Hello guys
I have been eyeing mechanical keyboard for years
now I feel like finally buying one

because eastern europe, I have very limited options to choose from
also I dont want to feel stupid for overpaying
so quickfire is my most likely main option

is there some guide in to quickfires?
I see in our shops many possible variants
will check them out one by one I guess, like I did few months back already

also tenkeyless or not
I am kinda not really decided here, I kinda noticed that I would likely benefit from it when typing
I often feel like my keyboard is bit off to the left, pushed by its length...
but I also am kinda used to using numpad for numbers... I assume I will adjust when no numpad, but am kinda worried taking that jump

switches I am going for brown
seems to be liked, got tactile which I think is part of having the mecha keyboard
and they are not as loud as blue

What about cheap khali or whatever switches?
anything worldwide available and not total shit and for significantly cheaper?

They're still in production. They are ridiculously expensive though

It's too bad it doesn't have the split right shift, but it's hard to find that in Matias Quiet under 200$.
The price doesn't seem unreasonable. The brand comes up on Massdrop sometimes, and I hear they have some mild QC issues. In fact, that keyboard but with backlight and only Cherry Switches is on Massdrop right now for 90$+ shipping (+11$ for MX clears).

The Infinity 60% is available there, and you can get the split shift and such, but once you add keycaps it's even more expensive, around 140$ delivered. Reviews are pretty positive, but I have no idea if the production run will be worth it.
>>
>>57079213

Have you EVER typed on a buckling spring keyboard? I don't dig it personally, but a model F(and to a lesser extend also a model M) has an incredibly unique typing experience, unmatched by any modern keyboard I can think of.

Is that a Red Scarf II? How's it? Was tempted to join the drop but I'd rather wait for the whitefox to be available again later this year.

false, just being a delusional faggot
>>
>>57081909
Model F's don't work with new computers, unless you destroy it, then you're a fucking idiot.

Also, F and M use the same switches, only difference is how they are connected.
>>
>>57081405
Early versions were okay. Current is both bad and would be overpriced if it weren't.
>>
>>57081922
>"I don't dig it personally"
>just being a delusional faggot

I do like your projection, but maybe it's time to stop posting now, newfriend.

>>57081932
Yes, both use buckling springs. However, the model F uses capacative buckling springs, while the model M uses a membrane version.

The white caps are from an ancient Cherry Keyboard, and their texture is much better than the original ones on this keyboard. I would have put in more white caps, but they're slightly lower than the black ones and would make the backlighting (even more) pointless.
>>
>>57081953
>However, the model F uses capacative buckling springs, while the model M uses a membrane version.
capacitive*

Didn't I just tell you that?

Any good keyboard with a similar design to the Razer Blackwidow Chroma? My sister wants one, but I keep telling her that Razer doesn't make that Razer doesn't make that good stuff. It should preferably be available with a Nordic layout, US-QWERTY is fine since EURkey exists.

No, she apparently wants to have a numpad on the keyboard. The Ducky One is available with one, but she doesn't like the design. She sorta likes the Coolermaster, which is available with a numpad, but it isn't PS/2.
>>57082090
I already have a Leopold FC900 with Granite keycaps.
>>
>>57081728
You could look at completed auctions on ebay.

I personally love my buckling springs and dread having to work away from home because it means using different switches. A Model M was my first mech, and no other switch I've tried has lured me away, despite the incredibly funky old school vibe on a Model M. But you have to remember they're about as extreme a mech as a mech can get. A buckling spring is louder and heavier than nearly any other switch (it about matches a cherry green for actuation force).

You might try r/mechmarket on reddit, but I think aside from that ebay is your best choice.

The 1391401 is extremely common and slightly more robust than the 42H1292 (mostly, the metal backplate and plastic case were both thicker). I've seen them for 80$ on ebay used but working, though you never have an idea of what kind of use they went through. Model Ms are durable and repairable, but not immortal.

The Unicomp Classic is 84$, and is literally a Model M 42H1292 in everything but branding. The Ultra Classic is the same guts in a slightly slimmer case. There might be some tiny differences in the internals (different strength springs, for instance), but otherwise they're the same, so look at the price and think about what you'd pay for a used version of that.
You can get them in the sweet as shit EnduraPro version which is an ultra classic with a clit mouse for 115$.

The IBM Space Saving Keyboard or Model M Mini is my main. A TKL based on the same tooling that made the 1391401. They seem to all be around 180$ now. I got mine for 100$ but that was years ago. I would jump at sub 150$ to get a back-up if I could justify it right now.
(note, NOT, the Space Saver, or M4, which use rubber sleeves)
I really wish I knew why Unicomp doesn't make a buckling spring TKL. They made the M4s.

There are also still some Model Fs around. A quick glance says around 100$ too. The thing to be careful of is getting some weirdo terminal board that needs an expensive hardware converter to work with modern computers. Model Fs are all older, but the design of the switch on them (capacitive vs membrane buckling spring) is actually more durable than the version on the Model M.The spring is also thinner, meaning lower actuation force for the keys; around 60cn instead of 85cn (cherry clear or black vs cherry green); and yet it's also slightly louder. Even the ones that work with PCs (AT jacks) tend to have weird layouts.

I love the weight of the M's keys, so that's a big part of why I stay with them, but I've been contemplating buying a Model F and seeing if I could get heavier springs for it. They're longer than the Model M springs so I don't think I could just swap them.

On the plus side, the keys for the Models M and F should be mostly interchangeable, so you could get replacements from Unicomp if you wanted.

Technically, carpal tunnel syndrome is a specific kind of repetitive strain injury (RSI), and is almost only produced by twisting motions. Assembly line workers that had to screw parts together were the largest pool of sufferers.

Poor hand posture causes what are technically other kinds of RSI (usually just called wrist or forearm tendonitis or tendonosis).

I don't fear that I'll develop a hand RSI from my keyboard because I learned correct touch typing and keep my wrists as straight as possible while typing, generally moving only from the shoulder and elbow. The most important thing is to not let your palms rest below the keyboard while you're moving your fingers. Wrists bent back while using your fingers is the fast track to pain town.
For this reason, my keyboard is at the edge of my desk, so there's on temptation to develop a bad habit.

Model Fs have individually mounted switches and the spring and hammer design is different (Model F hammers are hueg), giving them bassier sound and more tactile punch.

This is even before considering the capacitve PCB vs membrane sheets.

then i'll better make sure I don't need to replace them.

I was thinking on taking the browns (I know, babby etc.).

>>
>>57088705
non-standard bottom row and non-standard stabilizer placement. Don't bother if you plan on ever replacing the keycaps.
>>
>>57088758
>>57088807
I'm not a fan of brown switches as they are pretty underwhelming. The tactile feedback they have is terrible compared to the other switches. Now they keycaps will end up with shine like >>57085160 if you use them. If you want a cheap keyboard with dedicated media keys then I guess you can go for it. Personally I would go with Duck One since its a little bit more expensive and has much better build quality and more features as well. It has dedicated volume switches, but playback is done with function macros.

Thoughts on corsair K70 lux red led?

I got it a few days ago as my first mechanical keyboard, I really like it. Mine is with red switches for gaymen. Still not used to it though, I make mistakes and sometimes accidentally press keys. The wrist rest it comes with is great, feels really good.

What I'm not sure about is that the space bar is textured. I hope it doesn't become smooth where I press it but it probably will with time. They also give you a bunch of textured keycaps which is nice I guess, I don't use them.

Also, keep in mind I couldn't find ducky or similar in my shithole cunt, so I had to choose from mainstream keyboards.
>>
>>57088993
looks like you should have went with a heavier switch like black. Why not get a keyboard with that since black are the cheapest of all the cherry switches. All those old cash registers used to have blacks in them, heck my police station threw away their old mechanical keyboards that had cherry blacks. I'm absolutely positive you can pick one up used for under 20 bucks or whatever currency you use. Of course it won't be fancy, but it will have much better build quality compared to the k70
>>
Recommendation plz
Budget: cheap as possible, 100$ max
Location: Denmark, Europe
Preferred switch type: tactile, hard, don't care about sound, can be comfy
layout: iso preferred, ansi is fine
form factor: has to be 100%
backlight: I'd prefer not to have it backlit.

if a 100$ one absolutely does not exist with these specs I'd like to know what the cheapest one is.

The Unicomp buckling spring keyboards have a metal plate under the keys; the internals are next to identical to the IBM Model M 42H1292 (most common blue label)
Sure, it's not as thick as the one in a third generation Model M (some blue labels produced between 92 and 96), a gray label Model M (2nd gen, eg, 1391401), or a Model F, but it's still metal, and the switches are still buckling spring.

The cases, barrels, and keycaps are also all mode on the same machines and with mostly the same plastics as the 4th gen Models M (PBT keys, etc).

You might be thinking of the fact that the earliest Models F and M had metal in their cases too, either the entire thing or just the bottom half.

Also the only metal cased IBM's were the Model F 4704 series and the F122. the unsaver probably had a metal back too. I don't think any M's had metal cases

Not much to show desu. laser-cut plywood (1/8", so the switches are glued in), diode matrix, teensy. Probably the most interesting thing is I wire-wrapped the teensy pins; it's been soldered to and desoldered from a lot, and is starting to kind of fall apart. This spares it unnecessary stress.

rows and columns. forgive the soldering please.

All I did was jam the plywood into a couple pieces of what i think is aluminum wiring conduit with some wedges of same, then hotglued everything together. Gives it just enough clearance to keep the wires from getting pressed together. Made a little bracket out of fr4 to hold the teensy; superglued that onto the back..

One of the traces on the teensy was broken, so i had to bypass it. This was the hardest part of the whole endeavor. Made the layout with keyboard-layout-editor, made the plate with builder.swillkb.com, made the firmware with kb.sized.io. Didn't have to look at a single line of code lol

This is the layout right now. I would have gone for an angled split, but the wood I had wasn't large enough to accomodate it. v2 will look more like >>57091515, and I'd like to achieve tenting as well. This was just to see if the layout was actually usable, which it is

Is noise an issue?
It might seem normal to you but the loud noise from bottoming out browns might drive people to hate you.

I would recommend you get a dampened tactile switch like matias quiet click. These switches are quieter then rubberdomes, but if you want full size your options are very limited (the white one is for macs)
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=&brand=&switch=32&size=Full+Size&led=&capmat=&capprint=&model=&availability=&show_kb=off&show_kb=on&show_acc=off&show_acc=on
>>
>>57093573
You might be right.

A coworker once brought his keyboard that had reds... a couple of us noticed right away that it was a mechanical due to the different noise and then after we mentioned it, other people in the same room remarked that it sounded louder and different.

I'm staying the fuck away from blues because of that... but what are the other alternatives? anything cheaper.

Thanks for the help anon.
>>
>>57093623
unfortunately the market for quiet mechanical keyboards isn't large as such its pretty limited to only matias quiet click and cherry silent (which are only available on linear switch corsair gamer keyboards).
The only other option is to mod the switches yourself by buying pads and dental bands

I got to test switches today at a local store, but they didn't have clears. I liked the blues, and I think I might have licked the browns, but I didn't like the lack of click. I would have to test them. How do clears measure up?

Ducky Shine 4, KUL ES-87, I think the new series of ducky one's also comes with clears.

Clears aren't clicky, they're heavier than browns and their weight increases very quickly as you go past the tactile bump. Probably my favorite cherry switch.

you can actually see part of my desoldering station right in the picture.

Problem was that it had gotten clogged with some molten plastic or something of the sort, which lead to it doing a rather mediocre job at desoldering, as a result of which I ended up ripping off some pads from the PCB. All of that then devolved into such a PITA that I just decided to handwire it instead.

Depends entirely on what form factor you want. They both have doubleshot keycaps, RGB and cherry switches. The pok3r also has a metal case, but I wouldn't consider that much of a plus, given that it's spray-painted and doesn't really add much more than weight to the keyboard.

I don't see how you're even having trouble choosing with two form factors as contrasting as these. Personally I'd go for the pok3r, but that's just because I prefer the form factor.

I have the same problem with light switches. I ended up actually using my kitchen scale and a book so I could rest my hand like it were on a keyboard, with just the middle finger on the scale. It varies between 40-50g depending on posture and breathing, so 45g linears are just too light. Discovered I didn't like linears as much as I though I would anyway so I ended up selling the board and going with a Matias quiet click. Tactile bumps help with accidental activation a lot, even on lighter cherries like browns/blues.
