I got mine today. Loving it so far.

Bootloader unlocking is for things like root, custom ROMs and recovery. It'd be worth registering on the MIUI website and putting in the request now, rather than waiting until you have it in your hands, as Xiaomi like to take their time with sending the unlock codes.

If you're not too bothered about customization and are happy to stay on MIUI then ignore all of the above.

Manufacturers list it devices with unlocked bootloaders as insecure, but for the average person it'd be no less secure with a locked bootloader.

You can remain on MIUI just fine with an unlocked bootloader, you're just opening yourself up to customization options should you feel the need to do so.

As for ROMs, I cannot recommend any for the device itself as I've only been using the thing for a few hours now. Though there are perfectly stable builds of Cyanogenmod 13 and 14 available.

Do yourself a favor and unlock the bootloader and flash either a custom ROM on there or get the MIUI ROM directly from their website. I've backed up my google music folder on pc before upgrading to android 6 and formatting the sd card as internal memory. The problem now is that when I copy the folder back the application doesn't see the music files and when I connect the phone back to pc they are not there anymore.
I don't want to fucking download everything again when I have all of it backed up on my computer, is there any way to actually get the backup to work?

I wouldn't wait for Xiaomeme to unlock your bootloader if I were you (this is regarding the snapdragon if I didn't misread). There's been issues with flashing MIUI back onto the device, and also any ROM flash resets the BL counter and you'll have to unlock it again. I used the latest version of x64 MiFlash and adb to put a MIUI8 dev ROM on my phone along with TWRP. Unsatisfied with MIUI8 I downloaded CM13 for it and I wouldn't go back to MIUI. For the most part it can take a little punishment if you manage to bootloop it from being a retard because fastboot is always exposed.

If you're curious about CM13: 11 hr SOT, same performance, fingerprint even works better. The cameras use a patch atop stock Qualcomm, which kind of makes the back camera tolerable under low light, but the front facing camera is depreciated in performance. Also for some reason, the MIUI modem driver or something must be buggy because it drops a lot of signal on and off for no reason. So if you don't need MIUI specific optimizations CM is pretty mature on RNP3. The Adreno a shit for energy consumption regardless though.

How does this logic even make sense? NEETs are the ones more likely to be next to an outlet all day. Battery life would be the least important feature. As for the rest, a charger or power bank still tethers the phone and greatly reduces its functionality, so it is still an inferior solution to the better battery.
