (ex battery powered, shape) and also a general inconvenience to have to carry another device, which is a detriment for portability. They don't magically make a headphone sound better either.

Not much. There are measurements scattered around the internet. Seeko(Korean website) has them, Goldenears has some, Innerfidelity has some, NwAvGuy's blog has a few, Archimago's blog, Superbestaudiofriends/Head-Fi, Stereophile, audio hobbyist sites/communities/blogs etc.

Oh yeah the controller. One anon used his HD 800s from DS4. Said it worked fine. While relatively insensitive high impedance headphones aren't really guaranteed to work perfectly from low powered sources like a controller, there's nothing really bad about it. Just a quiet output level.

I feel if I had equipment i'd make a ton of money making real measurements for dacs, amps on youtube
why nobody does that?
personally i'm searching for dac and after reading a few reviews I have no idea what is what
read a few nwavguy measurements, but what he measured is too old or not sold anymore
>>
>>57230625
For a lot of measurements all you need is a decent audio output and input, some software and know how. Cables too but those are cheap and easy to get your hands on. A high quality sound card is capable of measuring most gear and doing the important bits which are of interest for buyers like distortion(harmonic and IMD), SNR, frequency response, crosstalk and performance to different loads(both real world and synthetic). You can measure/calculate output impedance with a multimeter, some wire and a resistor. Audio analyzers like Prism dScope III are a step above this and not something hobbyists fiddle with.
>>
>>57230846
you also need a supply of dacs and amps to measure
that's the hard part I think that stops most people, would be nice if people measured their own stuff
but what we get is praising dacs for $1-10k or being vague as much as possible
>>
>>57230625
>why
While there is an audience for it, going too technical about audio isn't for everyone. Being ambiguous/subjective over some things is what sells and also what a lot of people are looking for. The consumer audio market isn't really competing with performance figures anyway. Everyone can review a product but to conduct measurements and being able to analyze what was measured requires some knowledge on the subject, from both the author and the reader/viewer. I always thought the majority of people reviewing audio gear does their readers a disservice by only talking about the sound and not measuring it.

Thankfully, as far as audio DA-converters on the market go, most popular designs are competent and something you can often pick up by mere looks and features alone. Amplifiers are a bit more varied and also have a direct correlation to the load performance(unlike the converter), which makes them more important in some respects.

>>57230916
Yes and I don't think many manufacturers would be willing to provide samples to measure because they may not be confident about the product and the market they target for doesn't care. Publications like Stereophile have a reputation and a long standing relationship with audio companies and they also provide(hilariously awful) subjective and often very positive thoughts about the products they review along with measurements, which are conducted by another person.

Many audio reviews are vague and only discuss subjectively perceived sound and not the actual performance of the hardware. You won't hear if the second harmonic is 60 or 90 dB below fundamental but you can definitely measure it. You also don't know about stuff like output impedance unless you understand how it works, have suitable load to try it out, A/B and guestimate the results instead of just doing a simple measurement to know what it's going on.

All in all, sighted listening of amplifiers and especially DA-converter is absolutely worthless.
>>
Alright
so flat out with it: the ISK HP2010/TAKSTAR HI2050 being any decent is a meme.

I've compared them with a lot of budget headphones, in and out, closed and open, ranging from fucking superflux 681's to an array of high quality sound editor and producer cans at friends and studios, and my god what in the fuck is this shit supposed to be?
The only people who I would even think these would be suited for are people who live in a cave with a speaker at each corner, the ISK HP2010/TAKSTAR HI2050 generously emulate the echo and "what year is it" experience of living in a cave, and now that I re-look at the more positive review videos, I can make resemblances of people living in makeshift caves (parents basements) howling on about sticks and stones and "takstar will rok ur earlobes", vibrating your insides as it stimulates the sweet sweet melody of a man bashing a wall with a cudgel.

1/10 would bring back in time to not scare cavemen away with, makes minecraft sound very realistic

hello anons, i need desperate advice.

i'm just getting into the audiophile game, just bought a pair of akg553 pro's. my issue is that my laptops sound card is actually complete garbage and im worried it won't do these headphones justice at all.

i'm currently using shitty 40$ sony headphones while i wait for the akgs in the mail, but i just constantly hear static and interference from my laptop. my phone is fine so it's not the headphones.

so here are my questions:
1.is it even worth it to get a usb amp thing
2.my budget is probably 40$ max. i'm poor af
3. are there any quality diy amp kits
4.whats the difference between dac/amps
5. should i wait for the headphones to come into the mail before buying one

background:
low budget

anything must be better than my laptop atm

i listen to a lot of different kinds of music, mostly indie and classical though

i'm looking to be able to adjust things like bass and treble

i'll be posting this on /mu/ and /g/ so i apologize for anyone noticing double posting.

There are a lot of diy amp kits, but I don't know if they're good. There probably some that are.
>4.whats the difference between dac/amps
Dac's convert the digital signal to analog and remove any static or interference
>5. should i wait for the headphones to come into the mail before buying one
If you have static and it bothers you, then you might as well get a dac. You could see if it gets loud enough and if it doesn't then get an amp as well.

Take mixed reviews with a grain of salt. Remember that people are who are dissatisfied are like an order of magnitude more likely to leave feedback than people who are satisfied, and that most people can't remove their subjective opinions on various FR curves from a review.

I also read "mixed reviews" about the sound of the stock Fostex T50RP MKIII (the only planar magnetic cheaper than the HE-400, basically) but I can comfortably say I prefer them in almost every way to the AKG K702 I had previously.

If you want to try a planar magnetic, maybe give them a try. At like $150 US they're definitely worth it.
>>
>>57242513
I like them. They're a pretty impressive earbud compared to Apple Earpods and their older earbuds for dirt cheap. I wouldnt recommend listening to them without filters. They work great for just about any genre really except for songs that rely on sub bass which is non existent on the Monks. They're my emergency backup to my JVC's currently but they still sound great for the price. The only think I regret about my pairs is not getting the EX pack for the extra accesories but the Massdrop Reds do look nice.

Software EQ is the best way to do it. Hardware EQ is limited and components alway add noise and distortion. And there's nothing wrong with EQ as long as you understand what you are doing and use a high quality parametric equalizer. Multi band EQ which is found from many media players is very crude and some implementations do more harm than good.

Honestly if you are interested in getting the best sound from headphones, you should learn how to EQ and do it. There really isn't a downside.

>>57241574

>>
>>57243819
Except the problem here are the headphones themselves. Each pair of headphones has more or less colored response. The only way to fix that is through a proper use of parametric equalizer by creating filters that null the peaks and dips in the response. The end result, if properly done, is much closer to a neutral response than any pair of headphones alone can do. Of course you can EQ by preference too if you don't care about fidelity and here EQ achieves the same thing as changing headphones do: changing the sound signature.

Hey /hpg/ looking for buying advice. I posted in the previous thread here >>57187189. Unfortunately I did not see the response until now. I appreciate the response but have a few questions.
In regards to them not being neutral, since I cannot listen to them in person I am simply going off of other people's reviews. I am using theheadphoneslist's CIEM reviews list as a reference. Is this an okay source?
For the DAC, I thought it would make the music sound better. I understand most likely I can not hear the difference, but as I said I have the money and am willing to pay for any chance. I really appreciate my music.
In terms of isolation I understand acrylic is weak, but all the models I referenced are silicone. Thank you for telling me about deep fit CIEMs. I will request that when I order.
Thank you very much for your help. Any other advice or model suggestions are deeply appreciated.
>>

>>

Pretty good deal deal, just get a replacement headband.

>$ 160.51
Oh.
>>
>>57244826
For those parts that isn't even a half bad deal if you need them. Official ones are pricey. Headband padding, ear pads, cable and the drivers are still usable and cost a hefty amount new. And I prefer the HD 650 cable and headband over HD 600 ones so for people with HD 600, they could be "upgraded".

>>57244991
I think the response you got was pretty much on point. Best neutrality and highest isolation is achieved at a different price point and not from custom in-ears.

DA-conversion is simple and for some reason it has become a part of audio discussion where many think their gear as a simplified concept DAC+amp+headphones. I never really got the inclusion of the DAC there. Most modern converters achieve performance well beyond human hearing and you shouldn't need to worry about it unless there are some audible problems going on. It either disappears from the signal path by being transparent or alters the signal audibly in which case you should probably invest into a better one. I got a discrete DA-converter for peace of mind. Are those CIEMs for home use, portable or both?

>I am using theheadphoneslist's CIEM reviews list as a reference. Is this an okay source?
Take them as a grain of salt as far as description of sound goes.

>>57245132
They would be for both home and portable use. Mind if I ask what DAC you have? I was planning on using a DAC with my android phone and linux computer.
Also if I am using deep fit silicone will that really not give good isolation. I have heard an (internet) famous musician describe using reference CIEMs at his shows and not being able to hear his crowd screaming. I figured they were pretty good.
>>
>>57245183
>I was planning on using a DAC with my android phone

>>
>>57245183
I have multiple because nearly every modern audio device has one but the one I use at home for headphones is the ODAC. I have Objective 2 + ODAC combo unit. For portable use I just have my phone(S7 Edge) as it has a great audio output already.

>deep fit silicone
No personal experience but should be lot better than acrylic molds. Not sure if they reach the isolation of canalphones like Etymotics.
>>

>>
>>57245270
>So you think if I am using a note 4 I will not need a DAC?
Won't be needed. If it's noisy or if you hear interference of some kind consider getting a discrete DA-converter to bypass that. Better yet get a DAP for portable use if you don't object to another device to play audio with.
>>
>>57245325
Any chance you could recommend a DAP?

What do you guys use/recommend as a mic solution for a DT770? I'm really close to getting a pair of those, but I just can't really find anything I like to use as a mic. A ModMic seems a bit too expensive, and dealing with extra wires is exactly not what I want, I can't use a BoomPro because it doesn't have a removable cable, a desk mic seems way too overkill and expensive, and a clip-on mic like that popular Zalman one seems way too cheap, cumbersome and annoying.

clip off the 'headband' part
3m adhesive the flat bit to the side of your 770
and then zip tie to cable.
ezpz

youre still gonna have to deal with 'two cables' no matter the solution unless you stick a bluetooth transmitter to the side of your cans

zip ties work [or heatshrink if you can get it over the termination]

that said desk mics are cheap, non intrusive and sound miles better.
>>
>>57245822
>that said desk mics are cheap, non intrusive and sound miles better.
Is there any pastebin, guide or whatever with information about mics? I'm willing to get a desk one, but most of the ones I see are either really cheap shit or expensive ones that I have no real use for. I think I would still prefer a headset-like mic, just so I don't have to worry about it picking up sounds that aren't my voice, but if there's any decent desk one for around $20-$30, I'd try it out. Otherwise I'd rather just get a ModMic if it goes on sale next month or whatever.

Depends on what you want but I'd say hardly as M2's battery life is significantly worse. That and it seems to have a bit more noise than the Plenue D. You do get a nicer screen, more output power, ability to play back more obscure formats like DSD and more DSP options.

I've had SE215 I enjoyed but its been a decade since I've had those and I forgot what drew me to them. I'm a huge fan of comply tips but I'm tired of paying for new tips all the time. Do CIEMs give similar benefits as comply tips, i.e. more snug thus better sound, less fatigue, louder etc.?
