Don't ask me how or why but the storage drive in my HTPC is all inside of a "System Reserved" partition which means Windows really doesn't like to access it without me manually enabling it every time I boot and I can't even remove it with the Windows setup. I'm sure I could use a gpart bootdisk to remove it and format but I was wondering if there was any way to convert it to a normal volume without losing the data? There doesn't seem to be a command for converting system reserved volumes in diskpart.

You can try booting up a WinPE disk or linux live cd to see if they recognize it differently, but it sounds like you've got a corrupted partition, so you probably want to use this

Kind of a technophobe question so pls no bully.

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2
I love it, but the thing takes forever to charge, like 4~ hours.
I know it has a 9500 mAh battery but it still seems like it's taking way too long to charge.

My question is, will a non-stock usb 3.0 cable make it charge any faster?

Maybe I'm just spoiled by quickcharge on my LG G4...

charging has to do with the electricity running through, and not the usb speed for file transfer. please correct me if i am wrong.

This month. The 460 is a little better than the 360, but not $40 better. Think really light settings at 1080p.

>>56967912
Probably not. Premium brands tend to include ideal cables to begin with. You can try replacing it with a short (6" or less) quality cable like anker, but you might not see any difference. Make sure your charger puts out at at least 2 amps. Sometimes you just get a shitty charger or cable.
>>
>>56967994
Docking bay could cause less stress to the connector. Sata connectors are not really meant to be plugged and unplugged all the time. Not to mention a bay would usually have something preventing vibration noise.

That adapter cable only supports ssds and laptop drives, but since they are so cheap I'd recommend just getting one anyways. Also get a docking bay with 2 slots, great for cloning and such.

>>56967912
Firstly, higher amps for a charger means a faster charge. Look on the wall charger for the tiny text that says something like "Output 2A". 1A is too slow. If you can get a higher value then that's even better, but I don't know how common that is.

Second, apparently the type of cable matters too. I don't know how that works, but I've tested it with every combination of wall charger and cable that I have. (I have a little app that tells me the amps my phone is getting.) What I learned was that sometimes a bad cable can be a bottleneck even when used with a good wall charger. Like these two short cables that came with portable battery packs were giving me 300 mA, which is terrible. So I'd definitely recommend trying out other cables and seeing if they're faster. I don't know what brand is best though. Just try out anything you have access to.

This is the type of USB cable that comes with my external WD hard drive. Notice how the smaller end looks like two micro plugs side-by-side? So there's kind of two ports on the hard drive. I noticed that I could plug a regular phone cable (USB A to micro B) into one of the hard drive's ports (leaving the other empty) and it worked.

My question is: what's up with that? Why benefit does the WD cable have over my (longer and cheaper) phone cable? More power? Faster write speeds? Would using a phone cable be in any way worse for my hard drive? Like, I don't want to use a cable that doesn't provide enough power or something if that will wear down my hard drive faster or be more error-prone.

Backwards compatibility. USB 3 micro B is a USB 2 micro A and micro B plug side by side. So you can use a USB 3 micro B cable or either microUSB 2 port type. It's a USB standard, nothing special from WD.

I'm not an expert, but I think you can do that. I believe that's what I did with Windows 8 the last time I got a new computer, but it's been a while.

Just google for a good tutorial, don't do anything until you understand what you're doing, and backup your shit first.

Here's a random tutorial I found:
http://www.tecmint.com/install-ubuntu-16-04-alongside-with-windows-10-or-8-in-dual-boot/

A different tutorial said to boot into Windows once or twice after resizing the partition. It said "This allows the Windows system to automatically rescan the newly-resized partition and write changes to its own bootloader configuration files."

And to reiterate: BACKUP YOUR FILES FIRST! It's a very important step when fucking around with partitions.

im diving into coding having never done it before. my main goals are to make visuals and work with audio. possibly stuff that could go on the web. from what i read openframeworks is what i should look into. i downloaded that, and then found out i need something called an IDE. im w7 so i got visual suite. i cant find tutorials (all are for mac and though i try to find parallels/translate the vocabulary into what im looking on my end, i cant).

can any of you recommend other paths i could take to reach my goals? have i dived too deep (openframeworks being something i should look into later on) having not done "the basics"?

i come at this from a completely different discipline and understand you gotta learn the ropes for most skills/hobbies to get good.

Whenever i fly overseas, the airplane offers free movies to watch. I can watch them on a little touch screen that's in the seat in front of me. I always watch movies, I've done this 3 times with 3 different airlines.
But EVERY TIME, the touch screen is unresponsive as fuck. I load up the movies, and want to click the arrow to load the next page. But when i click the arrow nothing happens. Sometimes i have to press a few centimeters next to the arrow, sometimes i just have to keep touching it a dozen times, sometimes it just wont work at all.

Am I doing anything wrong? I tried everything, from very light touching, to regular touching, to violent tapping.
Or is it just laggy because 200+ people are simulatenously trying to access the same server (i assume the touchscreens are merely terminals)?

>>56970974
if you want to learn the actual basics it does not matter which language you start with.
you will need to learn basic computer operations and how things are done.
that includes stuff like binary to hex conversions, the structure of a computer program and how it exists in ram.
you dont actually need to know these things very deeply but knowing already that when you assign a value to a variable that its basically cached in ram for you to use from there.
its little things that make you go OHHHH SO THATS WHY.
c and c++ might be too advanced for a programmer if you want to do web stuff learn javascript. javascript has gone a long way from what it used to be and in my opinion can teach people a lot of great programming knowledge if learned correctly. javascript is a multi paradigm language. its prototypica, object oriented but also functional.

great ways to learn javascript include the javascript road trip and eloquent javascript.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwFKqTGHbaU
look for a torrent for this its very well made and approved by google iteself.

also this the pdf is free the hardcover has some extra stuff.
http://eloquentjavascript.net/

both of these assume that you never programmed but will teach you the ins and out of general programming. with javascript particulars.
after that its very easy to branch out and grasp other programming languages and concepts.

Stop bumping yourself and do a modicum of research.

Laptops are constantly rotated on and off the market.

You should be estimating a budget, and finding what components you need for your purposes.

For example, light gaming with those games would only require a semi-modern dedicated gpu, something like a "960m".

So just do this:
>specify price range
>determine minimum specs
>find laptop with specs you need
>compare price to other laptops
>read reviews on final contenders and purchase

Fuck.

It really isn't that hard.

It is more efficient than the I5 in terms of power consumption but you have to take in consideration which CPUs are you talking about and what you are going to do with them.

The price difference is just not worth it for most tasks.

Most NAS solutions just run GNU/Linux anyway, like your desktop already does.

seperation of processing power.
you can also do a lot of practical things with a NAS.
sharing hard drives is also a security risk if you do it on windows.
most NAS specific hardware is also very low power usage so you can leave it running basically all the time.
i personally have an old phenom 2 x6 1090T on a microatx board that is running freeNAS with 16 gigs of ram and 6 2TB hard rives for storage.
it has all my movies, music and other files. also runs plex for inhome movie streaming and is also my pirating box running deluge with sickrage and couchpotato. also runs nextcloud for synching family photos from our smart phones and a small webserver for testing and deployment.
sometimes i also run a minecraft server on it or some virtual machines for software testing.

you can get a nas started really cheeply an intel box costs like 100 bucks and just attach a nas controller to it and install arch linux or something onto it and configure it how you like.

its really mostly convinience and ease of use.

I'm getting rid of my desktop PC and setting up a 'hub' to plug by laptop into and use my desktop peripherals.

I'm guessing easiest way is to connect monitor through HDMI, then have a USB hub that has KB, mouse, DAC, External HD attached - so only have to plug 2 cables + power into laptop and boom it's working like my desktop for browsing.

Any hubs exist that would simplify this further? Any recommended hubs for what I outlined above?

I was looking at D-LINK DUB-1340 usb hub for this, as it's the only one I can see as advertising power to the hub's USB ports. I want to make sure that I can plug by DAC in (schiit modi) as it draws power from USB.

The D-Link is only 4 ports though, and I'd prefer 1 or 2 more if possible, but 4 would work as there are 2 USB ports on my laptop.

Motherboard is probably the last piece of hardware that will fail in a computer unless is made by a low quality company like ASRock(They are good now with skylake motherboards) or Biostar.

If they have proper cooling and you dont do any kind of overclock in them even more.
Its one of the last parts you should worry about.

HDDs can last even more if you take care of them and if they are good quality ones (I have a Maxtor 40GB HDD with 78k hours for example and only 18 bad sectors but still working).
All my WD Blues have atleast 30k hours and 0 problems with the exception of one.
I have had a couple of seagate and WD greens fail tho.

Also, a 1TB WD Blue is $49, im sure you can afford one, or a 240GB SSD for $55-80
A low end GPU is $100-150.
You CPU is good enough, PSU might be a little worn.

If it had good care and cooling, it will last you 2-5 years more, who knows.

A way to know if your HDD is still good is to read SMART data, If it were damaged you would notice slowdowns, or in case of a heavy failure windows would freeze.
CPU will start giving system instability before a fatal failure, same for RAM.

>>56973667
HP is not known for its good cooling but meanwhile its under 60°C it is considered acceptable.
That is prebuilt doesn't mean it has shit cooling but probably only has a exhaust fan only right?

My external hard drive came with a short USB cable (A to micro 3.0). The length of the cable is inconvenient due to the way I use my laptop. I'd like a cable that stretches from my bed to my nightstand where I can put the hard drive. But I read that longer cables lose power. The hard drive is powered from the usb cable alone so I want to make sure I don't get a cable that's too long.

1. Is what I read true?
2. What's the longest cable that I should consider? Is three feet fine? Six feet? Does it matter at that distance for a hard drive's energy requirements?

I saw the videos of the bitch loading the gun and trying to tell the kid the cops are just there to kill her.

Its been out for over a decade now. Its also marketed under the brand name "jet puff" or something.

>You have it backwards, friend. Cops are trained to shoot to kill
They're trained to do both. Shooting to kill is only for when it's absolutely necessary, yet they do it whenever they damned well please.
>I saw the videos of the bitch loading the gun and trying to tell the kid the cops are just there to kill her
Did I ever say literally every cop is a ruthless murder? No, there are of course cases where the story is legit. It happens all to often though where stories don't align or body cams just happen to malfunction right before a cop ends up killing someone
>>
>>56976896
Sure, theres cops out there that kill for bullshit reason. I dont disagree with that.
Were you getting at a "why do cops kill people" or "why do cops kill black people"?
>>
>>56976865
Just checked, its been talked about for the last 110 years.
Seems to be just an american thing, are you a bong?
>>
>>56976917
I was getting at cops need to shoot to stop more often and shoot to kill less often and was also making the point that it's far too common for a cop to abuse his ability to get away with murder

>>56976927
No, I'm American
>>
>>56976929
>I was getting at cops need to
Oh yea. My response came from having to deal with one too many "why are cops racist" posters, sorry about that.
Its difficult to judge when you need to shut to wound or shoot to kill. This reminds me of a montage of cops getting shot that shows just why they have to shoot so much. In the flash of an eye they can have 8 bullets in them.
They have no clue who is going to be compliant and who has already determined they ware going to kill the cop the second the lights came on.

How much of a difference will I see, in say blender render times?

Next upgrade after that would be a new graphics card, one with CUDA cores.
>>
alright /g/ what should my next project be? Making an android app or something involving neural networks?
>>

Dont know. How complicated of blender stuff are you doing?
I have a 6700k and my ram is at 3000, I made a few shapes in blender and it saves instantly.
Im sure if youre asking, you are doing real work, but Ive got nothing else to compare it too.

On my old 2008 prebuilt computer when I boot linux I could see the post messages with the green [ok], now it just skips straight to login.

When mine does that it sometimes helps when I start it again. It then opens two windows at the same time.

If that doesn't help I usually kill the process and start over. If that doesn't help I restart my PC (it's a good excuse to work less, of course, it'd be infuriating if it happened at home, but that's why I don't use FF at home).

What kinda question is that? You still need to program the backend.

Okay, question guys, I have to take a course on coursera or edx for a subject in my school.
It doesn't matter which one it is, because I don't have to present the content of it, just the syllabus, the looks, basically the teachers are going to be grading our presentation.

Anyway, which would be a good course to take, to teach me more about computer security? I don't know that much about coding, so I was thinking I'd either go with a course about C# or SQL, but I don't really know.

I don't game (if osu even counts), and just generally multitask like a ton of tabs in ff, foobar, chinese cartoons, paint.NET etc and I'm new to the PC building scene.
Basically for what I do, should I get an i3 6100 or some AMD for the better multithreaded performance?

If I would take HDD with Windows 7 installed from old PC and plug it into new one, would it still boot and work without problems?

Or there are extra fixing I would need to do first?

Also, should I install drivers fro new mobo and GPU before moving the HDD or after?
>>
>>56978430
There's a god chance it would. Last time my OS wouldn't start after moving was when I was still using XP, and even that only happened once. If it starts you can install the drivers later.

Quick question guys

Can you check the resolution of Windows 7 boot manager screen ( resolution of pic related screen).

Steps to check:
1) Open windows boot manager screen by tapping F8 during startup
2) Press monitor key and find resolution
3) Tell me

Step 1 is only for those who don't dualboot.
Windows XP/8/10 users need not apply, only Win 7.

it's 1024x768, same as setup and the boot splash (by default)
>>

>>56981389
also note that this has remained unchanged up to 10, and even vista setup is 1024x768, i believe vista also uses the same for the bootloader, but i forget. it's boot splash is however based on the one from XP/2003, and is still 640x480
