Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I checked out those guys and they apparently sold out on the X220 that would have costed £166 with SSD; fair enough, it does make them a bit more competitive for a refurbisher. Not sure I can trust independent sellers with only one to sell though.

It depends if Anon thinks an ssd is a critical thing. I haven't had an ssd before simply because at least once or twice a day I read here on /g/ about ssd's failing.

I use generally use Linux so an ssd should be ok with Linux. I would not put faith in an ssd being reliable using Windows.

>also the dc jack is loose and i took the laptop apart to fix it but it hasn't made a difference
You have to dissemble the screen (and thus keyboard, palm rest, and keyboard bezel also), to get at it, and there should be a single bracket holding it in. If the bracket isn't there, that's why it's loose.
>>
>>56943754
nvm about the flashing shit i am retarded that i didn't search before.

I still need help about the dc jack though.
>>

i went all the way because i wanted to swap the paste and clean the fan. the bracket was very well screwed in and i tried bending it inwards to make it apply more pressure but it's the same (or even worse). previous owner just bent the plastic and inserted a thin plastic to hold the jack in place when he wanted to plug in the charger.

so the dock came bundled with my thinkpad when i got it almost a year ago. it's been sitting in the closet gathering dust but now that i've gotten rid of my desktop i'm kind of wondering what its purpose is. i pressed one button on it and something that looked like it oculd have been a CD-drive tray popped out but lo and behold it was only plastic. didn't look big enough to hold one but i'm not relaly a hardware guy -- don't have an accurate frame of reference for how large a laptop CD drive would be anyway. can anyone help me out figuring what the hell this thing is supposed to do?

How many drives are you able to fit in the W520?

From my understanding you can add three drives with one being in the mSATA slot, another in the primary 2.5 inch bay, and using a special caddy for the ultrabay.

Is there any particular caddies you guys can reccomend or will any do?

I also read that the W520 comes with either a 7mm or 9.5mm height drive will this affect my choice of caddies?

I cheaped the fuck out and bought an X201 Tablet. Great device but I neglected the weight and I'm carrying it 25 minutes walking to and from class 4 days a week. I took out the battery and just plug it in when I get to programming class (only class I need it for) but it's pretty silly.

I should've bought a lighter device. Don't be poorfags, kids.

Same here but 5 days a week, some days twice and it's a T420 with 3 drives and 9 cell battery.

I'll never understand how people find these laptops heavy, it's roughly the same as two average books.

Need some help here please.

My desktop pc is dying (really old) and it's also pretty dated (intel core duo, 3GB RAM). It's scrap metal at this point.

I was thinking about getting a ThinkPad + docking station instead of another desktop. Nowadays I'm always on the move and I'd like the freedom to just take the computer with me.
Do you think this is a good option? Should I just get a cooling pad instead to keep it from frying the cpu?

Why lenovo forces you to take the most expensive CPU to allow you to buy 16GB of ram on a X1 carbon ?!

I have a x230 with 16gb ram and i5 vpro that i gor for about 300usd in Norwegian price range (so pretty cheap in other words).

I can run many android vms and compile and deploy at the same time without much problem.
its small 12.5 inch screen feels so great traveling around on trains etc. if there is alot of people packed in winter coats its better to have a smaller screen so you wont take up much space. 2d shit should be fine, but because of your graphics needs i would look at x230 over x220, allthough you must research the HD3000 vs 4000 and see. Might be worth the money saved to go for a 220 and get better touchpad aswell.

As for docking I use a thinkpad mini dock 3, which works fine out of the box on my 1440p monitor. Gives me tons of space to work on - only thing is the audio output isnt isolated and electric current can distort your sound. Read up on this before buying - i got mine from work for free so i dont mind.

video editing and photoshop should do fine on i5 or i7. make sure you get IPS screen. Mine doesnt and its not a big deal but i would prefer it if i had the opurtunity.

Good luck.

I own a t430s. Your going to have to purchase a model compatible ultrabay battery to make the battery life close to usable. Even on the dimmest brightness setting just browsing the internet kills the 44wh battery fast. Expect 2 and a few minutes of life on half brightness while doing anything more demanding than reading text if the included battery has drained to 80% original.

I've been holding off on buying since I want to buy a 4tb drive but if I'm limited to a 9.5mm height drive then I would only be able get the 2tb drive.

The T430s is very different from the T430 in terms of battery capacity.

The T430 has a 54 watt hour battery by default vs the T430s's 44 watt hour one; the T430's is by default 23% more capacious. Then a lot of folks like to put 9-cells into their T430, which brings up the wattage to 94 watt hours which is where you get the really high life times.

The T430s is not compatible with the extended 9-cell battery, so it can never acheive those sorts of lifetimes, even with the ultrabay battery addition.

I7 X220. These are my temps after a mere 10 minutes of prolonged CPU usage at ~50% (10-bit 1080p Chinese cartoons via dual Mpv instances).
>84 and climbing

>4500 fan rpm
>smell of plastic year the vent
And this is after a thermal-paste replacement. What kind of shitty meme did I fall for here? This thing is useless for any actual work utilizing the CPU.

My T420 drops connection from my WLAN router every few hours for no apparent reason, regardless of what it's transmitting. I'm using the Centrino 6205, and already tried the 6300 which behaves even worse. I don't think the issue occurs under any OS except for Windows, and I'm using 7 Enterprise N with the 2016 rollup/security updates.

This is my single issue with the machine, and it's been happening for months. I'm using dd-wrt and it makes no difference whether I connect on the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band. Has anyone else ever run into this bullfuck before?
>>
>>56961067
Are you serious? I get better temps on my X61T, and my fan is usually 3000-something at most unless I'm stupid enough to try 3D. Then again my only past experience with an X220 made me tear my hair out.

The i7 X220 is know to be a power guzzler for strange reasons even though its maximum processor power rating is the same as the i5

>>56962822
In that form factor, the most you be able to see forward is a newer processor which means newer integrated graphics. But that size really isn't the one if you want to play gaems or run a decently sized CAD project or the like on it
I mean there is the X230 and you'll be able to carry over the accessories. But it's too little an improvement if you already have an X220

So I swapped out the regular 120GB Samsung SSD in my T420 for some larger Intel drive I had lying around. The problem is that there is now this annoying high pitch noise, which may be a noisy capacitor or something? This problem only occurs with the new drive and not the old one. Unfortunately I don't have a 3rd drive to test out. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Tryin' to convince her to not spend as much money on me is a bit different than complaining. I'm perfectly happy with a new laptop, though as I'd be just as happy with a used one too I think it would be better to do that and save her some cash. Even though she might go for a fancy yoga or the t460 you rec'd I found a refurb helix for 500 bucks and once I research the helix more and see if it's any good probably get it. Would a helix be worth getting?
