IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Depends on if the motor destroyed the platters when it died

The click click click is typical of a motor failure. What happens is the head is unable to seek because something has failed.

If you're a ballsy man you can open up the HDD and flick the head back into place. This will permanently contaminate the internals of the HDD but it might be enough to read some data off it.

Why do some X200s/X201s panel bezels look different? My new LCD is a lot prettier, but I'm confused as to why they have two different molds for the plastic, which seem to be on "s" or regular models with no rhyme or reason.

>>57037263
That's a hell of a machine compared to my previous R40. I had to use that brick of shit as my main computer with FreeBSD 9.x from 2013 to 2014. In 2014 I got the X201 and later a bunch of other thinkpads nobody cares to hear.
I had to use BSD because Linux's driver for the Radeon 7000 sucked so hard that the machine would not wake from suspension correctly. As if power saving was possible to begin with.

I remember playing a game of Starcraft II on my T400 back in the day, I got mad at something and slammed down on the computer with my fist. Next thing I know everything starts getting real slow and the computer begins locking up. On reboot, I had the same error as you.

Unlike you though, I backed my shit up weekly so I only lost 2 days of notes from class. Best of all I just RMA'd the hard drive to Western Digital and swapped in the original 160GB drive for a bit. But eventually I bought an SSD after the new WD drive started going bad.

>>57042979
I am so sick and tired of this meme. Yes, the speeds are a bit slower than native, but Expresscard adapters do NOT get hot as fuck as long as you do NOT buy the cheap chink ones. That being said, for the price of a good one, you could just upgrade to an i7 unit.

>>57043385

>>
>>57044961
I don't know. I am a linux noob, and when I initially installed Lubuntu on my thinkpad I had issues with power management and suspend not working, even after installing third party drivers from a PPA everyone recommended

So I'm currently running Ubuntu 64-bit 16.04 on my T430 and I love it

thing is, I didn't know about the battery DRM before and this used 6 cell is down to about an hour per full charge, can barely use the damn thing now. I have to have it plugged in all the time
>>
>>57045016
Damn. You run a test on the battery to try and find the actual capacity? Also, might wanna use the tlp package. Also, you could always install regular ubuntu and just manually install the LXDE or whatever desktop environment, that way you get the sweet sweet Ubuntu packaged drivers.
>>
>>57045041
Oh I get perfect functionality with stock Ubuntu now, even the FN buttons worked to my surprise

its just the shitty battery capacity - there is no way around it. I'll have to buy a new one.

what I hate though is that the DRM is there to begin with. is there even a way to bypass it?
>>
>>57045083
Yeah, you probably need a new battery.

Sorry mate, I have no experience with the DRM for that battery. I would just use some Google-fu and look for some hack, if there is one. Someone else in this thread might have experience with it.
>>
>>57044344
Windows 7 on my W520 (main workstation), Ubuntu on my T400 (travel computer). I use them both about equally.

>>57044921
It really depends. Windows is a total fucking pig, and my W520 felt consistently and frustratingly slower than my T400 with Linux, even when they were both running off hard drives. So if you plan to run Win 7 off a T400, logic dictates that the Core 2 processor will cause you some frustration. With Linux, I can say it is more than adequate, especially once you get an SSD. Ubuntu 14.04 is absolutely fine, no lightweight distro needed.

So, my x220 just arrived. Very clean, nothing broken. Win 7 with SP1 and Lenovo's shitty additions. Battery capacity is apparently at 94 Wh, that sounds pretty damn good to me.

No dead pixels, which is huge. Case is flawless, too. A few scratches on the side, a bit dust here, otherwise great. No complaints on my part.

So, what should I check/do first? What's the best way to extract the Windows key for future use - although I'll be switching to Linux.

Perhaps the regular X61 is more common? The TN panel is not much good for any media, though.
>>
>>57046285
Probably. The world will be a very shitty place if my X220 has trouble browsing the web or other basic stuff.

And with any luck, the Thinkpad Classic will become a reality, combining modern hardware in the tried and true casings.
>>
I should be getting my x220 in the mail tomorrow. I've heard that those things are loaded with bloatware. What's the best way to remove it? Should I just uninstall programs the normal way, or would a factory restore be better?
>>
>>57046187
There's nothing specifically wrong with them, they just aren't up to the ThinkPad quality a lot of us came to expect from the previous iterations. If you don't mind that keyboard, a T430 or T431 would probably serve you fine ( and even then, there are ways to transplant the keyboard from the prior model).

Am I the only person with an x250?

Picked it up from a dood on CL this past week for $300.

Has an i5-5300, IPS display, SSD, and a few other nice things, esp compared to my old T400 (R.I.P.).

The only things I've had to do are upgrade the ram (4GB -> 8GB, cost about $40), and mess with a bunch of font sizes, because the screen resolution is honestly a bit much for the form factor.

Other than that, it's super nice!
>>
Is a good price 230usd for a t430 with i5 8ram 500gb mint condition HD tn panel?
>>
Got a t420 here, can it run windows 10 without any problems?
>>
>>57047518
Easily. Windows 10 in general runs better than Windows 7/8/8.1.
>>
>>57044921

I have a T400 with a P8400 at 2.26GHz and if you throw 8GB of RAM and an SSD in it it's more than enough for general internet/media/shitposting needs using Windows 10. I use this machine for everything except movies and gayming. Only downsides of the model are that while 16:10 is objectively superior to 16:9 it'll be hard to find a 1440x900 model so you might have to settle for 1280x800.

Just make sure you get a model with the HD3470. Switchable graphics won't work on Linux or any Windows OS past 7 so you'll have to reboot and change a setting in the BIOS to switch between the Intel GMA and the discrete GPU, but there are times when it's nice having that extra graphical horsepower available.

Don't worry about getting one with the discrete GPU if you plan on using Core/Libreboot though, because they'll disable it and you'll be stuck on the shitty Intel chip anyway.
>>
>>57047666
will it run well on a X220T?
>>
>>57047695

If Windows 7 will run on it, Windows 10 will run on it. This goes for literally any model.
>>
>>57046149
Literally no reason to get the T510. If it had a 16:10 screen like the T500 then maybe, MAYBE you could make a case, but the T520 is so superior for such a small price increase, you would be daft not to get it.

>>57046508
I don't have very high hopes for the Classic, but God dammit I will run my W500 as long as I can, and hopefully replace it with a Classic. The one thing that worries me in that, if it does come out, it will be more like an X300 remake, which means low voltage processors.

I bought a 11e(not a "true" thinkpad, i know :( ) and the volume is messed up. Hit any of them again and it remutes it)

Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried updating the bios without any luck. Also tried contacting lenovo for support. No reply yet(Also, WTF at how hard it is to get a hold of them. Just to *ask* a question, i need to give them my serial number, create an account on a different website, and submit a ticket with my address and other shit... Theres no simple "contact us at this email address" or "submit a question" page on their site.)

Also, for anyone considering it... Dont. The bezels on the screen are ridiculously bad and the keyboard is shit compared to my T61. Its also too bulky to treat like a netbook.

>>
>>57051812
does it happen on battery and/or plugged in? Does it beep as it goes off? Is it *JUST* the screen the goes off, or does the entire thing power down? Does it *ONLY* happen once you're in windows(never prior to loading the OS, or while using other OS's)?

If its just the screen that goes out, you might just need to fidget with the cable, or replace the inverter. If its only after the thing loads windows, might just need to do a fresh install.

No. Should be about a hundred dollars for the base unit, then add on depending on the extras. That unit shouldn't be more than 140 if you're looking for a "deal."

Really, you'd be better off buying a parts unit, an 8gb kit, and the SSD separately.

No problem. I see some parts units up now for around 100 dollars. An 8gb kit cost 30 dollars and an SSD will be another 40-50 depending on the side (though with an ultrabay caddy you really won't need a large SSD).

You can get by with just buying a 4gb stick for 12 dollars to get 6gb if you are watching your money (most parts units will come with at least a 2gb stick already).

Naw, man. 200$ each. It's a pretty good deal if you consider that electronics and shit here are much more expensive.

Just bought an EXP GDC Beast off gaybest, hooked it all up with my RM 650 and my RX 480, turned it on and it didn't work. Running Arch, any clues?

Can T420 handle 720p video in mpv with interpolation enabled?

testpost from my new x220, thanks /g/, I fell for a good meme

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro that I want to upgrade to something lighter and better battery life, is it worth it to go for the X220 since it's cheaper but the i5 2520m still beats the CPU benchmarks of the i5 2435m in my Macbook, or should I grab the X230? I've upgraded my Macbook with 8 GB RAM and a 500 GB SSD that I can reuse in the Thinkpad.

The EXP GDC is the only reason why i'm using Windows 7 on my Thinkpad instead of Linux right now.
>>
>>57058183
Oh fuck yes, you could pull that shit off with a T400 so the much more powerful T420 should be able to do it no problem.

The only thing the x220 has is the keyboard. Otherwise the x230 is better in every way.

I know but I'm on a tight budget. I'll try to go for the X230 since I want a better GPU.

If there's no rush then just paitiently wait for a killer deal. Was able to get my x230 that had an ssd and 8gb ram for $160 on CL

Man, fuck these european ebay resellers. Their prices are a lot higher than the burgerlanders, which I can tolerate since electronics are more expensive over here. But these britbongs and germans are asking 25-40 euro in shipping, while I'm right next to them. The italians, who are considerably further away than they are, only ask about 10 euro shipping on average. It's annoying because it pushes most deals from being barely decent to not worth the money.

i'm in the same boat, where else can one look for a thinkpad, other than ebay ?

>where else can one look for a thinkpad, other than ebay ?

Supposedly there should be heaps of them on local secondhand sites, but I think it's just the Americans who are spoiled by craigslist. My local secondhand sites barely have any, and the ones they do have are from resellers who ask even more than ebay prices.

Anyone here bought refurbished from newegg on ebay before? I'm looking at the t420 for 219 bucks. I know its a bit more than normal.

Got my first thinkpad (T430) today (£215) with two batteries, perfect condition apart from an lcd bezel which is a bit loose (clicks if you push it in). Any suggestions?

What do you guys think of these?

The price seems good, and it apparently they were for office use.

yeah... i feel you.

someone said that 200Euros are a good price for used x230 here in europe... but can't seem to find any
>>
>>57060271
I wanted to get a cheap x201 or x220, with 8gb ram and a 128gb ssd either outright or to put in myself for under 200 euro, which I thought would be doable looking at the guide prices.

But that obviously hasn't worked out yet. I did find a t410 locally for about 90 euro, but I don't know about the portability/battery life of that thing. I'm also really sketchy on the thinkpad screens and how good they are for general media consumption, but I can't really judge that unless I see one in person.

It's certainly been a wild ride up until now, but I'm not giving up yet.

How come my battery is dying so quickly?
Ijust got my new t520, and it came with a 9 cell battery.
I charged it up fully last night but now its dying really quickly, saying only an hour left of battery life, when I assumed a 9 cell would get at least above 5h.

I have a sanyo 42t4799, I'm hoping that its some other issue and not that the battery is old/dead because I'd prefer not to have to buy a new 9-cell already.

battery wear, check with batteryinfoview,

Is it a good idea to try and get a Thinkpad with dedicated graphics? As in, does it help out with day to day tasks?
>>
>>57061180
doesn't work with lienux and I'm too lazy and dumb now to get it working

I assume it is battery wear since its dying fast and I'm barely doing anything.

will just live with it until I can get a new one.
also gonna try letting it die completely then recharging fully.
>>
>>57061232
Not for day to day tasks unless you do stuff like video editing
>>
>>57061232
Not worth it imo.

Integrated is enough for daily usage and eGPU works for heavy usage.
>>
>>57061300

In linux there's an application, Power Statistics, which tells you the battery model, serial number, energy when full and energy when full (design), among other things.

There you can see if it is battery wear or something else

Hey, so I just got an x220. I'm having two strange issues. First, everything is stretched. When using the default resolution, everything is widened out, but when I use the 960x600, it's all good. I installed the drivers they gave me and stuff, but that didn't help.

Second, there doesn't seem to be any way to change the screen brightness. The fn keyboard shortcut does nothing, and when I go into the battery settings, there's no option to fiddle with the brightness.

I have a feeling this might be a driver issue. What do you guys think?
>>
>>57061543
Driver issue. Download drivers from Lenovo.
