Your filepicker is unpatched. Those are the built-in thumbnails that are too small and not very helpful because it only has a list view.

I guess now GTK filepicker needs an icon view, since it technically has thumbnails.

Use a file/folder indexing system like tracker, I think it supports Nautilus integration.

You could cache the folders if you had unlimited ram, which you don't.

Or you could just get a SSD. They don't just increase sequential transfer speed 5-10x, random reads/writes are about 100-1000x faster than traditional hard drives.

I have a problem with custom services in Ubuntu 16.04, where I can start services just fine, and even on startup, but when I try to close them with
service customservice stop

but no message whatsoever is printed on the terminal and upon checking top, the service is still running.

I added the service making a copy of /etc/init.d/skeleton and changing the DAEMON variable with the absolute path to the script I want to run, and then using the command
update-rc.d servicename defaults

The service most definitely works, because it is run on startup. I could just stop it sending a SIGTERM signal, but I'd rather not have to check for its pid each time.

Also, I'm aware of the existence of upstart in 16.04, but I want to use RC this time.

there are plenty of solutions and all depend on what you want to do. If you don't care about 3d acceleration I would recommend libvirt + virt-manager

Because you're asking that question you should use VirtualBox. It's really simple, get a Windows ISO, create a virtual machine, boot up machine with the Windows ISO, install Windows, then you'll need to install the VirtualBox guest additions for some extra functionality but that's it.

XFCE is very simple, straightforward, and hasn't had a major update for awhile because it just werks. It isn't ugly, but it isn't very polished either.

KDE is very full-featured, polished, and it actually gets frequent updates and changes.

Other than that, they're pretty similar. Both can be riced, if you care about that sort of thing.
>>
>>57175841
as someone who's used manjaro before, if you want more of a GUI installer for arch than anything i'd go for antergos. after using both antergos is much nicer imo. their changes are contained to their own repo and otherwise everything is default arch.

I absolutely love automation and writing little scripts that make my life better.
But I fucking despise Shell scripting. The syntax is retarded, makes me want to kill myself whenever I go a few months without practice. It's way too complicated for something that just needs to run a few commands, loops, and ifs. Makes me feel like I'm doing chores instead of improving my life.

I basically want to combine Python's syntax with the low overhead of a Shell script.
Are there suitable options for me?
I really don't want to spend weeks writing a translator from a sane pseudo-language to Shell.

>>
>>57177004
Just write pythons scripts then?
>>
>>57177324
Running commands in Python isn't as simple as it is in Shell, that's what was stopping me.
But that's still the best solution, to be honest. I did some benchmarks, and even though Python is about three times as slow (especially on start-up) and twice as CPU-hungry, I can forgive it that because my sanity is worth more than saving some CPU cycles or 5ms of start-up time per script.

just ssh in like you regularly would then either run screen (no args) to drop you into a shell or run screen with your command

e.g.,

screen ./script

the difference is if you run screen with no args it won't terminate the screen session if the "script" fails but if you run screen ./script when the script fails the screen session will close and you'll get output

press ctrl-a-d to detatch from the screen session then attach with with screen -rd (or whatever reattach args you want to use, there's dozens of them)

screen -U (for utf-8) is pretty nice to have regardless of whether you plan on using utf-8 in your session

You most likely need the L package too, the shared libraries. Basically there isn't too much more to do, format your partitions, install it including gcc, the networking might give you trouble at first depending how you want it/the DE (but doubt it), "xwmconfig" to select which one you want to use, and "startx".

After that you can make it drop to the wm by default and have some fun with it. all up to you

its probably an ntfs partition, or has some of the typical windows fuckery, you can try to find it with "blkid" , then mount it manually, or fixing it with "ntfsfix" from (ntfsprogs), but most likely your going to have to delete the partition and add a new partition with an ext4 filesystem or something.

you can use gparted, cfdisk, or whatever ubuntu comes with.

try deleting the serverauth file if you havn't already, or copy it somewhere else to be safe, I'm not sure what distro your running. It should respawn, but whats weird is that should be in your users home directories not a tmp file.

The thing is there's no serverauth in tmp. I have inside pic related in terms of directories, and the lock files, whatever they are.

I'm using Void, and it is the 1st time it breaks something, although I always had kind of issues with resolution in Hyver-V

PS. I will have to go soon.
>>
>>57182805
you could also try setting the authfile to your "~/.Xauthority" file, if your using "startx" open it with your editor and change the xserverauthfile=$Xauthority or alternatively xserverauthfile=$HOME/.Xauthority.

I'm really thinking that auth file is whats screwing you up because if you terminated it may lock you out.
>>
>>57182920
Where should I add that lane? In .Xauthority? It is empty right now.
>>
>>57182907
I'm not really familiar with void, its kinda a new path for a distro so there might be some things i'm not aware of, but you should try and change the group on those X1 lock files to root and delete them "chgrp root X1..." "rm X1..." and keep trying.
>>
>>57182944
"whereis startx"
"less startx, or give me a screen shot"
the line should be in the startx file (its a bash script normally)
But first try a reboot, killing the X process and restarting it, deleting the X1 lock things, the serverauth file being missing is odd, it should try and generate in the home directory, if all else fails try adding that line in and (hopefully) it will generate the equivalent of serverauth in the Xauthority file, or at least let you start it.
>>
>>57182907
beyond that i'm really not sure, you can check all the permissions for the X configuration files in your home, and make sure they belong to the user your starting it from
>>
>>57182907
hopefully someone more familiar with void can give you a hand with this, because its kind of strange. If its not configuration files its something to do with permissions or a service needing to be restarted.

its telling you that you already have a process running, did you kill it in htop? Go to it, f9, 9, enter, then try to restart.
>>
>>57183200
do you have an "empty" group in your /etc/group file, if not than you most likely need to change that to "users" or whatever void's version of this is.
>>
>>57183260
Ok, fresh news. I deleted the thing I missed it from deleting (in htop) and now I have a half-working xinit, which is great.

I rebooted, but it is still the same, which is weird because I have xinit on logon.

Pic related are the X11 process on fresh reboot.

So I tried deleting them and starting xinit manually and now it is full working. I tried my neofetch for some testing and it is not showing the background, so maybe I have some paths fucked up without knowing. It will be the very 1st time but it can happen I guess.

>>57183341

>>
>>57183389
okay, cool, everytime you have to retry it do that.
don't use xinit, use startx instead
>groups
well your files should be owned by the user, and your user should belong to the group the file is associated with. So "ls -la" to see if they are, it goes "permissions, user, group" so if void has an "empty" group as well as a user, and your running it from that you should be fine.

it's difficult to only learn a few bash commands. Better way is to learn how to do basic stuff (ls, mv, cd, touch, mkdir, rm, rmdir, cat, less..) and then learn more useful commands that you might want to use for some specific stuff, like find, grep, top, chmod, etc.
For me the two commands people should know about are find & grep.

with lxdm

additional dbusses appear when i logout/killX and return to lxdm to relogin with different session/user

i was thinking to add something in /etc/lxdm/PostLogout to kill dbus but dont know what exactly

cat /etc/sv/dbus/run
#!/bin/sh
[ ! -d /run/dbus ] && install -m755 -g 81 -o 81 -d /run/dbus
dbus-uuidgen --ensure
exec dbus-daemon --system --nofork --nopidfile

Quick question.

I had a failed install of Debian stable and I'm too much of an idiot to be able to extensively troubleshoot it. If this is a dual boot setup, can I just run the installer again right over it and have it work out? Seems like an obvious answer but I've heard shit about GRUB and bootloaders and don't want to accidentally fuck over my main OS (yes, it is backed up but I would rather not go through restoration).

Also, my laptop wireless card requires non-libre firmware. I found the package for it and downloaded it, but the flash drive isn't showing up when it prompts me for the network firmware during the graphical installer. Am I able to just dump the package on the USB that I have running the installer and have it pick it up?

Thanks, /fglt/.

Is anyone else getting a slight pop of sound when it turns on? It's an incredibly minor annoyance and only started happening within the last few days.

I'm on Debian Sid.
>>
>>57186936
What you want to do is start the session like this
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session <whatever you use>

so that when you logout dbus exits.

Is there a way to make lxdm source xinitrc? I'm not familiar with it.

1. Installing/reinstalling Debian shouldn't affect your Windows OS. I've never had it fail at detecting the Windows partition (and if it doesn't, you can just run the os-prober command + grub-update after booting into Debian)

2. Are you using the nonfree installation ISO?
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/8.6.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-cd/
If it still needs firmware & isn't detecting your other USB device, then a surefire way to make it work is to put the firmware (.deb file(s)) into the /firmware directory on the netinstall drive.
>>
>>57187020
As long as you don't delete or install over the partition that contains your main OS you should be good. Basically, pay close attention to what you're doing during the partitioning phase.

The flash drive's file system needs to be something Debian can recognize, like FAT32 and the firmware needs to be extracted (common mistake not to do this) to the root of the flash drive. Oh and you should've used the non-free ISO (http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/) to avoid having to do that.

Whoops, thanks guys. I was so hung up on seeing "minimal installation" that I never noticed that there was a version with that added firmware. I'll try that version next.

And you're also right that I didn't know about unpacking it. Good to know for the future.

Also, I got a QUESTION.

How do I quickly choose to cd into
n element i get from $ls.

I get a list.
If the file/dir is long I gotta type it (all) -- there has to be a more efficient way. Like enter first element in ls.

Got any primers?

Why is my icon text color black? I looked this problem up online and got a couple of solutions but none of the solutions worked (changing a couple of lines in the CSS files of my theme, etc.).

I'm running Debian Jessie with Cinnamon as my DE.

I don't like KDE, honestly. KDE's start button is ugly (unless I can change it to something similar to Cinnamon).

Try tab completion. If you type the beginning of a command or file name, then tab will complete the rest of it for you.

If tab does nothing, then there's more than one match. Press tab a 2nd time and it lists all the possible matches so that you can be more specific.

Have you tried this?

~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
.nemo-desktop.nemo-canvas-item {
color: #fff;
text-shadow: 1px 1px @desktop_item_text_shadow;
}

.nemo-desktop.nemo-canvas-item:selected {
background-color: alpha(@theme_selected_bg_color, 0.8);
background-image: none;
color: @theme_selected_fg_color;
text-shadow: none;
}
>>
>>57187249
Tried this and it did not work, but I'll try it for one last time.
>>
>>57187260
What's your GTK+ version?

Run
dpkg -l | grep libgtk-3.0

If it's lower than 3.13.3 you'll have to apply the CSS rules to the theme itself like so:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Cinnamon#Desktop_icons_text_color
>>
If I have Debian dualbooted, how would I make sure that I get rid of GRUB if I want to uninstall it all?

3.14.5

By the way, I don't have a gtk.css on ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css so I created one.
>>
>>57187320
Once you go GRUB, I don't think you can go back to the Windows bootloader unless you reinstall Windows. But I'm not 100%.

Why not just stick with GRUB, even if you're done with GNU/Linux?

Holy fuck, anon, it worked! I logged off and then logged on and it worked. I think the reason why it did not work the first time was because I was applying it to every theme and I did not bother looking for the gtk-3.0 folder.

A friend gave me an old IBM ThinkPad (T42 2374).
The windows installation is fucked and its stuck in a boot loop.
I'd like to put mint on it. How do I go about this?
Do I just look for the latest version and put it on a USB stick and try to boot from that?

It's dual booted with OS X. I don't particularly mind since it will obviously work, but it's more about knowing exactly how to undo everything and/or have a clean slate.
>>
>>57187402
Are you not putting the netinstall ISO on a USB? I was able to just add/remove files to/from it easily that way.
>>
>>57187426
Yes, that's what I'm doing and where I'm going to add it. There are two .tar files (control.tar.gz and data.tar.xz), though, so I'm not exactly sure what level of unpacking I'm supposed to be doing.

Grub panics if no Linux is detected not allowing you to access Windows. To get rid of grub you need to boot into the windows recovery disk and open up the command line to repair the boot loader
