Ur mum is a meme :-D
>>

Let me explain.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.
>>
>>57034122
>Kernel bloated with literally all modules available,
Oh you again. Proves how boring your life is for actively springing on a specefic distro.

The kernel parameters can be set according to your autism spectrum before installation. Not that you would know because you never really installed Arch.

Employed people use a kernel that works.

>packages twice as huge as on other distros,

Wrong. I always give you a simple example: install screenfetch. It's just a bash script. However, debian decides to install scrot as a dependency. The repo of debian is bloated no matter what you do with your package manger, it's not going to change anything on debian repo servers.

>the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.
If you need an installer there is architect, arch anywhere and antergos.

Text installers are objectively far more flexible

Debian based systems have splitted repos for free and nonfree stuff, you can also run vrms to soo which installed packages are nonfree.

Use compton or compiz if LXDE, use kwin if LXQT imo.

also, LDXE and LXQT really isn't made for high performance graphics if you didn't notice. if you use KDE, unity, or GNOME, you should get tear-free rendering out of the box. They're the "just werks" desktop environments. You can also try the wayland flavors of those DEs, or enlightmenment 17. Wayland doesn't have screen tearing.

Either freedom or not, but nitpicking with special "freedom guidelines" for repos, but allowing blobbed drivers at the same time is just stupid.

Do you know TempleOS? Check it out, it's fun to just mess around in. It's an OS made for recreational programming that's ring 0 only so it lets you access everything from anywhere, it's like old commodore64 but for modern cpu architectures. It's like 20MB and you install it in a VM in minutes.

Gentoo has live builds that pull from git that work better than stable packages in AUR.

Thats how big the disparity between the two is.

One is maintained by professional developers, the other is a ftp that skids upload shit to with built in twitter feeds on every package.

Stable is usually a point release, so I'm saying that random shit pulled with git on portage has a higher success rate than an actual versioned binary package pulled from AUR because AUR has no quality control and the packages are broken.

Yeah, because 3rd party repositories
- have no official support from Fedora
- take longer to update & maintain stability with the latest versions of Fedora
- require extra work to find and install/configure for use

Debian is 100% free, but can easily take advantage of officially* unofficial** nonfree repositories.

*because they're hosted on Debian's site along with info about them

But yeah, they have a cool DE and bunch of apps. I've only played with it in a VM a bit. Whenever it is mentioned, people are usually praising it and from what I've seen it has a lot of polish.

I maintain some older stuff at work, so I use Debian to avoid any incompatibility/fuckery. Also, I have seen a few "gaming channels" on YouTube make "how to install Arch Linux" videos. I think your point is kind of dumb.

These are the kind of people that only install Arch to say "I'm cool because I'm running an operating system that's not Windows".
They don't actually understand the commands that they're putting into the terminal, they're just regurgitating it from tutorials they found on the internet.

All right KDE masters... I have a question. I've Installed KDE over regular Ubuntu with Unity and I've rebooted and logged in and selected KDE Plasma and my info says I'm running "KDE Plasma 5.6.5",

Dolphin works fine and all the native Qt applications look fine and work well.

However, GNOME applications like Firefox look weird. For example, this is the file picker from Firefox (pic related).

Is it possible to get the KDE file picker for GNOME applications so I can see thumbnail previews of pictures?

Dunno.

Because it can be built 100% for the server's specific needs with every little thing being optimized for its combination of hardware and software, on top of being as stable as it needs to be for any given purpose. Gentoo is a great choice for a server.
RHEL and CentOS are good choices for a server.
Debian is a shitty choice for anything, don't fall for the 3 years old software meme.

Dear /fglt/

I am into video games, owning a huge steam library. Not all of the games I own are linux compatible or not available on steamOS.

Can you please tell me what the benefits are for someone who uses a computer much more for gaming, (mmo's, high-end games, modifications) than someone who doesn't?

I own a netbook, a samsung galaxy tab, a laptop and a (broken) desktop and another (fixed) low end office dell computer. What would suggest throwing into the fire and going all-in on a linux build.

I've used Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Lubuntu (netbook)

I know, babbys first distro. I'm willing to go all in with linux, I just don't know what I will get out of it.

Thanks for reading anon.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Gentoo is shit for servers which is why nobody uses it for that purpose.
>>
>>57036254
Interesting. IS there a guide or something that I could follow?

My biggest percieved benefit of KDE is the file picker and if I can't get it in Chrome or FF, KDE is useless to me.
>>
Glad to see I've got some fans XD

>>57036217
kek I saw you in a smart phone thread hahaha

Alright: Firefox is a gtk application, it will call for the gtk file chooser so installing KDE is not going to solve the problem

However if you have things like konqueror installed, chromium and Qupzilla will give you KDialog

>Is it possible to get the KDE file picker for GNOME applications so I can see thumbnail previews of pictures?
Not universally, no. There used to be a firefox patch and an addon called kmozilla helper but they are not maintained anymore afaik

X server is out-dated, ill-suitable for today's graphics hardware and basically all the direct video card communication is done as an extension ("patch") over the ancient bloated core. The X server provides no builtin means of synchronization between user rendering the window and the screen displaying a window, so the content changes in the middle of rendering. This is one of the well-known issues of the X server (it has many, the entire model of what the server does and is outdated - event handling in subwindows, metadata about windows, graphical primitives for direct drawing...). Widget toolkits mostly want to gloss over all this, but tearing is still a problem because there is no mechanism to handle that. Additional problems arise when you have multiple cards that require different drivers, and on top of all this, opengl library has a hard-wired dependency on xlib, so you can't really use it independently without going through X.

Wayland, which is somewhat unenthusiastically trying to replace X, supports a pedantic vsync synchronization in its core, and is advertised to have every frame exactly perfect.

If you quickly google wayland video tearing you'll find more information on everything.

But that's wrong, anon. Gentoo is popular on highly specialized servers. Even though this alone is something of a niche, there are corporations that use it for (some of) their servers.

While it's true that it's not the most common choice, and for good reason as RHEL/CentOS are both more than good enough for general purpose servers, saying that no one uses it is false.

Google services aren't inherently unethical or nonfree. Most of the things they make are proprietary to some extent. Lots of things are also licensed as free software. I've not found any evidence of them being caught doing anything unethical (besides promoting/making/maintaining any proprietary software), even after lots of looking.

The Google service I'm using, reCAPTCHA, is licensed under a free license (the modified BSD license) and isn't running any nonfree software on my machine because it isn't making use of obfuscated javascript. So fuck off with your "Google = evil" non-argument.

Mostly bspwm, i3 (gaps mod), awesome (lain mod), and dwm, but there are a lot more. Here's a nice overview: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Comparison_of_tiling_window_managers

That said, there are programs like pytyle etc that you can run in addition to your current WM.

Anyone know of any tips/troubleshooting cheatsheets on what to do when something goes wrong wiht Linux?

For example, the other day, my computer just froze. I had to hit reset button to reboot. What should have I done instead?

Another time I booted to black screen. No DE, no splash. Had to hit reset again.

Do you guys keep some kind of a USB key to boot into Linux when shit hits the fan? Which one? Is there like a recovery distro like there is for Windblows?

Please share some tips with a noob.

Is remote desktop good on Linux?

I believe that I saw a video where a dude was able to start up his laptop and load directly into his desktop's desktop session remotely. Does that work very well nowadays? Would there be issues if, say, I did that and tried to watch a video?

Why would you do that instead of streaming the video to your laptop from your desktop or sharing the directory where the file is and opening it with your media player?

I tried a few command lines I found on ubuntu forums but it doesn't work, I still get this error. This is weird.

Is there a good expansive mpv ricing guide?
bomi is a buggy piece of trash and I want to achieve comfiness of bomi in mpv: sane on screen controls, some keyboard shortcuts for controlling brightness and stuff, etc.

Installing pepper flash is just a pain. I just spent an hour trying to have it install through ubuntu packages. It still doesn't work and I have tried all the google results up to page 7. I probably broke my OS in the process.
I don't think it will ever be the year of linux desktop.

sudo apt install pepperflashplugin-nonfree

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add - ; sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google.list' ; sudo apt update && sudo apt install google-chrome-stable

Or

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

0/10
>>
>>57041563
>sudo apt install pepperflashplugin-nonfree
That's how I installed it. It threw me a public key error from google (pepperflashplugin-nonfree is just a downloader for pepper flash).

I just used :

>wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add - ; sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google.list' ; sudo apt update && sudo apt install google-chrome-stable
And it installs chrome... Well, I don't want this google crap, I'm up for a full reinstall.

It's just the downloader, once the package is installed it is supposed to go to google repositories to get pepper flash. The problem was when it did that it couldn't find a public key or whatever and it aborted the installation.

This post here >>57041563 fixed the key problem it seems (no I have google repo public keys) but it installed flash automatically so now my system is tainted with google smear.

And troubleshooting Windows is different?
Actually it is. A bunch of 13 year old recommend you to run some shady EXE to "clean your registry".

blablabla

Well. I'll just boot on windows for a while.

Yeah.

The difference between Windows and Linux though, is that you have to break Linux in order to learn how it works. You learn little other than "don't fucking pirate shit or download random stuff you mongrel" on windows
>>
>>57041736

One time I installed a package from the Arch User Repository. It was practically the same.
