This computer is 10 years old and doesn't feel any worse to use than a modern computer.
It has 802.11n, USB 2.0, and SATA2 so you would have no issue adding an SSD or using it with modern wifi routers.
And it's 10 years old. It wasn't even that long ago when your computer would become woefully obsolete after only 2 years.

The only "progress" made in the last 10 years has been battery life and THINNESS at the expense of everything else.
When did computing simply stop progressing?
Is it gonna be like this 10 years from now?
Will I be able to use a 2016 thinkpad in 2026 without issues?

really? My core2duo performed like shit at compiling and encoding tasks

processors have improved a lot

the only problem is light moves slow as fuck so stuff has to be paralellisze but that is not really that much of a problem

I used an athlon 64 x 2 system for a while when waiting on a new motherboard, and was thoroughly surprised how well it functioned with a dedicated GPU and only 2GB of ram. Running it with an SSD gave quite the pleasantly usable experience for basic usage such as web browsing.

However, what you don`t realize is that you`re actually making subconcious rationalizations and lowering your expectations because you already know that the hardware is outdated and going to perform poorly compared to something more modern. Do an actual side by side, and you will be disillusioned of just how great your 10 year old system actually is.

It`s usable, but it`s not "Just as good" by any means. You would be a fucking idiot to even imply that. Is it even an x86-64 model?

>>57007842
Could still use an SSD, and PCIE 3 in practice is still nowhere near utilization. Even in the face of the mighty Titan XP, Puget Systems found that there`s no significant difference between 8x and 16x. Some situations where 8x is actually better than 16x, and even situations where 8x/8x SLI performs better than 16x/16x SLI. The only test that resulted in a significant difference was running 4k surround with minimal graphical settings to stress the CPU and PCIE buss as much as possible.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Titan-X-Performance-PCI-E-3-0-x8-vs-x16-851/

But overall, yes I agree with you entirely. Oh, and UEFI is pretty shit. But meh.

Maybe it was like 20$, and he just felt like it would be a good shit posting box.

Speed of light travels 1cm in .033ns. That`s 1nm in .0000000033 seconds. Not sure how that could be considered "slow as fuck." The problem is the CPU is slow as fuck by today`s standards.

>>57008046

that is slow desu

you obviously dont know what you are talking about
pick up a computer engineering book or something

kek. My 2008 core2duo thinkpad has a fucking ton of slowdown on JS and flash heavy websites.

>>57007880
Enjoy your I3/I5/I7 with embedded Intel ME and botnet technologies.
>>
It's a thinkpad. :)

I only noticed my Thinkpad X200 is lacking when I tried to render some video on the go. When you attempt to do real work the age really shows. Any old computer is "good enough" for shitposting on 4chan or fapping to porn, I think normies are realising slowly that's all they need and buying accordingly. Even a T40 is good enough as a shitposting machine but the need for a beefy desktop is still there for people who need to do something productive with their machines.

Try watching some 1080p anime on it
>>
>>57009852
>he fell for 1080p anime meme
>>
>>57008046
Battery life will be nonexistent at that age. I had an old laptop that would even die almost instantly when unplugged(and the battery actually charged, just terribly).
>>
>>57007797
You can successfully do most things but browse the most bloated websites and play new video games with a Pentium III and 64MB of RAM. I can load up 480p YouTube in VLC on it and it plays smoothly.

There's been progress, but it definitely doesn't affect the average consumer.

>October 2008
>buy Late 2008 13" Unibody Macbook
>bare bones 2ghz model, 2GB ram, 160GB HDD
>replace with 4GB ram and 500GB HDD next day from local pc shop
>eventually replace HDD with Seagate hybrid drive
>later add Intel 320 SSD in optical bay and 8GB RAM
>machine still working perfectly fine today

Applel might be 'overpriced' (>implying Thinkpads arent' when new...) but that machine still just werks.

Not sure I like the look of the new machines though, part of what got that machine through was the ability to upgrade certain components.
You can't even change the battery now...

Huh?

That's YouTube's fault for being so goddamn bloated and breaking support on older browsers. I don't know if it will run 720p video, but it might. 64MB of RAM is limiting.

X61 owner here - with:

-4GB RAM
-Fresh Win 7 install
-BIOS updates to whitelist wifi (upgraded to wireless-n) and include Win 7 SLIC
-replaced CPU fan twice

Machine generally feels fine when I use it. Don't use it when Windows Updates are installing though.

my core 2 duo chokes on javascript-heavy websites. when did it all go so wrong?
>>
>>57007880
Money. I'm probably gonna get an old Thinkpad for shitposting on the go as I already own a powerful desktop and don't need much power in a portable device
>>
>>57007797
CPUs have been stagnating since 2011, compare the onboard graphics, expansion, and power efficiency are where the improvements are, as SATA2 compared to PCI-E storage is night and day, onboard graphics are pretty competent for basic gaming and H.265 and 4K decoding, while back in 06 on board would struggle with decoding a blu-ray, and you can forget about watching 1080p content on youtube or netflix.
>>
>>57011692
Who said anything about ARM? What makes you think all ARM processors are SoCs?

>almost no difference in most daily tasks
I'm going to return it tomorrow. Also OS X remains comfier.
