IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What's the over-under on current generation Thinkpads, Elitebooks, and Latitudes?

I'm replacing my home office laptop this month and I'm contractually obligated by my clients to have professional support so I can't really buy anything else besides the above (or a mac *cringe*) lest I get into some legal trouble if my backups shit the bed.

Any thoughts? I'm a Java and Web (Node,React,Angular) consultant.
>>
am i the only one who gets eyecancer of the ThinkPad W530's screen?

IT services here. I've had my hands on all the current gen "professional grade," hardware. My thought about the skylake generation is to avoid it. Literally none of them made good trade-offs. They all went too thin and it cost them thermally. None are going to perform well in two years, much less four. Keyboard quality is down across the board. Trackpads are the only thing that was actually improved, but barely.

Not that macs are better by comparison, their throttling is legendary, but quite honestly I would look for a broadwell "new," that is still under service warranty. You should have no problem finding one. Thinkpads > Latitudes > Elitebooks for that generation.

>>
For those with the X-series tablets, what GNU/Linux distro are you running, and how is the touch/pen support on it?
>>
>>57090949
I'm just not a mac user. Never have been. I ran Windows up to XP and then transitioned over to Linux during the Vista years when I started my own company. Never had even a moment at the keyboard of a mac so picking one up with several important clients on contract is a really bad idea for me. If worst comes to worst I'll just limp another six months on my current machine until the warranty is out and see what the kaby lake generation looks like.

>thread typically has people who buy used laptops and hate anything past 2013
>this guy is asking about newly released laptops that maybe 2% of this board uses

Just get something with an SSD and be done with it, dock it, place a USB fan underneath.
Who cares if it breaks, you got a backup of your files and you're going to get it paid off/replaced anyways.

All three companies basically have the same type of warranty service. Pay extra $$$ for their top class. Just get something with an SSD and intel graphics if you want to be safe, unless you're doing extensive dGPU stuffs.

As far as build quality... There's too many damn laptops to say 'this brand is good'. I thought the X1C3 was a tad underperformer so I rock a T430s. Currently flipping an E7440, this is pretty decent machine, just battery life isn't great with an i7.

>>57090972
Xubuntu & Ubuntu studio works on my X61T and X230 when I had it. I believe wacom drives should work, not too familiar with the sensitivity but it should work near perfect, never had to calibrate the display when installing.

>Who cares if it breaks, you got a backup of your files and you're going to get it paid off/replaced anyways.
My lawyer. Specifically, we work with some government contracts and it's mandatory we're provisioning hardware that's fully covered by the manufacturer. If for some reason that weren't the case, we could easily be fined and lose the ability to get more of those sweet sweet contracts (gov't work is by far the easiest and best paying).

did you not read about the part where I said pay $$$ for their top class machines?
Most of these business class laptop meet MIL spec standards, if this isn't good enough for your lawyer, go buy a ToughBook or Getac instead of Dell/HP/Lenovo/Apple.

How can we tell you which laptops are good and reliable when the previously built computer is out of warranty and the newer machine uses different components and different build designs? People who were Apple only found out the hard way with the 2010-2012 MBPs that had shit GPUs. Same went with the ThinkPad X240 blank screen problem when a certain corner is lifted, it didn't happen on the previous machine.

Normally these machines new have a 3 year warranty, they also have a 2 and I think 5 year additional warranty should you want to pay for it.

Nice to know you come to a serious place like 4chan for a laptop that meets government contract standards.

You're more than likely to see there are problems with new computers than people not having problems with them. And those which are reliable that have no problems, most likely out of warranty/service unless you get one direct from the manufacturer, I would be sure to call them how far the warranty can be held.

Wait til Kaby lake so the late models get dipped in price.

Is $110 good for a X220 with no hard drive or charger? I imagine i would have replaced it anyway.
>>
>>57091271
Then just get whatever is cheapest in order to save your employers (AKA every taxpayer) money. New ThinkPads aren't as great as the old ones, so it's just a matter of preference. As >>57091095 said, they're pretty much all the same under warranty.

>Nice to know you come to a serious place like 4chan for a laptop that meets government contract standards.
To be honest there's better technical advice here than CDW.
>>
>>57092153
Addendum: I can't recall the models but if you go for a ThinkPad, some models have deeper key travel than others. If you like the typing experience on older keyboards, deeper travel is a good thing.

X220T or X230T and why?
>>
>>57093786
If you buy the x220 you get to feel superior but if you buy the x230 you will always be like "damn maybe I should have got the x240" or 50 or 60 etc.
>>
>>57093820
Why?
x230s are barely more expensive than the x220s, the keyboard feels better to type on, and all models have usb 3.
While the 40 series are still $100+ or more over the 30 series.
>>
>>57093836
Defenitly the specs are better but if you dont need intel hd 4000 then the superior keyboard experience will always be on the original. It's not just the layout but the classic design and the feeling when sliding your fingers between the keys.

Actually, when I saw someone mention Getac in the thread, I went on ebay to see what there was.

So I've got an i7-640M in the lappy I'm posting on (E6410), and the Getac V100X is missing HDD, OS, Battery, Caddy.

CPU is a 640UM, 1.2 GHZ.

I CAN remove the CPU from this laptop, and the other parts aren't too much of a burden.

The Getac is running for 67 bucks, which isn't too bad, but seriously-

I'm pretty sure I can get the other parts for it, it's just I gotta do a bit more research to see if the Getac CPU can be replaced.

So much for a thinkpad, lel.

>>57094363
What should I get instead then? I don't want to get a 5 year old laptop, but all the new ThinkPads look like shit.
>>
>>57094395
What do you really need it for?
Because remember the x220 with lenovo power manager can get 10 hours of battery life, and still performs pretty well for just casual web use.
and if you turn off the power saving stuff, you can easily get a web browsing experience comparable to a newer thinkpad.
The only thing these older laptops struggle with is gpu performance, so if you aren't gaming you'd might as well get a 4-5 year old thinkpad for dirt cheap
>>

never use speccy to monitor temps, it's fucking awful.
Use real temp
90+c under load is when you need to start to be worried, but as long as it's under 100c you are good (especially if it's turbo boosting at that speed)
>>57094680
power saver on windows 10?
and what are you doing on it?
On windows 10 I'd get 4-5 hours normally, and like 5-6 with power saver on on my t420.
But in windows 7 with lenovo power manager I can easily get 7-10 hours
Also I'd suggest turning off the dgpu if you aren't using it, it's on 24/7 even if you aren't using it.

Fine for video editing?
I still have mixed feelings about getting something so old, there's no warranty and no new parts being made.
And I was hoping to get something with more HDD space, like 1TB.
>>
Question: what's the thinkpad with the absolute longest battery life? I have a Thinkpad x201 with 2 9-cells (one old and one new battery), and I consistently get around 9-12 hours with the new 9-cell 0-100. However, I like to keep my battery between 40-80% for longevity's sake, and that means I'm only getting around 4-5 hours of battery before I start to run below 40%. I love the computer, and I have no real problems with it except my own battery-related autism, but if there's a thinkpad which runs longer, I'd love to hear about it. If not, I'm probably just going to install libreboot on a Asus C201 for a fourth laptop.
>>
>>57094814
Easily.
Obviously rendering won't be very fast, but compared to newer dualcore laptops it will only be like 20% slower, for 20% the price.
and you can easily upgrade the hard drive, although please don't put an hdd in a laptop in 2016, just get a 250/500gb ssd, and an external hdd if you really need that extra space (which you probably don't)
And warranty is only useful for shitty laptops, or during the first month you have it (infant mortality).
Outside of that first month or two if it's still going strong it will for a long time (especially a thinkpad)
>>57094826
with the x220/x230 you can get the turbo battery on the bottom to get 20+ hours battery life.
>>
>>57094870
>20+
That's goddamn sexy, anon. Thank you.
>>
what thinkpad should i get? my budget is 300 usd
>>
>>57094907
>$300
Do you like em small or large? Battery? Speed? Screen?
If you don't care, just get an X220, best all-round laptop. If you want to go cheaper, X201, which are just as good, if not better in a few ways.
>>
>>57094907
What do you want?
Thin and light with great battery life?
Big, but really powerful?
Or something in between?
I'd say go with a t420/t430, and get an ssd for it if you don't know what you are looking for since it's a nice balance of both.
>>
>>57094870
>and you can easily upgrade the hard drive
I have no idea how to do that. I'm not a tech guy.
>please don't put an hdd in a laptop in 2016
I'm pretty sure my laptop now has a HDD and it runs fine. I'm looking for a lot of space on a $500 - $550 budget.
>Outside of that first month or two if it's still going strong it will for a long time
I'm not sure if I agree with that. My Yoga 13 was pretty great, but the battery got fucked up.
>>
>>57095078
Batteries usually only have a 90 day warranty since they die fairly quickly no matter what
and how did you kill it?
and a t420/t430 + a 250gb ssd, and a 1tb external hdd will easily be under $500. Hell you can probably get it for under $350.
and trust me, an ssd in a laptop is really nice.
Especially since you can throw it around and as long as you don't drop the whole computer it will be fine.
Hell if it's just the ssd you can throw it against the wall and it will be fine.
But one bump while a hard drive is spinning and it will be pretty fucked up.
>>
>>57095121
>and how did you kill it?
I'm pretty sure it just died.
> a t420/t430 + a 250gb ssd, and a 1tb external hdd
There's no good ThinkPads that are 2 or 3 years old?
I'll try to get one with SSD since it's apparently that big of a difference.
I already have a 1TB external HDD, but it's almost full.
>>
>>57095149
Don't but a thinkpad with an ssd, it's usually old and it's a terrible deal.
and all of the 2-3 year old thinkpads are $400+ for a working one with shit specs.
and to replace the hard drive in a thinkpad is dead simple.
Just 1 screw, take off the cover, pull out the old drive, slide in the new one, and screw the cover back in. you can easily do it in less than 2 minutes. Any 2.5" sata ssd will work, ideally get an 850 evo since they are very reliable, and are really cheap.
Just make sure you have a usb drive ready to reinstall windows (or whatever os you want). and DON'T stick with the OS you get when you buy one used.

Does anyone have experience with painting laptops? Specifically thinkpads?

I've done some searching and the results seem to be about what I want. As the thinkpad was inspired by bento boxes, I'm thinking that a black lacquer like exterior would look nice on an x220.
>>
>>57095214
Well there was a guy like a year ago who painted his t400(?) bright as orange.
I think he said it took hours to do.
No idea how long it lasted though.
Then there was someone on leddit who plastic dipped his macbook and after like a week or two it started to come off.
And why would you want to take it from matte black to a shinny black?
>>
>>57095171
I'll just accept that there are no good laptops and keep using my duct taped one with the cracked screen.
That may be nothing to you, but there's no way I wouldn't fuck it up.
>>
>>57095273
If you break a real thinkpad™ without trying.
Honestly as long as it doesn't land on it's open screen a thinkpad will be fine.
I've seen people drop their thinkpads off of ladders and they only broke a small corner on it (and honestly it wasn't that bad)

I'd like to make it gloss for a lacquered finish look, like a bento box. Which is what the original industrial design of the thinkpad was based on.

I'm kinda also wondering if an auto protective film would help. At least for the lid.

I'm not him but come on dude you can't fuck up installing an SSD on a thinkpad, it's a single screw and nothing else.

Have bought an x220 just recently and now considering memory upgrade. So, from what I gather, it is able to handle 1600mHz ram modules, but would still run them at 1333mHz. Is that correct?

Hi guys! I have just bought a pretty comfy X230 and I am considering which dock to buy for it. Ultrabase or Mini dock? Sure, from the specs you can see that ultrabase has an ultrabay and no USB 3.0, but does anybody have hands on experience with these?
>>
>>57096519
Yes.

Same limit applies to the T420 but it can run 1600MHz or 1866MHz RAM by downgrading to the 1.37 BIOS, not sure if that also works with the x220.
>>
>>57090329
Can a t420 keyboard work in an x220t?
I got my t420 with a pretty much perfect keyboard, and I'd like to put it into an x220t whenever (if ever) I get it.
Also is there any way to turn off the dvd drive in windows 7?
It keeps on popping out and I keep on getting the cursor thing where it trying to read a disk
>>
>>57096519
I have two x220's, one is with 1.26 bios that detects my 2x8gb 1600Mhz ram modules as 1600 and the other with 1.42 that detects them as 1333.

But I have X201T with 9-cell battery right in my cupboard. And the tablet part is just regular Wacom digitizer.

>>57099402
If you're looking just for a laptop, then no. If you actually need a tablet and laptop, you might consider it. In my opinion it's too bulky and heavy to be a tablet and the construction makes it a little less attractive than regular X series - the hinge becomes loose and the lid lock wears out as well. It works fine for taking notes though.

I stopped using it in favour of samsung note pro and X201s. The note has enough battery life for the whole day and I take just a 4-cell battery for the X201s, which is enough for around 2 hours of lectures that I need it for. When I know I'm going to use the laptop for more than 2 hours I either take the 9-cell battery or a charger, but my bag gets a little heavy then.

The X230t's nice to me. USB 3 is something I need because I interact with external drives all the time. The updated GPU as >>57093863 mentioned is kinda critical for using it with Photoshop/GIMP/Krita. Good GPU acceleration there is needed.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you're drawing on it. It's heavier and larger than the X230. The touch screen also not quite as precise as a normal Wacom tablet, and the thickness of the panel gives a bit of a disorienting effect when drawing, but if you want a combo tablet/laptop for doing sketches, it is pretty good.

I'm not sure what you're asking about. To paint it, you just need to disassemble the entire thing, sand it, paint it, and reassemble it.

There's nothing special to it as the heat is expelled through the vents in the side. I would advise a complete disassembly so that you don't get any overstay on components, but I guess a good tape Jon would be the same.

I painted my Razor phone when I was a teenager, but I forgot to account for heat dissipation so I ended up burning my leg in the middle of civics class. The extra coats of paint made it harder for the heat to escape and I ended up cooking the phone.

No dock has a fan. You're going to have to be more specific as to the model though.

The docks raise the rear of the laptop enough that a fan really isn't necessary. If you wanted a fan just for the hell of it, there's nothing stopping you from getting a minidock and placing a regular USB laptop fan under the rest of the laptop.

i love the X220s keyboard layout and positioning but i gotta say after 4 years daily using it the X220: the X230 keyboard stroke is somehow better.
it feels more "solid" - you can really hit the keys hard and the feedback you get is for me personally better!

the X230 is compared to the X220 inferior in my opinion (not just hardware like cpu/gpu etc)
the X220 keyboard looks badass and the X230 keyboard looks too consumerish and these "isles" the keys form suck

Dear /tpg/

A few weeks ago I got an x220.

I still use my desktop far more than I use the thinkpad, and I doubt that I could actually replace my desktop with a laptop, so I probably won't become one of those people.

That being said, it's easily the best laptop I've ever laid hands on. It's powerful enough for everything that I need, it's light and you can deploy just about everywhere. The trackpoint is amazing, and even as an absolute mechanical keyboard autist I can still tell you that the keyboard definitely deserves the praise it gets.

My only gripes with is the stock trackpoint cap. It's decent enough, but the convex trackpoint cap beats the shit out of everything, replacing that pretty much made it a 9.5/10 laptop.

I fell for yet another good meme.
Thanks /g/.

I have a X230T and the plastic hinge worries me a bit too. Other than that it is nicely built imo.

I haven't had it long so I can't say what the hinge fatigue will be like in 6 months, but it looks like an easy replace: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x230t_x230it_hmm_en_0b48730_02.pdf

To be honest, I can't see any better offers in my country for x230/x220.

Best I can do is ask a friend who is currently in the US to bring me one (ship to him). Preferably one without charger/HDD. From a little search in ebay, the prices are not *that* different. The good offers are pretty damaged.

I'd really like to have that sooner though.
>>
>>57108234
Oh alright, while you're here, have any comments about the X230T? I'm going to do the keyboard replacement, don't expect you to have done it, but it doesn't seem too difficult.
>>
>>57108342
I gave some opinions on the touch screen at >>57103694

I am annoyed at Lenovo for their whitelisted wireless modules. I bought 802.11ac APs for a reason, but I can not be bothered to dump / modify the BIOS to remove it right now.

For the keyboard, I have not replaced it, but I have disassembled it. It is very easy to remove: Take off all the screws on the bottom labeled with the keyboard icon, then slide it forward slightly and lift. After, remove the i/o plug (it snaps in).

A good video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euyItfKnKNg although that model is the X220T.
>>
>>57108423
Oh no, I get the normal keyboard replacement is easy, I don't even think that's changed on the newest of ThinkPads. I was rather vaguely referring to replacing the new keyboard with the old one, the similarities between the X220T and X230T make it easy to exchange their palmrests too. Does your's have a Bluetooth module?
>>

>I was rather vaguely referring to replacing the new keyboard with the old one, the similarities between the X220T and X230T make it easy to exchange their palmrests too.

I'm not sure on that aspect. Sorry.

>Does your's have a Bluetooth module?

Yes, the Intel 6205 module has Bluetooth. This is the standard wireless module on all X230Ts as far as I know.
>>
>>57108472
Alright, thanks. When I get it (a month or two from now probably) I'll give pictures of how it looks with the old keyboard.

An additional question for anyone else who knows, are X201/**10 keyboards compatible with **20's without any modifications? I'd prefer an X201 keyboard over an X220's, but I've only heard about **20 to **30 translation.
>>
>>57108472
Nope, the 6205 does not have Bluetooth. My T430 has a 6205 and BT is provided by another module, a BCM20702 daughterboard below the touchpad.
>>
>>57107536
How's the battery
>>
>>57108552
Oh, good to know. Thanks.

What an odd configuration though. There are several Bluetooth modules within Intel's 6xxx wireless series.
>>
>>57108598
The post above your's reminded me to ask, how's the battery life? You've a new battery or old, and how many cells?
>>
>>57108598
That is the 6235
>>
>>57108621
My battery was marked as refurbished. It's 6 cell, the highest for 67+.

On average I'll get ~4-5h of moderate use (drawing in Krita) out of it at max screen brightness. I haven't configured anything like powertop for a more optimal configuration though.
>>
My 6 cell battery lasts like 2:30 hours on my T420.
It is worn out a lot, right?
>>
>>57108890
My new 9cell battery lasts 2:45 hours haha, probably because the laptop is fron 2010. Use hwoinfo or some other tool to see how much wear it has

> Im looking for a Bento Box, it cant be pinku (thats japanese for pink) or any girl color. It has to be of 2 or more kotoba (thats japanese for 2 compartments) and has be be chibi (small) sized. And has to be really kawaii (cute). Also It has to be about 10-20 bux. And you have to post pics of it first (i want to make shure it's kawaii (cute)). And it would be nice if it came with matching chopstick holder (WITH chopsticks). OH! and it CANNOT have any cartoon pictures, or be made out of plastic. It has to be made of ceramic, or something like that. Also it would be nice if it was made in japan. and not in china or corea (korea) or whatever. I have found a Bento Box similar to the one im describing in e-bay, but it was 1 kotoba, and i dont want my gohan (rice) to touch my other things (it can get wet and i would not like that, plus 2 compartments looks more kawaii)

Go to notebookcheck, Ars Technica, or Notebook Review and ask about business class hardware. Ars is a great place to get intelligent answers.

Are there any good Thinkpad related wallpapers?
>>
>>57109106

Someone made dark wallpapers with exploded views of a few different Thinkpad models a while back, I'm sure someone has them and can post them.
>>
>>57109106
If there aren't any good thinkpads what makes you think there will be a good thinkpad wallpaper haha

You need fast service but not necessarily wonderful hardware. Ask techs whose onsite service is best. Hardware is trivially expensive in your world but you need your data.

You should have spare notebooks onsite if your work is that critical. The loss of any one computer should not matter at all.
>>
>>57095273
It's one screw, a cover, and there are plenty of videos and pics of how to do it.

If you never try, you will be helpless forever. There is no safety in helplessness.

What data proves your laptop requires additional cooling?
>>
>>57104384
IDK about the w530, but I know that my w520's quadro 1000m throttles under high cpu and gpu load
My t430 also throttles, but only on the cpu which is a lot more painful.
Not sure why either throttles, both have been re thermal pasted.
>>
>>57108569
Decent enough, typically get around three to four hours of battery life out of it with my regular use, wasn't expecting a whole lot from a used laptop battery.

Going to get some 9-cell off ebay in the future.

Got my first ThinkPad last week for $150; a W530. It's way too fucking big, and way too fucking heavy.

I'm looking to get an X220 or X330. Are they worth it? I'm looking for something small and light, for comfy shitposting and the occasional Steam game on Loonix.

How common are IPS displays on X-series products? I can't stand the W530's TN angles.
>>
>>57109663
The IPS screens aren't very common on x series before the x240.
and really you hate the w530s screen? did you get the 1366x768 screen or something?
My w520's 1600x900 screen is gorgeous for a TN screen, just as good of viewing angles as my 2012 macbook pro with the 1680x1050 matte screen.
>>
>>57109725
I got a 15-inch 1920x1080 TN screen. Colors look great, but the angles are horrendous.
>>
>>57109774
Really? mine aren't that bad
Really good for a TN.
maybe we need to swap thinkpads :^)
>>
>>57109663

You in the United States? I'll be happy to take it off your hands for 200 if you're willing to sell it.
>>
I have a thinkpad t420, and it started getting hot (70 degrees c or so), so I replaced the thermal paste (arctic silver ceramique 2), but it still will not cool down. I dusted the fan as well. How do I fix this?
>>
>>57109885
>70 degrees c or so
Full load? That's pretty good.
Idle? rest in pizza
>>
>>57109885
is that under some sort of a load?
if that's at idle then rip in rop heatsink.
But if you are actually using it with the cpu going to whatever clock speed it wants then that's pretty normal temps.
>>57109850
no, go away. I want it.
>>
Any ThinkPads with a decent processor (i5-3x or better) easy to stick a dGPU in? Not only am I a hopeless manchild(I can let my toddler hog the TV or chase him around the house to keep him from an heroing), I also do tons of video editing for work, and use Moonlight to get into my system from my phone as needed, so I would need to be able to put at least a GTX-M of some sort in there without much issue. Just about every other aspect is highly negotiable, given chinkpads' relative modularity. The Yoga 14 looks okay if I can somehow fool GeForce Experience into thinking the 940m in there is Gamestream capable, but the keyboard is cancer compared to my wife's X61.
>>
>>57110009
You do know that these are laptops right?
99.99999% of them have soldered in gpus.
>>
>>57110038
Cramming something where it doesn't belong and bogarting another part's connection to solder it in can be done on some laptops. If not ThinkPads, then I suppose I'll just keep an old one around for road work.
>>
>>57110009
Not that i know of, but doing an eGPU setup is very easy.

Bought an X220 without being influenced by /g/'s obsession with them and I love it.

Some questions:

My bottom left corner (where the card bay is, where your left wrist is) can be separated easily? Makes it feel cheap and it cannot "clip" back into place. Should i just superglue this?

The plastic in the top left corner of my screen is INCREDIBLY flimsy. Like I can wobble it by barely touching it. Other side is fine and firm. Do I super glue this too?

This is a stupid question too, but there are two drive bays in the X220 right? What are my options for adding a second drive?

Last thing, is it worth getting an IPS screen? The stock one annoys me but I can't tell if it is worth getting IPS. I only bought this as a quick fix following my old machine's death but now I'm in love with it.

Thanks

>My bottom left corner (where the card bay is, where your left wrist is) can be separated easily? Makes it feel cheap and it cannot "clip" back into place. Should i just superglue this?
the express card slot?
the flap is supposed to go down, and I would highly recommend not gluing that.
>The plastic in the top left corner of my screen is INCREDIBLY flimsy. Like I can wobble it by barely touching it. Other side is fine and firm. Do I super glue this too?
Like above the line? I've seen people say that it coming loose is a common thing, but taking it apart and putting it back together should fix it
>This is a stupid question too, but there are two drive bays in the X220 right? What are my options for adding a second drive?
Msata ssd where the wwan card would go
>Last thing, is it worth getting an IPS screen?
That's up to you, I had an x220 with the IPS screen and it had TERRIBLE temporary screen burn.
>>
>>57110143
I've thought about that, but at that point, why not just tote around an old X61 or X220 and Moonlight it into the gaymen laptop I'm using right now? If I'm in spotty network conditions, or something happens to the laptop or power at home, suddenly I have to email my boss and say that I can't finish up a project until I get home that night, or I'm stuck playing Dank Souls on absolute minimum settings at 20fps. And while a portable power supply and eGPU could be built into a messenger bag, it would look funny at airports and make portability more of an issue than it should be.
>>
>>57110183
The express card slot is pretty 'flexible' on my x220 as well

The corners of the screen on my x220 are fine, sounds like you may need to secure it somehow

The x220 only has 1 drive bay, I have seen people putting a mpci-e ssd in the WWAN slot
(but i don't remember if you need to do a bios mod for that, I had to to swap a better wifi card in)

The 1st Generation IPS screens have pretty bad ghosting issues (image retention) there is a version after that is better
but it still has ghosting issues. but other then that I love the IPS screen.

Ahh shit, don't remind me. I have three of them I got cheap in the 90's, including one with the 586 upgrade.

When I stopped using them my young, dumb ass stored them in the attic without taking the batteries out. The only one that survived was the only cs in the group.
