Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

A big thanks to the dude who answered my question on the eGPU (exp gdc) last thread. I did in fact have the expresscard setting to gen I so I guess that was not the concern Reason I had asked about the presence of dGPU was because the t420s BIOS has no way of addressing video changes bar a boot video selector (which seems wholesomely impertinent). Did you make any other changes in the BIOS other than the disabling of the network boot? Do you power on the exp gdc after POST?
>>
>>57008185
>Did you make any other changes in the BIOS other than the disabling of the network boot?
Nothing related to the eGPU as far as i remember.

>Do you power on the exp gdc after POST?
No i don't even touch the EXP GDC since it's inside a custom case i made for it. The EXP GDC along with the GPU and the PSU should turn on by itself when powering up the laptop.
>>
>>57008307
I'm gonna ask an even dumber question. Are you using solely a PSU to power this on? I had a corsair 750W one laying around and I figured that should be plenty for either a 680 or a 980 that my friend sold me for cheap.

Yes, a generic noname 500w PSU connected to the EXP GDC via its adapter thing and to the card 6-pin.

I still have the crappy trackpoint drawing i made for another anon about how to plug the exp gdc kek, pic related is my setup.
>>

Forgot to mention, Red = expresscard - hdmi cable, Blue = cables from the power supply.

Ao last time I came here(around a year or two), the only way tog et a 1080 screen to work on a thinkpad was to buy an adaptor or screen+adapter combo from some guy with a chink contact in really limited runs.

My questions is, has this changed? Can I now buy this easily from eBay or something, without needing to post in some other forum and be placed in a waiting list?
>>
>>57008643
No, nothing changed and the dude discontinued the project because of shipping problems.

What are the differences between the x220 and the tablet version? Why don't you guys ever recommend the x220T? Is it worse in some way?
And what about the x220 i5 vs. the x220 i7. I've heard that the i7 version overheats a lot. If I don't intend to use it for gaming, would that overheat be a problem?

I'm thinking on getting a T60, need it for writing word/powerpoint documents and very light web browsing. Multiple tabs may be used at times.

Will the core duo and 4gb of ram be enough? and If I were to install windows 10, how much slower would it operate compared to windows 7?

Are there appreciable performance gains between the x250 and the x260? I am gonna get the last of the core ones that aren't win10 locked (from gen 7 on) as I use a few windows exclusive programs for work but I do fear that their prices won't drop for this very reason.

Is there a substantial difference between the 6 and 9 cell battery? I also have a spare ssd to install, but it's 9mm which sucks as it won't fit
>>
>>57011885
The 9 cell has 50% more charge compared with the 6 cell.
Which translates into roughly 9h30min of system on time, compared with 5h or so on the 6cell (comparing new cells and conservative power settings).

My 9 cell is at 73% and gives me 7h or so.

What do you use to cover the wifi indicator on your Thinkpad x220 / x230?
It really is a distraction while watching chinese cartoons
>>
Fuck me I can't stand this shit anymore. There's a slight, barely but still noticeable , static-y sound coming over the speakers and headphones when I plug them in and its driving me crazy. Maybe not a software issue, tinkered with alsamixer and searched through google but can't find shit. Maybe some of you guys have had same issue, t430 btw.
>>
>>57013025
Use a black tape or something, although that's utterly retarded. Just connect your dankpad to the TV and watch your cartoons.

>>
>>57013293

DE versions are unrelated to kernel versions, you know you can just upgrade the kernel anytime you want, right?

That kernel doesn't seem to have any problem with sound, though.

Are the sound problems constant, the vary obver time?
Have they been plaguing the laptop since you have had it?

how long does the x60/61 battery last (6 cell vs 8 cell)?

>>57013337

>>
>>57013025

>>
>>57014218
Try windows then.
If the problem persists on windows, then your sound chipset is fucked (aka throw the motherboard out). If not, your Linux is fucked, so trash it and try again.

Maybe the hissing is really low and you're being autistical about it. Low hissing on laptops happens 90% of the time, because they don't have very good DAC's.
For example, my X230 has some hissing (small amount, really). I use an external DAC at home, though.

The tablet version is always about $50 more expensive for a feature that really isn't that great. I have a x220t. When I try and take notes with the stylus (which only happens occasionally), it draws about 0.5cm away from where the stylus actually touches.

If you do get an x220t, make sure you get the option with multi-touch. If you don't, you can't actually use your fingers on the screen like a regular tablet.

I own a standard T420, 320gb HDD' i5 2.5 ghz, 4gb ram. Can I put an SSD + an HDD on this laptop? I'm kind of unsure if I want only the SSD as this is my school laptop and I want it to last

i was planning on getting 8gb ram and maybe another processor but i'm a complete fuckwit so i have no idea how i'd go on about doing that. it's too slow to my liking, the boot time is pretty shit and when it comes off sleep mode it's just as slow.

can anyone offer me some advice on upgrading this laptop? i'm not very knowledgeable on computers, especially laptops.
>>
>>57020941
Yes you can by using the optical drive slot. However if you use an mSATA SSD instead of the usual 2.5" SSD you can have msata ssd + ssd/hdd + ssd/hdd for a total of 3 drives simultaneously.

Adding ram is 2 screws at most, easy job. The limit is 2 8gb sticks for a total of 16gb ram.

CPU upgrading is also pretty easy and you have plenty of options, I'm using a quad core i7 myself.

>>
>>57020941
You are worried about the SSD for the space or the reliability?

Get a 850 PRO for the later, a good SSD is way more reliable than a HDD.
Specially because you dont have to worry about the HDD getting damaged for movement/falls.

Adding ram is easy, just remove the screws, plug in and screw back.
Thats it.

>>57021041
ah, good to know. i should be safer with SSD only then? this is a laptop that gets hauled around a lot in between school and uni + everywhere else i might bring it along. maybe safer with two SSD's for reliability?

>>57021333
i am worried about SSD for reliability and I want faster speed in general; I don't want my shit to spontaneously stop working and lose my files. i don't plan on having much shit on there but i'm prettymuch typing all my notes so losing them would be pretty shit. also i will probably start to learn coding soon so i need something that isnt buttfuck slow, i hear compiling is a bitch. Should I buy two SSD's then? I bookmarked the one you linked me, so thank you for that

On a general note, should I look into a different model? I'm liking the T420 for everything it has so far but i'm scared about the upgrade possibilities, i think i read somewhere that laptop motherboards are not really replaceable, might be wrong though. Could I get usb 3.0 on this thing?

Thanks
>>
>>57022145
SSDs are way more reliable than HDDs when it comes to laptop use, even low end ones.

What you have to worry about is who makes them and which one have problems.
But if a SSD didn't came with factory errors it will live for 5-10 years, high end ones way more.

850 PRO is a High end SATA SSD and is really reliable, and inside a laptop it would get really light use so you dont have to worry about it going bad.

850 EVO is a cheaper version, still really reliable and usually the most recommended.

There is a gap in reliability from those 2 SSDs to the rest but that doesn't mean the others are bad, but for something are cheaper.

Avoid Kingston and PNY SSDs overall.

>TLDR
If you wanna a really good SSD and some paranoid tier reliability get a 850 EVO or PRO.
>>
>>57022145
>i'm assuming an i7 processor would be better because its better in general?
Well yes if you need the horsepower that is.

>i multitask between pdf, powerpoint and word docs + internet browsing among other shit.
Then it's not the cpu fault since the 2520m can handle that easily, your bottleneck seems to be the HDD.

>how's the temperature on it? i haven't check with mine yet but i don't want to burn my shit up.
My quad core i7 gets the same temperatures than when i had the stock cpu but some anons had worse temperatures, it depends.

I'm running msata ssd + hdd just fine but in my opinion occasional backups of your important files should be a common practice no matter the computer.

>i read somewhere that laptop motherboards are not really replaceable
Well this one it is.

>Could I get usb 3.0 on this thing?
Only via ExpressCard usb 3.0 ports, not the best solution though.

It's still better than usb 2.0 but worse than native 3.0
>>
>>57022279
Alright, thank you very much for your input. I looked into the 850 PRO and bookmarked it, I'll look into EVO as well and decide then. I should probably look into a better motherboard + SSD for my desktop as well then, it's an old piece of shit too lol

>>57022311
I'll replace the ram and get an SSD and reevaluate if I need a new processor then. I think USB 2.0 will suffice for now, I don't have lots of stuff to back up anyways, just some schoolwork. I'll look into do's and don'ts of backing up shit elsewhere. Thank you for your input as well.

For the ram, is there anything I should know? The T420 can handle up to 16gb, right? Is there a reason I shouldn't get 16gb? If I'm to buy ram for this laptop, is there a specific brand I should get, or brands I should avoid? Should I get DDR3 or DDR4? I don't really know the difference. I read that the DDR4 is faster but I have no idea if my T420 can handle it, or if it just bottlenecks. Sorry for all these noob questions.

On a side note, what are good sources where I can learn about this stuff? I look it up on google generally when I have a question or doubt but the results are inconsistent. Maybe that's due to my poor researching skills though lol

Thanks again for all your help.
>>
>>57022795
>For the ram, is there anything I should know?
One slot is in the back next to the msata slot (one screw) and the other is under the keyboard (one screw).

Also the T420 will downclock your ram to 1333mhz unless you use a custom bios, it's nothing noticeable or something to worry about though.

>The T420 can handle up to 16gb, right?
Yes, two 8gb sticks.

>Is there a reason I shouldn't get 16gb?
Not really, I'd get 16 outright since ram is sort of cheap.

>If I'm to buy ram for this laptop, is there a specific brand I should get, or brands I should avoid?
All ram is the same shit.

>Should I get DDR3 or DDR4?
DDR3/DDR3L.
You'll need SO-DIMM sticks of 1333MHz or 1600MHz DDR3 (PC3-10600 or PC3-12800) or DDR3L (PC3L-10600 or PC3L-12800), ddr3l uses 1.35v instead of 1.5v, both are compatible but if you get a 1600 MHz it'll downclock to 1333 MHz as i said above.

>On a side note, what are good sources where I can learn about this stuff?

I know who I quoted. Re-read my post :p
My TLP config is just the default one. Haven't gotten around to tinkering with it and doubt I will seeing as how battery is fine for more than a days work. Had to add some stuff to GRUB in order to get suspend to work though, maybe that helps as well. Again, haven't really bothered to check as my goal was just to get suspend to work proper.
Many factors weigh into battery life though. HDD or SSD, mSATA or SATA SSD, your comfort level of display brightness, drivers, how and what work you do on your machine, if you have everything (BT, FP reader etc.) enabled. And I am probably forgetting some factors.

Why does my X230 perform so much better when on battery than my T420s with i7-2620m?

The i7-2620m goes down to 800MHz when on battery, and this i5 on my X230 goes to about 1198MHz

Does that 400MHz really make that big difference or what could make my X230 so much faster and smoother on battery compared to the T420s, 420 has 8GB of RAM and a better SSD too, while the X230 has worse SSD (V300) and 4GB of RAM, still performing much smoother

Hi, i have a huge problem with lenovo think pad.. I brought dock station for my t410 and after i plug in the external monitor to the station notebook doesn't display red color on a that monitor. I read that it's a problem with T410 not the station and now i'm pissed off... 2 months ago i tried to clean the fan and there was a problem with it. You cannot clean it, you can only buy another one. This is sick for me. Are there similiar notebooks that don't cause problems? I mean Dell ones or HP.

Since prices are pretty whack over here in europoorland, I was going to pick one o fthe less powerful machines. I'm only going to use it to do some office work on the train, maybe watch some weeb cartoons, but that's pretty much it. I'm just having trouble deciding between the x220 or x201.

I'm probably not going to go for a T410 or T420, since portability and battery life are the most important here. Portability would probably not be a huge issue, but the T series battery life is worse than the X series, right?

Also found a X131e with AMD E2 1,7GHz and a 128gb ssd for about 150 euro. The guide doesn't really mention it at all though. Any opninions on this?

Btw guys, I don't know much about hardware but:
Those 5 year old (second-hand) laptops, won't suffer from deterioration? Specially the CPU and its fan, how much time is this component supposed to last? I doubt that it would last 10 years or so. That would mean that for us, second-hand buyers, the life of our thinkpads wont reach 5 years.
Am I wrong? Do they last more?

I cleaned but it was fucked up because Lenovo puts plastic rivets in the fan to protect it from cleaning... I removed them and after cleaning i tape up the whole fan.
>>
>>57030512
i've cleaned my t410 a couple of times and there were no plastic rivets. just had to change the fan of mine
>>
>>57030531
Wait, so were there any screws in your t410 fan? Or how it's connected to the copper/steel part. In my case there was something like this:

http://laptopbattery-buy.com/images/img3/IBM%20Lenovo%20T410%20T410I%20CPU%20FAN.jpg

I cleaned many notebooks and this was the first one that haven't got any screws. Maybe i'm wrong but in my case there were plastic rivets with glue or something at the bottom.

It has a fucking retarded keyboard layout. Just look at this shit

>Removal of media keybinds in favor of redundant Windows ones.
>No more dedicated volume mute up and down and microphone mute buttons
X230 was acceptable but X240 just went fuck my shit up
>>

Mine looks the same by the side like that and it isn't IPS. Twist it towards you and if colors get all fucked up then it's not an IPS
>>
>>57030633
Well there were no screws it it..

But now i have bigger problem. I don't want to pay service for removing old notebook/dock connector and put new one or buy another main board and just change it.

So I'm thinking about changing the whole notebook for something that's not as annoying as my t410.
I was thinking about adding 8gb of ram to it but now after that incident with dock station i don't know what to do. Seriously i need something that will give me ability to connect two external monitors and hide cables from my desk like a dock station with ports behind the connected notebook.
>>
What kind of battery life can I expect on a t410/420? I'm going to spend some time in places where I'm not guarenteed to have a plug for the charger for several hours, so I'm wondering if I shouldn't go for an X201 or X220 instead.

80% 6 cell I got ~4h if not watching YouTube videos
>>

Hmm, so with most secondhand batteries I'd probably get less than that.

Do the x201 or x220 get much better battery life than that? I'm not sure I want to lug around a T410/20 with a 9 cell battery all the time in these cramped underground archives.
>>

Not "a lot" really but since it has ivy bridge instead of sandy bridge the iGPU is somewhat better, oh and usb 3.0 but worse keyboard layout.

I'd put my money on 5 hours. Older laptops sucked in terms of power efficiency, and you'd only be able to get either an OEM battery that now sucks out of age, or a chinese knockoff one that sucks because chinese knockoff, although they're underrated from what I hear.

And what model is it?
>>

Right now it has a battery that charges up to 28% and lasts 55 minutes while fucking around

Logically it should get about 3 hours with a topped up battery, but i'd only use this to take notes on nano/vim

I have three roughly working batteries, do you think i could break out a multimeter and slap together a working one with the decent cells?

>$250
>financing

God fucking damn even I wasn't that much of a poorfag in school. In fact that's pretty much what I made from a week's worth of part time work. Unless you're facing down a $1,000+ purchase, just use cash.

As for your needs, you could do very well with a used X200, which can easily be had for $120 or less depending on specs and condition. If you can sacrifice a little portability, a T400 would give you more screen real estate, and costs about the same. You could also get them with a dedicated card, but honestly it is completely worthless for any game made after 2011.
>>
>>57008031
just a little question for us living in Europe : are Thinkpads supposed to be significantly cheaper for us than for the US ?

I've found a used X220 for 180€ and a X230 for 250€.

Are those normal prices, higher than usual or acutally really interesting ?

I might actually fall for the ThinkpadTM meme..
>>
>>57028781

Did ok. Debian and Ubuntu literally just works. In Debian you just have to enable two-finger scrolling in the mouse settings, and of course supply the iwlwifi firmware from debian's nonfree repo because ofc there's no foss driver for the wifi card.
>>
I bought a T430, and the fan is always working at around 3700 rpm and making noises, is that normal or should i do something? (What?, options besides tech support)
>>
So, I just migrated my Arch on a T420 from a stock WD Black to an okay-level crucial SSD. Got btrfs set up, pretty happy with it.

What I've noticed however is that the EFI vars seem to be shadowed. I could only delete boot entries from BIOS and only add new ones by setting one of my added entries to BootNext and then rebooting. Is that just efibootmgr being bad or is the EFI firmware actually shit?

Fell for the thinkmeme & bought a X230t on Sunday. Pricey @ $275 but it came with a 9-cell, a Win10 license, and next-day shipping.

Very comfy. Keyboard is responsive in my opinion but I don't have a 220 to check against. Backlight bleed's a bit annoying but nothing severe.

Could've gone for the X220t I guess, but wanted Ivy Bridge for the USB 3 & reduced power consumption/heat.

I have a lot of spare parts sitting around so I already put in 8G wams & an 850 EVO. Plan on upgrading the wireless to AC but haven't disassembled it properly yet.

Any tips on what to do after?

Got my first ThinkPad for just $120. It's a W530. I'm loving the keyboard, speed and TrackPoint. My only complaint is that the screen is TN and despite having an i7 and NVIDIA Quadro K2000 GPU, 3D performance is fucking horrid.

Should I get a different model? Can I put a classic-style keyboard or an IPS display into it?
>>
>>57010378
Try installing the new feature drivers from Nvidia. Lenovo ships the enterprise ones that don't perform as well.
>>
>>57033278
do this
>>57033531
and also set up Optimus manually, using integrated by default and setting programs to use the dedicated card individually. The auto-detection is shit and almost never works for the programs you want it to.

No IPS display, but the 1080p screen is incredibly good for TN. Fantastic colors and even serviceable viewing angles. Not on the level of IPS of course, but a far cry from the trash in the T420/T430.
