Let me shed some light on this shit. A lot of it has to do with the stagnation of the CPU market. That is the best sandy bridge business laptop. If you're willing to sacrifice some portability you can get the equivalent of a $500 Dell for $140ish.

I just bought a Dell Inspirion 13 5000 series 2 in 1. It's thin, light, and has a 1080p display. I love the fucking thing. Here is the issue. It feels flimsy, and has a i3 6100u. The chip is totally sufficient, and literally sips power. However the i5 2520m that you find in most t420s performs almost identically.

The t420 sits in a sweet spot for value. They're build out of gameboy/nokia plastic, they are EXTREMELY serviceable and expandable, they are abundant and thus cheap, and perform almost identically to the modern entry level chip the i3 6100u.

It's the pinnacle of value for your money.

I don't. Not the T420, anyway. W520 is more my style.

I got a T520 around 3 months ago, I like it alot.
Bought it for under $300 and it does what I want it to do just fine. The only games I play on it are CRPGS like Fallout or Baldur's gate.

Glad I bought it, and I actually thought about buying a mac book.

*Reverting back to Win7, Win10 runs very sluggish on this laptop*

I like how durable it is, and the hardware support is fantastic for FOSS software. The thing they did recently with Linux was a total dick move from Lenovo though, but still, their thinkpads are GOAT laptops.
>>
>>56744063
I can take the RAM off and replace it with 16GB like on a desktop computer.

It's durable.

If I'm done with it or if I wish to get another ThinkPad after the upgrades I wish to do (IPS screen, more RAM, 1TB SSD) I can sell it for 200$ + the bare price of its upgrades to someone who'd be grateful of me for doing all of the purchase + replacement work instead of the mum of a whiny 14-years-old teen who'll try to buy my previous-gen ROG for 1500$ instead of the stock 2500$ price for her son to play to League of Legend.

I love my laptop
It's amazing, it doesn't weigh a ton at all, extremely portable, upgradable... the fact that I got one brand new a week ago still makes me want to shed a tear of joy a bit

The fact that I can slap a mSata SSD in there and if I really wanted to I could get an HDD for storage (which I don't really need since I just connect back home to my media servers), the fact that I can flash coreboot and upgrade the wireless card I have in it, the fact that it can take 16GB of RAM like a damn champ, and it's already faster than most of the laptops my colleagues have that have been made in the past 2 years for a third of the price

I don't know OP, I'm glad I fell for the meme

guys I feel awesome right now, I just have to share it

A few minutes ago I connected a printer I have never used before to my T430 with Ubuntu 16.04, and it was already available to be used

so fucking amazing, and then the built-in scan documents program automatically made my files into a PDF, rather than image files

It just feels so weird, because I remember how frustrating things were when I was still a winfag so long ago
Thinkpad + Linux is literally fucking perfect, I don't even use my desktop I spent over $600 dollars on that has an SSD that much anymore, as the thinkpad with SSD route is just as good and you can't beat the portability of it

The thinkpad is, no joke, one of the best decisions I made. I don't care how autistic it sounds. I'm sure you've heard normies complain of slow internet browsing, their tech "not working", etc.
I have such a reliable machine, that I don't even have to put up with inconveniences any longer, and I can also service it myself

10/10 would again

I understand its hard to give up gaming, but don't be a little faggot

Besides, you can still run the games that aren't total timesinks and are still fun from the early 2000s, and 90s via wine

So far on my thinkpad I have Bejeweled 3 and Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13. what do i like about them? - they don't suck me in, I can just save and quit whenever I so wish.

I never want to go back to being addicted to the online trap

is the thinkpad 13 decent enough? It's the cheapest model and its pretty light
>>
>>56746549
I hope you're just trolling, but if you're not its okay to be ignorant, nobody learns things instantly

Lenovo has bastardized the Thinkpad brand, by making offshoots that have less features and durability. Some examples are the Thinkpad Edge series, Thinkpad L, thinkpad helix, etc

If I had to recommend a thinkpad, go for the most common ones, they won't fail you.
>T430, T420 / T530, T520, X220 or X230, X201, W530/W520, or anything before these models

Do not buy a T440, X240, or anything after these generations. This was the final blow to the thinkpad, where they started soldering parts down, removing buttons and keys, and they even removed the trackpad buttons
>>

A cheap T420 with the usual 2520m works just as well as the modern equivalent for current tasks.

Replace the stock hdd with one of those dirt cheap $30 ssds and you have a machine that still works fine for cheap.

Four main reasons: Design, durability, comfort and price.

I have a T60 (in bits, rip in peas) a T61 (pictured) and a T420s (pictured). These are pre-ruined era, maybe these two could be considered the very best there were. They both have a keyboard that cannot be bettered in any laptop. It's a joy to use, I'd even go far enough to say I sometimes prefer it over my mechanical. It just has that feel. And it describes the rest of the machine as well.

I like the design, it's square, there's no soft edges, round anything, shitty hard plastics or poor venting. The finish is matte, it doesn't scratch easily, it's resistant to wear and tear. The machine itself is well secured, it won't break even if I manhandle it. The screen has a high resolution for an old machine, unless you buy the absolute cheapest model. It's very useable even though the colors aren't good. Like I said the keyboard is a joy, the touchbad and ultranav are better than you get in any laptop apart from some apple products. These computers aren't designed for looks, the placement of everything is well thought of and it's intuitive to use.

It's a great machine to upgrade (T420 and older), everything is marked out and hold together with screws. It's easy to access the vital parts. You don't have to be afraid of breaking it, you won't unless you want to. You can fit an extra battery in the ultrabay if you take the optical drive out.

Support is great too, I'd say better than for any other computer. Parts are always available. Cheap. Batteries can be bought from aliexpress for peanuts. No matter what OS you run, you are guaranteed no compatibility issues. Everything is just there, there's information about everything. If it's down to something, it's down to the user to follow instructions that are always available. Nothing is a problem ever with these things.

Then there's the price. It's chump change. It has all the power you might ever need.

I don't know.

I have to be honest. And I have to say honestly believe the T430 and on keyboard is much much nicer to type on. By a lot. I put a T420 keyboard in my T430 and while I liked having the missing keys back I found I missed keys when typing a hell of a lot more, and it feels mushier.

It's the layout that keeps it down.

But, if it was the new keys in the classic layout, it would kick the T60 and T420 keyboards' collective asses
