Serious question: What is so special about a Macbook?

Background: One of my nieces birthday is coming up in about a month. I asked her what she wants and she said "Money, because I am saving up to buy a Macbook". Since I'm where I am financially I immediately considered just buying her one so I did a few quick searches. Every single Macbook for sale appears to have 2-3 year old hardware and a price-tag 2-3 times a good modern laptop with modern hardware.

If that is what she really wants then fine, but I do fear that she will just look at it and try it and think "Why did wish to have this piece of junk" if/when I buy her one.

So.. I am .. honestly seriously wondering what's so special about these outdated computers. Is there something magic to them or is my niece a bit retarded?

Perhaps, but not really. I am and have been a GNU/Linux person for 15+ years. Apple products have never been on my radar, I simply haven't paid attention to them enough to know much one way or the other.
