Fedora for workstations:
- It just works for me.
- Sane defaults.
- Repos are up-to-date and well maintained.

CentOS on servers. For some purposes FreeBSD/OpenBSD.

I don't have a favorite because linux in general is awful. I use debian for my desktop because it's the least worst. OpenBSD/FreeBSD for server and embedded stuff.
>>
>>57178533
Debian has failed on me, X breaks whenever I use chromium and other cancerous programs that are now using opengl on its interface. I even switched to sid, now the screen goes completely black after a while, no chance of switching to other tty. Well I guess Debian is good only for servers on my case.

Ubuntu is partner with Microsoft, so an alternative to it would be nice to stay away from the botnet.

Fedora is a potential pick, any other suggestions?

Don't care about the ubuntu/debian security update "problems" at all, it doesn't concern me I don't do anything important or shady on my computer, I just like it to work

I don't get down and dirty like some of you cowboys and any shortcomings of this distro for real pros don't bother me

Slackware. No systemd, and I happen to agree with the design principles of Slack's "Benevolent Dictator." Community-driven distros are messy and bloated as fuck, often succumbing to feature creep and eye candy.

I don't mind manually resolving dependencies. If you can't do this shit, you shouldn't be messing with GNU/Linux in the first place. Windows and OS/X exist specifically for people who don't want to tweak anything under the hood, and want an OS that "just werks" out of the box.

Mint is an option. Haven't used it, but people seem to like it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>57180539
a) if you do a full install, you get a /lot/ of useful software with all the dependencies already present. this includes two major DEs, a handful of smaller WMs, several different options for office suites, media players, text editors, development tools for literally every single language imaginable, a /lot/ of drivers, even for museum exhibits, etc.

b) a number of third-party packagers for Slackware include many build dependencies in their binaries. for example, AlienBOB's ffmpeg package includes most of the two dozen optional build dependencies except for the non-free ones, and he offers a separate package with those included in his "restricted" repo. and if that doesn't work for you, you can just make your own configuration, save it as a queue, and have it automatically process whenever there is an update.

c) there are unofficial package managers that perform automatic dependency resolution

Since its inception, Debian has been governed by communist/progressive ideology. The devs wrote a fucking manifesto before they even started working on their POS distro. They call themselves the "universal" OS - one world OS that is all-inclusive and all-encompassing - clearly the choice of the single-party state that progressives are trying to establish in the western developed world.

>>57181983
Ideology and culture has a profound deep impact on how a software project turns out. Software is made and used by people. FOSS especially is community-driven. When you have a community of techno-novices shilling for a foreign tech not-quite-billionaire, you get Ubuntu. When you have a community based on professional enterprise users, you get Red Hat/Fedora/CentOS. When you have a community based on autistic levels of faggotry, you get Arch. When you have a community based on globalist socialist ideology, you get Debian.

If you've got "museum exhibit" computers, Linux is not really the best option available. Most distros don't support anything older than the Pentium Pro (Gentoo excepted). You're better off with NetBSD if your running truly ancient shit.

Gentoo is a close 2nd.
Slackware is nice too, and gives a nice classic UNIX feel. Fits right in with my Solaris, BSD, and IRIX boxes.

When it comes to binary distros, Debian is my go-to. It just works and isn't loaded with shit.
Alpine is also good, as it's very lightweight and takes like a minute to install.
>>
I've worked with Slackware, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian and Ubuntu so far and right now I'm running Ubuntu. It's easy to install and to tailor to my needs. So why should I experiment with other distros?

I've been installing and running Linux since 1994, and no, it wasn't my fault.

Jack, is that you? How many years has it been?

I use Gentoo, I like its flexibility at the level of customising compilation.

Arch has a very good balance between bleeding edge and stability that you dont get in debian. You either get 1 or the other. AUR is difrent from adding a repo (you can do that in arch too). And pacman is comparable to apt too.
They are both good distros with difrent use cases.

Ubuntu for sure. Massive 3rd party support, easy as shit to rice, stable. I've used damn near every distro that gets talked about on /g/ and ultimately I always fall back to Ubuntu

Yeah, that's why most developers use Fedora, because Ubuntu is better... riiiiiiiiight...
