If he doesn't trust his software provider, like on windows already, he can choose another one, the important part is to get out from the Microsoft's lock-in in the first place and stop depending on windows. Also open source is the opposite of the 'i have nothing to hide' argument, in this case they're the ones showing they have nothing to hide.

I get what you say but canonical's record on being shitty is not nearly as bad as microsoft's at the moment so, along with the fact we're on a point were people will laugh at you if you claim that using ubuntu is hard (assuming all your hardware is well supported of course), i think is a big step forward. If at any moment OP dislikes canonical he can move to other distros with practically no risk of having to change what software he uses, this is not true for windows for example, so even if you were right he can just move from ubuntu at any moment.

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

>how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

Honestly, it doesn't. Thank you for the intelligent response.

The fact is, I tried. Really tried. Even my gog account which has 42 games, only 14 are natively available on ubuntu.

So the others would need an amount of work, wine and workarounds with command lines to get going.

I think that if steam keeps improving their game library and the steam machine actually takes off, then linux gaming may actually turn the corner.
This will make bigger, better studios take notice. (not like they already aren't)

Of course you gonna get a performance with wine hit but if your hardware is good it should be perfectly playable and even more with recent wine versions. In the end we should be asking developers to use multi-platform tools from the start, that's the secret even for all those awful console ports.

>...

>>57079590
Wine is a compatibility layer, it translates the calls from windows programs to linux/mac equivalents implemented on wine, that's why your WM can control wine programs or why you can copy and paste for example as if it were a windows program. It's perfect? of course not, what those guys do is titanic by itself, everything must be reverse engineered, you cannot contribute to wine if you have seen code from microsoft, however this is also the reason why you don't need a license, because wine doesn't contain any line of code from the windows APIs.

Wine doesn't simulates a full windows installation and only uses what is needed that's why if the program works fine on wine it's better than runing in on a VM.

Regarding the linux office is Libreoffice and you don't need a license but you can buy support from a company called collabora if you need that. If you have problems with MSO documents remember MS doesn't implements the "standard" they pushed and only them knows how their format works perfectly (and sometimes not even them in my own experience), so i use MSO on wine when i receive MSO documents from other people but i use PDF or ODF for everything else so i cannot be locked out from my own documents. Also google docs is good for collaboration if needed.

Yeah, your reasons and your choice is always respectable of course, i'm not telling you to stop using windows or something like that (in fact is just pasta). However what i can tell to those who tries to deter people from playing games on linux or trying to spread that there's no games on linux i think they're shooting themselves in the foot because i hardly have seen someone asking for linux exclusivity (which is ridiculous due to the marketshare anyway), what we usually ask is for the developers to use multi-platform technologies instead of windows-specific one to make cheap deploy on multiple platforms (the cost is usually the argument for not porting). IMO using windows specific technologies can potentially make the developer work twice and just gives the exclusivity to windows for free.

This is an egg-chicken situation and vicious circles are something that doesn't changes with no action.

>>

Yeah, it can happen by default but in can be fixed on all drivers, if you have problems with a program on fullscreen like smplayer deactivate the non redirecting option or add that program to the blacklist on compiz (assuming you're using unity).

Supermemo has a few similar programs namely Anki, which I have used in the past (and like more than Supermemo if I just need flash cards).

It's just they don't have the incremental reading feature (https://www.supermemo.com/help/read.htm), and it's difficult to replicate because you'd have to build it off of a browser engine most likely. Supermemo is pretty heavily tied in with IE.

There is an incremental reading plugin for Anki (http://frankraiser.de/drupal/AnkiIR), but it pales in comparison to Supermemo.

Disagree.

>better fonts
I beg to disagree too.

>better drivers (less heat)
This is a pretty wide claim and the less heat argument depends a lot on the support for that specific hardware. The most problematic common drivers i know on linux is multi-gpu configurations like the ones that uses optimus (the middle finger was well deserved) but even that has workarounds.

Ok i give you this last one, there's hardware not supported on linux, still if someone has hardware well supported on linux i definitely recommend it.

Not him but the no games argument is still true. Windows is the best OS for gaming mostly due to DirectX being better than garbage Khronos puts out, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for console to Windows to won't affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the Linux marketshare is small compared to Windows due to garbage like OpenGL/OpenAL, unstable ABIs and horrible audio stack.

The fact though is that the situation on Linux is still the same as decade ago, it's unstable trash and now those who prefer Linux still have nogames, keeping the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for Linux to compete in the gaming side. You can beg like bunch of entitled chidren on Steam forums spamming epic "no tux = no bux"

Care to elaborate? what are your criteria to claim this?

>so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for console to Windows to won't affect negatively the performance of the game.
The amount of bad console to windows ports beg to disagree.

>due to garbage like OpenGL/OpenAL, unstable ABIs and horrible audio stack.
Again, what is your criteria to say that is garbage? Regarding unstable ABIs steam solved this problem by bundling a runtime.

>The fact though is that the situation on Linux is still the same as decade ago.
>it's unstable trash and now those who prefer Linux still have nogames

There's a vicious circle but the reasons were exlained in the post you're replying to.

>but still there's a lot of things to do for Linux to compete in the gaming side
That's what the other posts already says.

>You can beg like bunch of entitled chidren on Steam forums spamming epic "no tux = no bux"
So basically people wanting the situation to change makes you upset and entitles you to call names? answer the original question in the other post first.

>how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the Linux?
Competition is good for the users, at this moment MS has practically a monopoly and linux having games allows me to play in my platform of choice without affecting windows users negatively as long the developer chooses multi-platform tools.

>Because I consider that software freedom to be meme of autistic unemployed neckbeards not contributing to any meaningful way to technology.

I used Windows 10 Enterprise with a free license from DreamSpark for eight days before reinstalling Windows 7. It's probably the most user-unfriendly OS ever, with next to no configurable options. Software-as-a-Service is already pushing it, but Microsoft's OS-as-a-Service is not something I'm willing to put up with. With random driver updates that I have to opt out of after they're installed and apps that can't be disabled I'm fully convinced that Windows 7 is the last Windows I'll ever be using.

You must be 12. Most business does not. At work we use IBM AIX and at my previous job we used Red Hat.

I use nvidia proprietary drivers with 3 monitors and never have tearing issues, even when playing vidya on it. This is on 144hz monitors, all three.

You must be doing something wrong.

This is what I had lately on all my computers.
"It's almost time to restart your computer."

You can just agree, "remind me later" (so it will restart at a random time), etc.
It's like the "FREE" Windows 10 upgrade.
But with simple updates.

Like those XP updates that wiped all your work because of the restart.
