Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is the X220 mSATA slot SATA II or III?
>>
>>56972919
T420 is SATA2, probably the x220 has SATA2 too.

It's not like you'll notice it in daily usage anyway.
>>
>>56972957
>It's not like you'll notice it in daily usage anyway
No, I'm sure you do, since random 4kB access is affected by SATA revisions. And mSATA drives are more expensive (why?) than normal SATA, and also use more power (again, why?). My slots are both empty, so no reason to gimp myself.

Anyone interested in making a frankenpad from a no-trackpad R61e 15.4" should check out ebay. $19.99 + shipping with ac adapter and machine is complete, even if it is 512mb and celeron. You can flash middleton bios and then put in a nice C2D CPU and more ram. Plus 15.4" = you can add up to a 1920x1200 display.

t420 with a 512gb 850 mSATA and 2TB HD and 16gb RAM here. It is not too far behind my i3 6100 machine.

On an x230 with a new 9 cell with windows 7 / IPS / 256gb Kingston SSD, only getting 6 hours instead of the 9+ everyone else seems to be getting when doing light browsing. I'm idling at 12/13w, anyone else having a similar experience?
>>
How bad of a deal is the newegg x220 on ebay? Ohter 3rd party sellers always seem so sketchy.
>>
>>56972184
Hope you guys can help me out here.

For the longest times, I've used pic related (Toshiba R400 Portege) as a laptop. I was completely in love with its design and it's tablet conversion thing. It carried out its duty amazingly well until almost a year ago when the CPU just shat itself and stopped processing anything at all (Basic text editing would take 100% CPU for no reason and installing a new OS was practically impossible). I never managed to fix it and ended up throwing it away.

I've been switching portable devices a lot and finally I feel like I want to settle for a Thinkpad with Linux on it. And I recently came across the Thinkpad x220t, which has the exact same tablet conversion thing, which I loved so much.

However, I'm worried about its size. I really enjoy having a large, or at least, a medium sized screen, and I'm afraid it might be too small.

Do you easily get used to it, or is it going to drive me crazy? Because I can just get a larger model if so.
>>
>>56973783
Forgot to attach pic, whoops.

>>
>>56974399
just be careful
purchasing batteries is a pretty shitty experience

I would worry about whether it's Lenovo and how much capacity is left. Most sellers are reluctant or don't care to provide capacity info so it's a gamble. Don't trust anything "refurbished". 9cells claiming they're new are probably going to cost you a lot, especially for a model that old.

tl;dr getting batteries is a fucking pain

Opinions on the t460? I know a guy that gets dirt cheap deals on new and refurbished laptops.
>>
>>56973261
You don't. SATA 2 SSD is still way faster than spinning rust especially on access time. You get a shitload of benefit from it still.

No it's not as fast as SATA 3 or NVME and shit but it still cures long boot times and system slowness after login

Literally what is the logic of leaving out a trackpad on a laptop that clearly has enough room to accommodate it? Don't get me wrong, I love the trackpoint. but still.

If all else fails, you could just carbon fiber wrap it. That's what I did because there was a shitty sticker that left a ton of residue on mine.

sup /tpg/, im looking at buying an x61 soon for some on the go use, how long does a brand new (8cell is the biggest battery you can get for an x61 right?) last? I'm planning on using windows with a Linux OS in dual boot on an ssd, mostly windows but if all the tablet functions work fine in Linux (auto rotate and the buttons and etc) then I'll probably use linux main os and no windows, anyways back to main point: how long does the battery last on like 50% brightness with wi-fi on? (wirelessly tethered to phone)

I don't own a notebook right now, and don't really need one either. But I kind of want to get used to spending more time in Unix, so I'm tempted by this one:

x220
i5
8GB
256GB SSD
Refurbished

for 300 Eurobucks.

It's not a lot of money for a decent laptop, but if it's going to annoy me during daily usage due to its age or lack of power I'd rather spend thrice that and get an XPS 13.

Anyway, how is that offer in general? Worth it? Europe is kinda fucked in regards to Thinkpad pricing.
>>
>>56977096
300€ for x220+ssd is worth it in my books, I managed to get an x220 for 260€ so getting one with an ssd for just 40€ more is great, and yes Europe is seriously fucked with thinkpad prices.

I don't know why people come into this general with the assumption that there's some kind of "ThinkPad distro".
Debian probably gives you a headache with wireless because of Intel card firmware, which you probably need to get from contrib/non-free. If you're looking for a batteries-included distro try anything from Ubanto to /me tips Fedora, even Mint.

>>
>>56981635

I see. It depends on how much extra it costs and what your preferences are. There are basically three notable differences:

The keyboard -
Most of the fuss about the keyboard is because of the different layout, it has very similar mechanics to the T420's keyboard so it's still very comfortable to type on. The T420's layout is generally considered better so it's up to you to compare it to the other advantages.

The processor -
The T430 has the 3rd generation i-series processor. The difference in performance is small, but the new one consumes less power.
It also comes with HD4000 graphics instead of HD3000, which is quite a step up. It's still only good for light gaming but you can expect a 10-20 fps increase. Both will handle 1080p video just fine.

USB 3.0 -
The T420 only has USB 2.0 ports, so if you have to transfer a lot of data from and to your laptop, the T430 might be preferable.
>>
>>56981614
The best use I've found for it is booting your computer and logging in automatically while you go take a piss or get a drink.

Lubuntu will run on it, it does on my T43. You can also pick a not obese distro for it like debian or arch and throw LXDE or whatever standalone window manager on it and it'll be fine for 4chan and youtube if you don't mind using mpv.

no idea, it's stock windows 10 with control panel power settings and a genuine 90% capacity 6 cell on an X230T. I didn't do anything to it besides keeping brightness at 50-70% and having typical defaults

Got an X220 today. Really good specs and weight for the price, but I'm not a fan of the touchpad, and I can't see why people love the trackpoint so much. It seems to just make everything slower for me.

I've heard people praise the trackpoint for allowing you to keep your fingers on the home row, but I only type with my two index fingers (I can do like 100-105 WPM with just two fingers, so I never saw any point in learning to touch type), so I don't see the advantage of that. ive been using the trackpoint now instead of amouse since a few years. i dont even WANT a mouse anyore, its all so much easier with the trackpoint, lel.

you just have to work with it a few days, at first it sucks but it gets better and at some point you dont want to use anything else anymore.
>>
>>56986569
Why do you like the trackpoint so much? Does it have an advantage over a mouse or touchpad (besides the ability to keep your fingers on the home row)?
>>
>>56986642
Compared with a trackpad
>more precise
>faster
>two finger gestures are made obsolete by trackpoint middle button
>hardware buttons make for a satisfying experience
>hands on home row

Try doing CAD work on a fucking trackpad, I dare you. With a trackpoint, it's a joy.

is there anything better than having fun by shitposting on 4chan with your thinkpad during the night when you are tired?

i love my thinkpad
>>
>>56986642
the touchpad is jsut pure fucking trash compared t it. you have to move your fingers a lot more, youre not as precise, the whole movement isnt as "smooth". also, the biggest pro is in my opinion those amazing buttons beneath the keyboard. i can all handle them with my thumb, which makes scrolling etc. extremely fast, and especially continuous. i never have to re-adjust my hand to keep scrolling.

a mouse is of course better for gaming and whatnot, but for browsing and most work, ill choose the thinkpoint. after you worked with it a while, it just feel more "right" in my opinion.

The tablet mode is great for when I'm trying to work in cramped spaces, and the touchscreen seems gimmicky but trust me it makes doing everything so much faster.

are non-thinkpad refurbished laptops a good deal too? some of them look like pretty good deals but I've never bought something refurbished before and don't know if it's a good idea or not

I don't want a thinkpad because I need/want a 17 inch screen and reasonable gaming performance.

It depends on what type of gaming you do, and what you want to do with you laptop. If you want to play low spec games and emulate. It's possible on a thinkpad.

My shittop''s intel ivy bridge i3 IGPU can easily handle playing 2d emulation for example. So an Thinkpad can handle that,

How funny, just sold one of those for $90 and had a YouTube video about it.
I am a fan of the X61 tablet, first laptop I've had and still have one.

Anywho, the big deal is that, the X220 will be a bit wider than your machine and maybe the battery location might bother you.
As far as screen goes, you will be 'upgrading' to an IPS display. iirc the protege had a TN panel.
Currently no ThinkPad has a swivel hinge design, last was the X230.
There's a ThinkPad helix too if you want something small but is a slate and not a tablet convertable.

Anyone's desktop can shit on em.

Good gaming desktops to play games 3 years ago cost $4,000 new. They will not cost $800 unless you extremely lucky.

Please, don't post here again. most of us don't game on a ThinkPad and if we do, it's old games, it's an eGPU it's a sort of setup someone who wants to buy a gaming laptop doesn't like, doesn't agree with and doesn't want.

A T61P would work great for a light Linux distro + torrent and 720 anime as long as you have at least 2 gigs of Ram.

X201i would be a lot more sleeker than the X130e though, plus typing on it is much better too, the thing I disliked about the X130e was how the keyboard was pushed towards you.

Are there any good mods for the T400? I the base model with no discreet gpu and the 1280x800 display. I was thinking about a new keyboard to fix some of the problems with the one I have now, are T410 or T420 keyboards compatible? I find them nicer to use.

How loud do thinkpads usually get?
My current Jewlett-Fucktard laptop idles at 60°C and will deafen anyone in a 10 meter radius under load, so I wanna know if I can use a TP in class without majorly disturbing everyone?

My thinkpad t560's power button broke inside, partially. So it works, but kinda wiggles when I press it, and if I'm not careful it can get stuck inside.
I opened the cover, and I see the power button is easily replaceable.
But where can I order a power button from?

Why is it impossible to get a x220 with i7 in Europe (I'm from Spain)?

I need new screws for my Thinkpad. When I first opened it up, I realized half of them were missing. Where do I buy them?

It's an X200, I'm talking about bottom chassis screws.

>>56974126
Assuming it's just sticker residue, Goof Off or Goo Gone are made for this type of shit. You can get it at Home Depot for less than $5. If the plastic itself it discolored from being exposed to light less than the rest of the palm rest you're probably out of luck.
>>
>>56981659
Was this through eBay? If you find that it has USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 as they described it I'd message them about it. You might be able to get them to give you a partial refund because most sellers don't want to have to deal with a return.
>>
>>57001437
The i7 is fucking awful. Stick with the i5. The small jump in speed from the i5 to the i7 is not worth the heat and noise the i7 will cause.

It's discoloration, already tried with pretty much everything suggested.

Well shit new palmrest it is.

my x220 doesn't seem to be boosting. it has the i7 2640m but the speeds i've ever seen it run are the base 2.8 and the power saving 0.8 (according to cpuz) but never the boosted 3.5. any ideas?
>>
>>57003099
do the cpu-z stress test and check temps while it's running, maybe it's throttling
>>
>>57003247
it was 70c or below when i was installing a program (which was using 70% cpu and should be boosting at that time). hell even gayming never produced more than ~87c.

Did I misspelled X200? More videos to come. :D

Unless I get lipo or a shit load of zip, no trap videos for awhile. :x

I plan on writing a review on T420s/30s screens with the Alienware M14x swap and other options, as well as a bit more info about the T430 I have.

>>56999095
>touch screen
>$300 or less
X220 or maybe X230 multitouch. Unless you are VERY lucky on finding a touchscreen T400s, your other option is a Yoga 14 or maybe a touch X1 Carbon that goes for super cheap.

>>57000763
Hmmm... well you can start by narrowing down what kind of ThinkPad you want, I mean there are only so many shitty Acer Netbooks but there have been 20+ years of ThinkPads in all different flavors.

Guy who replied to you is an asshole. You can find plenty of machines for the price. But you won't find thinkpads that can compete because these things really are made for work stuff. Video editing, Cad which is gamers really can't take advantage of unless you wanna do the egpu route.

Maybe I should sell it and invest in an x200 with the IPS screen, and put an SSD in it. Then again, I don't know if I really need that or it's just the ZOG telling me to

Whoops I'm an imbecile I meant express card. Did you set the power management on the BIOS to gen 1? Does the 420 (not s) come with more than just the integrated graphics? The Chinese manual makes a point bout that but it is moot in the s.

>Did you set the power management on the BIOS to gen 1?
Yes, otherwise I'd get the very popular EventID 4101 error which is the driver crashing randomly and seems like there's no specific solution yet.

Performance hit isn't that much, pic related with a gtx 950.

>Does the 420 (not s) come with more than just the integrated graphics?
It comes with either integrated hd3000 or integrated + NVS dGPU, I'm using the one without the dGPU.

They don't have a magnesium base/lid, it's basically plastic but worse than the R series.

Not many like em, enthusiasts dislike they strongly.

Get it if it serves your budget/region.
