Got myself one of those /csg/ magicforces with outemu blues.

Shit, thin ABS plastic keycaps
Seems like the switches are a sharper version of the Cherry blues, so not as "refined"
cost me 30 bongs from the Big Ben
Not the same magicforce that reviewers on YT and other sites have been showing. The plate is real metal, not some cheapo plastic, but doesn't have the "diamond-cut" edge around the plate, just a more matte finish.
If you wanna ask me anything about it, nows the time.

>>
>>57097446
But is it a normal layout so you can buy cherry compatible keycaps later?
>>
>>57097187
Was /g/ this dumb the last time I was here, and I just don't remember it because of nostalgia?

I guess I can understand since USB buffering is often confused with key rollover.
2KRO indicates a problem with ghosting and blocking, which occurs when certain combinations of 3 or more keys are pressed simultaneously (it's 2 key rollover because only two alphanumeric keys are guaranteed to work simultaneously though some combinations of more keys will work). That's why Model Ms are imperfect for gaming, because that's almost the only time you'd be pressing that many alphanumeric keys at the same time (modifier keys get their own channel).

It has nothing to do with how rapidly you enter keypresses (unless you fat finger it and leave your finger resting on the key or something dumb like that), which can only theoretically be a problem with shoddy USB keyboard implementations that can't buffer your keystrokes fast enough. Since Model M is PS/2, it cannot suffer this problem.

>>57097097
I'm trying to figure out a way to tell you to knock it off, stop raising the prices of ebay boards without sounding like I'm endorsing their value. Then I realized I shouldn't, since if more people join muh secrit club, companies might actually give us new buckling spring keyboards.
>>
>>57097638
Yeah, I've tried a Tai-Hao Miami set on it, and it feels a lot better. I'm using it as a "travel" board, so if it gets fucked up, I don't have to worry about replacing the keycaps or the board itself.

Once I get some more bongs, I'm going to mod it to use a Teensy and custom key layout.

Cheapfag here. I am soon getting a Havit HV-KB378L (Basically a cheap chinese RGB mechanical keyboard with knockoff Cherry MX switches (Listed as Gaote/Outemu)). Zealios in cherry housing have a better bump than the clear housing. Now I can use all housings for the mx blacks I can't sell.

I'd probably sand it anyway, but if you're really lazy get some paint+primer combo.

I don't really have a lot of experince with keycaps, they seem okayish.
They're not very thick. The sides are smooth and somewhat glossy (but the tops are perfectly rough and you can't feel the edges with the second plastic)
The >_ key should be PBT while others ABS, but they look and feel identical and I don't know any methods of telling plastics apart that wouldn't result in their destruction.
>>
Got an m800 for free. Custom caps are nice, but key placement isn't the best for typing. Gaming is great though.

All in all, glad I didn't spend any actual money on it, as there are far better mechanical keyboards out there for a lot less, but it was a nice upgrade to my Apex membrane gaymen keybaord.

You could test it with a multimeter, but there's not really a whole you can do about repairing PCBs.

Gaote switches do the job but are are lower quality than Cherry and even scratchier. Worth only if extremely cheap.

If it's only a single layer PCB it might be possible to bare the traces and run a small wire across whatever part is busted, assuming you can locate it.

Good luck with that. Making a keyboard matrix on a single layer is pretty much impossible, so chances are it'll have at least two if not more.

Hardly. It's frequently done on single layer and single-sided PCBs, albeit usually with some back-side jumpers in such case.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I've yet to see a modern day keyboard PCB that actually uses jumpers.

Though if you know some way to make a keyboard matrix on a single layer without having to use jumpers, I'd be honestly more than glad to hear about that.

It has cheap poor quality keycaps and a non standard layout so replacing them is a pain (pic related), and the LEDs are cheap too so they are prone to failure. Its overpriced compared to the competition, but if you can get it for really cheap then you can go for it.
I would recommend you buy a Chinese clone like E-element since it has similar build quality, but with a standard layout and much cheaper.

I have an ISO UK with reds, so they are out there.
>>
Going to ask a question I know is asked a lot

I need a KB that will work for gaming and be decent for typing, the priority is gaming > typing , however

I bought a rosewill black switch kb and it hurts my hands and I dislike the linear actuation. So when choosing the new KB, I think reds are a no go (since they are also linear , correct?)

I assume this means browns or blues are the next choice? I lean towards brown personally based off what I've read

Will probably buy rosewill again, since i am not interested in LEDs or other flashy bullshit. I read the archive and people said rosewill was acceptable

All I want is ps2 port and n-key rollover

I would like to hear suggestions though if anyone has any
>>
Why do you need PS2 port? And most gaymer keyboards are NKRO.

It sounds like you should get either brown (lighter than blacks) or clears which is the same force to press
>>
>>57105335

Why should he get clears? They have even higher bottom-out force and he said that the black were hurting his hands.
>>
>>57105335
I thought ps2 had a faster response rate than USB? I would prefer a kb with the fastest possible response time .

I see ducky is also highly rated from the archive? (Well mostly....) I would be fine with the ducky one brown switches (brown over blue so my teammates don't have to deal with super loud keystrokes ) , but would a 1000hz polling rate over usb be just as fast as ps2? Or does it not matter since I can get a converter anyway? Or are USB to ps2 converters pointless?

I'm not sure if clear are good because in some games I'll be repeatedly mashing the same key repeatedly , from reading descriptions it seems like clears would be harder to effectively buttonmash?/
>>
>>57105438
Response time in PS/2 vs. USB is not really humanly noticeable. The only major difference is that most keyboards only support 6KRO over USB and NKRO over PS/2 although I can't imagine why you would want to press over six keys at the same time.
>>

>n-key rollover
Ducky has 1000hertz polling over USB so you can get n-key roll over. They are a bit more expensive then rosewill, but for the extra 20 bucks you get plenty of programmable macros and some nice PBT keycaps.
If you don't mind the noise then get some blue switches

In csgo its possible

For example I need to walk (shift) , while moving forwards and strafing to the right/left (W+A/D), while talking to my team (alt), that's 4 right there (and you can be pressing 4 keys at once very often). All that needs to happen is I jump and reload, or crouch jump and all of the sudden a key stops registering

It happened to me a lot when I used my old rubber dome kb
>>
>>57105142
I don't know if this will help in any way, but I just got a keyboard with MX brown switches and it feel lika a higher quality version of a rubber dome keyboard.

>>
>>57105692

You won't be hitting more than 5 keys with your left hand unless you're a mutant.

Also the USB spec covers 6 keys AND modifiers so shift/ctrl/alt don't count against the six, meaning you can potentially have 9 pressed keys in the WASD area.

Also2.0 many gayman keyboards have gotten around the USB keyboard HID limitation entirely by enumerating to the underlying OS as multiple keyboards in one device, or as a non-keyboard device that supports 104 simultaneous button presses and happens to behave exactly like a keyboard.
>>
>>57106063
All I know is I would get a delayed jump after hitting space on my old USB rubber dome KB when I had a lot of buttons pressed . I never had the same problem after getting a n key roller kb
>>
>>57105438
>I thought ps2 had a faster response rate than USB?

PS/2 is interrupt-driven and therefore immediate, but if you have a USB keyboard with a polling rate of 1000Hz that's a maximum delay of ONE MILLISECOND and you'd be delusional if you thought that made any difference. Virtually all gaming keyboards poll at 1000Hz by default.

>in some games I'll be repeatedly mashing the same key repeatedly

The ideal switch for that is a buckling spring because it provides feedback at the exact moment of actuation, resets immediately when backed off and has zero hystersis... but there are no buckling spring gaming keyboards and the Model Ms are all 2KRO.

Linears like reds can repeat rapidly, but without any feedback you'd have to train yourself and rely on muscle memory to float the key on the actuation point.

>>57105560
>Ducky has 1000hertz polling over USB so you can get n-key roll over.

Polling rate has nothing to do with NKRO.
>>
>>57106151

Cheap rubberdomes are 2KRO, not 6KRO. So yes, you could run into trouble with three or more keys pressed on those depending on how the matrix is laid out.

>>57106195

Tactiles are actually easy to float for rapid presses once you understand where the actuation point is. On cherry switches, it's right after the tactile bump.

So for example on browns you press down past the bump and then feel for it coming back up and float the key around that point. It's easier to feel on clears, and since you don't actually ride all the way back over the bump the added tactile resistance on a clear switch only affects the first keypress.
>>
>>57102495
You can easily do single sided pcb with shift registers instead of matric.
Some smart tracing like placing traces under components might fit everything on one side as well.
>>
>>57106195

So would a USB to ps2 adapter get me that singular millisecond of delay back?
>>
>>57097126
How is the Atreus?
>>
>>57106352

Only if it's a passive USB (keyboard) -> PS/2 (computer) converter and the keyboard natively speaks PS/2. In which case it'll detect that it's electrically connected directly to a PS/2 port and will send PS/2 protocol signals using the matching USB pins.

Otherwise you're still running through USB.

>>
>>57106049
Not him, but the build quality is probably fine enough, but that's because making a board with decent build quality is not something that costs a whole lot of money. 40 bucks chinkboards come with metal plates that don't have any flex to them, so that corsair boards are considered "solid" isn't exactly surprising.

Corsair has a track record of issues with its keyboards though, mostly with the LEDs and their software. A quick search of the term "corsair led issues" should give you enough sources for that.

On top of that, the bottom row is non-standard.

It's not that corsair keyboards are absolutely terrible keyboards that will set your house on fire, but given the price, bottom row and track record, there's really no reason to get one when ducky and other brands offer better keyboards at similar prices.

I want a 104 with Cherry MX Clears for as close to 150 as possible. I hear quality on WAS CODE keyboards ain't super great but that might be from the perspective of some snooty pendantic bastard. I am not so particular. I have a Corsair K70 with browns right now and I miss my tactile bump and the space bar on this thing is all CLANG-CLANG-CLANG and it drives me nuts.

Is the CODE a decent keyboard? If not, any recommendations?

What about their keycaps? Is it just the problem with being shiny? I don't give a damn about shiny. I also don't type so much that that would be a problem for me. I keep my hands very clean and I don't tend to press very hard so there's not much rubbing happening. I don't think I've ever had a keycap go shiny on me.

>>
>>57106586
Anon was mostly being complete for full correctness' sake. Most keyboards, especially if they offer NKRO, do not have a native PS/2 compatible controller. These kinds of keyboards only even existed to use up stocks of old PS/2 based keyboard control chips, not because that delay matters.
It is extremely unlikely that the Ducky One is one of these keyboards.

Because that's only the polling rate delay, which is completely swamped by other delays in the system. From mechanical actuation just to the keyboard controller registering a button press is a minimum of 5ms. Mechanical actuation to host acceptance of press is usually more than 30ms, whether it's from a USB or PS/2 keyboard.

The full input circuit logic of whatever game you're playing probably only processes in average 100ms chunks.

And to put that in context, you need to understand that the world record for human reaction speed (optical stimulus to button press I believe) is something like 190ms. Average is higher than 250ms, and that's among athletes, which is likely higher than the general population.

Telling the difference in that delay is going to require something like specialized hardware.

Look, I understand the urge to make sure that even if you can't detect it, to know that you've absolutely minimized every possible source of error or delay in something you're using (an urge that is literally a symptom of autism). But the preoccupation with the fact that USB works by polling and PS/2 by interrupt is silly, given that any potential difference is swamped by other delays in the system (including your nervous system).

Whoops. Looks like I misread (or rather, used a bad source), and that's actually the mean reaction time to optical stimuli.
http://homepage.univie.ac.at/andreas.franz.reichelt/intro2cogsci2/data/literature_review_reaction_time.pdf

Though I've found other published trials that put the average closer to .25s (different units because of different precision of testing implements): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4456887/

Interestingly enough, the first citation does say that this has been considered a standard for at least 120 years. Perhaps the measurement apparatuses at that time were insufficiently accurate.

I've found top speeds for reaction-to-visual-stimulus is around .101ms, but nothing with anything that I'd call rigorous verification.

I've tried googling but haven't been able to find much at all about human reaction time slowing over generations; nor theorizing reaction time intelligence linkage, though I have seen a few resources arguing that average intelligence is going down.

They're sort of similar to browns but the tactile bump is much more pronounced and they have both a shorter actuation distance and are lighter.

Best way to describe them is that they kind of feel like a rubber dome, but strictly nicer in every regard and mechanical.

I will always buy Razerâ„¢ because I only play type with a keyboard For Gamers, By Gamersâ„¢. Razer also pioneers innovative new products like RAZER Coreâ„¢, Synapseâ„¢ and the highest quality software to ever grace Windows 10â„¢. When I boot up with a brand new Razerâ„¢ Blackwidowâ„¢ Chroma X, I can experience the lightning speed of Razerâ„¢ greens. Razerâ„¢ also delivers a far more silky-smooth experience. Razer Blackwidowâ„¢ Chroma X is also very stable on the table. A keyboard is the most unstable device in your house. Refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, dish washers, lights, etc all are significantly more stable than a keyboard. Which is why Razerâ„¢ puts gamers first by ensuring that their typing experience is of the highest quality while looking out for gamers by giving them the most stability. At this point in time, there's really no reasons to consider a HHKB at all. I tried one one time, it was so unstable it slid across my desk. It fell on my knee and broke my leg, giving me an expensive medical bill which I had to sell my computer to pay. It also had no RGB lighting to comfort me in my darkest hour. Now you can save thousands a year in medical bills thanks to patented Razerâ„¢ stability. Razerâ„¢ also pioneered how useless cherry MX is with Razerâ„¢ Greens. Years ago, everyone thought topre, gateron, and alps were the future. Now, Razerâ„¢ has purged these useless switches from their keyboards and increased efficiency. Razerâ„¢ is the only real way to play games. Anyone using anything else is probably too poor to afford the Razer Synapseâ„¢ Experience and cannot afford RGB to play games with the Razerâ„¢ advantage.

the only similarity between the two is that they both have the same actuation force. Everything else is completely different. Greens have a much higher pitched click compared to buckling springs and the feedback is after the actuation has taken place which means it takes time for the switch to reset unlike buckling springs which can be done almost instantly

Not entirely true. IBM had a quiet version where they packed the springs with grease. Apparently sticking a piece of string down the middle of each spring also has a similar effect.

>>
>>57122578
Not sure how badly you guys have it there, but I'm from Brazil, and there is a 60% tax on imports. If you want something good, either you gotta get something on AliExpress like that other anon suggested, and ask for the chinks to label it as gift and undervalue the item on the label, so you have less trouble with customs, and if you do you pay less, or probably just try to get something from Amazon, since they ship stuff internationally, though you do need to make a tax deposit.

I wouldn't buy the Poseidon ZX. I know a friend who had one, and in less than a year, a couple of his keys were either sticking really badly, or just straight up not working.

What do with my first gen Das Keyboard that has sticky switches on them (bought used for $25). Instead of trying to replace the switches, I opted to get a corsair strafe for $20 before I pick up a type heaven but I do want to keep this das around while not spending money on one of the newer ones (that i personally think don't look good with any of the media shit) and wouldn't mind buying switch replacements alongside the type heaven.

>>
>>57124205
some brands like corsair and razer charge more for their name despite other competitors offering similar features for a cheaper cost. Good brands do matter since they have warranties and plenty of support lines if anything goes wrong. A good mid range brand would be Ducky. Their keyboards sell for around 90-110 dollars (except for the RGB ones those are an extra 20)
>>
>>57124216

There are other things in the category too, like custom colors and such.

>>57124374
The under caps, the stem part, has no dishing. That'd be uncomfortable to type on.
>>
>>57124915
It's pretty much just the keycaps. Why pay the same amount for a board with bad keycaps when you could get one that has better ones, again, for the same price?
>>
>>57125166
Good point, but...

>>57124354
I think the barebones are pretty good if you're already planning on changing out the keycaps. No need to buy a board with caps that you're just going to set aside.

>Space Invader

Speaking of which, I've discovered a fairly simple solution to worn Hi-Tek switches binding.

As you may or may not know, Hi-Teks that have seen a lot of use or have been used in industrial settings have a tendency to get roughed up and this causes them to be less smooth, to the point where they can bind up when you press the bottom edge of the keycap where the switch has a lot of surface contact between halves of the housing. Meanwhile the other side has low surface contact so they don't bind when pressed on the other side. This is largely a problem for Row 4 since the sloped cap profile lends to hitting the raised bottom edge.

The solution: The switches are symmetrical and the keycaps will attach in either direction. Resolder the R4 switches upside-down, with the "mouth" of the space invader towards the top of the keyboard. The smoother side of the switch is now where it's more likely to be pressed.
>>
>>57095918
I'm obligated to appear here because my favorite keyboard for typing on is a space invader weirdie

Also gaze upon my old mech collection.
