IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What's the most thinkpad'ish modern laptop? In the sense of design and layout. I really like the design of, say, the t520(keyboard, mouseoptions, visually appealing), but I'd like nodern hardware and battery, preferably without frankensteining the entire thing. Modern lenovos are drastically different, not a big fan
>>
Finally the thread is back
I got given an old acer ferrari 4000, has an amd something rather and 1gb ddr1, Whats a linux distro that will run smoothly on it?

The most modern ive been willing to go is a x230, the laptop goes so coolly im able to turn off the fan anf and for me thats a big win

>>57117864
>The most modern ive been willing to go is a x230
Yeah for me t520 is the most modern I'm willing to go. That's why I'm not asking for a thinkpad, but are there any other companies that does something similar? I don't even need the customization, I just want a sensible thinkpad-esque design

What do you think about 40 and newer series?

This is an 8470p. Really surprised at the build quality compared with a T430 (the competition). Miles better. Also has a meme smart card reader for whatever reason.
Trackpad is also much better, and the 900p screen is slightly better than lenovo's counterpart.

Bad things are dogshit trackpoint and a slightly inferior keyboard.
>>
>>57118719
Barely any difference between the two, apart from the fingerprint reader and keyboard.

Also, whats up with the shitty keyboard light? Who thought that was a good idea?

And also why is the screen so dim even on its brightest setting?
>>
>>57118764
The screen is brighter than the T430 (which is not saying much).
The light is useable, not as good as thinklight (not as bright). The button for it is an interesting gimmick, I'll give you that.
>>

For me the crack would be the only offputting thing. If you have no safety net machine then its ok. You could always stream videos on your TV. Use it as a homeserver, if the cd-drive misses already you have even space for another hdd. I would buy it, if I hadn't enough old hardware laying around.
>>
does anyone use jbidwatcher or other sniper for thinkpads on ebay ?
>>
Any 3rd party/chinese/ebay vendors that sell quality discount batteries?

I'd like a 3-cell battery for an X220 tablet, and I don't want it to go to shit after a month, but the official Lenovo version cost almost as much as the laptop. If I've got no other choice and the official one is proven to last, I'll have to shell out the bucks.

>>
>>57119471
Literally the opposite of what you should do

Booting from mSATA and having most of your shit on the hard drive is the same as having your OS and programs on a desktop SSD and all your data shit on the HDD

Got an X220 with an mSATA and a HDD and it works like a dream

Where is that from anyway?
>>
>>57119471
That's false. They only said that because in the "old days" the biggest size of SSD available was 16GB or something and it was therefore used as cache.
Putting windows on a 16GB SSD doesn't seem reliable at all.

one more question, when you buy a t430, is the WAN card usually in there using the msata slot? How do you go around this if you wanna put an ssd in there?
>>
>>57119535
mSATA in mpci-e
+
SSD in dribe bay
+
HDD in ultrabay
+
external usb 3.0 strapped with velcro to the back of the screen lid and permanently connected
+
boot device with puppy linux in usb pen drive
>>
>>57119581
When you buy a T430, usually you have a wi-fi cvard in the smaller mpci-e and an unpopulated bigger mpci-e.
This mpci-e can come from factory with either WWAN card or mSATA SSD.
That's where the SSD should go, because it doesn't fit the smaller slot.
Which means you have to choose between WWAN and SSD.

That bigger mpci-e can also be used for other shit, like a TV tuner card or something.
>>
are the newer thinkpads quieter than the older ones ?

This

mSATA + SSD + ultrabay HDD

SSD will be slightly faster and easier to stick into another device so id stick your OS on the SSD

>>57119581
WWAN is normally where mSATA is, normally you can either have a WWAN or an mSATA not both. If you need WWAN use the SSD for OS and ultrabay HDD for data

Nope. CEOs take advice from their CIOs (that's why they pay them the big bucks). They in turn listen to their IT staff who are busily populating their CVs with technology that will look good to a future employer.
It's a very rare CEO who actually knows what is happening in the boiler room.

I found this thread and it reminded me that I have a Dell Precision M6300 lying around not really doing much, which is a shame because its still in pretty good shape, but I don't have a ton of use for it. It's still got Windows XP running on it with like 1GB of RAM despite having a max of 8, so I was thinking about maybe installing a new OS, upgrading it, and fixing up some of the minor cosmetic issues. The only thing wrong with it as far as I can tell is that the HD doesn't seat properly, despite working totally fine, and the battery needs to be changed.

Anybody happen to have one of these or a similar model and are doing anything interesting with it?

My t60p finally needs a fix (touchpad regularly stops responding for a few seconds. new touch pad?) or a replacement.

I've not paid attention to lappy tech in 7 years since i got the t60, because everything now has the widescreen equivalent of 1997 resolution.

I found a cheap x131e which, of course, has shit-tier 1366*768, but it's small and looks sturdy.

I've not seen the x131e or other x1XXe models discussed in TPG threads, or in the TPG sticky info. Why is this?

Resolution aside, the specs are better than my t60p, and i'd run the same distro. So I would assume it'd be an improvement. Will i hate it if i get one? If so, how do i find a high-resolution t4XX, t5XX? Did they drop the "p" suffix for the newer models?

Other recommendations?

>Why is this?
Because for a very similar price you can get an X220 which is actually more or less the same size, has a real processor instead of trash-tier AMD E-series, and IPS screen options that won't make you want to gouge your eyes out.

>Did they drop the "p" suffix for the newer models?
The -p models became the W series. Although they did bring the suffix back for the T440p and T460p, it doesn't quite mean what it used to. T440p and T460p are successors to the T420 and T430 with full-voltage processors and modest dGPU options, while the non-p T440 and T460 are low-voltage ultrabook bullshit.

If my budget is around 250, what's my best option for a thinkpad? I'm partial to it either being relatively small or being one of the reversible tablet types.

I'm seeing a lot of X230 tablets with i5's for only $200. Should I just go with that? Seems like a pretty solid price for me. Thanks for any/all assistance

Would a T430 upgraded to a 3612qm still get quite of few years of use (video editing, music production, gayman) when paired with say, an EXP GDC as an eGPU option?

Or would I be much better off scrimping and saving to get something like a P50 workstation with a 6700hq and investing in a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU setup down the road?

For small trips I have an X200 that is serving me well thus far, but I'm kind of tired of having a bulky desktop at home and would like something with power that I can travel with and dock at home and still be good as a desktop.

In January I'm gonna be going to central Africa for a period of 18 months.

I'll have internet access there, so I'' looking for a laptop to stay in contact with my family and friends.

I need a laptop with that is somewhat light (<5 pounds) good battery life (>5 hours) that is also resistant and can survive accidental drops.

Any recommendations? My budget is $500.

Alright, looking at a refurbished X230T, 3rd gen i5, 8GB ram, and a 120GB SSD. $235 w/shipping.

The trackpad and keyboard has a little more wear on them than I'd prefer, but I'll live. Looks like there might be a scratch or two on the screen too but it doesn't look too bad.

Thoughts on how good of a deal this is? I think I'm going to just pull the trigger, seems to be a really good price to me compared to everything else I can find.

This CPU stagnation in performance is crazy, the 2720QM and 2760QM from 2011 also are around those scores and can really power up a T420.

42-50c idling, 85-95c on full load. Keep in mind that the cooler is designed for a 35W TDP Dual Core and it's running a 45W TDP Quad Core.

Mine came with the 90W brick so i kept using that one, it works fine.

According to thinkwiki.de if you upgrade to a quad core the 65W won't be enough but i haven't tested that so can't say for sure.
>>

I have an i7 T430 w/nvidia gpu that came with a 65W brick and it's sufficient for most of the time, the only occasion where it's not is when I'm playing gta v. I suppose that it's due to it being very intensive on the gpu.

If X220/30 tests are anything to go by, the T420 would be a lot better than the T430, but both are likely to handle any spill you throw at them. Unless you're planning on spilling a gallon of water onto one of them, in which case, the T420 is probably better for that case.

I really don't want to replace it because it means I would have to take the motherboard out to access the fan + heatpipe assembly and I already failed at trying to access it a while back.

To remove the motherboard, you have to unscrew the display ribbon connector and it's stuck on so tight I couldn't remove it without stripping the screws.

Do you know any places where I can look for X220T in EE? okidoki has only 1 ad and I don't think it's valid anymore
>>
>>57135713
X230 on Sweden
8470p on UK
Both though eBay.

what is the best thinkpad I can get for my mum? she's computer illiterate, would be for basic browsing, good battery life preferable.

I paid more for my T61. Truth to be told, it didn't have cracks and the clit was there.

My X220 fan was doing that. I just replaced the entire HSF assembly.

Dear /tpg/,
My t400 died of a motherboard failure a couple of weeks ago. I finally manage to get a nice t420 today for 200$ cad, a lucky find.
Now. I'm getting a bit paranoid because my t400's motherboard failure and I'm afraid I might fuckup the t420.
It happened a little while after I installed arch on it, to try something different from windows. I did notice that my fans were really quiet under arch. Could it have been that the fans didn't work properly under arch and fried the laptop while it was idle?
Linux spooks me now tbqhwyfam
>>
Any Israelis lurking the boards? Wonder if looking for a ThinkPad is worth it, living in Israel and all.
The local 2nd hand websites offer very overpriced laptops. Might eBay be a plausible option then?
>>
>>57144462
linux is a meme
>>
>>57134824
The 2720QM is still a beast of a chip. I have the same W520 configuration, and with an SSD the thing absolutely murders my girlfriend's brand new Macbook Air. Plus it can keep up with a lot of the modern low-voltage Thinkpads.

>>57143776
10 years may be a bit optimistic, but I can see the xx20 series still being useful by the time Windows 7 bites the dust.
>>
>>57144462
Never had any (major) issues with Arch on any of my T or X series ThinkPads. Run the command 'sensors' to see your fan speed under Linux.
>>
>>57144462
>Wanted to try linux

You had it coming to you, next time you know what to do

>install gentoo
>>
>>57144497
If the fees are not insane, your best bet is probably american ebay.
>>
>>57144554
Yeah, I did and everything was working properly. I suppose it was just getting old then.
>>57144557
But I did install gentoo at first. Had everything working, but compiling every single thing was a little too long for me famalam

I'll install Antergos later this week and see how that works.
>>
>>57144591
Hell, you may just be able to slap your old Arch drive in the new laptop and have it work fine if you wanted.
>>
>>57144591

I have a Thinkpad W500 that I still use, which is sort of the Lenovo equivalent to your Dell. Has a Core 2 Duo T9400 running at 2.53 GHz and even with a fucking hog like Windows 7 it is still more than sufficient for what I need it to do. If you get an SSD for your Precision, you could conceivably use it as an everyday machine.

>>57121283
If it actually comes out, I may finally consider replacing my W500. This would be the second Thinkpad I owned, and the only one I bought new. Hopefully it isn't shit.
>>
>>57144548
>10 years may be a bit optimistic
The T61 from 2007 still works fine though, not the best but fine.
>>
>>57144591
This >>57144685
Another reason why you shouldn't pretend you're 31337 and stick to something that works, like ubuntu, mint or fedora. Nobody cares about the distro you use, faggot. I'm a sysadmin, I use mint on my personal laptop and ubuntu on my work laptop.
>>
>>57144722
True, and the CPUs have evolved a lot slower since we got to the "i" series.
>>
>>57144735
But Anon, I never did pretend I was a 1337H4x0rz, in fact I'm quite illiterate, I just wanted to try something new.
I installed Gentoo for the meme of it, had fun doing so, and I figured the next logical step was to try Arch.
Sorry Senpai, I didn't know those distros were secret clubs, I won't do it again I promise.
>>
>>57144722
It may still work fine for now, but how about 5 years from now?

That is what I was getting at. A T420 has about another 5 years to go before its best before date, aka 10 years from release date.
>>
>>57144789
Yeah but you could safely extend five years because of the current CPU performance stagnation imo, even more when you add a quad core on it.
>>
>>57144787
You're like a kid that put his hand on the stove burner, gets extremely surprised that he burned his hand and vows never to use a stove again.
Grow up, you don't build a house starting from the ceiling, you don't learn linux starting with uber complicated distros.
>>
What are the chances the retro thinkpad will be with anti microbial keys?
>>
is a used T420 worth $326.11?
>>
>>57144815
But, Senpai, all I did was ask if my Arch install could have been responsible for malfunctioning fans, and thus, the death of my motherboard.
I honesty thought that trying something that doesn't work straight out of the box was a great way of learning things. But I'll take your words and install Ubuntu.
>>
Is a refurbished T420 with 8 gigs of RAM, a 240 SSD and a 2.8GHz i7 processor worth $508.49?
They offer insurance for about a year.

I'm going to install gentoo tonight on my t420. What DE will support its keys like volume control?
Or maybe you have some configs to awesome/i3 which includes that support?
>>
>>57144995
To give you some perspective, I paid 300€ for my T430 with i7, nvidia gpu and 6GB RAM. Even that was too much, but I really wanted the nvidia gpu and i7.

Oh, and insurance is a rip off, if you do have a problem they will most likely make some shit up so they don't have to activate it.
>>
>>57145022
You're in for a world of pain, dear friend. Godspeed.
>>
>>57145039
>>57145022
not really

use stage4 to get to a working config, the stock kernels that ship in that stage usually work but sometimes you will have to modify TZO in kernel config else it will panic on boot.

boot into your setup, tweak what didnt work/your make.conf and emegre --sync && emerge -uD --with-bdeps=y @world

nigga please

Alright, thanks for the constructive feedback everyone.

A relative of mine is apparently going to be in the US next month, and he said he could pickup a package for me if I were to order anything.
Where can I order a T420 for a decent pricetag in the US?

ebay

X230 because it's smaller.
The other is for the gf and is a great machine too. Sturdier than a T430.
