Question about data storaging, no hardware expert myself.
What's the best way to store and backup several TB of data and maintain it? I have my data and backup currently sluggishly spread over several HDD's.
Now that these are growing old I'm becoming paranoid of data loss. I'm thinking about getting several identical HDD's and always have a second copy of my backup or my media storage handy.

Budget is kind of low, but I'm a bit concerned about too old HDD's as I heard that they lose integrity even when not actively used, means limited shelf life. Also older HDD's often had more construction fault's, or so I heard at least.
What's the oldest listing date I should buy, on amazon the ones with good prices are usually 3-5 years old and there's usually no way to see manufacture date I'm aware of.

Also tips on on synching my backups? My architecture for example: intern storage medium>backup of intern storage medium. Media storage>backup of media storage.

Did a recent Windows Update for W7 make it so upon being installed you give Windows permission to CHECK and INSTALL EVERY UPDATE IT WANTS TO without your explicit consent beforehand? Because for two years I was selectively avoiding the telemetshit updates, but I updated Windows about a week ago after forgetting to for a month or two, and this morning I woke to find that my computer restarted in my sleep to update Windows, and checking for updates was set to auto somehow.

How do I redownload and reinstall Windows?
There's multiple ways of doing it IIRC since it's such a mess, but what method should I use if the laptop I got came with Windows 10 and I need to wipe even the drivers rather than just use some inbuild system cleaning tool?

Also >>56883230

Crashplan or Backblaze.
Not kidding, that's the cheapest you can go.

If you are a tinfoil hat, use Blu-ray, or even tape drives can be an option.
But, I would just use Crashplan.

You plug in the drive, it does deduplication + compression + encrypts the files, sends it up. It's super comfy.

>>
>>56883510
Boot windows and shrink it so you have room for your linux partitions.
>>
>>56883510
Not much, your layout is absolutely fucked.

1) Open Terminal
2)
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gparted

3)
sudo gparted

There:
1) Resize that big partition, 127GB one
2) Move it to the left
3) Move the the 500mb one after that
4) Now you have space at the end of the disk
5) Use that for Xubuntu. ~20gigs should be fine.
>>
>>56883538
That could work, but not sure, Windows is picky about the layout. Then there is the partition problem.

I think anon has 4 partitions already, which is the maximum with no extended layout.
So he would need to have only 3.
4th would be an extended, then 5-6 for Xubuntu.

Thanks for the Power Options tip, but the other thing seems to just be a request to automatically check for solutions to problems, which is still on the default "Each time a problem occurs, ask me before checking for solutions".

I was just wondering why Windows suddenly had permission to update without my permission. Literally as soon as I got my HDD I disabled automatic Windows updates, and they remained disabled even when I updated Windows a week ago. But this morning I woke to find they were enabled, and my laptop restarted in the night to automatically update so I had some updates to remove n shit...

>>
>>56883893
LTE eats more battery.
LTE got much weaker and worse coverage.

So if you want it because of the memes, don't.
Sony did it properly, they have a 4G switch in the quick settings. If I need to hurry the fuck up, I turn it on. Then I turn it off.

My Note 4 and Sony both have like 1-2-3 bars of LTE at every segment of my country. WCDMA (3G)? 4-5 bars almost always.

Not this guy but I have a similar inquiry

Why is there virtually no difference in price between 1TB and 500GB HDDs??? It is like the absolute minimum you should spend for an HDD nowadays is the 1TB HDD price since otherwise you pay pretty much if not literally the same thing, but get half as much? Why?
>>
>>56883897
>>56883978

It's just not much cheaper to make smaller drives. You still need similar platters/container/wiring.
>>
>>56884013
Oh, that's really fuckin weird desu. Sucks real bad that if you just can't afford the best price/ performance ratio, you're fucked? Like if you need 10 dollars but also need an HDD, you get half as much when you're already paying 60. Sad..

500gb drives are probably just extra inventory, there are people willing to pay a premium to exactly replace what they have.

However its likely that those are also single 500GB platters which make them somewhat more reliable than a 2 platter 1tb drive.

You can also buy refurbished drives if you want a bargain. I bought 4 samsung 1TB refurbished drives 7-8 years ago, and they all still spinning

I could've sworn /old/ used to say 403 forbidden instead of the standard 404 not found

/test/ is the mod board IIRC

But everything above is gone now except /test/ which requires a log in. I believe the Scruffy the janitor screencap leaks from like 2014 were from /test/.
>>
>>56884148
>Can you point my dumb ass in the right direction for figuring out more about what I can do if i wanna go down that route?

Well, for the drive:
- Pick the one with most warranty. WD Black has 3 years or so. WD Red may also have that much. But I found 5 year warranty ones too. HDD drives tend to fail after warranty is over (with normal use, so external drives will last longer I guess).
One of my WD Blacks started having bad sectors just a few weeks, it was 7 years old (1tb).
My Scorpio Black from my T500 still works, and the other 1Tb WD black still works in the same PC.

- I would just use one of these:
https://www.sharkoon.com/category/storage-solutions/docking-stations.aspx
Whatever they sell. I think they sell "SATA QuickPort XT HC" in my country, but as long as it's USB3.0 and has external power adapter, it will be fine.
Again, check shops for warranty. But I guess it will be just 1 year.

Other docks will do fine too, I have a metal housed Chieftec one, it still works.
But honestly, this pop-in, pop-out way is just much comfier.

Do SSDs take longer to read files? Or did something new happen in a Windows 10 update that messed with it?

Whenever I double click an image (Windows 10 Anniversary), it opens up in Windows Photo Viewer but there is a noticeable delay from the time I double click to the time it pops up on my screen. It even has the loading cursor. I just built the pc a few months ago and it's pretty decent. Using Samsung 850 EVO SSD, GTX 1070, lots of ram. The loading cursor lasts about a second and then the image pops up immediately no matter how big the file. I'm not sure if it has happened this entire time I've had the rig, I just seemed to notice it just now. Same wait time, even for png, and then it just loads the entire full image after one second.

ONLY buy a laptop with an i3 or i5.
DO NOT BUY the "U" CPU fitted ones.
They are piss fucking weak.

And a cheapo laptop is like 600 bucks.
Throw in 100-200 more, then you can buy an ASUS ROG laptop with a GTX950m or so.
Which is perfect for light gaming.

Just an idea.
A friend of mine bought an ACER Nitro recently, he also wanted something very cheap.

> inb4 you don't need power
An U is so weak, even Youtube takes a while to load. Even Facebook lags to scroll.
Look up scores and shit. Also "Notebookcheck" is invaluable.

PC is randomly freezing till I force reboot. Then, sometimes it will turn on, nothing appears on the monitor, then it turns itself off about 10 seconds later. I got a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error when I tried to boot into windows. Gnu/linux worked for a little bit before freezing. The first time it happened my screen went black but the pc stayed on.

I have memtest downloaded and will try swapping out the sticks, as searching that error lead me to believe it was something to do with ram, any other advice?

That your install is fine.
If you check your HDD and that's also fine, your installation is just fucked you need to full reinstall it.
Windows can also "upgrade" or "refresh" it, it will work but it will not be perfect.

>>56885244
> console
Costs less, indeed.
Then the games cost more. They are usually 10-20 sometimes even 40$ more.
Then you have to pay for the online membership.
And last but not least, you need a display for it.

If your friends play console though, you should buy a console.

Sounds like power supply problem.
But memtest is first. IF nothing pops up in memtest for hours, your ram is fine. It is a PSU issue.
Buy a new PSU, brand-less ones are like 20$, but they wont last for a decade. But who cares anyway.

On any "ACPI" computer (past-2000-ish?) it will do a clean shutdown.
Of course it can fail if you have "Notepad" open with unsaved files, for example.
You know when it asks you "do you want to save it?"

So just run only the game, tab out, test power button.

>>56885370
Depends on the game.
Most f2p games are VERY CPU bound.
And the ones that are not, are usually not so GPU heavy.

I say they are a good match.
If you want like Blade&Soul? That shit will lag on a 4770K too.
Want Witcher 3? You need a 1080TI to have 60FPS on 1080p.

Overwatch, BF4 and the rest just werks fine.

So I'm trying to move the entire installation of an amazon AWS instance to another AWS instance. I'd basically do the following but the local and remote sync folders would be the root folder, right?
rsync -avz /path/to/local/sync/folder -e "ssh -i /path/to/ssh/key" ubuntu@ec2instance:/path/to/remote/sync/folder

Would it work if I just moved the root folder? Would there be booting issues on the new instance?

Copying the contents of the drive itself sometimes works, but the license not so much. You could call the activation hotline and try to claim you're replacing your mobo, but it's not hard to just buy a cheap license off kinguin. Or pirate.

Warm sound. Meaning that it's not a completely accurate and neutral rendering of the original audio. Emphasizes high and particularly low end. But it's not nearly as bad as beats. I like it, some people don't. If you prefer a little power over absolute clarity they're nice.

ACCESS MODIFIERS FOR JAVA

Java allows you to make properties of a class private, but when you're inheriting that class, the property needs to be made protected so that the subclass is able to access it. However, making it protected also makes the property available to everything within the same package. How do I make properties available just with the class inheritance hierarchy and nowhere else?

>>
>>56890467
Protected makes it so it's only accessible to itself and child classes.
No access modifier is the "package" modifier.

e.g.:
int dildo is available to only Dildos and classes that extend Dildos.

package penis;

public class Dildos {
protected int dildo = 5;
}

int dildo is available to all classes in the 'penis' package.

package penis;

public class Dildos {
int dildo = 5;
}

>>
>>56890683
No access modifier makes it available to anything within the package. Putting protected makes it available to everything inside the package but also means that subclasses from outside of that package are able to access the property as well.

Don't know Scheme really (touched on it super briefly in university but not enough that I'd remember much of use), but I think that's close to what I was thinking. Kind of like

while (x < array1.length && y < array2.length) {
if (array1[x] > array2[y]) {
y++;
}
else if (array1[x] < array2[y] {
x++;
}
else {
x++;
y++;
n++;
}
}

With x, y, and n being initialized to 0 before the loop and n holding the number of duplicates at the end of the loop.
>>
>>56891840
Though note that as I said, this is worthless if both arrays aren't already sorted using the same sorting type.

Should I bother with a disc drive at all?

I know Windows 10 ships on USB sticks if you (((buy))) it. How easy is Windows 10 to pirate? If I'm doing this I want DirectX12 and all that as well. If I take my Windows 10 product key from the current machine and use it on my new build won't that technically be legit anyway? Alright, here's the rub. I'm trying to transfer files (MTP) to my Samsung Galaxy S6 from my PC (windows). I've transferred files a million times before (mp4, mp3, gifs, jpgs, pdfs, et cetera).

The computer doesn't recognise my device.

I'm using the USB chord that came with my device, the phone is charging, and I've indicated "Use USB for" file transfers.

Is it a driver issue?

I've had this phone for 4 months, and I've never, ever had a problem doing this before with my PC and my phone.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1789530/what-are-the-specific-differences-between-msi-and-setup-exe-file

"An MSI is a Windows Installer database. Windows Installer (a service installed with Windows) uses this to install software on your system (i.e. copy files, set registry values, etc...).

A setup.exe may either be a bootstrapper or a non-msi installer. A non-msi installer will extract the installation resources from itself and manage their installation directly. A bootstrapper will contain an MSI instead of individual files. In this case, the setup.exe will call Windows Installer to install the MSI.

Some reasons you might want to use a setup.exe:

Windows Installer only allows one MSI to be installing at a time. This means that it is difficult to have an MSI install other MSIs (e.g. dependencies like the .NET framework or C++ runtime). Since a setup.exe is not an MSI, it can be used to install several MSIs in sequence.
You might want more precise control over how the installation is managed. An MSI has very specific rules about how it manages the installations, including installing, upgrading, and uninstalling. A setup.exe gives complete control over the software configuration process. This should only be done if you really need the extra control since it is a lot of work, and it can be tricky to get it right. "
>>
>>56892391
>Redpill

Really? An msi is an installer packaged in such a way that windows can unpack and install it automatically using it's own installer program. An exe is it's own program, and can play by it's own rules. It generally takes more work to make an exe, but options for what it can do are more flexible.

Most people get by fine without dvd drives these days, especially if you never buy physical copies of games. You can download windows easily

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/

https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Pirating isn't hard, but microsoft could potentially crack down on the current methods some day

http://pastebin.com/smjvLZN4

If your current machine is an OEM, the license technically isn't legal to transfer, but if you link it to your microsoft account and claim you're just replacing a damaged motherboard you might be able to pass it off.
