I'm not sure what caused the front panel to yellow that badly, might try retrobright on it but I've heard that it's not worth it. This was my first computer and I don't want to screw it up.

>>57067768
The system actually is a 386DX system in some ways. Then again, it kind of isn't, because the mobo (Abit FA4) has full support for the Cx486DLC, which is a 486 chip (although it runs on the 386 bus). But it is indeed lacking the niceties you would expect on a 486 board (VLB, early PCI, really anything other than ISA slots).

But you can really tell it's a 486 by the fact that it can run DOOM at more than 6fps. Unfortunately, I still have to kick the screen size down a couple notches and play in low detail to get good FPS, but it's not too bad.

Also, nice 3dfx rig, what's in it?

Here's my 3dfx rig; I built this one from various parts on eBay (surprisingly, Intel 440BX-2 mobos are $25 NIB on eBay and Amazon)

Retr0bright is great, definitely worth it.

It does work, they say it makes the plastic weaker, but personally I don't have had any problem with that, scratching with my nail and tapping on it seems pretty fine to me.

Remove all badges and stickers before doing it, it will destroy them most likely if left on.

Thanks. It's the 33MHz version. I also have it paired with a ULSI Math-Co FPU.

>Just a Pentium MMX with a Voodoo 2 and AWE32
Nice. What card did you pair with the Voodoo 2?

I also have a Pentium MMX-166 system.
It doesn't have a Voodoo, though; instead, it has a Tseng Labs ET6000, which is one of the fastest VESA cards around, but not very compatible with DOS games. After finding out that it couldn't run Jazz Jackrabbit (or most Epic Games, or anything that runs in VGA Mode X), I reformatted and decided to install an old Linux distro. It's running Slackware 7 at the moment. Runs great.

>That's perfect for some UT99 action!
Heh, that's actually the game I play the most on it. That, and Unreal Gold. Such great atmosphere. I fucking love the Unreal series.
>>
>>57068241
>what I've heard is that retr0bright works well for a while, but the yellowing comes back with a vengeance a year or two later
I heard that too. The plastic is more prone to yellowing again if left exposed to sunlight/UV light.
If you keep retro shit, you keep it out of the sun anyways.

The subsurface bromine migrates to the now-clean top layer over the course of a few months. I re-treated the bezel of my 486 three times over the course of a few years and the yellow was lighter and took longer to come back each time. It has been around a year since the last treatment and the yellowing seems to have stopped.
>>
>>57068241
>Thanks. It's the 33MHz version. I also have it paired with a ULSI Math-Co FPU.
Nice, I have a 33MHz '020 that seems pretty same performance wise, 7-12FPS in Doom.

>Nice. What card did you pair with the Voodoo 2?
First it was a Rage128, swapped for a TNT2, but don't really use OpenGL, only Voodoo 2 with Glide.
Runs DOS games fine too.

There was a Voodoo 3 PCI, I don't know if it's still for sale for cheap, I should get it, it's pretty rare find.
Didn't think of getting it first, want another Voodoo 2 for SLI.

I think this is the big flaw with people's view of the past. Those were total SHIT. I'm fucking glad dial up and floppy disks and all that stuff is dead.

But it's what those things allowed that I miss. I miss the internet being a wild landscape of various small towns, rather than a cluster of towerblocks in the middle of a desert.
>>
>>57068394
This.

Well, dial-up and floppy disks where perfectly fine actually at their time.

Those days really were a great time. Internet was here and common but not highspeed was not widespread, so LAN parties were had all the time. File sharing responsibilities doled out and and then brought together 2 weeks later at the next party. Not to mention all the gaming tournaments. Good time to be a loser/nerd/tech teen.

Why tho? We play online, we share files online.
Much simpler and easier.

>>57068514
I agree, though it does make me sit back and think how good we have it now that I have a gigabit internet connection. Back then like the other guy said, even LAN was too slow, so we'd swap HD racks to speed up file sharing.

Many a bootloader was lost in the those days...

Why can't everything be still made in this retro design but just thinner and with better technology?

It is perfect. The light grey plastic looks clean but also warm. The design is made of basic geometric shapes with no superficial design elements. Why is this outdated today?

Yes, next up is a A1200 once Vampire comes out for it.

I always loved the 600, my brother had a 1200.
We do those things for enjoyment anyways, hobbies take money anyway.
>>
>>57068210
It would be saving space if people just uploaded Webm in the first place.
>>
>>57069237
The Vampire2 for the A500 has made the Indivision AGA outdated tech.
>>
>>57069290
For systems it runs on sure, but being there's no Vampire for the 1200 no go there.

And it looks like they are having issues even sourcing the edge connectors for any development/production so I"m not holding my breath.
>>
>>57069290
The Vampire for 500 and 600 suck though. They do almost all the chipset in the FPGA too, not just the CPU.
That's why I changed my mind on using it in my 600.

Might as well get a FPGA board machine and pop it into a Amiga case then. Even cheaper.

The 1200 variant with CPU accelerator only will be the thing to get.

the sram had a battery that was last changed in 1998 so anything that was on it is wiped. same with the other batteries in the pc.
any attempts using common dos commands is met with "bad command or file name"
