So I bought a Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO set a couple years ago, and before I knew it, the damn wire frayed in the cable. Lopping off the end and tossing a new jack (proper 1/4") on seemed worth, so I did that with some heat shrink tubing layered for strain relief, and it's functional for now...

Should I actually bother to tear them down and install a better cable any time before notable degraded sound quality occurs again?
>>

solder it if you can, and if both sides sound equally loud forget about it
but if you can get a new cable get that, better two
>>
>>57116371
Connector is decidedly soldered, ye giant roll of cold-war era extra-lead-and-maybe-some-mercury-for-flavor solder being put to good use.

Mostly I'm just hesitant to tear into the cans themselves if fraying is unlikely to indicate a complete breakdown of some part of the cable. No balance problems, guess I'll call it good then.

Not the same poster but there is a pretty severe drop off of dollar to performance for 99% of people once you surpass $200.

That being said I have everything from hd518 to hd650s. Is there a noticeable difference? Yes. Is it worth the $$$ difference? Only you can answer that. Personally I prefer the hd650 over the hd 600. The hd600 were neutral to a fault. I felt like they had a veil when compared to any other headphone. If thats your gig, groove with it. If you are unsure then sample them somewhere. Most big cities have some shop where you can sample. You might discover you love them or that you love ultrasone or grados more.

A fixed HD598, with an ideal source, both sound quite similar but the HD598 is inferior in everything but still very good overall. I feel like Sennheiser purposely designed the HD5xx to sound inferior to the HD6xx by making the frequency response a bit more veiled. Anyway, my subjective impressions of the HD600 vs the HD598:

HD600 has better extended sub-bass

HD600 has a more accurate lower midrange (the HD598 has too much dB in this area relative to the rest of the frequency ranges)

HD600 has a superior and more accurate upper midrange response (this probably gives the HD600 its smaller soundstage as it makes things appear to be closer, but it's more accurate so I prefer it)

HD600 has a better treble response and it has more treble overall without being bright (I feel like this might be due to the HD598's lower midrange emphasis, for some reason the HD600 has more treble overall perceptibly, but not a lot more, yet the tone of the treble is the same on both, no sharp peaks or dips, maybe a slight recession at 8kHz on both headphones

I was thinking about getting an external dac and a cheap tube amp recently, was wondering what your thoughts are on the following.
>Behringer UCA202 DAC
I've used Behringer sound boards a lot in the past when I used to work in a theater, and they were pretty solid. I was expecting that kind of quality to translate over here as well. Also they're cheap af and I'm trying to stay reasonable and not excessive with my budget.
>Bravo Audio V2 Class A 12AU7 Tube Multi-Hybrid Headphone Amplifier
Yeah I know, it's a cheap headphone amp from a brand that I at least have never heard of, I should be wary. I'd be buying a different tube than the one that comes stock. Probably from this brand called electro-harmonix that I randomly found on amazon. It has pretty good reviews and is cheap enough that it doesn't seem like that bad of an idea.
Once again, I know this isn't the best equipment out there, but that's not the point, I'm just testing the waters out there, especially with that tube amp; I'm a sucker for silly aesthetics.
I'm currently using a pair of ATH M40X's right now, and I don't see myself upgrading in the near future. Should I bother?

I've been listening with pic related for a year or so now on a MacBook.

Mids and highs are definitely great (I prefer flat responses), and the bass is accurate.
I kinda wish the bass was a bit stronger though to flatten out the response.
No experience with amps, and I'm only considering to get one if I know I can get a more accurate response.

I feel like the FiiO E10 would be an alright pick.
Thoughts?

The last time I came here I got HD668B from gearbest, which I've found pretty good, as I'm not that much of an audiophile. Dunno what the balance is on that. Kinda on the fence about buying the sames.
>>
>>57126972
I never heard them here then I must presume that they suck.
Fiio E10K is always a safe option.
>>
>>57126972
>No experience with amps, and I'm only considering to get one if I know I can get a more accurate response.
That's not what amplifiers do. You need an equalizer to alter the response and amplifier if you lack volume. Those headphones do extend in bass really well but require a good seal to do so. If you need more bass, you equalize it.

FiiO E10K is good cheap converter/amplifier but it's not going to solve your response issue.

>>57127537
If you felt HD668B is comfortable enough, it's one of the best really cheap options you can get. AKG K240 ear pads fit it so if you need them to be more comfortable, those are a good option.
>>
>>57127705
Found them as a result of worrying on the comfort of the M50x while wearing glasses.
Heard that these are really comfortable.
Heard that they have an incredibly great mid to high response, but the bass is a few decibels lower than a lot would like even though they are pretty accurate.

>>57128193
I hear that parts of the frequency response improve as a result of extra power.
No idea if that's true, though.
>>
>>57128491
>I hear that parts of the frequency response improve as a result of extra power.
Not true, extra power translates into sound output level. Uneven voltage division due to frequency varying impedance can alter the response. This requires your output impedance to be large compared to the source(headphone) impedance and the headphone impedance needs to have large swings. Those KRKs have no large swings in impedance and MacBooks tend to have very low output impedance so there's nothing the FiiO would alter, other than giving you more volume.

hey guys. i want to have headphones for 200-300 euros. but i just gut 50-100 euros at the moment and get the chance to buy sennheiser hd 598, 3 years old , 2 times used for 50-75 euros. is it worth the money or should i wait till i can get new ones?
>>
>>57134233

Yeah, that's not a bad price. They're good headphones for the price. I had them briefly for about $100 USD used and I'd say they were worth it. Only thing I didn't like was the comfort, most like the way they fit, but the cushion on the top of the headband bothered me. Wish it was just flat there.

Only reason I returned them is because I bought multiple headphones during that time and couldn't justify owning all of them.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD598s and I'm not too terribly impressed with its low ends. and they feel flimsy in comparison with HD280s I've owned, if you can believe it. The broken AKGs that I have are by far the most comfortable headphones I've owned, but they're chinese trash. I don't want to spend over $200 on headphones anymore because my trust has been shattered with these AKG headphones and when my "indestructible" Sony MDRs broke.

I've also heard that Beyer DT-990s aren't too bad and I'm at a lower risk of blowing them out with their power requirement.

Is there a $100ish headphone amp that won't have channel imbalance at low volume on sensitive headphones? I was looking at the Schiit Magni 2U until I read the channels imbalance up to 8 on their volume dial, what's the point of even letting the dial go below that?

Can anyone please explain what a DAC and sound card are actually for? How does it make things sound better than the jack I already have on my PC?
>>
>>57136538
It doesn't.
>>
>>57136578
Why?
>>
>>57136624
The burden of proof is on why would it
>>
>>57136538
The jack on your PC comes from the same type of hardware that you'd find on a sound card, it's the same shit except already on your motherboard instead of a separate card.

USB DACs essentially contain a stereo sound "card" in an external box. An actual sound card generally has more features even at the hardware level (line input, microphone, more channels) and on the software side it can come with software that does extra shit too, like various forms of DSP.

What makes something sound better (or at least what makes it a device which is objectively better at reproducing digitally recorded sound) is defined by shitloads of metrics, but you can basically pretend it has better performance. Just like a dedicated graphics card is much better at its job than the integrated one, except the differences are nowhere near that pronounced.
>>
>>57136538
A DAC converts 1s and 0s to analogue so your headphones can play audio.
Some sound better than others. An external DAC moves the component outside the case, usually reducing any noise in the signal. Typically, motherboard sound isn't as good as an external DAC. Especially for higher end gear. It also allows you to pair an amp to properly power harder to drive cans, which motherboard sound often fails at.

Basically, trying to see any suggestions under $25 that'd be similar to the HO870's with a relatively decent comfort level. Like I said, I've almost exclusively used those, only stopping using them for a little while to use a pair of Afterglow LVL3 headphones a friend gifted me, but after a hour or two my ears would hurt from the pads.

Preferably, looking for something almost identical to HO870's, but with metal or wire arms. A on-cord volume adjuster, which HO870's have, would be a bonus, but not a dealbreaker if it doesn't. Most important thing is the pad size, which I don't have exact measurements unfortunately.

Also if none in that price bracket, next month will have more cash + employee discount where I work that lets me get electronics at what the company pays in Cost+10% (alot of headsets I checked the price on were about half sales price with this), so might be further options later.

Hey /HPG/, gotta a few questions for you:
In your opinion, what makes a headphone good for immersive gameplay?
As far as i know open-back headphones sound more natural than closed-back, does this check or is it just audiophile placebo talk?
What about angled drivers? It makes sense that they work for soundstage since in theory the angle is not much different than that of correctly positioned monitors, is that how it works/why it's better?
What makes imaging better in some headphones is also angled drivers coupled with slightly brighter signatures?

I'm guessing closer--to-neutral signatures work better for allowing the player to hear everything and that maybe a bit brighter signature can actually influence the perception of an open space as opposed to a bassy/warm signature.

Any input on this matter is welcome, haven't found anything specifically writen about headphones AND game immersion, so i'm guessing i'll have to draw a few parallels here between headphones affecting audio and dynamic sounds in the game landscape.

if you're interested, read this blog back to front - nwavguy. STOPblogspotSTOP .jp

an ideal DAC does nothing to a signal and is transparent. an ideal amp does nothing but amplify and is transparent

a soundcard is basically a DAC and an amp. your motherboard has a rudimentary but sufficient dac/amp combo built in most probably.

back in the day you needed an external card cos onboard was garbage but for most uses onboard is fine unless you're rocking some nice headphones, or if you're like me and you wanted tactile volume control so you bought and built a O2+ODAC

For me, open headphones with good imaging/directional separation, neutralish signature. The main thing that affects immersion is the game's own audio engine, which is often shit. The second is how good your DAC is, which isn't a high bar. ODAC or similar does the job, and most of the higher tier stuff is built around better power supplies.

Headphones as long as they are halfway decent trail way back in 3rd. And this is from somebody who uses his SR-007 for everything.

Basically, just get a good setup that you like. Don't bank on people doing the audio right in music, movies, or games. That way you'll just be happily surprised when they do. And you can sure tell when they get it right, even from something like an old Koss Portapro.
>>
>>57147460
If you have multiple uses of a dac rather than just plugging in cheap-ish headphones direct to your pc the o2 is the best bet, otherwise you're better off with an e10k as they sound exatly the same.

Those takstars are greta for the money but do you really use them with your o2? You really should be using something better to justify that amp like the 702 or hd600 etc

>>
>>57153769
The e10k is an amp Dac combo [which is fine. Probably good in your situation]
It plugs directly in from USB as an output device. Alternatives are SMSL Dac/amp combos, Micca Origen and other fiio shot.
>>
>>57149081
In that case, noise cancellation is fine. Deep insertion IEMs, however, passively isolate just as much, if not more, than active noise cancellation meaning you don't need to pay the price premium.

I think the terms for sound design are Bassy and Balanced correct? I am looking for a pair of Balanced Headphones. I like to play games and watch movies with explosions. I don't want to be punched in the ear when they go off, but I don't want to hear crackles and have to turn down the audio either.

>In your opinion, what makes a headphone good for immersive gameplay?
Immersive? Nice warm bass, good clear sound, good soundstage and imaging

That changes a fair bit when you talk about 'competitive' games like Overwatch or CS. All you want for that is good mids and highs with amazing soundstage and imaging. AD700x/9000x incarnate

>As far as i know open-back headphones sound more natural than closed-back, does this check or is it just audiophile placebo talk?
No, its true. They have a much less congested sound, [more airy, less reverb] leaving everything less artificial sounding. They also typically have a much larger soundstage, which helps with 'realism' too.

>What about angled drivers? It makes sense that they work for soundstage since in theory the angle is not much different than that of correctly positioned monitors, is that how it works/why it's better?
Essentially, the drivers line up with your ear, giving a more accurate sound, and less outer ear to mess with the sound.

>What makes imaging better in some headphones is also angled drivers coupled with slightly brighter signatures?
Not necessarily. HD 558/598's are warm headphones with rolled off highs, and have excellent soundstage and imaging. Not bright at all. The ATH AD series is fairly neutral, and is god tier in imaging and soundstage.
Imaging is aided somewhat by soundstage [although not at all reliant]
Its the materials and shaping of both the enclosure and the driver, along with positioning and size.
>>
>>57148651
Brainwavz HM5/NVX XPT-100 [whatever is cheaper]
Both are almost identical
Should be similar to your MDRs. Just wider soundstage, ever so slightly less neutral, and more comfortable.
Incredibly comfortable, good soundstage, neutral but responds well to EQ if you'd like to do that. Isolates well due to amazing thick leather pads and closed back.

Try fixing your MDRs though. 7506 are pretty good.
>>
>>57154893
558/598's are probably a good bet for you. They've got relaxed bass/sub-bass, and rolled off highs [less so with the 598's]
Incredibly 'pleasant' sounding, so extended listening won't tire you out.

along with good ass comfort

some AKG's might be an alternative too

Many streaming services offer transparent quality and the audible compression artifacts would be apparent on even modest gear. Streaming itself doesn't affect quality in any way. The lossy file compression fails at different things than headphones do at reproducing the original signal so the thinking them as some kind of a "bottlenecks" to each other is wrong. Whether it's worth it is up to you.

>>57157975
Why do you think it would make a difference at all no matter how much you spend? Your motherboard is a DAC and a headphone amplifier. Are they malfunctioning or limited in volume?

Probably not the best idea. aptX low latency already adds some 40ms delay and standard BT audio is over 100ms and up. Even if delayed sound is far less detrimental than delayed visual information(laggy cursor for example), it's most likely going to throw you off in a rhythm game like that.

>>57157975
Amplifier/DAC checklist:
-Is it too quiet?
-Is the output impedance too high (fixable by equalization)?
-Is there noise/EMI or hiss to it?
-Does it sound distorted as you start to crank up the volume?
If the answer is no, don't get one.
