Perfect pic to start, since I have a related question. I took the kb out the hunk of plastic because the zmk500 is way too tall for me, and while it makes a huge difference in terms of feedback and noise (for the better), is it okay to keep it out just like that? I don't eat next to the pc or anything like that, so other than dust no risk of getting it dirty. I added a few rubber feet to the back to rise it, the pcb is sitting on a towel, not directly on the desk.

For some reason the Ducky keyboards are 20 bucks more expensive then what they are supposed to be but the Ducky One is $99 and has a few extra features like a backlight and macros on mechanicalkeyboards.com

If you want to stick on amazon then you have E-Element which make knock offs of corsair keyboards. They have all sorts of model so pick one that you like.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_5?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=e-element&sprefix=e-ele%2Caps%2C216

Now if you don't like the look of corsair then Monoprice is another option
https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Enthusiast-Backlit-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B0170WDZ5C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1476222461&sr=8-3&keywords=monoprice+keyboard

And there are also other keyboards from CM
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Cooler+Master+keyboards&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ACooler+Master+keyboards

If you want a specific look and style for your keyboard just say so.

Because the keyboard is not worth that much trouble and I like my tall profile keys, it's the keyboard itself, the case, to be outrageously tall. I have a good diy keyboard rest but it's still too tall overall. Now that I lowered it it feels so much better.

Its nice how mechanical keyboards have gotten cheaper thanks to the Chinese, not only that some of them even have great build quality and lots of features. Now when will the same happen to custom keycaps that aren't in OEM profile? I want cheap spherical keycaps like on old keyboards and SA profile.

I want these and capacitive buckling springs to be available in mainstream keyboards.

Matias switches are a good start but they're only simplified whites and lack the beefy construction of complicated blues.

Likewise modelfkeyboards is the only place making capacitive springs but the premium is too high and the faux retro design just isn't very useful, especially when the bezel defeats the purpose of the compact version.

How snug are PCB mount switches supposed to sit?
I just got my GH60 in the mail, and the switches I got were PCB mount (still going to have a plate for mounting, waiting on that in the mail), the switches do not go into the slots properly, which was to be expected (Gateron switches have been reported to do this), so I need to sand down the pegs some, but I'm uncertain by how much. I could just clip them off but I don't see the point when I can just sand them.
Is it supposed to be snug? Should there be some wiggle?
>>
>>57036820

That's the problem. We need based Chin to fire up the child labor.
>>
>>57037049
It should be snug. Wiggle means the peg isn't doing its job and those forces are going into the solder joints.

lets be honest here there isn't enough demand. This switches are complicated and use a lot of material, even more then cherry so quality control, cost of materials, and production time all need to be higher. This results in an expesnive switch that wont sell as much since everyone believes cherry mx are the best mechanical keyboards out there.
>>
>>57037315

You underestimate people. We've already got ALPS and Topre clones (and not just Novatouch for the latter), both of which suffered from similar adoption problems.

People do not believe cherry is the best switch
>>
>>57037426
Not on here, but go onto any mainstream tech blog/forum and everyone believes that cherry MX switches are the best. They fall for all the marketing like how cherry testes their switches in freezing temperatures and they are rated for 60 million key presses, etc.
>>
>>57037475
It's 50 million, and they can legitimately say they've tested them to that measure.

They're still scratchy, obnoxiously high-pitched pieces of shit to actually use though.
>>
>>57037583
Its funny I fell for the cherry meme for my first mechanical keyboard and one of the switches would get stuck for some reason. I could have sent the keyboard back but I just kept on mashing the key until it jumped back to life.
>>
>>57033733
I don't like any of the ones you linked honestly.
>>
>>57035031
i find that the keycool 84 and other boards that share same oem (so i've heard) like drevo gramr and mk84) have absolutely awful rattling stabilizers.

it's a shame, 75% is my favorite layout. also greetech browns are definitely worse than cherry browns. scratchier (some squeak occasionally) and inconsistent.

Space isn't mandatory for most Japanese writing, so presumably, along with left and right arrow and others, it's hidden on some other layer, probably accessed by the green and magenta shifts.
>>
>>57038567
>>57039416
One of those shifts is probably a space key, they're usually like that on a 40%. And the user of the keyboard probably isn't Japanese.
>>

Yeah it's okay. Just try not to spill anything on it since any liquid directly on the pcb will kill your keyboard pretty quick.

Any thoughts about Anne Pro? I wanna get it as my first 60%, read up on it and the general consensus is that it's decent except for some small inadequacies like stabilizers rattling a bit, but that can be fixed easily.

About to pre-order it, good idea? I get that there are way better 60%'s, but I want an RGB one and don't have a lot of money to kill. None of my boards have been RGB or 60 so far, so I want to get one.

If you want a nearly indestructible keyboard then get an IBM model F The entire thing except for the outer cover is made of metal. There is a new production run but they are very expensive and use higher quality materials compared to the ones you can get on ebay for much cheaper.

Good luck w/ that... The 6GV2 uses an incredibly non-standard layout with a bigass enter key.

Those caps are for ISO, and they won't fit. Just look at the enter.

You could potentially find some replacement caps on TaoBao, Aliexpress, or some old keyboard that has the same layout, but it's more worth your time to just get a new keyboard.

I have a very specific use case: I don't want to buy a laptop to take around with me to write notes in uni so I want a small, preferably low profile, mech keyboard to connect to my phone (S3). At this point, I don't care if I look autistic as fuck.

>Budget
I would like to keep it under $100.
>Location (continent at least)
Australia
>Preferred switch type
Quiet (very important) and tactile.
>Layout
ANSI
>Form factor
60% I suppose.
>Backlight
No.
>Previous/current keyboards
Nothing worth noting, just rubber domes.

Oh christ that's ghastly.

Thinking of this with Matias quiet click. I know I said under $100 but I guess this is reasonable.
Y/N?

Who SpaceInvader here?

There was a guy selling several fully working boards with the clicky vaders in my area a while back for $35 each, but I hesitated and they were all gone the next day. How badly did I fuck up?
>>
>>57067648

The Matias switches are delightful but it has pad-printed caps so front-printed legends are a must.

A little cheaper here: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1476
>>
>>57067663
pretty badly if they were ANSI, otherwise that's just under the going rate for ISO/frankenshit ones.
>>
>>57067745
The one I was looking at was ANSI. Fuck.
>>
>>57067719
Actually, that's more expensive because USD > AUD conversion.
>>
>>57062161

Probably. Old 725 n stuff used complicated ALPS but that's really old. It is probably mechanical though.

>>57067663

I passed one up for $2.50 once. Shoulda got it im really sad I don't have a space invaders board in my collection

Many of their boards with the huge backward-L enter and tiny backspace are actually convertible.

Pic related. The PCB on the RT8256CW has properly wired through holes for ANSI backspace + slash + enter.

You'd need to mod the plate a bit but that's no big deal, and the stabs are a non-issue since they mount to the switch rather than the plate.

>I passed one up for $2.50 once.

Wow I think I'd want to try drinking bleach after missing that deal.
>>
>>57068115

I have tons of mechanicals lol. I'm not a big fan of clicky switches either. I wouldn't use it. It would just be another keyboard in the collection. So I guess its better it ended up in someone else hands.

Just wipe them down with a damp cloth and use warm, soapy water to clean the keys. It's worked for both my Filco and my HHKB.

That's pretty retarded. Japanese has 46 different syllables, this keyboard only has 27 of them. Also for some dumb reason there is katakana on the keys and not hiragana. And inputting japanese needs the space key too, to change kanji/kana for homophones.

Got mine at the flea market for $7. The switches are nice and smooth and the click isn't too loud, but the hysteresis is annoying. I also heard that these NMB keyboards aren't fun to take apart.

I have a 101-key with black space invaders I took apart for cleaning and there was nothing unusual about it. A few screws held the case together and two held the PCB to the bottom shell. The keycaps lever off easily and stabilizers don't need to be unclipped from caps.

I could see someone having trouble if they used a key puller though. NMB caps are removed by levering to unclip, not pulled straight up.

Oi m8s

I just bought my first MKG. I am typing on it now. Never typed on one before. Can anyone tell me what the big whoop is? It actually takes me longer to type the key since the depression distance is higher, and consequently I type slower than my low profile apple keyboard.

What gives? Did I fall for the meme?

I found similar keycap in aliexpress and wondering if I should order from ali instead.

I'm using the same keyboard right now and it's a joy to use. I like Apple aluminum keyboards but they cramp my hands, and I think it's because of the steepness.

Give it a week.

You dont need to fully depress the key for it to register.

Aren't you the one complaining about the travel distance? Well, typically scissor switches actuate at 2.3mm (at bottom). Cherry switches actuate at half travel, 2mm. Cant see how the difference is "negligle".

Btw, gaterons actuate even higher.
