I'm trying to install 500 fonts but the only way i know how to do it, is by double clicking it, the n pressing install - yet that takes ages, i s there an easier way?
>>
>>56930031
"installing fonts" is just moving the font file to the fonts directory
/usr/share/fonts for global and ~/.local/share/fonts for user
>>
>>56930031
The solution: mv
mv (move) your fonts into a directory which X knows, run fc-cache and you're done.
for example (to let X know that your fonts are at ~/.fonts):
xset +fp ~/.fonts && xset fp rehash

That said, 500 fonts may slow down your programs, try a cleanup.

I just got the following in syslog when activating my vpn.

Is this a mitm? Not a crazy suggestion, I'm in China and vpns need to go through the great firewall.

I'm running pptp because it's faster and I'm not doing anything secret, I just need unblocked google.

A small extract, it went on for several pages but I killed the VPN to stop it.. Looks like I'm being probed to find out details about my VPN?

The VPS is under my sole control, it shouldn't be doing anything malicious.

I tried installing it a while ago while distrohopping. The installer didn't seem to have LUKS as an option. It seems okay just like any other KDE distro, and apparently Tumbleweed is a decent rolling release.

Actually, I used it for about a year in 2006, back when it was KDE 3. My dad installed it for me on my shitty Compaq, and it was way prettier looking than windows 2000 or XP at the time. He made me a FOSS fanatic from a very young age. I even believed GIMP was better than Photoshop for a while.

Now I'm using Manjaro KDE on desktop, and Fedora GNOME3 on laptop.

it definitely isn't, but I still use it for my shitposting OC.

actually, does anyone know how to give GIMP the PS workflow? In PS, you can easily transition between using a tool, moving a selection around, sampling a color, etc. due to the keybinds. And similar tools are all grouped under one icon. I'd like GIMP a lot more if it was possible to do this.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm trying to troubleshoot the audio on my Ubuntu installation, but don't know where to start.

I can only start music (using either Spotify or mpd) if there's already an active audio output (for instance if I play a video with audio in VLC). When the music is finally playing, I can quit whatever application "initiated" the audio output.

How do I begin troubleshooting this? How do I pinpoint what part of the audio stack causes the lack of sound? AFAIK Spotify does NOT depend on Pulseaudio, hence the audio flow looks something like this:
Spotify -> ALSA -> Pulseaudio virtual device -> ALSA -> speaker

How can I check that each component receives the input?

>suse is one of the most popular distros
[citation needed]

Distrowatch's statistics come from clicks on their site (assuming that's where you got the idea that SUSE is popular). In order for a distro to have usage statistics, they have to record it for themselves.

Imo, no one talks about the SUSE because it
- has its roots in Germany (whereas everything else is America-centric)
- its newer than Slackware, Debian, Fedora, Arch, and Gentoo
- it has no interesting qualities compared to those 5 distros
- the logo is kinda dumb, but admittedly this is 100% subjective and just my opinion

I like zypper and I like their KDE setup + YaST, but not enough to endure having less packages (and less support for problems) available compared to Debian. In conclusion, OpenSUSE is perfectly fine and even polished, but ultimately it doesn't have much of a leg up on its competition. It's boring.

I think it needs its own outright dark version.

Setting it to global dark theme isn't consistent across all windows. Some programs still use the light theme. It's nice, I prefer zukitre to zukitwo but I think on the whole vertex is a little better.

I use arc-flatabulous dark simply because the colour palette is pretty nice and it's consistent across all windows. I also unironically like the apple traffic light window buttons. I would like a non-flat theme though but options are limited.

for simple notes you can use nano (easier) or vim (harder) which run inside your terminal, all you need to do is type nano file or vim file.

if you want to write a note down really quickly use gedit, I have it on my dock just to write something down that I don't plan to save

I like to use zim for larger notes and collections of notes, it acts like wikipedia in that you can link different notes together with hyperlinks

I think gnote also has wiki-like functions but I prefer zim as it all works under one window

And if you're writing code then of course vim/atom/whatever you want.
>>
>>56937705

>Setting it to global dark theme isn't consistent across all windows. Some programs still use the light theme
Not "some", it's GTK2 programs, because GTK2 doesn't have a light/dark variant contained within the theme.

Just go to GNOME Look or searh for "gtk3" on DeviantArt to find new themes.
>>
>>56937799

I've put Debian (stable) on normies' machines before. Pick a familiar-looking DE (I use Xfce), show them the applications menu, their home directory, and how to start a web browser.

you can either update it yourself, put an entry in cron to do it, or just teach them "once a week or so, run this command and hit Y for anything it asks you".

As I mentioned, internet says that debian (or LMDE) are not the simplest OS. My experience says Debian and LMDE are equally simply than ubuntu or linux mint.

There's no other "easy" distro out-there?
>>
>>56937867
This, but instead of showing them a specific command, make a script they can just double-click.

Debian is just fine for computer idiots, but Ubuntu does hold some advantages - mainly the Ubuntu Software Center and the wealth of ubuntu-specific tutorials and guides (i.e. when you go to Spotify's website and choose Linux, it'll show you commands that only work in ubuntu).
>>
>>56937906
"simple" means different things to different people. To a normie that just needs a browser and an office suite, and isn't mucking around with the system, pretty much any Linux is going to be very simple, once it's installed for them.

if you want something with a reputation of being easy, pick Ubuntu over Mint, due to the latter's atrocious security record.
>>
>>56937906

You're an idiot.
What is "easy"? You're saying OS, but you're thinking of desktop environments. Get Ubuntu, install something "hard" on it via the minimal installer like a custom desktop environment with a tiling window manager. There, your assumption of an easy OS is destroyed.

You've already been told that it's the desktop environment which makes it "easy", not the underlying operating system.

I asked for actual numbers to compare it, but you're still offering awful anecdotal evidence and blindly trusting it as the truth.

Hi friends,

I am a windows babby that wants a dual boot of Linux. I want a distro that will be easy for my but won't have a botnet. I also want as much customizability as possible, to make my computer look like some kind of minimalist cyberpunk machine.

Any recommendations? I've heard good thunks about xubuntu
>>
>>56938111

Every distribution can be ran alongside another OS.
I don't know any distributions which make you part of a botnet.
Every distribution is equally customizable.

Conclusion: according to your requests — any distribution. You're welcome.
>>
>>56938086
Obviously not since gnome, kde and xfce are not just WMs but it makes no sense to discuss this with you since you are just being a toxic faggot instead of offering an idea on how to measure it other than a real world scenario.
>>
>>56937906
Hardened Gentoo install. Lock it down tight and give them a simple GUI updater for what limited software they want. It'll run fast, won't get pwned, and will keep their web shit and normie docs up to date without bothering you.
>>
>>56938168

>Obviously not since gnome, kde and xfce are not just WMs
And that's relevant how? We're talking about window managers and all of those things you mentioned have window managers.

>you are just being a toxic faggot instead of offering an idea on how to measure it other than a real world scenario.
I'm not offering it, because there's no need. One can assume that the difference would be negligible assuming everything else is exactly the same. Therefore your whole "using a certain window manager gave me significantly better battery life" claim is misleading and wrong.
>>
>>56937907
>Ubuntu Software Center
Hasn't been stable or worked that well since 12.04, maybe earlier. IMHO Ubuntu lost all the right to call itself a newbie distro a long time ago. They're big a popular with a heap of resources but "just works," is out. "Just crashes," would be more accurate. On a "LTS" release, I think that's hilariously unacceptable. If you're going to put up with that you may as well use Arch or Gentoo and get some actual performance and current packages for your trouble.

Why are the proprietary nvidia drivers so shit?
Every time I update them, most programs that rely on X and OGL context will fail to start. Programs that have been already running will start glitching (for example Firefox tool tip frames will display squares instead of font glyph). What's even more bizarre, suddenly I won't need to hold CTRL to switch the tty, so I cannot use, say, ALT+F4 to close a window because the system will think that I'm in fact pressing CTRL+ALT+F4 effectively switching to another tty.

This essentially forces me to reboot the system, why can't the drivers work as-is after an update and just get replaced on reboot on something if they break the system?

I'm pretty sure that's a GUI program, so you need to make sure it gets the DISPLAY environment variable to start. It's explained on the internet and on the Arch Wiki.

I don't even think you need to start it manually, because it will be activated by dbus automatically.

So I'm having trouble with gparted. I recently cleared out ~500gb out of my windows partition and I want to use it as my home partition. Thing is, I looked it up and apparently I have to move the partition up.

The only way I can do that is through gparted live usb. So I booted it up through the gparted live usb and everything works except the graphical interface. All I get is the command line when I go through all the steps and running gparted gives me an error for missing display or something like that.

So I've been out of the personal desktop GNU/Linux game for a while now (primary usage comes from work and class) and I haven't really kept up with the developments of the more popular distros as much as I could have.

So I'm about to re-image my computer with a Linux distro and I don't know which one I'm going to want so my question(s) is which is(are) the current best distro(s) to use?

I'm familiar with apt based systems, yum based systems, and arch based systems so I'm pretty open.

I'd prefer something mid-weight, not bloated to fuck and not skimpy no-bones either.

Oh and one more thing, I need a guide on hardening my install and stuff. Basically more advanced security configurations I should take. Does one exist that I can refer to?

Thanks.

Ok, that's one possibility.

I have to say that I really, really loved Arch pre-systemd adoption, but now with most mainstream distros adopting systemd, I find it hard to enjoy most distros.

A few questions... I'm just now getting into Linux. This is not homework related.

The Unix Operating system has been around for a few years?

Can you tell us when Unix was made available for the first time?
Who created this Operating System?

Linux followed much later and has picked a large following.

Can you tell us when Linux was made available for the first time?
Who created this Operating System?

In this course we are using one distribution (Fedora) of Linux. There many more out there.

Search the web for information on other Linux distributions and compare its features with the Linux distro we are using in the course.
Include the URL for your source in this post (3 points out of 5 for first post).
How do you think the two Linux distros compare? You may want to view information about each distro on their web site and tell us what you think.

Do you have the non-free repos in use? You may need non-free drivers. Check to see if "nonfree contrib" is in the file "/etc/apt/sources.list". If it isn't, append it to every line with a url, and then run "apt update"

Install xserver-xorg-video-all to install all display drivers. Collectively they don't take up much room at all.

I'm pretty new to Linux in general.
It says something along the lines of non-free firmware of software or something. Shall I just install that video-all package?

Shut the fuck up! Jackasses like you are why Linux is barely over 2%! You encounter somebody new to it who understandably asks a newbie question and you leap on them, insult them, tell them to use proprietary cuckware?

How literally fucking autistic are you? You can't handle people not immediately being experts so you take out your sexual frustrations on them and drive them back to Windows?

You are human cancer. Get fucked.

You must be doing something wrong in the process, log into root to install sudo then edit the sudoers file in /etc/ then you're free to sudo until the end of the world.

It would also be helpful if you would tell us which distro you tried to install.

Just installed Void Linux, while looking for systemd-free distros,
I downloaded the Mate x86_64 iso Live cd, put it on my usb stick, booted, installed.

Everything was going on perfectly...

I did a xbps-install -Su

I rebooted the pc.

And then it happened,
Remember the Arch broking xorg meme?

Yeah.
No video output on my monitor..

I will probably wipe it and try Devuan tomorrow or something.

I mean, I could do a chroot and try to fix it, but I honestly don't care about this distro anymore

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. One of the most famous and influential introductions to program out there.

The snake is not normally associated with it. It might be some kind of meme. I found a hentai manga (Itsumono Asobi) that somebody had edited to include snippets of the book, and had the snake in it (perhaps to censor the penis? I'll admit I didn't read in detail).

/fglt/,

I'm trying to install mpd and I've noticed that some guides say that I should use:

 sudo service mpd start

and some guides say I should use:

systemctl start mpd

which do I use when?
>>
>>56946200
systemctl is systemd. I think service is aliased on systemd systems, but I am not sure.
>>
>>56942751
Look up The touch screen device, see if it's digitizer is Linux compatible. If it's a "large" Chinese brand it should have a driver already in the kernel. But be careful anon.
>>
>>56946200
When you install mpd, it's demon will run as root. This is basically a good thing if you run a server, but for a single user system, you don't want this, since it leads to "/g/, why doesn't mpd werk?". So, it's your turn to decide if you want to use mpd as root and configure it in /etc/ or if you want to teach mpd how to behave correctly, remove the system service and run it as user.
>>
>>56946524
Or you could just
systemctl --user start mpd

Guys, how can we tell GNOME to add some fucking thumbnails in their GTK filepicker? How about collectivly asking in their IRC that this shit is fucking important!!!

12 years since the first bug report and still nobody cared and newcomers get told to run a patch and compile from source (like any newcomer even knows how to patch a file).

Horrible!

I'm thinking about trying a non-Ubuntu-based distro on my laptop. I've whittled down my choices to the following:
>Debian
>Manjaro
>CentOS

I've previously used different flavours of Ubuntu, and my desktop is running Linux Mint, so I figure Debian wouldn't be too hard to get used to. But I'm also thinking of trying something completely different like Manjaro or CentOS.

What do?

Why is it such a pain in the dick for me to set the mouse sensitivity (and not acceleration) on debian? I'm using an xinput line in my .xsession.rc and that works until I hit the kvm switch, and the mouse resets the transformation matrix when it's plugged back in.
Now I'm trying to run it with udevd, but that doesn't have access to the monitor. What do

Why does /g/ say serious developers use Linux?
I've been using lubuntu for a half year (which I really enjoy), and all I do is compile programs in terminal.
What kind of projects/things should I be doing to fully take advantage of Linux?

I skipped setting up encryption during the install because it was taking forever.

Is it still possible to do a full disk encryption without re-imaging my entire machine again? I've heard dm-crypt+LUKS being praised often, but it seems I can't do it without unmounting partitions and basically overwriting it with the encryption.

Is there any way past this? Can I used Veracrypt instead?
>>
>>56946796
Mount it?
>>
>>56946915
If you want system-wide encryption, you're going to have to start-over.
Otherwise you can still encrypt files or new partitions.
>>
>>56946851
>What kind of projects/things should I be doing to fully take advantage of Linux?
Learn 2 reverse engineering, what the communty really needs is free drivers, everything else was already coded at least twice.
>>
>>56946915
No, you can't encrypt he whole disk while not touching the data already on it.
>>
>>56946927
>>56946934
Fucken damnit. Is it even worth doing all over?

I already configured a lot of my system to my liking.
>>
>>56946944

>>
>>56946944
>I already configured a lot of my system to my liking.
Just copy the config files over.

isn't it sad that linux developers basically just drop binary code in order to support more hardware (also known as muh market share) on costs of freedom?
>>
>>56946954
Well why not? Does it hurt to be extra secure?

>>56946959
I suppose I used the wrong word there, I haven't gotten to editing the config files yet, I mean stuff like extra packages and their settings and such.
>>
>>56946970
>I mean stuff like extra packages and their settings and such
You should be able to get your package manager to spit out a list of installed packages, which you can feed back into it, so that you install all of the same packages again.
>>
>>56946987
Well some of them were compiled from source, which is why I'm very hesitant in redoing the whole thing, such a pain in the ass. I thought that at first I would be able to encrypt my disk post-install, but apparently not. Not sure why I thought that though, should have known better.
>>
>>56946965
>isn't it sad
It would be sad if Linux was developed in order to have freedom, but IRL it's just a hobby project by some student, which isn't bad at all, but when you expect freedom here, you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>56946965
If you want a free kernel, check out GNU Linux-libre, but make sure your hardware doesn't need botnet drivers.
>>
>>56947042
>just a hobby project by some student,
>>
>>56947116

It's pretty clear that 4chan is going to die, and that 8 channel sucks. What's the best way to learn to make a replacement site primarily using Go? This is a good start, but I don't like the UI. https://github.com/nkeronkow/tolxanka

I'll be doing this on Ubuntu 16.

I have a strange problem. Internet on my machine suddenly stopped working.
I tried to do the networking service restart but it had no effect.
I could fix this by rebooting the computer, but i need to find out what caused it because it is a server and i need to prevent this from happening again.
It's ubuntu server 16.04
Any ideas?

I've used CLI Linux (mostly Debian and similar) at work a decent amount so I'm familiar with the basics. Now I'd like to try out Linux as primary OS on desktop.

I installed Debian with KDE but the UI feels kinda clunky. I guess I should start customizing it but I have no idea where to start. I couldn't even figure out how to install themes properly.

I checked the links in the OP but it didn't really help. I swear I'm not retarded just a bit confused.

menuentry 'Windows 7' {

insmod ntfs
search --fs-uuid --set 0EF417D4F417BCC1

change the UUID to suit, if you don't know what it is, run for example;
