Hey /mkg/, looking for my first mechanical keyboard. Was using one at my summer job and I was pretty convinced.

>budget

>preferred switch type
I'm not entirely sure, but I think brown or clear. In any case, I don't want a really loud keyboard.

>layout
ANSI

>form factor
80% / TKL

>backlight
Not required, but if I can get one with it that's not a lot more expensive, then that would be cool.

>previous/current keyboard
I've never owned one in my life.

thanks!

Question for anyone with a 60% keyboard, Do you feel that the keyboard is too light with a plastic case? I'm building out a GH60 with an aluminum plate mount, the only thing I haven't ordered is the case itself. >>
>>56988631
Unicomp is located in Kentucky so they aren't chink. Secondly they bought the tooling to produce model M keyboards and buckling springs from IBM, but they don't have all the equipment so they are lacking. Compared to the IBM model M they are of similar quality, but the Model F' are much better then both
>>
>>56988727
>>56988693
fuck srry
>>
>>56988814
Unicomp's product line historically consists mostly of IBM or Lexmark-originated designs, or slight modifications of those designs. For example, Unicomp's Classic (formerly called Customizer) 101 is essentially a renaming of IBM's 42H1292 (a later variant of IBM's Model M) keyboard, with the same non-detachable cable, drain holes in case of beverage spillage, and built on the same machines as the original. Other than the manufacturer's logo, the only changes to the Classic 101 from IBM's 42H1292 are the additional option of a black-colored case with lighter-gray keys and availability of the keyboard with a USB cable.

A lighter variant of the Unicomp Classic containing thirty percent less plastic is sold under the name Ultra Classic (formerly called SpaceSaver). A variant of the Ultra Classic, still sold under its former name as the SpaceSaver M, is intended for Macintosh computers as a buckling-spring replacement for the laptop-style Apple Keyboard. Special requests are also handled, at additional cost.
>>
>>56988860
shit forgot to add the source

Unicomp's entire product line is manufactured in the United States at their Lexington factory, and include an 18-month warranty, except for the Value Plus/SK-720C and SK-7500 wireless, which are manufactured by contract manufacturer SiliTek, a division of the Taiwanese peripheral manufacturer LiteON.

Preferaly from 70 to 100 USD, but if I realize it's worth it, I can spend around 150 USD.
>Location (continent at least)
Latin American, but I think I'll buy on e-bay
>Preferred switch type
I think red switches. I don't want the keyboard to be very loud, and I think less activation force is better.
>Layout
Latin american, I hope it doesn't complicate things that much.
>Form factor
I would prefer 80% (without numpad), but if I find a cool 100% keyboard, I'd proably buy it.
>Backlight
I don't care.
>Previous/current keyboards
I have a Samsung laptop, and the keyboard was ok, but it broke, and I bought a Logitech K120 (membrane). I sucks, keys feel loose, and it seems like it needs more force to activate (I'm not sure though), but if I'm writing fast I make a lot of mistakes, sometimes some keys aren't pressed.

Consider I will use it for everyday purposes, and gaming.

Thanks in advance.

The switches themselves look the same, but the ones on the board say that they're "DIY" switches, but aren't they pretty much the same as standard plate-mounted switches?

Yes, Gateron and Cherry MX share the same socket type. from the image supplied they appear to be using plate mount switches (that could be just some shitty stock image, but lets be fair it wouldn't make sense to have the hot swapable with PCB mount. You should be perfectly fine. That ebay seller is a guy I've bought from many times before, fast shipping, never given me a problem.

They are about the same price so I have to find something to get decided.
I like the HHKB for its meme status (it's the board of Mr. C++) but it seems to be a pain in the ass a priori : no backspace, arrows, home nor page up/down without using the fn.

On the other hand, the realforce looks more comfy for daily use but looks plain and have less choice should I want to change the key caps later.

About keycaps, how much for a HHKB blank set? (Use the printed until I get used to the keybinds and then shift to the blank)

You can use backspace on HHKB without fn key if you use the 3rd dip switch. Blank keycaps seem to go for $78 here https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,toprekeys&pid=pdkb400ktbn

Its up to aesthetics at this point. the v60 feels incredibly solid. Its either the case or the keys that you like more. I guess poker 3 cause the keys are cheaper than the case if you were to upgrade or switch cases.

But if you find the v60 is at a better pricepoint it is a top quality keyboard.

It's a fashion accessory. It's very expensive for what you get and the build quality isn't even all that good. For a "hacking" keyboard it's not even programmable like some of its competition. It also makes a lot of noise that does not coincide with the actual switch actuation because of how the plungers are case-mounted.

It's the keyboard equivalent of a hipster's fixed gear bicycle with a playing card through the spokes to make motor noises.

E-element or whatever they call themselves now are basically a chink knock off of corsair. They use Outemu switches which are one of the poorer cherry clones on par with kalih/ Even though I've never used that board I can tell you that compared to cherry switches they will be heavier and have a deeper pitch. They consistency between the switches will vary as they don't have the same quality control as cherry. It wouldn't surprise me if some of their switches feel loose.

It's decent. The keycaps aren't the best but I think most people overstate how bad they are.
It has a pretty unusual layout with the 0 and 00 keys, plus a non-standard bottom row, so it'll be difficult for you to get nice replacement caps.

Matias quiet clicks because they're very tactile and I can't be making a tremendous amount of noise where it's used.
>>
>>57005203
I have plenty of different keyboards. I had an IBM model M for a while, but they keys after long typing sessions my fingers would get tired, so I wanted to get a lighter switch and I tried out reds which have half the actuation force of buckling springs. I liked the weight, but the lack of tactile feedback was annoying so I bot blues instead. They feel nothing like my Model M, but I like the reduced weight. If I'm only typing for a short time I'll use my model M since I like how clicky and tactile it is. If its longer typing sessions then I'll use my blues.

>>
>>56999635
It's not a terrible idea in theory, but the deal is they don't have some kind of special wrist magic.
It's kind of like buying weight loss shakes and then drinking them in addition to the diet that made a person fat in the first place. They can only help if you make the effort in the first place (to diet or to have good typing posture), and if you're making the effort, you may not even need the special aid.

If you sit with the middle of the home row pointing straight at the middle of your body, with your upper arms next to your torso (ideally with your elbows gently resting on your chair's arms), and never, ever, bend your wrists, you're already more than half way there. Sure, your arms are rotated in, but assuming you have human hands ["keyboard_mash.xkcd" - ""], the natural curl of your fingers is typically sufficient to put most keys in the right places. The ergonomic split is a little more comfortable, and makes it a little easier to not rotate and flex your wrists constantly, but it won't do the work on its own.

I've owned MX Cherry red and outemu(sp?) red switches and I love them but sometimes I bottom out the keys very fucking hard and I think a switch with significantly more resistance might be better for me. I try to keep my wrists as straight as possible but both of them still end up hurting sometimes.

Should I look into cherry blacks? I'm also open to loud switches like blues because I use my keyboard behind a closed door.

I need a 75% board where the F keys are exactly in like with the top row of numbers(example in pic) because I play MMO's and use them for binds so they need to be easy to reach. I'm considering the Noppo choc mini RGB and the Plum electrostatic in white. Opinions?
I like the Noppo because it comes with PBT caps and has a hardware switch to disable the win key and switch control and capslock.

k65 owner here, without desoldering the switches, you have no way to access the top side of the circuit board. Really your best shot is to open the thing up, bend a pipe cleaner in 2, spray it with cleaner, and try to give it a brushie brushie in the general area of where you think the spill soaked through. If it was water, I've had that happen and just spraying canned air and letting it sit overnight has fixed it for me, but for stuff that leaves residue on the board, it's pipe cleaner or you're SOL. It's the one flaw with such a beautiful keyboard. I was thinking about using some of that waterproofing spray or some sugru to seal off the seams on the switch bases so that liquid can't seep in through them just in case. Maybe invest in a cupholder that clips onto your desk

>Which keycap is closest to buckling spring?
Do you mean which switch is closest to buckling springs?. To answer both questions the keycaps that are typically found on an IBM model M are actually two pieces which no other keyboard has. They are made from dye-sub PBT so if you want something that feels somewhat similar you can get those.

As far as switches switches feel the most like buckling springs, there are none. Buckling springs are the only switch in which the tactile feedback and audible click happen at the exact moment of actuation. No other switch does that.
>>
>>57013266
Damn.
Are Unicomp the only ones making buckling springs anymore? nothing else?
>>
>>57013313
Unicomp is the only one, but they are 1 to 1 replicas as they are made with the same exact tooling process from 30+ years ago. A different model uses less plastic to make them lighter, but thats about it

I have an at101w, found this. Thoughts? Why is this a thing people want?
>>
>>57009888
I can try to guess. The thing is I don't know how bright the LEDs are. They're not flashlight bright, so probably under 4mW.
Average illuminated keyboard has like 100 LEDs, right?
Multi-color LED power draw depends on implementation, but let's assume they use a brightness leveling approach, so it'll be around the same as a standard single LED.

400mW, or .4W for the whole keyboard. That's 2500 hours to add up to one kilowatt-hour, which is the standard unit of electricity metering, and costs from 15¢ to 25¢ depending on location.

There are 8760 hours in a year.

So if you left all LEDs on 24/7 it'd still cost under a buck a year.
>>
>>57013008
>>57013375
>>57013313
There's this special project making a limited run of Model Fs in a similar manner, exact tooling processes and all.
And you can get it ten-keyless, which Unicomp doesn't do.
But it's 325$, and still pretty bulky.

As they say, nothing is quite like buckling springs. There's just a world of difference between having and not having that one-to-one actuation to feed back.
But in terms of pure numbers, I think that Matias Click switches get pretty close, and also have a force and noise level similar to buckling springs.
>>
>>57015447

Wait you mean you want to replace the LEDs in the switch? You can do that but you need to know how to solder. I was just thinking you can turn them off and replace the keycaps since that's really easy

Ducky uses plate mounted switches so replacing them is going to be hard. Also a full set of switches is expensive 30-50 dollars depending on the type. It might just be cheaper to buy a keyboard with white LEDs then to go through the hassle of replacing the switches. Ducky Ones sell for 99 dollars on mechanicalkeyboards.com

There is literally no difference between mechanical keyboards and regular.
>placebo
>>
>>57019940
Of course there is, a good mechanical keyboard has a much longer lifespan then a membrane one. Plus rubberdomes get mushy over time while mechanicals don't
>>
I fucking hate massdrop.

It takes too long to get anything and it's not much cheaper.

The only advantage are the exclusives.

I just got done desoldering a couple of broken NMB RT8256CW keyboards I picked up from the recycler.

Some caps are missing and some switches are fucked but I've got at least 100 switches here that are working and still acceptably smooth.

I figure I should plan out a 65% PCB to use these on. It's incredible how little wobble these space invaders have.
>>
>>57020142
Good luck designing the PCB. Gonna use a teensy for the controller?

you don't have to design a PCB, you can just handwire the thing together.
>>57020142
From people online on deskthority and geekhack they say these switches are fragile so just be careful with them
>>
>>57020178
that's not even a mechanical keyboard. Its a rubberdome with a clicker mechanism. If you actually want a good cheap mechanical keyboard then get a Tomoko, they are $35 on amazon and are water resistant as well, but unfortunately it's sold out.

>>
>>57020159

That's the idea.

>>57020179
>you can just handwire the thing together

They're plate mount, so that's an option. I'll be cutting down and reusing the plate anyway. They're normally soldered in with all four pins (2 NC) for stability, seeing as they lack a PCB post.

>these switches are fragile so just be careful with them

Already found out the hard way on a couple of them. You do not use a keypuller to get the caps off these or the whole top housing will separate from the bottom of the switch, potentially breaking off one or more clips. And if you put a switch back together with a missing clip it'll tilt and bind up when pressed. The keycaps instead pop off quite easily with a mini prybar.

You also have to be very careful putting the top of the housing back on if you open them. The leaves have to be aligned dead-on to the separator or you'll bend them, and the click arm needs to be lined up with the channel on the back of the top housing or you can snap it off.

That sucks. There was a blue space invader keyboard on ebay for 60 bucks so when I went on deskthority to ask about it they said don't bother since they break easily.

They don't seem particularly fragile in actual use, just when you're handling the switches themselves.

You need to be careful when taking caps off, and be careful with the switches themselves while the caps are off because the contacts are exposed through the "mouth" of the switch. And opening/reassembling the switch itself is risky business.

In case it's useful to anyone I just tested lubricating the switches. The only parts that make any significant contact are the two halves of the spring well: The portion on the bottom of the switch housing slides into the portion under the top of the switch housing along three rails. Lubing these significantly improves the smoothness of the switch. The return spring itself causes no significant friction.

One test was with lithium grease for a viscous lubricant. Smoothness of the switch is improved with a light application, though you can feel slight resistance from the grease. With a heavy application the switch binds up instead.

The other test involved PTFE as a thin lubricant, result being slightly less smooth but with no sensation of resistance.

The ramp the contacts ride on have no noticeable impact on the key feel. Lubing it makes no difference. Meanwhile lubing the clicker's channel causes the click to become muted.

The mounting holes on the pcb are not standard pok3r layout, and only two of the holes match up. The bottom kind of moves around but you can just jam something underneath to make it stable. The stabilizers are also really rattly, if you can be bothered replacing them it's a pretty nice board and basically one of the only ones that fit your criteria.
>>
>>57024069

They both make a low rubber thump on the downstroke, and the Matias switches don't have to be modded to mute the upstroke.
>>
>>56996124
The v60 has an arrow key lock which activates when you press fn + enter and makes the bottom left four corner keys into arrow keys, it's really quite useful. Keycaps are shit thin abs but the pok3r pbts have a disgusting laser etched font anyway. I find the case on the v60 pretty attractive and it doesn't feel compromised in build quality in any way.
>>
>>57024069
On Topres you pretty much can't avoid bottoming out because there's suddenly zero resistance when the dome collapses. On the other hand you easily can avoid bottoming out Matias quiets, but even if you do bottom out it just sounds like the bumping of thicc rubber.

It's definitely not cheaper (with the exception of some taobao kits), just get a regular off-the-shelf board if you don't have any niche needs / wants for a keyboard, and tons of money to throw at a project.

Results will be better since you get to customise almost every aspect of the board to your liking, though you're way past diminishing returns at that point.
>>
>>57025962

Yes.

No.
>>
>>57025962
yes they're detachable,

Yes in general they are good. The only compaint is most corsair keyboards have a non standard bottom row keysize so if you ever wanted to get custom keycaps you really can't.

Otherwise, yes, they are fine in general. a little overpriced though. Anyone saying otherwise is being a hipster.

That being said there are a lot of keyboard options. What are you looking for specifically?
>>
>>57026593

I guess but it would be a bit of a pain in the ass to send it back and then the waiting.
Don't know if they have any replacements with the standard layout in stock or if they're all like this. What pisses me off is that the picture on the store's page shows one with the regular layout.

Anyway, I guess it's not a huge problem, I'll get used to it. I don't play pinball games where the two big shift keys are nice. I always hit shift with my pinky so it doesn't really matter that it's small so eh. The enter key is what annoys me the most.

you can build a planck for about 30 bucks+cost of keycaps if you already have materials for the plate/case (a piece of hard lumber would do fine)
